Fellow patient Jayne Smythe believes Valerie was having an affair with the younger Paul Vincent but Dr Jones admits she was sleeping with him,giving him an alibi. It turns out that Valerie had made an urgent call to a lawyer in France and Poole suspects she was about to sue the clinic for botched surgery caused by Tipping's failing eye sight. But events take another turn when the clinic is exposed as giving criminals new identities - and faces.
- Camille's friend, singer Aimee, collapses and dies on a boat owned by local entrepreneur Stephen Morrison and his wife Eloise,also a vocalist. Aimee was poisoned and her flat has been ransacked. She was due to leave for a recording contract in Miami and had rowed with Stephen about it whilst Eloise,jealous that Aimee was a better singer,tried to sabotage but not kill her. Poole defies Patterson whose priority is the arrest of a local illegal drinks ring to comfort Camille and catch the murderer. Dwayne and Fidel use spaced out waiter R.J. to help locate the booze supplier to no avail but Poole discovers a link between the drink smugglers and the murderer.
- Wheelchair-bound June Anderson is strangled in the villa she is renting with husband Doug and sister Janice. Though Janice is her beneficiary and has no alibi Poole suspects Doug, a former colleague whom he knows to be corrupt and an alcoholic. Cleaning woman Estelle admits to stealing June's jewels but the net widens when Janice sees one of the two men who own the rental company from which they hired the villa running from the murder scene. An arrest is soon made but Poole suspects that June's murder may be linked to one in England some while earlier and solves the case by proving the connection.
- Will Burton is a junior barrister known as the Escape Artist for his skill at having his clients' cases discharged in court. Will is happily married to Kate with a son, Jamie, and eyeing career advancement. His latest client, Liam Foyle, is accused of torturing and killing Sandra Mullins but Will manages to get the jury to acquit him via a loop-hole. Despite the victory in court, Foyle becomes obsessed with revenge when Will snubs Foyle's offer of a handshake. He stalks the family and files a complaint against Will, who arrives home to find Kate murdered and Foyle lurking outside their house.
- Maggie defends Foyle on the charge of killing Kate and, although she finds him a weird, unsettling young man, gets him bail. He immediately shadows Will's nine-year old son. Foyle gives Eileen Morris, a fellow cage bird breeder, as his alibi and, other than Will's statement, no forensics link him to the crime. Though barred from participating in the case Will does his own sleuthing, helped by colleagues Danny and Trevor, and links Eileen to the Sandra Mullins murder. He tries to tell Maggie he now knows Foyle was guilty then but she has a case to win to gain promotion. Will does however find a boot linked to the murder site in Eileen's lock-up. As the trial begins he is chief prosecution witness but Maggie manages to cast suspicion as to the truth of his story.
- Maggie successfully defends Foyle, who is acquitted of Kate's murder but Will warns her to be wary of her unsettling client. Feeling let down locally Will travels to the Scottish border in search of another post and runs into Foyle, who would appear to have followed him. There is a fight and a fire breaks out, Will calling the ambulance and Foyle taken to hospital. However there is to be another trial before Will's nightmare comes to an end.
- As the island prepares for a hurricane the corpse of Leo Downs, a researcher at the university's meteorological unit is found. Though favoured by department head Professor King,other colleagues saw him as a sycophant and a nerd though Amber Collins,ex-girlfriend of Leo's room-mate Damon,was in love with him. Yet all the suspects have alibis according to the time codes on their clocks. Poole discovers that King is advising an oil company planning to drill on the island . Leo's notes are nowhere to be found and a Skype message to his mother shows he was planning something big. Was it big enough to get him killed? After the hurricane has passed Poole at last finds the evidence encoded in Leo's computer which leads him to the killer and their motive.

- 1680: Young Ned Hawkins comes to Hadley, Massachusetts, to collect rents from the settlers on behalf of his father, the landlord. When native Americans attack Ned fights them off along with Pastor Russell and his daughter Hope in a party led by William Goffe, a fugitive regicide wanted by Charles II for his part in his father's execution. Goffe makes it clear to Ned that he sees his father as a greedy land grabber. In England republican Angelica Fanshawe falls foul of tyrannical clay pit owner Hardwick and his kinsman Judge Jeffreys, who forces Will Blood to spy on Angelica's 'nest of vipers' in return for his father's life. Now married to Roman Catholic John Francis Angelica is about to celebrate her daughter Beth's birthday when outlaws led by Goffe's son Abe arrive, robbing the guests, who include the Duke of Monmouth, Charles' illegitimate son who is hoping to mount a rebellion. Abe rides off with Beth and tells her that her true father was Edward Sexby, a man who gave his life fighting injustice. Back in Hadley Edward Randolph, the king's agent, tracks down Goffe, who commits suicide rather than be arrested. As Pastor Russell is taken to be tried for harbouring a regicide he asks Ned to warn Angelica that she is in danger.
- John Hawkins sends Ned back to England to avoid his being accused of helping a regicide whilst pastor Russell dies in prison and John insists that Hope marry widower Henry Cresswell so she will not be alone. In Oxfordshire Beth and Abe blow up the clay-pits where Hardwick has been using slaves as his work force and go on the run as highway robbers. They meet Ned, who is on his way to warn Angelica that her letters to Goffe have been intercepted. As a result Jeffreys, who is trying to provoke John Francis into denying the Popish Plot to kill the king, has his evidence and arrests John. Abe tells Ned that he is Goffe's son and soon afterwards attempts to kill king Charles but is himself wounded and nursed by Angelica. The boys escape but Beth and her mother are also arrested and charged with assisting a regicide. Angelica agrees to plead guilty if Beth is exiled to the Americas, rather than face execution. King Charles now seems to have eradicated all opposition and dissolves his parliament, giving himself total autocracy.

- King Charles gives Hardwick Angelica's land for new clay-pits but denies him the house until he has captured Abe. Aware that Angelica's faithful servants will be condemned to work in the clay-pits Abe goes to London to seek out his father's old friend Colonel Sidney and they plot to assassinate the king but they are caught and imprisoned. Beth's ship is wrecked on the shore at Massachusetts and she is adopted by the Wawanaki tribe, led by Masca, with whom she mutually falls in love and goes native. In Boston Hope marries Cresswell to the dismay of Ned, who has returned to the New World. He begins an affair with her but are discovered by Cresswell who forbids them to meet on pain of death. In order to clear the natives off their land Cresswell , acting in collusion with Kohn Hawkins, makes a present of blankets to the Wawanaki but they are deliberately infected with small-pox. Lacking any immunity many of the tribe, including Masca, die. Realizing that Cresswell has deliberately murdered them she stabs him in the presence of Ned.
- With Cresswell dead Hope and Ned are free to marry. They are, however, suspicious of John Hawkins' part in distributing the infected blankets and argue with him. As a result he has a heart attack and dies, asking Ned to take over his business though Ned is more concerned with helping Beth to hide Hope. Abe is visited in Oxford jail but Angelica's maid Agnes, who gives him a potion which simulates death and his 'corpse' is thrown into the plague pit, from where Agnes and her grandfather Adam rescue him. However Colonel Sidney is executed but Ned manages to obtain the colonel's writings, advocating freedom from Britain for the colonies, which he has smuggled into Boston. He and Hope are organizing a meeting for like-minded young colonists but they are interrupted by armed troopers who shoot and kill them. Beth returns to England to see the insurgents who took part in Monmouth's unsuccessful rebellion, being put to death. These include Agnes and Adam but she is reunited with Abe who has managed to escape.
