Meanwhile, unbeknown to Shaw, the military have intercepted the same intelligent signal through a covert military operation headed by the highly decorated Colonel Garrett. The discovery that the deep space signal intensifies human ESP powers prompts Garrett to head to the observatory with his top ESP candidate, Lieutenant Vasquez, and a squadron of soldiers in tow. Both Shaw's and Garrett's crew arrive on the verge of a violent storm only to find the observatory destroyed and both resident technicians mysteriously missing. Cut off from the rest of the world, the group continues to monitor the signal. With each new transmission, it becomes increasingly clear that the signal has a dark and ominous source that brings out the worst in all those who hear it. Before long, a trail of envy, lust, greed, and anger explodes into a sinister world of murder and betrayal. Will the struggle to harness the signal's power destroy them all? There is only one way out, but even if they can see it, will they believe it?

Daniel acquired Corman from the family of Ambrose's wife, Theresa Small. Theresa being wealthy from the liquor business is ironic due to her temperance stance. The sale of the theaters doesn't sit well with Ambrose's business manager, Jack Doughty, to who the theaters represented his livelihood. Immediately following the sale, Ambrose disappears without a trace. Initially, Theresa doesn't want the police involved since she believes he is just out carousing, while his business associates believe he has met with some foul play. Increasingly, the public, especially the anti-Catholic forces, believe devout Catholic Theresa had Protestant Ambrose murdered so that she could funnel his money into the Catholic church. Believing her husband still alive, Theresa hires the young Cole Willis to find Ambrose. Cole is a junior detective with the Tratt Detective Agency, which handles much of the security for the Small family businesses. Edgar Tratt originally hired Cole as a favor to his father and acts as Cole's mentor. As Cole enters into his investigation, he believes that some people know more than they let on about Ambrose's disappearance, whether it be Jack, who absconded with $100,000 of the Small's money, Jack's slatternly wife Vivian Doughty, or Theresa herself, the latter despite Cole's growing attraction to her.
- The year is 2013. After a world-wide economic collapse in 2009, the entire middle-class is wiped out, leaving only high-class and low-class. The high-class rich reside in a place called Parkland. Parkland is surrounded by high walls so they would be separated from the low-class citizens. There are no jobs, so there is no way that low-class citizens would ever achieve a better life. The high-class citizens want what they call "eternity" life. They build TV billboards to advertise "Eternity" life, in which poor citizens donate organs which the rich citizens need to survive and live longer. In exchange, the remaining family of the donor will receive $10 million and residence in Parkland. One man, Sgt. Jimmy Quinn and his family are allowed to live in Parkland because of his achievements and is to be promoted detective at Parkland...without being a donor. When the donor for the creator of Eternity, Dr. Roland Parker, is killed, they are in a desperate search of another donor. After waking up one morning with a hangover, a donation contract, and fired from the police department, he believes these donations are not so voluntary; he sets out to find proof before his time is up.
