- The Little Tramp and his dog companion struggle to survive in the inner city.

When Charlie is rejected after attempting to imitate the slicker, the result is ambiguous--either tragic or a happy ending. Critics have long argued as to whether the final scene is real or a dream.

Coming into possession of an instrument that restores his hearing, he learns that the persons he has idolized are not to be trusted and that his wife is unfaithful; in despair, he destroys the instrument. Episode 3: Hop. As a boy in China, Chin Gow learns that girl infants are undesirable. When a man, he becomes proprietor of several San Francisco opium dens and weds Toy Sing, who bears him a baby girl. Chin Gow beats his wife and vows to slay the child. His wife's friend brings in a crucifix sent by the priest, and as he nails it to the wall, the spike penetrates the skull of Chin Gow lying in a bunk on the other side of the wall and kills him. Episode 4: The Intrigue. On a yachting tour of the world, Reginald Vandebrook, reaching a foreign country, falls in love with a girl he has never seen before; he hears her called Princess and follows her into a building. There he is surrounded by East Indians who are about to murder him. He awakens to find himself in a dentist's chair having a tooth extracted.

- Poor Bessie MacGregor is struck by the automobile of wealthy Mrs. Templeton Orrin and is taken home to live with her. But Bessie leaves when Mrs. Orrin's brother, J. Warburton Ashe, trifles with her love. Thief Tony Pantelli befriends her in the tenement where she finds a room, tries to obtain money for her care from Ashe, and, failing, steals a goblet that Ashe has brought home from England, thinking it may be the Holy Grail. The goblet, which gives off a glow and is reputed to have healing powers, is recovered, stolen again, again recovered and stolen, and finally lost in a river. Meanwhile, Ashe exonerates Tony in night court, realizes he really loves Bessie, now cured, and is reunited with her.
- Helen Wakefield refuses the marriage proposal of Lawrence Knight, a rich lounge lizard, and advises him to improve himself by developing manly traits. He travels out west, changes his name to "Patches," and gets together some cattle rustlers. He is accused of being an outlaw and of shooting a fellow cowpuncher, falls in love with a ranch girl, leaves her, and then accidentally meets Helen Wakefield in a pasture where he is trying to rope a ferocious bull and she is drawing water. As the bull attacks Helen, Knight lassos it in time to save her; and they recognize each other. During his absence Helen has married and come to the West accompanied by her surveyor husband. Knight's old love flashes up, but having recently developed manly traits, he sets his jaw and departs for another section of the country.
- Owing to her father's irresponsible self-indulgence with other women, Letitia Tevis has to support her parents, and she works with Emmet Carr, who is in love with her. When her father is victimized by manicurist Nettie Dark, Letitia demands a return of his money. She is disillusioned by Emmet's presence in the girl's apartment, but eventually she realizes his innocence and finds happiness with him.
- Captain Leyton treats his son, Boy, harshly to eliminate every weakness, but he is so overjoyed at Boy's courageous defense of the character of his sweetheart, Minnie, that he has a heart attack. Before he dies, Leyton charges Boy with avenging his mother's desertion of his father for another man. Boy finds his mother; discovers the other man to be Leyton's first mate, Morgan; hurls Morgan overboard; and returns to marry Minnie.
- Penrod and his gang don't want to let neighborhood "goodie-goodie" Georgie Bassett into their club, but Penrod's father pressures him to allow the boy in because his parents are wealthy and prominent members of the town. Finally the boys agree to let Georgie join, but first they demand that he undergo an "initiation", and they're determined to make it one that Georgie won't soon forget.
