- Hidemi Takagi is an Asian American who was born and Japan and lives in Brooklyn, NY. She is married to a Haitian American and explores photography and art through her Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn community. Through stories shared, Hidemi learns what community means through this inner-city Bed-Stuy neighborhood. She takes photos of her neighbors which forms this kinship and allows the world to see them in the same lights as she does. This documentary is an introspective exploration of Hidemi's journey to as she connects with her neighboring Brooklyn residents and learns the meaning of community. Director Statement There is a deep connection with diversity, New York City, and the stories that connect us. When we heard Hidemi's personal stories of her move into Brooklyn and we instantly knew this was a story to pursue. She has been taking into her Brooklyn community in a way that garners attention and respect. Her neighbors speak highly of her, and she photographs them in a way that allows the public to see them in the most positive and humane way. We are also connected for the love of New York City and its different boroughs. There is so many interesting stories and Brooklyn is definitely one of them. Brooklyn has so much rich history that is changing and this documentary shows the many nuances of this on-going change. This is a unique opportunity to highlight Asian heritage within the black community and show the identities people choose for themselves. We are uniquely positioned to make this team because we have listened to Hidemi's stories, built rapport with her, and very importantly gained the trust of her neighbors as we created the proof-of-concept short film. They see all the making of this documentary as a huge positive for their voices to be seen and heard and their community the values they hold shown for the entire world.
