Despite Larry's record of broken romances and divorces, Virginia decides she will marry him. Virginia is slain that night and Blandon telephones his friend Philo Vance (William Wright) to help find the killer. Even as they talk, the killer strikes again and Philo hears Larry fall dead. Philo begins his investigation with Alexis Karnoff (Leon Belasco), Virginia's manager, and the two go to Larry's home, where Stella tells them that the motive for the killing might be Larry's will that names the six women in his life as heirs and if any die before the will is probated, the others will divide the shares. They also learn that Katherine Corbett (Phyllis Planchard), the first of Larry's wives, has been murdered. Suspicion now falls on Lorena Sims (Vivian Austin), a former wife who has been a patient at a sanitarium suffering from a nervous ailment. All of the deaths have been by poison and Lorena had access to it at the sanitarium. Philo uncovers another piece of information that leads him to break into the Blandon home just as Stella is about to give Lorena a glass of warm milk.
- Ship engineer Jim Taggert is rescued from a torpedoed tramp steamer by Joe Morgan, an American gangster that found New York too hot for him, and has become a fisherman operating from an out-of-the-way island off of the coast of South America. Morgan makes his headquarters at the Halfway House run by the parents of Maria Styx as a bar and dance resort catering to the planters and traders of the island. Taggert finds himself practically a prisoner along with a group of American girls acting as entertainers at the resort. Taggert shadows Morgan in his activities in a remote cove and finds that Morgan is supplying German U-boat commanders with torpedoes, but does not know that Morgan has rigged the torpedoes with clock devices that explode when at sea and sinks the U-boats.
- James "Jimmy" Wilson, a young man neglected by his parents, goes to work for a bunch of gangsters to impress his nightclub-singer girlfriend.
- Older Hank Armitage and younger Sam Wells lead a combined lonely existence in their relative seclusion as a lighthouse keeper and his assistant, respectively, their lighthouse built on what would otherwise be a small pile of rocks off the coast. One or the other will make the necessary trip via boat into town once a week for supplies as someone needs to be at the lighthouse at all times. Sam has been stringing along a local girl, Connie, on the eventual promise of marriage when the time is right. Connie has her own troubles without Sam, as she has attracted some unwanted attention which led to her being fired from her job at the cannery, unemployment which makes her want marriage to Sam be sooner than later in her loneliness. When Connie, upon meeting Hank, learns that Sam may not be the forthright guy she knew and loved, with Hank having no reason to lie in only telling what he believed to be benign truths and not knowing about Sam and Connie being in a relationship, Connie, solely in an act of spite, decides instead to marry Hank who has fallen in love with her, she to move out to the lighthouse. Those confined quarters with newlyweds Hank and Connie, and spurned Sam who believes Connie still truly loves him and will never love Hank, lead to an environment of tension, the only one not knowing what is going on being Hank. What happens in this triangle is affected by what each wants with respect to the other two, and as time goes on what each thinks the other two want.

Granny Sutton tricks him into an engagement with a beautiful young nitwit, Gwenny Miller, of whom she is very fond. Barbara Cartwright, daughter of the town's richest man, suggests she has an idea to get him out of his difficulty and Richard, suffering from an overdose of sleeping pills, visits her. He is too sleepy to realize that her plans calls for marrying her instead, and when her father catches them in an embrace, Richard finds himself engaged to a third woman. Linda walks out and Richard goes on a drinking spree and wakes up in the apartment of playboy Chester Wannamaker, who had lent him his keys before leaving town. Chester's chorus girl fiancée, Lorraine O'Reilly, arrives and proceeds to make herself at home. Gwenny and Barbara also show up as does Lorraine's gangster brother Spike O'Reilly who insists, at the point of a gun, that Richard "do right" by his sister. And then it gets confusing.
- Wishing to dispose of his wife, psychiatrist Doctor Elliott makes his patient Nina think that she suffers from a compulsion to kill. He drugs Nina, murders his wife and leaves evidence that points to Nina. The latter, pre-conditioned by Elliott, also thinks she is guilty.

Reporting the affair to British Consul Herbert Forbes, the latter tries to discourage him from further investigation, as the British are aware of the plot and are planning on staging a coup. He goes with Mike to Nancy's apartment, and she denies having ever seen him before. Sheik Ibrahim, next in command of the Arab tribe to Sheik David, is plotting with Nazi agent Yussof Streyer to kill David who is friendly with the British. Mike and Nancy have gone to David's camp, escape from Ibrahim's henchmen, and get back to El Moktar before the Arabs attack the garrison.

They get away but Jan disappears. Disguised with a black wig and new makeup, Jan becomes Dolores and gets a job singing at a cafe. Spotting Jan without her disguise, Mike follows her down an alley where they are trapped by Raynor, another espionage agent. They get away and Jan also gets away from Mike. Later, both Mike and Jan are captured and the agents realize that Mike is not the brother they are after. Paul is brought to the hideout, but Mike gets the drop on them.

- The demented archaeologist Dr. Andrew Forbes discovers a living, breathing serpent-creature known to the Aztecs as Quetzalcoatl, the Killer Bird God. Tragically, he causes his wife's death by giving her one of the beast's feathers, causing the creature to track her down and slaughter her. Now, Dr. Forbes uses this twisted knowledge to exact revenge upon his enemies by placing one of the serpent's feathers on each of his intended victims and letting the beast loose to wreak havoc.
