25 titles
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsGuy PearceCarrie-Anne MossJoe PantolianoA man with short-term memory loss attempts to track down his wife's murderer. This is number 25 of my top movies of all time. This movie is a psycho-thriller and an interesting and surprising puzzle of mysteries that makes you think and analyze until the very end.
- DirectorMilos FormanStarsJack NicholsonLouise FletcherMichael BerrymanIn the Fall of 1963, a Korean War veteran and criminal pleads insanity and is admitted to a mental institution, where he rallies up the scared patients against the tyrannical nurse.Number 24 is a brilliant and critical movie about freedom that touches you with its brilliant acting and credible characters and its intense story. An absolute classic and must see!
- DirectorJennifer LynchStarsJulia OrmondBill PullmanPell JamesTwo FBI agents attempt to clarify the murders occurring in a desolate region. They approach the witnesses of the latest incident with the help of the local police. All of them hide something and all have wildly different stories to tell.Jennifer Chambers Lynch almost does an as brilliant job as her father David Lynch by directing this strange and weird psycho thriller. The story is intelligent, the characters are very unique and special, the dialogs and ideas are well written and executed and this one has everything to become a cult movie.
- DirectorFranklin J. SchaffnerStarsSteve McQueenDustin HoffmanVictor JoryA French convict in the 1930s befriends a fellow criminal as the two of them begin serving their sentence in the South American penal colony on Devil's Island, which inspires the man to plot his escape. This is a brilliant movie about the will to freedom with two brilliant and legendary actors. I like this one a little bit more than "The Shawshank Redemption" and everyone that has seen this last movie should also watch the very inspiring, intense and diversified "Papillon".
- DirectorUli EdelStarsMartina GedeckMoritz BleibtreuJohanna WokalekA look at Germany's terrorist group, The Red Army Faction (RAF), which organized bombings, robberies, kidnappings, and assassinations in the late 1960s and '70s.This movie is a brilliant mixture of a drama and a documentary and the actors are doing an incredible job in this German flick. For anyone that is interested in German culture, history or society, this movie is a must see and it is easily the best German movie of the last few years.
- DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsAl PacinoDiane KeatonAndy GarciaFollows Michael Corleone, now in his 60s, as he seeks to free his family from crime and find a suitable successor to his empire.Well, I took the third and very underrated part of the series that I liked as much as the brilliant second part and even a little bit more than the first one that was excellent but had a couple of lengths. This movie is about getting old, wise and philosophical and how to fight the demons of the past and is probably the most intellectual part of the series. Al Pacino does an incredible job and also the often criticized Sofia Coppola is credible and simply charming. Another plus point is the acting of the most underrated actors of all times, the amazing Eli Wallach in the role of Don Altobello. The story mixes a love and crime story with an international and unpredictable conspiracy that leads to a brilliant grand finale.
- DirectorRenny HarlinStarsVal KilmerLL Cool JChristian SlaterA group of FBI trainees are taken to a remote island for simulation training. However, once there, they realize that they are being hunted by a serial killer, who might be someone amidst them. This movie is easily one of my favourite psycho thrillers. There is a great amount of tension from the beginning to the end and the actors do a very solid job in this intense and inspiring flick.
- DirectorDany BoonStarsKad MeradDany BoonZoé FélixA French public servant from Provence is banished to the far North. Strongly prejudiced against this cold and inhospitable place, he leaves his family behind to relocate temporarily there, with the firm intent to quickly come back. This is a really charming and touching French comedy about the Nord-Pas-de-Calais and its interesting and unique people and culture. This movie makes you laugh out loud and touches your heart as well and is probably one of the best French movies ever made and it is at least not about Paris this time.
- DirectorOliver HirschbiegelStarsMoritz BleibtreuChristian BerkelOliver StokowskiFor two weeks, 20 male participants are hired to play prisoners and guards in a prison. The "prisoners" have to follow seemingly mild rules, and the "guards" are told to retain order without using physical violence. This is one of the best German movies ever made, it shocks and touches you, it is intense and critical, it is philosophical and it keeps the tension very high. That's a great mixture for a very realistic drama.
- DirectorSergei EisensteinStarsAleksandr AntonovVladimir BarskiyGrigoriy AleksandrovIn the midst of the Russian Revolution of 1905, the crew of the battleship Potemkin mutiny against the brutal, tyrannical regime of the vessel's officers. The resulting street demonstration in Odessa brings on a police massacre. This is a Russian cult movie with legendary directing techniques, unforgettable scenes and inspiring dialogs and intense acting. This is a must see for anyone that is interested in the history of movies.
- DirectorJon JonesStarsDaniel CraigYekaterina RednikovaGabriel MachtA British college professor, working in Russia, investigates certain mysteries surrounding the life and death of Joseph Stalin. This is another movie about Russian culture and a historical fiction movie. Daniel Craig does a brilliant job in this surprisingly breathtaking and entertaining action thriller. This rather unknown straight to television movie is somehow my secret and special tip in this list.
- DirectorEric TsangStarsSamuel HuiKarl MakaSylvia ChangA "James Bond" type burglar named King Kong (Sam Hui) tries to redeem himself and joins forces with Albert "Baldy" Au (Karl Maka), a bumbling police detective from the states, to try to track down a rare set of stolen luscious diamonds before it ends up in the hands of a notorious European gangster named "White Gloves." The two unlikely duo are supervised by Supt. Nancy Ho, a masculine, fiery-tempered policewoman.Almost everyone of the five movies is great and that's why I simply chose the first one. Many agent parodies are just silly and boring, but this Asian version presents two brilliant, unique and funny main characters in hilarious and screamingly funny situations to save the world. This is way more charming and intelligent than any "Austin Powers" or "Oss 117" movie.
- DirectorClint EastwoodStarsClint EastwoodBee VangChristopher CarleyAfter a Hmong teenager tries to steal his prized 1972 Gran Torino, a disgruntled, prejudiced Korean War veteran seeks to redeem both the boy and himself.Clint Eastwood's late masterpiece shows us a very touching and intense story with unique and credible characters. The philosophical art of this tough movie is inspiring and touching and makes you think a lot even days after you have watched this flick. Well done!
- DirectorRonny YuStarsJet LiLi SunYong DongA biography of Chinese Martial Arts Master Huo Yuanjia, who is the founder and spiritual guru of the Jin Wu Sports Federation. This movie is way more than just a martial arts movie with beautifully arranged landscapes, historical towns and brilliant fighting scenes. This movie has a very philosophical touch and shows us how a egocentric and brutal warrior becomes a profound master teaching equality, respect and forgiveness. Jet Li does his most personal movie and easily the best job of his career.
- DirectorFrank MillerQuentin TarantinoRobert RodriguezStarsMickey RourkeClive OwenBruce WillisAn exploration of the dark and miserable Basin City and three of its residents, all of whom are caught up in violent corruption. From an artistic point of view, this movie is really innovating and delivers something groundbreaking and new for the eye. The story is brutal, breathtaking, intense and very entertaining in this revolutionary flick that features many great actors, many crazy scenes and tons of sex, crime and blood.
- DirectorPark Chan-wookStarsChoi Min-sikYoo Ji-taeKang Hye-jeongAfter being kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years, Oh Dae-Su is released, only to find that he must track down his captor in five days. This is a really excentric, shocking and weird masterpiece from South Korea. Philosophical and social critical elements are mixed with a puzzle of mysteries, a lot of interesting dialogs and a really bloody and dark revenge storyline.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioEmily MortimerMark RuffaloTeddy Daniels and Chuck Aule, two US marshals, are sent to an asylum on a remote island in order to investigate the disappearance of a patient, where Teddy uncovers a shocking truth about the place. This is easily the best movie of 2010 with a very interesting story, a dark and mysterious atmosphere, many crazy mysteries and especially with a brilliant acting by Leonardo DiCaprio. The flashbacks and illusions are captivating and make you think and analyze throughout the whole movie that shows us extreme situations and brilliant landscapes. I prefer this charming movie a lot to "Inception".
- DirectorÉric TessierStarsMarc-André GrondinNormand D'AmourSonia Vachon5150 ELM'S WAY is located at end of a quiet street in a small town. When Yannick fell off his bike. This is a realistic, shocking and intense horror movie or psycho thriller from Quebec. It is brilliantly filmed and played and an intense and rare masterpiece that should be more famous or known in the whole wide world than it is.
- DirectorAndrew StantonStarsBen BurttElissa KnightJeff GarlinIn the distant future, a small waste-collecting robot inadvertently embarks on a space journey that will ultimately decide the fate of mankind. This movie is intelligent, philosophical, charming and cute and way better than all the "Ice Ages", "Shreks" or "Cats and Dogs" around the planet. Wall-E is inspiring and has a soul and this movie is not just entertaining but has an important message and very mature statement about environment and true love to transmit. It touches kids as well as adults if you are not completely carved in stone or extremely conservative.
- DirectorTerry JonesStarsGraham ChapmanJohn CleeseMichael PalinBorn on the original Christmas in the stable next door to Jesus Christ, Brian of Nazareth spends his life being mistaken for a messiah. This is a very British and hilarious cult comedy movie with unforgettable songs, scenes and jokes for the ages.
- DirectorErik CanuelStarsMichel BeaudryPatrice BélangerPierre BoudreauTwo Canadian detectives, one from Ontario and the other from Quebec, must work together when a murdered victim is found on the Ontario-Quebec border.Let's head to my ultimate top 5, a really tough choice. This is the best Canadian movie ever done that presents us the Quebecker's culture and way of life and the culture and style of the English speaking part of Canada. This movie is extremely funny, tension filled and full of action and connects the two nations in a unique and unforgettable way.
- DirectorDavid ZuckerStarsLeslie NielsenPriscilla PresleyO.J. SimpsonIncompetent police Detective Frank Drebin must foil an attempt to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II.Leslie Nielson (rest in peace!) is by far my favourite comedy actor. The Canadian does an incredible job in the three movies that are all almost equally great. Ridicolous and incredible scenes of absurd humour make you laugh all way long and the three flicks are full of cult dialogs. I will never get bored to watch those movies and laugh each time again and that's why these are the best comedy movies ever made in history to me.
- DirectorJim SharmanStarsTim CurrySusan SarandonBarry BostwickA newly-engaged couple have a breakdown in an isolated area and must seek shelter at the bizarre residence of Dr. Frank-n-Furter.This is an absolute stunning and unforgettable cult movie and musical. Extravagant and excentric characters, catchy songs and many hilarious scenes make you appreciate this cult flick that is still shown and presented in concert halls, theatres, cinemas or simply at parties today. That's rock'n'roll with style!
- DirectorDavid LynchStarsBill PullmanPatricia ArquetteJohn RoseliusAnonymous videotapes presage a musician's murder conviction, and a gangster's girlfriend leads a mechanic astray.David Lynch is a brilliant and unique director and each of his films is a masterpiece. A part of the brilliant series "Twin Peaks", this movie is my favourite movie by him even if "Mulholland Drive" comes quite close. This is not just entertainment, it is surreal art that makes you think and analyze and each time you watch this cult flick, you discover something new and more interesting. This detailed movie is not easy to appreciate and impossible to understand but it has a very unqiue and crazy style and touches your heart and your mind. A part of that, the film score is simply brilliant and the acting is amazing. Any questions?
- DirectorSergio LeoneStarsClint EastwoodEli WallachLee Van CleefA bounty hunting scam joins two men in an uneasy alliance against a third in a race to find a fortune in gold buried in a remote cemetery. Here it is, my favourite movie of all times and it was a really close run between the first and the second place. But everything about this western is stunning and amazing. It is brilliantly filmed. The film score is unforgettable. The film is diversified, the scenes surprising, sometimes brutal, sometimes hilarious, sometimes filled with tension but always charming. Clint Eastwood does the job of his life as an actor in this movie but the brilliant Eli Wallach is even better. His role as Tuco is probably my most favourite movie personality of all times. The grand finale of the movie is unforgettable. Over almost three hours of lengths, there is no second of boredom. To keep it short: This is a masterpiece. It is the best Western ever done (even if Sergio Leone's "Once upon a time in the west" comes really close) and today the best movie of all times to me.
