Als er mit Contis Hilfe tatsächlich auf Bewährung freikommt, kann die ehrgeizige Staatsanwältin Henry Mahn das Urteil kaum fassen. Sie beginnt zu recherchieren und stößt auf einen ungelösten Fall - einen bewaffneten Raubüberfall auf ein Wettbüro -, der Parallelen zu Stolpes Vorgehen beim Banküberfall aufweist. Und als die Tatwaffe in Stolpes Wohnung gefunden wird, fragt sich auch Conti, ob sie ihrem Mandanten noch trauen kann, und stellt ihn zur Rede. Doch Frank Stolpe behauptet steif und fest, nichts mit dem Überfall zu tun zu haben, und gibt Conti einen Hinweis, der sie zu seinem Bruder führt, einem drogenabhängigen Künstler. Stimmt Stolpes Behauptung? Welchem der beiden Brüder kann Conti glauben? Conti muss Stolpes Leben entwirren, doch statt auf Lösungen stößt sie auf weitere Rätsel. Wer ist Stolpe wirklich? Und welche Rolle spielt seine Frau in dem Ganzen? Conti will nicht moralisieren, sondern verstehen. Und Henry Mahn sinnt auf Gerechtigkeit.

Ehemann Achim wird zunehmend nervös und Angela hat nicht nur ein mörderisches Rätsel zu lösen, sondern auch privat ein kniffliges Problem.

Für Conti steht Henrys erster Fehler jedoch schon fest: Zu Unrecht wurde Liz vorschnell in U-Haft gesteckt und damit in der Öffentlichkeit für Stimmung und Hetze gesorgt. Doch kurz bevor der Haftrichter Liz' Freilassung gewährt, spricht diese plötzlich ein klares Geständnis aus und lässt ihre Verteidigerin in einer scheinbar aussichtslosen Position zurück. Mit Liz in U-Haft und Matt Westphal, dem Musikproduzenten und Kindsvater, als Nebenkläger steht Conti nicht nur vor einem besonders verzwickten Fall, sondern auch selbst wieder im Rampenlicht. Gemeinsam mit ihrem Schützling Carlo, der es sich im vergangenen Jahr in ihrer schicken Kanzlei an der Alster wohnlich eingerichtet hat, vertieft sich Conti in die Recherche und Verteidigungsstrategie. However, the rehearsals are anything but promising and Mirko's former fame as well as his history at home prove to be a heavy burden when starting over. Only when he feels again what music means to him and what the people of his past mean to him - his family and childhood sweetheart - does the artistic knot loosen.
