- 'Guns 'n' Hoses :100 Years of FDNY vs NYPD Baseball 'is a documentary by intrepid director Lance Miccio . The story covers the 100 year History of Baseball between New York's Bravest & Finest . The History of Baseball in American can be traced to Hoboken N.J. where the first game was played between two New York Teams . The contribution by the N.Y. Fire Department and Police Department can also be traced to the origins of professional baseball when N.Y. Fire Chief Alexander Cartwright created the written rules for baseball . In another strange twist of fate the first N.Y.Police Commissioner Big Bill Devery had Louis Tiffany create a Diamond encrusted interlocking N.Y. for the Police Department Medal of Valor in honor of the first policeman killed in the line of duty . Big Bill was also a part owner of New York's baseball team The Highlanders . In 1909 Big Bill Devery decided to adopt the logo for the team that would later become the N.Y.Yankees and the emblem would become the most recognized symbol in sports . It is said that the first paid admission for a baseball game was charity event put on by N.Y. Firemen and Policemen that would raise money for a fallen brother . A tradition that continues today . Interviews with Police and Firemen who suffered greatly on 911 describe how the game of baseball helped to heal themselves and recover over fallen brothers by honoring their families by raising money for The Widows and Orphan fund by both departments playing each other and donating proceeds to those who need it most .This tradition began 100 years ago and continues to this day. I take great joy in having directed this film as many of my family has served both departments for 3 Generations. My Grandfather NYPD Detective Joseph A. Miccio was killed in a gun battle in Brooklyn by Murder Inc . He would receive the NYPD Medal of Valor for his Ultimate Sacrifice . Play Ball!
