by rivethead808 | created - 26 Jan 2011 | updated - 25 Feb 2011 | Public

My favorite films that have less than 600 votes on IMDb. Please watch them for they are awesome and overlooked. Some may be less than available, but if you can find them, watch them :). In ranked order for the most part.

I tried to do <500, but I kept running into fillms with like 532 or something, but didnt quite want to extend it out to 1000. Please comment

64 Metascore

Directors: Calum Grant, Joshua Atesh Litle | Stars: James Curry, Linda Noveroske, Dan Plumlee, Aubrey Ankrum

Votes: 752

A very realistic depiction of what it would be like years after "armageddon". Plays out like a documentary, but dont let that scare you off. None of the actors are known. Dont let that scare you off either. This film is truly one of a kind. What other film shows you the end of the world 12 years hence...normally you only see the days and weeks after.

2. Passion in the Desert (1997)

PG-13 | 91 min | Adventure, Drama

This film takes my breath away every time I even think about it. And to think I continually passed it up c. 1997-1998 when it was on the new release wall at Blockbuster. Thinking back though, I dont think I would have truly appreciated its beauty then though so maybe thats a good thing. I remember working at Hollywood Video years later remembering nothing but the cover art of this gem NEEDING to find out what it was. Once I did, I didnt hesitate to buy it on VHS, and then as soon as it came available on DVD, I bought that too. Ben Daniels is amazing. He hasnt been in much, but I wish he was. This film will haunt you long after youve seen it. Brilliant, unabashed, romantic (NO preconceived notions here please), poignant, and just....beautiful.

3. My Twentieth Century (1989)

Director: Ildikó Enyedi | Stars: Dorota Segda, Oleg Yankovskiy, Paulus Manker, Péter Andorai

Votes: 2,002 | Gross: $0.68M

Mesmerizing. Starts out like The Little Matchstick Girl (or whatever that classic story is called) and gives you two dreamlike worlds of two very different -- yet the same -- girls.

4. Alberto Express (1990)

The review I posted 05/12/2005 (edited slightly):

I originally rented this about four years ago solely based on the fact that Dominique Pinon is in it. Now, to my disappointment, he has maybe a total of five minutes screen time, but the film is still excellent. Basically our main character is about to become a father and what he doesn't realize is the deal that his father made with him to pay back EVERY single debt he ever incurred throughout childhood and beyond, was sincere. The beginning scene with dad and his adding machine is hilarious! Realizing this, he goes on a quest that involves leaving his about-to-pop-any-minute wife behind to see what he can do to either satisfy the debt, or come up with a sly way of getting out of it. He spends most of the film on a train where he encounters many different personalities, eavesdropping, and ultimately, thieving his way through all the passengers in order to come up with the aforementioned funds. A hilarious romp that includes his dead ancestors coming to him to shed light on the "family tradition" and a wonderful small role as the engineer by the always excellent Pinon. The only thing that makes me give it a 9 instead of a 10 is the fact that it is never really made believable what the leverage is the father has over the son and his new family should he not repay the debt. Other than that, I highly recommend this to anyone that has a dry, dark sense of humor and to those who like strangeness bordering on surrealism. This could almost be a Raoul Ruiz production or even a light version of Bunuel.

5. Tenderness of the Wolves (1973)

Not Rated | 82 min | Biography, Crime, Drama

Using his status as a police informant to procure his victims, baby-faced, shaven-headed Fritz Haarmann dismembers their bodies after death and sells the flesh to restaurants, dumping the remainder out of sight.

Director: Ulli Lommel | Stars: Kurt Raab, Jeff Roden, Margit Carstensen, Ingrid Caven

Votes: 1,583

I really hate this plot description. It makes it seem cheap and cheesy the way its described. There arent any other cannibals and he sells the meat to unknowing citizens. Its also done rather tastefully (if you can believe that). Its not a gore fest.

6. Pep Squad (1998)

R | 94 min | Comedy, Crime, Horror

Cherry wants to be a prom queen. Trouble is, she's not nominated. Double trouble is, she's not like the other girls. She'll stop at nothing, not even murder and mayhem, to get what she wants.

Director: Steve Balderson | Stars: Brooke Balderson, Amy Kelly, Jennifer Dreiling, Summer Makovkin

Votes: 496

"Scerrah Terra!"

Firecracker and Watch Out (same director -- Steve Balderson) are a little easier to find, so maybe check those out first before you try to find this one, but I still consider this his best. I watch it about once a year on my VHS that flashes in and out of color constantly (the film is color -- my copy is a very used VHS rental). What I wouldnt give to own the DVD LOL

7. Three Lives and Only One Death (1996)

123 min | Comedy, Crime, Fantasy

Take a walk into the dreamlike world of filmmaker Raul Ruiz as he takes us to Paris for a twisting ride. Four strangely symmetrical stories unfold involving love, lust, crime, and time.

Director: Raúl Ruiz | Stars: Marcello Mastroianni, Anna Galiena, Marisa Paredes, Melvil Poupaud

Votes: 1,545

A modern-day Buñuel. Its a shame that Raoul Ruiz is not more recognized and his films not more readily available.

8. Static (1985)

R | 93 min | Comedy, Drama

An eccentric and possibly brilliant young man, troubled by the death of his parents, claims to be readying a world-changing invention.

Director: Mark Romanek | Stars: Keith Gordon, Amanda Plummer, Bob Gunton, Barton Heyman

Votes: 736

Unfortunately EXTREMELY hard to find. Youre either going to have to sit around waiting for one to pop up on ebay or download it somewhere. If I knew how to convert my VHS to the computer I would. Its a brilliant little gem of a film

9. Genesis (I) (1998)

30 min | Short, Horror

A sculptor is traumatized by the death of his wife in a car accident. He builds a sculpture in her memory. As the lifelike sculpture begins to bleed through the cracks of clay, the sculptor's flesh mutates and crumbles away...

Director: Nacho Cerdá | Stars: Pep Tosar, Trae Houlihan

Votes: 1,848

Its a short film, and normally I dont count them, but this one is A-friggin-mazing. There is a DVD with 3 of Nacho Cerda's early short films on it (this, Aftermath, and one pretty sophomoric short film about a student freezing time), but you really only want to get that DVD for this film and for the novelty (brace yourself) of Aftermath

10. Claire (2001)

Loosely based on a Japanese fairytale, an elderly male couple on a farm in the 1920's South find a little girl from the moon inside an ear of corn and raise her as their own.

Director: Milford Thomas | Stars: Pat Bell, Mish P. DeLight, James Ferguson, Toniet Gallego

12. The Tale of Sweeney Todd (1997 TV Movie)

92 min | Crime, Drama, Horror

When a merchant goes missing, a young American investigates the disappearance and discovers the truth about Sweeney Todd, a skilled barber, and his business partner Mrs. Lovett, a butcher.

Director: John Schlesinger | Stars: Ben Kingsley, Campbell Scott, Joanna Lumley, Selina Boyack

Votes: 852

My personal favorite version of the Sweeney Todd story. Ben Kingsley is amazing as usual. It was a Blockbuster "exclusive" and I remember going around to every store in the LA area trying to track down a copy. I never did find one there as they had already pulled it, but I ended up finding one at a pawn shop believe it or not

13. Mexican Bus Ride (1952)

74 min | Comedy

Director: Luis Buñuel | Stars: Lilia Prado, Carmelita González, Esteban Mayo, Luis Aceves Castañeda

Votes: 1,453

A lesser-known work by Buñuel, and not with his trademark surrealism, but still a fantastic film. I walked away disappointed, and yet I have grown to love it more and more every day.

14. Pascali's Island (1988)

PG-13 | 104 min | Drama

15. Anacardium (2001)

94 min | Drama, Thriller

A dark suspense thriller about revenge, love and deception revolving around a wronged husband who plots to confront his wife''s lover.

Director: Scott Thomas | Stars: Frank John Hughes, Richard Ruccolo, Laura Cayouette, Bob Rumnock

Votes: 149

Not very many people like stage-play-like films, but if you are one of those that does, then please see this. I also highly recommend The Man From Earth although this and Anacardium have nothing in common other than they both play out like a stage-play. I didnt love every moment of this, and I wont call it a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but I still highly recommend it

16. Barjo (1992)

Dont watch this one unless you know what youre getting into. Its non-linear, there is no plot. Its just a series of tableaus (tableaux?). Its really a wonderful film, but only if youre ready for it.

(The 2nd Raoul Ruiz film on the list...hmmm)

18. Sorum (2001)

New addition to the list. I would have never dreamed that this had less than 600 votes. Im positive there are tons more people who have seen it, but it just got forgotten about. I saw this movie probably 20 or so times when I was a kid.

Paul Bartel "borrowed" the college camera every weekend for...I forget how long (its on the interview on VHS that I cant be arsed to play and find out, sorry) to finally come out with this film. By normal standards its....OK...decent. But you begin to see the workings of Paul Bartel and its just a fun piece to add to your repertoir when you get the chance. Not a "prostitute with a heart of gold", but a pornographer with a heart of gold. OK, not quite, but from what little I remember, the film does try and make him as sympathetic as possible.

I *know* what the cover looks like, and Ill grant that I dont recall a whole lot from this film, but its not a Skinemax flick as the cover art would lead one to believe....they had to sell the film somehow I guess... Not saying its amazing, but worth a watch

Its AWFUL! But its just so damn deliciously horribly awfully wonderful. Seriously: It is one of THE most horrible films ever made. But this is the film that I show everyone I meet who is an MSTer.

Dont believe the plot outline here on IMDb. Its not a slasher. The "antagonist" is a foam "penis puppet" who resides in a trunk who, with a prepubescent male voice, convinces everyone he gets alone for more than 5 seconds that they are a loser and should either a) kill themselves b) kill someone else (very messily) and/or c) have sex with it.
