Actresses whose careers are over by the age of 40, I am not listing women who died. Just adult actesses who left the profession for one reason or another. Also I am not listing former child actors who quit before establishing themselves as adult actors. Most actresses find it hard to find roles approaching the age of 40. This will be an ongoing list.

Actress Barbara Lang was a beautiful, brassy "B"-level blonde of the 50s in the Barbara Payton mold. Lang's life was certainly not as reckless as that of Payton, who also flourished during the 1950s, but it did have its share of roller coaster rides. She also did not make as many films as Payton -- three to be exact.
Born Barbara Jean Bly on March 2, 1928, Barbara was the daughter of a silent movie dancer, Esther Kaufman, who went by the name Maureen Knight, and a non-professional father, Leonidis Bly. Born in Pasadena, California, she was raised in the Los Angeles area and started out her teen years toiling as a jewelry sales girl and used her nubile features and curvy figure to her advantage as a part-time model. She also earned tips as a cocktail lounge singer and piano player but avoided nightclubs per se because of the propositioning male clientèle that frequented them.
Out of nowhere Lang woke up one day in late 1953 unable to move. Stricken by polio, her speech was affected and her legs and facial muscles paralyzed. Told that she might never walk again, she miraculously recovered after months and months of treatment but the lingering effects of her illness robbed her of much of her stamina and she would tire easily for the rest of her life.
After her recovery she pursued an acting career, and one of Barbara's earliest acting jobs was on a few episodes of "Death Valley Days" in 1955 and 1956. Barbara met her first husband, actor and co-star Alan Wells, on one of those episodes. The couple married in 1956. A talent scout happened to catch Barbara's appearance on the show and MGM took an interest. As a result, she signed with the studio and began taking dramatic lessons. The starlet's first role was a bit part in Hot Summer Night (1957). She then progressed to the lead role in the prison noir House of Numbers (1957) as the wife of jailbird Jack Palance, which was actually filmed inside the walls of Folsom Prison. It seemed Barbara was on her way.
A huge disappointment then for Barbara was when she lost out on the co-starring role opposite Elvis Presley in Jailhouse Rock (1957). After being initially named by the studio for the part, Judy Tyler was given the coveted role instead. Tragically, Ms. Tyler was killed in a car crash shortly after the filming. Instead Barbara went on to play the supporting role of Ginger D'Amour, a 30's gangster-styled showgirl in the film noir Party Girl (1958) starring veteran MGM stars 'Robert Taylor' and Cyd Charisse
In the meantime Barbara tried to keep on track with TV guest roles playing sexy foils in both crime drama ("Maverick," "77 Sunset Strip") and comedy ("The Bob Cummings Show," "Car 54, Where Are You?") but things soon slowed down to a halt. With her annulment from Wells finalized in 1958 and a career going into an abrupt tailspin, Barbara attempted suicide in 1959 with an overdose of sleeping pills.
She recovered but her career did not. She later married and divorced a second time. Little was heard from Barbara until her reported death from pneumonia at the relatively young age of 54 in Los Angeles.Very beautiful blonde actress, first saw her opposite Jack Palance in House of Numbers. - Best remembered as the second talking-era "Jane" (following Maureen O'Sullivan) of the durable Tarzan jungle film series and the only one in the sound era to play the role opposite two different Tarzan's (Johnny Weissmuller and Lex Barker, lovely Brenda was born Betty Leabo in Missouri, raised in Los Angeles, and nicknamed "Graftina" by her father when she was a girl. Attending UCLA for four years, the lovely blonde became a photographer's model to help pay her tuition. A 20th Century-Fox talent scout noticed a fashion layout of her and immediately signed her on.
The studio changed her name to "Brenda Joyce" after silent star Alice Joyce and immediately gave her an impressive movie debut with The Rains Came (1939) starring Tyrone Power and Myrna Loy in which she received fine reviews. Building her up to the public as a sexy single girl, she was subsequently showcased in Here I Am a Stranger (1939) opposite Richard Greene and partnered with John Payne in Maryland (1940).
The studio didn't take kindly to her impulsive 1941 marriage to army husband Owen Ward and supposedly punished her by relegating her to "B" films. Three children were the result of this first marriage -- Pam, Timothy and Beth. Brenda eventually lost interest in her career, but was coaxed back to the film set when brunette Maureen O'Sullivan left the Tarzan series and Johnny Weissmuller approved the athletic beauty as his new blonde swinging mate. Beginning a four-year excursion with the film Tarzan and the Amazons (1945), Brenda continued on as Jane after Weissmuller left (actor Lex Barker took over), but finally decided enough was enough. Brenda left after her fifth movie, Tarzan's Magic Fountain (1949), and just walked away -- never to return.
Following her movie career, Brenda moved to the Washington D.C. area and worked with the Refugee Services for nearly 10 years in which she helped displaced persons find employment and places to live. This line of work eventually had her relocate to the Carmel, California area and she worked with Catholic Resettlement in Seaside, California (near Monterey). Besieged by personal and health problems in later years, she endured a painful divorce from Ward in 1960 after 19 years of marriage. She was then married and divorced twice more. Suffering from dementia in her twilight years, she stayed with her children at various stages until she was forced to be institutionalized in a nursing home in Santa Monica, California. Brenda died there of complications from pneumonia on Independence Day in 2009.She impressed me with her performance in her debut in "The Rains Came". She was a rising star with 20th Century Fox. Brigitte Bardot was born on September 28, 1934 in Paris, France. Her father had an engineering degree and worked with his father in the family business. Brigitte's mother encouraged her daughter to take up music and dance, and she proved to be very adept at it. By the time she was 15, Brigitte was trying a modeling career, and found herself in the French magazine "Elle". Her incredible beauty readily apparent, Brigitte next tried films. In 1952, she appeared on screen for the first time as Javotte Lemoine in Crazy for Love (1952). Two more films followed and it was also the same year she married Roger Vadim (the union lasted 3½ years). Capitalizing on her success in French films, Brigitte made her first American production in Act of Love (1953) with Kirk Douglas, but she continued to make films in France. Brigitte's explosive sexuality took the United States by storm, and the effect she had on millions of American men who had not seen a woman like her in a long, long time--if ever--was electric. Rise to the phrase "sex kitten" and fascination of her in the United States consisted of magazines photographs and dubbed over French films--good, bad or indifferent, her films drew audiences--mainly men--into theaters like lemmings. In 1965, she appeared as herself in the American-made Dear Brigitte (1965) with James Stewart (she only appeared in one scene). Just before she turned 40, Brigitte retired from movies after filming The Edifying and Joyous Story of Colinot (1973). She prefers life outside of stardom. While it enabled her to become internationally famous, it also carried with it annoyances. It was not anything for her to have "fans" enter her house or wander around the grounds of her home in the hopes of getting a glimpse of her or to take something that belonged to her. Paparazzi constantly hounded her with their cameras. She has been so soft-hearted that some people even have taken advantage of her generosity. After her life in the spotlight, Brigitte went on to become a leading spokesperson for animal rights and started the "Foundation Brigitte Bardot" dedicated solely to that cause. Her work in that realm is, perhaps, far greater than any film she could have made. Brigitte has been married to Bernard d'Ormale since 1992 and they reside in St. Tropez with their nearly 50 pets.Legendary French "sex kitten". Became an international sensation in "....And God Created Woman". Never went to Hollywood and good for her they could never figure out what to do with sexy women. Nevertheless she remained an international sensation throughout her career. Career ran 1952-1973, Retired at age 39 and became an animal rights advocate.- Lovely, radiant, enticing, and charismatic blonde Candice Rialson was perhaps the most dynamic and personable actress to appear in enjoyably trashy drive-in pictures throughout the 1970's. Rialson was born on December 18, 1951 in Santa Monica, California and grew up in Orange County, California. She was crowned Miss Hermosa Beach at age 18. After making her film debut in an uncredited bit as a bikini-clad beauty on the beach in The Gay Deceivers (1969), the pert 'n' perky Candice enlivened a bunch of choice down 'n' dirty exploitation features: She was a naive, innocent hitchhiker who runs afoul of kinky perverts in the bizarre Pets (1973), one of Gloria Grahame's slutty daughters in the sleazy Mama's Dirty Girls (1974), a hapless lass with a talking and singing vagina (!) in the outrageously bawdy Chatterbox! (1977), a small-town tramp in the immensely entertaining Moonshine County Express (1977), and a stuck-up starlet in the nifty Stunts (1977). Following her winningly easy 'n' breezy turns in the amiably silly soft-core comedies Candy Stripe Nurses (1974) and Summer School Teachers (1975) for legendary B-movie filmmaker Roger Corman, Candice expertly essayed her best, most substantial, and appealing role as "Candy Wednesday", a bubbly aspiring actress who winds up working for the chintzy schlock movie studio "Miracle Pictures" ("If it's a good film, then it's a Miracle") in the very clever and hilarious junk film parody Hollywood Boulevard (1976). Moreover, Rialson also had bit parts in the mainstream features The Eiger Sanction (1975), Logan's Run (1976) and Silent Movie (1976) and made guest appearances on the TV shows Maude (1972), Shaft (1973), Switch (1975), Adam's Rib (1973), and Fantasy Island (1977).
After doing yet another minor part as a nurse playing with a rake in Winter Kills (1979), Candice Rialson voluntarily quit acting at the end of the 1970's, got married, settled down in Studio City, California, and had one child. However, she remained a cult favorite of 1970's exploitation film fans. Quentin Tarantino, in particular, was such a strong admirer of Rialson's work that he reportedly patterned the Bridget Fonda character in Jackie Brown (1997) after her. Candice Rialson passed away at age 54 from liver disease on March 31, 2006. Clara Gordon Bow, destined to become "The It Girl", was born on July 29, 1905 in Brooklyn, New York, and was raised in poverty and violence. Her often absentee and brutish father could not or did not provide and her schizophrenic mother tried to slit Clara's throat when the girl spoke of becoming an actress. Bow, nonetheless, won a photo beauty contest which launched her movie career that would eventually number 58 films, from 1922 to 1933.
The movie It (1927) defined her career. The film starred Clara as a shopgirl who was asked out by the store's owner. As you watch the silent film you can see the excitement as she prepared for her date with the boss, her friend trying hard to assist her. She used a pair of scissors to modify her dress to try to look "sexier." The movie did much to change society's mores as there were only a few years between World War I and Clara Bow, but this movie went a long way in how society looked at itself. Clara was flaming youth in rebellion. In the film she presented a worldly wisdom that somehow sex meant having a good time. But the movie shouldn't mislead the viewer, because when her boss tries to kiss her goodnight, she slaps him. At the height of her popularity she received over 45,000 fan letters a month. Also, she was probably the most overworked and underpaid star in the industry. With the coming of sound, her popularity waned. Clara was also involved in several court battles ranging from unpaid taxes to being in divorce court for "stealing" women's husbands. After the court trials, she made a couple of attempts to get back in the public eye. One was Call Her Savage (1932) in 1932. It was somewhat of a failure at the box office and her last was in 1933 in a film called Hoopla (1933).
She then married cowboy star Rex Bell at 26 and retired from the film world at 28. She doted on her two sons and did everything to please them. Haunted by a weight problem and a mental imbalance, she never re-entered show business. She was confined to sanitariums from time to time and prohibited access to her beloved sons. She died of a heart attack in West Los Angeles, on September 26, 1965 at age 60. Today she is finding a renaissance among movie buffs, who are recently discovering the virtues of silent film. The actress who wanted so much to be like the wonderful young lady in It (1927) has the legacy of her films to confirm that she was a wonderful lady and America's first sex symbol. The original "It" girl, a silent era sensation but never made headways in the sound era, active 1922-1933, retired at age 28. Cleo Moore was born Cleouna Moore on October 31, 1924 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the daughter of a building contractor. Both her parents were deeply involved in Democratic politics which, in Louisiana, was an all consuming passion with a lot of families in the 1920s. Cleo began her trek to stardom when she participated in school plays in high school. When she was about 20 years old, Cleo wed Palmer Long, son of the late Huey "Kingfish" Long in 1944. Palmer's father had been one of the movers and shakers in Louisiana politics for years, first serving as governor and then the United States Senate. He was assassinated in 1935 in the state capitol building. The marriage was doomed to fail, having lasted a mere six weeks. After Cleo finished high school, she moved with her family to California where her father was anticipating the end of World War II and the building boom that was expected to follow. Once in sunny California, it did not take long to get "discovered".
She was spotted by an RKO talent scout while attending a boxing fight at the Hollywood Legion Stadium and persuaded to take a screen test. She passed. Her first film was Congo Bill (1948). Then she went back to work at her family's building business and did some modeling. Two years later, in 1950, the shapely blonde appeared in a Western, Rio Grande Patrol (1950). She received fifth billing in the movie that went nowhere. That year proved very busy for Cleo as she appeared in five other films. In Bright Leaf (1950), a film about the tobacco industry, was a well-received one even though she had only a small part. Gambling House (1950) was somewhat of a personal breakthrough. Instead of having unknowns as her co-stars, Cleo had Victor Mature and William Bendix. Hard as it was to break into films, that one really grabbed the public's attention; she seemed destined to stay in B films.
She appeared in On Dangerous Ground (1951) with Ida Lupino and Robert Ryan, but had only a minor part. For an actress who had a wonderful talent, she seemed to be picked because of how her physical attributes played on the screen. That seemed secondary to the moguls of the studios. She was very beautiful, but Cleo wanted them to look past that and see the talent she possessed. In 1954 (now under contract to Universal-International), she appeared in two more box-office bombs, The Other Woman (1954) and Bait (1954). The following year, she made two more films, Hold Back Tomorrow (1955) and Women's Prison (1955). Although second class movies, they fared well at the box-office because of the subject matter and Cleo. Other than that, they did not have a lot going for them. In 1957, Cleo starred in her final film, along with her sister, Mara Lea, Hit and Run (1957). She had star billing, but it was another box-office bomb.
Cleo then left the motion picture industry forever. She married a real estate tycoon in 1961 and settled down to domesticity and the life of a Beverly Hills socialite. Her only child, a daughter, Debra, was born in 1963. Less than a week before her 49th birthday (October 25, 1973), Moore died of a heart attack in Inglewood, California. To her legions of fans, she remains their favorite sex symbol of the 1950s, and others languish knowing that her talent could have sent her to loftier heights instead of being wasted in minor roles in substandard B films.Very beautiful B movie blonde bombshell specialized in playing Bad Girls, career lasted a brief 9 years 1948-1957. The girl who one day would be known as "Winnipeg's Sweetheart" was born at Grace Hospital on December 4, 1921, as Edna Mae Durbin. In her early childhood there were no obvious signs that one day she would be a bigger box office attraction than Shirley Temple. Renamed Deanna Durbin for show business purposes, by age 21 she was the most highly paid female star in the world. Her major motion pictures were Three Smart Girls (1936), Mad About Music (1938) and That Certain Age (1938). By the time she was 18 her income was $250,000 a year. Her voice was often described as "natural and beautiful" and her version of "One Fine Day" from Madame Butterfly, became a classic. Deanna was a Hollywood star in every way. There were Deanna Durbin dolls and dresses. An engineering firm named its so-called dream home in her honor. Her first screen kiss was described in a headline story across the continent. What makes Deanna Durbin's story different is that she was never comfortable with adulation. When she was at the top of her career as Hollywood's leading actress and singer, she turned her back on that world for a life of seclusion. Her first two marriages had failed, and before she married her third husband, director Charles David, she set one condition: he had to promise that she could have what she yearned for - "the life of nobody". Her seclusion is incomplete. She lives in the French village of Neauphlé-le-Château, and for over 35 years has resisted every approach from film companies. Her husband has told journalists that "Mario Lanza pleaded with her for years to make a film with him. But she will never go back to that life." Flashy, leggy, bouffant blonde Dorothy Provine was a solid screen representation of the Kennedyesque era when life seemed so full of fun, so innocent and so optimistic. This sparkling beauty also gave TV audiences a double dose blast to the past via her popular co-starring roles on late 50s/early 60s series TV. A talented girl whose comedic gifts were never sufficiently tapped into by Hollywood, Dorothy nevertheless secured a dedicated fan base merely on her sunny smile, creamy good looks and carefree radiance alone.
Graduating from the University of Washington with a degree in Theater Arts. Hollywood folklore has it that the South Dakota-born (but raised in San Francisco) actress landed the role of the notorious femme bank robber in the low-budget "B" film The Bonnie Parker Story (1958) just three days after arriving in Hollywood. It certainly proved to be a lucky break, although it didn't clinch the movie stardom she might have expected. On the contrary, Dorothy was forced to languish in such predicable programmers as Riot in Juvenile Prison (1959) and Live Fast, Die Young (1958), while playing the gigantic, radiation-exposed love interest in the poorly-executed The 30 Foot Bride of Candy Rock (1959) opposite rolypoly comedian Lou Costello in his only film effort after breaking up with partner Bud Abbott. Fortunately, TV made up for her lack of success on film.
Signed up by Warner Bros. and seemingly better suited for the small screen, Dorothy became one of the more visible female faces on TV and would be best remembered for her period roles as 1890s saloon singer Rocky Shaw, the friend of "Gold Rush" fortune seekers Roger Moore and Jeff York in The Alaskans (1959) and, better yet, as Pinky Pinkham, the Charleston-dancing flapper in the Warner Bros. adventure series The Roaring 20's (1960).
A vivacious guest on scores of other TV shows, Dorothy occasionally reappeared in lightweight 1960s films wherein she generally projected a squeaky-clean image playing various sparkly housewives, girlfriends and sisters. She was part of the all-star zaniness in It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (1963) as Milton Berle's wife; appeared as Jack Lemmon's bright-eyed better half in the suburban comedy Good Neighbor Sam (1964); played Hayley Mills's beleaguered older sis in the feline caper That Darn Cat! During this time Dorothy occasionally made use of her vocal talents on the live stage, and appeared briefly as a duo with George Burns in a 1963 Las Vegas nightclub act, replacing Burns' ailing wife Gracie Allen, who by this time had fully retired due to serious heart problems. Eventually, however, she lost interest in her career.
Dorothy abruptly left the business in 1969 after marrying director Robert Day, who was involved in several of the Tarzan movies. She showed up a couple of times on TV in the 70s but, for the most part, found her self-imposed retirement completely to her liking. Gloria Warren was briefly touted as a potential rival to Deanna Durbin. As a singer (soprano), she was noted for her rendition of "Always in My Heart', a song adapted from Ernesto Lecuona's Siempre en mi corazón and first popularized by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra. Despite a strong build-up, enduring fame, however, was not to be hers. A personable brunette, Gloria was born in Wilmington, Delaware, to jeweler and watchmaker Herman Weiman, a Russian-Jewish immigrant, and his wife Julia Weiss, who was a Hungarian Jewish émigré. She was regarded as a child prodigy, tutored by Budapest-born concert pianist Agnes Laszlo and adept at the instrument by the tender age of nine. In addition, she took singing, dancing and acting lessons. Gloria's musical talents may not have attracted more than local attention if not for her ambitious mother. In 1940, Julia managed to finagle a five minute interview with a local radio producer, who became so impressed by the 14-year old that he arranged for a Hollywood talent scout to come out and assess her abilities. Two years later, Gloria signed a seven-year deal with Warner Brothers. For the usual marquee reasons, the studio changed her surname to Warren and this moniker was also adopted by her parents.
Gloria's brief motion picture career was launched (and almost instantly scuttled) with Always in My Heart (1942), a domestic melodrama with music, in which she played the teenage daughter of Kay Francis. The hackneyed and contrived screenplay did the cast no favours. Bosley Crowther, reviewing for The New York Times, wrote "virtually everything else that is antique was done to her in this film. Miss Warren is a pleasing little lady - a bit mature for her reported fifteen years- and she has a reedy voice which she handles rather well. So you would think the Warners could have managed to provide for her debut a tale just a shade more refreshing..." Apparently not, since she was loaned out to RKO for her next picture, Cinderella Swings It (1943). The last of the increasingly out-of-favour 'Scattergood Baines' comedy series with Guy Kibbee, this too failed on every level and was panned by critics and audiences alike, though co-star Gloria was generally regarded as the film's sole bright spot. After two pictures considered box-office poison, an unsurprising three year long hiatus followed. She was cast as female leads on three more occasions: not in musicals (which would have made sense) but in forgettable quota quickies for Poverty Row studios, including a lesser entry in the Charlie Chan series.
By 1948, Gloria had given up on film acting to raise a family, having married businessman Peter Gold (eventually CEO and chairman of the Price Pfister Brass Manufacturing Company) two years earlier. They had two children. Gloria Warren died in Los Angeles on September 11 2021 at the age of 95.Warner Bother's answer to Deanna Durbin career spanned 1942 to 1947 retired at age 21. On November 12, 1929, Grace Patricia Kelly was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to wealthy parents. Her girlhood was uneventful for the most part, but one of the things she desired was to become an actress which she had decided on at an early age. After her high school graduation in 1947, Grace struck out on her own, heading to New York's bright lights to try her luck there. Grace worked some as a model and made her debut on Broadway in 1949. She also made a brief foray into the infant medium of television. Not content with the work in New York, Grace moved to Southern California for the more prestigious part of acting -- motion pictures. In 1951, she appeared in her first film entitled Fourteen Hours (1951) when she was 22. It was a small part, but a start nonetheless. The following year she landed the role of Amy Kane in High Noon (1952), a western starring Gary Cooper and Lloyd Bridges which turned out to be very popular. In 1953, Grace appeared in only one film, but it was another popular one. The film was Mogambo (1953) where Grace played Linda Nordley. The film was a jungle drama in which fellow cast members, Clark Gable and Ava Gardner turned in masterful performances. It was also one of the best films ever released by MGM. Although she got noticed with High Noon, her work with director Alfred Hitchcock, which began with Dial M for Murder (1954) made her a star. Her standout performance in Rear Window (1954) brought her to prominence. As Lisa Fremont, she was cast opposite James Stewart, who played a crippled photographer who witnesses a murder in the next apartment from his wheelchair. Grace stayed busy in 1954 appearing in five films. Grace would forever be immortalized by winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Georgie Elgin opposite Bing Crosby in The Country Girl (1954). In 1955, Grace once again teamed with Hitchcock in To Catch a Thief (1955) co-starring Cary Grant. In 1956, she played Tracy Lord in the musical comedy High Society (1956) which also starred Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. The whimsical tale ended with her re-marrying her former husband, played by Crosby. The film was well received. It also turned out to be her final acting performance. Grace had recently met and married Prince Rainier of the little principality of Monaco. By becoming a princess, she gave up her career. For the rest of her life, she was to remain in the news with her marriage and her three children. On September 14, 1982, Grace was killed in an automobile accident in her adoptive home country. Greta Garbo was born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson on September 18, 1905, in Stockholm, Sweden, to Anna Lovisa (Johansdotter), who worked at a jam factory, and Karl Alfred Gustafsson, a laborer. She was fourteen when her father died, which left the family destitute. Greta was forced to leave school and go to work in a department store. The store used her as a model in its newspaper ads. She had no film aspirations until she appeared in short advertising film at that same department store while she was still a teenager. Erik A. Petschler, a comedy director, saw the film and gave her a small part in his Luffar-Petter (1922). Encouraged by her own performance, she applied for and won a scholarship to a Swedish drama school. While there she appeared in at least one film, En lyckoriddare (1921). Both were small parts, but it was a start. Finally famed Swedish director Mauritz Stiller pulled her from the drama school for the lead role in The Saga of Gösta Berling (1924). At 18 Greta was on a roll.
Following The Joyless Street (1925) both Greta and Stiller were offered contracts with MGM, and her first film for the studio was the American-made Torrent (1926), a silent film in which she didn't have to speak a word of English. After a few more films, including The Temptress (1926), Love (1927) and A Woman of Affairs (1928), Greta starred in Anna Christie (1930) (her first "talkie"), which not only gave her a powerful screen presence but also garnered her an Academy Award nomination as Best Actress (she didn't win). Later that year she filmed Romance (1930), which was somewhat of a letdown, but she bounced back in 1931, landing another lead role in Mata Hari (1931), which turned out to be a major hit.
Greta continued to give intense performances in whatever was handed her. The next year she was cast in what turned out to be yet another hit, Grand Hotel (1932). However, it was in MGM's Anna Karenina (1935) that she gave what some consider the performance of her life. She was absolutely breathtaking in the role as a woman torn between two lovers and her son. Shortly afterwards, she starred in the historical drama Queen Christina (1933) playing the title character to great acclaim. She earned an Oscar nomination for her role in the romantic drama Camille (1936), again playing the title character. Her career suffered a setback the following year in Conquest (1937), which was a box office disaster. She later made a comeback when she starred in Ninotchka (1939), which showcased her comedic side. It wasn't until two years later she made what was to be her last film, Two-Faced Woman (1941), another comedy. But the film drew controversy and was condemned by the Catholic Church and other groups and was a box office failure, which left Garbo shaken.
After World War II Greta, by her own admission, felt that the world had changed perhaps forever and she retired, never again to face the camera. She would work for the rest of her life to perpetuate the Garbo mystique. Her films, she felt, had their proper place in history and would gain in value. She abandoned Hollywood and moved to New York City. She would jet-set with some of the world's best-known personalities such as Aristotle Onassis and others. She spent time gardening and raising flowers and vegetables. In 1954 Greta was given a special Oscar for past unforgettable performances. She even penned her biography in 1990.
On April 15, 1990, Greta died of natural causes in New York and with her went the "Garbo Mystique". She was 84.A true Hollywood great, first became a sensation during the silent era. A couple of years later, Smithers was interviewed by Newsweek reporter David Moberg for a story about typical American teenagers in the 1960s. She was photographed happily riding on the back of a friend's motorcycle by Julian Wasser. That carefree looking shot made the cover of the March 21, 1966 issue of the magazine. The shot led to work in commercials while she was continuing her art studies at California Institute of the Arts in Valencia.

Massachusetts-born Jean Rogers had hoped to study art in New York and Europe upon graduation from high school, but her plans changed when she won a national beauty contest in 1933 and was offered a contract by a Hollywood producer. She was soon signed by Warner Bros., and a year later jumped ship to Universal. She began appearing in several of the studios' serials, with 1936's "Flash Gordon" being her most fondly remembered role. Given her delicate blond beauty and the skimpy outfits she wore, it was no wonder she was lusted after so fiercely by archvillain Ming the Merciless (and most of the male audience). Universal took her out of the serial unit and put her in a string of B pictures. Unsatisfied with the way her career was going, and the fact that the studio refused to give her a raise, she left Universal for 20th Century Fox in 1939. Two years later the spunky Rogers left Fox for the same reasons she left Universal, and signed with MGM, where she found the treatment more to her liking. She walked off the Culver City lot in 1943 when studio boss Louis B. Mayer discovered that she planned to get married, and forbade her to do so. Joanna Cameron (born Patricia Kara Cameron) was an American actress and model, whose relatively brief acting career lasted from 1969 to 1980. She is primarily remembered for portraying the superheroine Isis/Andrea Thomas in the short-lived series "The Secrets of Isis" (1975-1976). Her character was depicted as a distant descendant of the Pharaoh Hatshepsut (15th century BC). An amulet that once belonged to her ancestor bestowed on Andrea elemental powers, and turned her into a representative of the goddess Isis (from which the powers derived). The series lasted for 2 seasons, and a total of 22 episodes. Cameron also portrayed Isis in three guest appearances in the superhero series "Shazam!"(1974-1976).
Cameron attended college during the late 1960s. She befriended fellow college student Linda Hope, a daughter of the comedian Bob Hope (1903-2003). Linda introduced Cameron to her father. Bob decided to cast Cameron in the role of the main character Nancy Benson in the comedy film "How to Commit Marriage" (1969). In the film, Nancy is a 19-year-old music student who is impregnated by her boyfriend. She plans to give birth and then offer the child for adoption, while her parents conspire to adopt their grandchild without informing Nancy of its fate. This film was Cameron's film debut.
Cameron was subsequently cast as a female student in the black comedy film "Pretty Maids All in a Row" (1971). In the film, high school football coach and guidance counselor Michael "Tiger" McDrew (played by Rock Hudson) systematically seduces female students, and has flings with them. The girls are unaware that Tiger is secretly a serial killer, and that he is responsible for killing several young girls. This was the only feature film scripted by the famed television writer Gene Roddenberry.
Cameron ceased making film appearances by 1971, but she had already started being cast in guest star roles in various television series. She had a recurring role as Nurse Anne MacAndrews in the medical drama "Marcus Welby, M.D.". She also depicted an unrelated one-shot character in the same series. Cameron was a relatively familiar face to television viewers by the time she gained the lead role in "The Secrets of Isis".
Following the end of her series, Cameron resumed making guest appearances in various television series. Her most notable role in this period was playing the young journalist Gale Hoffman in the first two episodes of the superhero series "The Amazing Spider-Man" (1977-1979). Her character was determined to get an interview from the mysterious Spider-Man. Gale was unaware that Spidey was her work colleague, Peter Parker. She and Peter even traveled together on an assignment by J. Jonah Jameson.

Svelte and stunning Texas-born Karen Sharpe was put into ballet shoes as a youngster. Her initial excursion to California was, at age 12, with the interest of becoming a professional ice skater, but the lure of being a movie star intervened. Her training as a teenager in the theater paid off and, in 1952, she appeared in Stanley Kramer's production of The Sniper (1952), directed by Edward Dmytryk. Her role consisted solely of three lines delivered while sitting on a drugstore stool and ordering a cherry phosphate. Although she did not personally meet Kramer at the time, it would be a foreshadowing of a future lifelong relationship.
In her salad days, she paid the rent and more as a billboard model and also graced such popular magazine covers as "Cosmopolitan" and "Pageant." On film, MGM featured her as Janice Rule's kid sister in Holiday for Sinners (1952), opposite William Campbell. Campbell went on to appear with her in other films as well, and they were paired as husband and wife in the Stagecoach West (1960) episode, Never Walk Alone (1961), in 1961. Producer Hal Roach gave her a break by featuring her in the popular "White Rain" commercials, where she danced her way to fame across the tops of rows of shampoo bottles, and he also chose her to represent his studio as Modern Screen Magazine's Golden Key Award winner as 1952's "Star of Tomorrow". Columbia Pictures picked up on this recognition and placed her in the Hugo Haas melodrama, Strange Fascination (1952). Monogram Pictures offered her a starring role in Army Bound (1952), which led to her being cast in Walter Mirisch's cult programmer, Bomba and the Jungle Girl (1952), with Johnny Sheffield (who played "Boy" in the Tarzan series) playing Bomba to Karen's lovely "Jungle Girl". The John Payne western The Vanquished (1953) followed, for Paramount Pictures. The film also starred Jan Sterling, who went on to appear with Karen in a couple of other major films and become a close friend and mentor, as well.
After filming the crime drama Mexican Manhunt (1953), starring George Brent, for Allied Artists, Karen received the biggest break of her young career. Director William A. Wellman cast her in the Wayne-Fellows-Warner Brothers epic airline disaster film, The High and the Mighty (1954). An all-star ensemble, it featured Karen as "Nell Buck", an amorous bride who allays her fears of certain death with the ecstasies of passion for new husband "Milo" (played by John Smith). Karen's standout performance garnered her the 1954 Golden Globe Award for "New Star of the Year". As a result, the film's star and producer, John Wayne, put her under contract to his new company, Batjac. Loaned out to Ida Lupino's company for Mad at the World (1955), Karen then co-starred in United Artists' Man with the Gun (1955) opposite Robert Mitchum. Cast in Batjac's Man in the Vault (1956), she went on loan again, this time for Columbia's war picture, Tarawa Beachhead (1958).
In the 1950s, against the concerns of the studios but with the encouragement of John Wayne, who advised her to "do anything and everything you can to grow as an artist", Karen made herself available for television. Taking Wayne's advice to heart, she found a creative and demanding outlet performing in "live" drama, with roles on Hallmark Hall of Fame (1951), General Electric Theater (1953), Climax! (1954), Matinee Theatre (1955), Playhouse 90 (1956) and Lux Playhouse (1958), among others. She also appeared in episodes of such classic TV shows as The Loretta Young Show (1953), Gunsmoke (1955), Perry Mason (1957), Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse (1958), 77 Sunset Strip (1958), Bonanza (1959), The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1964) and The Wild Wild West (1965). Karen went on to co-star in Aaron Spelling's very first television series, Johnny Ringo (1959).
Following a hiatus from Hollywood, while straightening out family estate matters, Karen was cast in the pilot for I Dream of Jeannie (1965) as Larry Hagman's fiancé and Jeannie's attractive nemesis. While waiting for the pilot to be sold (which, of course, it did), Jerry Lewis signed her to play opposite him in Paramount's The Disorderly Orderly (1964) as lovesick nurse "Julie Blair", who wins Jerry's affections in the end. It was during that filming that she met Stanley Kramer, who was directing Ship of Fools (1965) at the same time on the Paramount lot. Karen's focus was on her career, however, and a year went by before they actually started dating in January of 1966. After a relatively brief courtship, they married on September 1, 1966, following her completion of the Universal pilot, Valley of Mystery (1967).
Choosing to close the chapter on her acting career, Karen opened a new and rewarding one as full-time wife, mother (of two), and assistant to her husband. With the creation of KNK Productions, Inc., Karen established herself as a producer. Among her many successful projects is a remake of her husband's western classic High Noon (2000), as well as the prospective "Defiant One," a documentary examining Kramer's prolific career, and "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World," a big-screen sequel to his It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (1963). Kramer passed away on February 19, 2001. Since then, the ever-busy and vivacious Karen has maintained the Stanley Kramer Library. In addition, she also established the Stanley Kramer Award at the Producer's Guild, and the Stanley Kramer Fellowship Award in Directing at UCLA in 2001. Both of these awards honor socially conscious young filmmakers.Beautiful actress appeared in "The High and The Mighty" with John Wayne, and would be under contract with his production company in the mid 50s. - Although Lani O'Grady retired from acting in the '80s to become a talent agent like her mother, she had long secured her place in the TV Land pantheon as Mary, the brainiac wannabe doctor in Eight Is Enough (1977)'s expansive Bradford brood. The dramedy, starring Dick Van Patten as a newspaper columnist and superdad, ran on ABC from 1977-1981. In addition to her four-year stint on the show and two late-'80s reunion specials, O'Grady racked up appearances on such other '70s tube staples as The Love Boat (1977), as well as TV movies like The Kid with the Broken Halo (1982), before leaving Hollywood.
She had been dogged by health and pill problems dating back to her Mary Bradford days. In a series of interviews in the 1990s, she admitted to having suffered panic attacks for the previous 20 years. Scores of doctors misdiagnosed her; to cope with the frequent anxiety episodes--sometimes she'd shake so badly she couldn't leave her dressing room to shoot a scene--she was fed a veritable pharmacy: Xanax, Valium and Librium. She became hooked on the pills and, eventually, alcohol, too. She went into rehab at least five times. By the mid-'90s she declared herself clean, thanks to an alternative-medicine regimen, and even went to work for her doctor as a recovery counselor. However, in 1998 she checked herself into the mental health ward of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles for detox. She had become hooked on a prescription drug called Ativan. While in Cedars she claimed she was sexually battered by a medical technician and sued the hospital. The suit was pending at the time of her death.
O'Grady came from a show-biz family. Her brother, Don Grady, was an original Mouseketeer and member of another notable TV family--he played Robbie on My Three Sons (1960). Her mother, Mary Grady, was an agent who represented several child actors. Born Lanita Rose Agrati on October 2, 1954, she changed her name once she landed her "Eight Is Enough" gig. Her first professional role came at the age of 13, when she made a brief appearance in the TV western The High Chaparral (1967). She died on September 25, 2001, at her home in Valencia, CA, just a week shy of her 47th birthday.Best known as the brainy sister Mary in "Eight is Enough". Gorgeous, well-endowed singer/actress Laura Devon arrived in Tinseltown during the early 1960s, but gave notice less than a decade later and retired permanently after her fourth marriage. She made only five films. Laura was categorized as one of those beautiful bouffant blondes of film and TV who were usually cast as diverting set decoration -- the equally blonde lovelies Sharon Tate, Yvette Mimieux and Dorothy Provine, come first to mind.
She was born Mary Lou Briley in Chicago, Illinois, on May 23, 1931, the daughter of Merrill Devon, an auto engineer of Swedish, Scottish and Irish descent, and a mother of Dutch heritage. Her family later moved to Grosse Point, Michigan, where she attended University High School. Her interest in singing came at a fairly young age and, by her early teens, was performing. Graduating from the University of Michigan where she majored in journalism and political science, she began acting on stage in such musicals as "The Boyfriend" at the Vanguard Playhouse in Detroit.
In 1961, Laura was spotted singing at a Detroit night club by a 20th Century-Fox talent agent and given a screen test. Universal also took an interest in her photogenic beauty and signed her instead. Laura's first year under contract involved intensive study in acting, singing and dance before she even started making the rounds on TV. Eventually, she appeared in such popular programs as Route 66 (1960) and The Twilight Zone (1959), her big break coming when she and another budding actress, June Harding, were hired as ensemble cast members on The Richard Boone Show (1963), an anthology TV series also featuring veterans Boone, Warren Stevens, Jeanette Nolan, Harry Morgan, Robert Blake, Guy Stockwell, Bethel Leslie and Ford Rainey.
Falling easily into the Hollywood scene, Laura had dated handsome actor Brian Kelly back in Detroit (his native city). Their romance ended when he went to Hollywood but rekindled again when she, too, made it to Hollywood in 1961. They married a year later, and the good-looking couple became a part of the "in crowd" while moving up the acting ladder. A couple of months after their June wedding, they appeared together in Lillian Hellman's steamy drama "Toys in the Attic" at the Laguna Beach Summer Theater.
Laura made her film debut as a second female lead in the Tony Curtis/Debbie Reynolds gender-bending romp Goodbye Charlie (1964). Laura figured prominently in all the sexual hijinks happening in the taunting George Axelrod script, but the film was considered a misfire. Laura then got hot and heavy in Red Line 7000 (1965), one of Howard Hawks later and lesser efforts. Again, Laura (and the other ladies, for that matter) provided diverting distraction from the stock car racing sequences.
Still moving up the ranks, she was prominently displayed on Bonanza (1959), The Rogues (1964), Rawhide (1959), I Spy (1965), The Big Valley (1965) and enjoyed a recurring role on Dr. Kildare (1961). Her last three films were the horror opus Chamber of Horrors (1966), which had Patrick O'Neal stirring up some demented antics as a serial strangler. Again, not hired for her character's brilliance, Laura does manage the classic one liner, "What am I thinking? He is the easiest man in the world to identify. He only has one hand!" The next film involved her with handsome George Maharis and another strangling in the so-so melodrama A Covenant with Death (1967). Her final film was probably the best received. With Craig Stevens taking his popular Peter Gunn gumshoe character from TV to feature length film, the atmospheric detective story Gunn (1967) had, at the very least, a built-in audience. The singing aspect of Laura also managed to show itself here. She recorded two of Henry Mancini's songs from the movie, "I Like the Look" and "Dreamsville".
By this time, Laura's first marriage had dissolved. Husband Brian had become a TV star via his Porter Ricks character on the dolphin show Flipper (1964). Within a year of their divorce, Laura married renowned French film composer Maurice Jarre, hailed for his Oscar-winning scores in Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Doctor Zhivago (1965) and A Passage to India (1984). Laura immediately retired and never looked back. She and Jarre divorced in 1984. Little was heard from Laura until notice of her 2007 death at her Beverly Hills residence at age 76. She is survived by her screenwriting son Kevin Jarre.Beautiful blonde actress and singer. Started out as a singer, until spotted by a talent agent. She has an older brother, Richard and a younger sister, Marilyn. As a dramatic major in college, she made a college trip to New York where a chance encounter with a soap opera producer led to an audition the following summer (after graduation), and a place at the Williamtown summer theatre. That led to a scholarship at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. Spotted by a Universal talent scout, she signed a contract and arrived in Hollywood in 1972.Another BSG actress, Beautiful blonde with sprakling blue eyes, career spanned 1973-1984, ended it at age 33 after marrying soap actor John McCook. She did a detergent commercial in the late '80s or early '90s, I thought she was getting ready for a comeback.
- The Tennessee-born Snowden (real name: Martha Lee Estes) was a movie actress and model who first made a splash on the Jack Benny TV show, sashaying across the stage at the San Diego Naval base. Twenty thousand sailors gave the curvy sweater-clad starlet a standing ovation that made headlines in "Variety", and every talent scout in Hollywood was on Snowden's trail the very next morning. Three days later, she was hired to make her film debut in director Robert Aldrich's obtuse crime classic Kiss Me Deadly (1955) (Aldrich expanded her role and gave her featured billing). In January 1955, she signed a seven-year contract with Universal Studios, beginning by playing up her Dixie drawl in their glossy soap opera All That Heaven Allows (1955). Other movies include Francis in the Navy (1955), The Creature Walks Among Us (1956) and the Bridey Murphy-inspired I've Lived Before (1956). In September 1956, Snowden married Dick Contino, a big-name singer/accordion player, and a few years later she retired from acting. Was selected in 1946 by the International Mathematics Society as 'the girl with the most beautiful figure'. I thought she looked prettier than Rita Hayworth in 'Cover Girl'. Career spanned 1941 to 1948 retired at age 26. Although she has credit for 1971.- Pretty, spunky, and talented blonde Linda Haynes was born on November 4, 1947 in Florida. Haynes made her film debut as Dr. Anne Barton in the silly Japanse sci-fi monster flick Latitude Zero (1969). Linda was excellent as brassy prostitute Meg in Jack Hill's terrifically trashy blaxploitation cult favorite Coffy (1973) and was likewise fine as small-time L.A. mobster Jason Miller's girlfriend Sarah in the downbeat crime drama The Nickel Ride (1974). Haynes gave her best, most gritty, and impressive performance to date as tough and world-weary barmaid and war hero groupie Linda Forchet, who befriends traumatized Vietnam veteran William Devane in the outstanding revenge thriller winner Rolling Thunder (1977). Linda had her sole starring role as country singer Rachel Foster in the sleazy women-in-prison exploitation outing Human Experiments (1979). Alas, following her appearances in both the prison drama Brubaker (1980) and the acclaimed made-for-TV feature Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones (1980), Haynes called it a day as an actress and went on to work as a legal assistant in a law firm in Florida.Beautiful blonde actress who appeared in a lot of B movies in the '70s career spanned 1969-1980, apparently got tired of Hollywood and left the biz at age 33, moved to Florida and became a legal secretary.
- Pert, blonde Linda Gaye Scott enlivened a few iconic 60s and 70s sci-fi shows and movies. She had a particularly good line in exotic characters and is well remembered as Moth, a feisty sidekick of Frank Gorshin's Riddler in two episodes of Batman (1966), silver-clad alien Vama in The Green Hornet (1966) and -- topping the weirdness scale-- an alien space hippie (!) in Lost in Space (1965). On the big screen, she was Arlette, the robot prostitute who seduces Richard Benjamin in the classic futuristic thriller Westworld (1973).
Linda was born in L.A., the daughter of advertising man Milton Bradley Scott and his wife, Jeanne Juliet Otto. Otto's mother was veteran Hollywood character actress Martha Wentworth, who, in the 40s, was known as the 'Woman of a Hundred Voices'. Linda was raised in the Bel-Air neighbourhood of Los Angeles, situated in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains. The family later moved to Encino in San Fernando Valley and then to Coldwater Canyon, near downtown Beverly Hills. She attended Emerson Junior High School in West Los Angeles.
On screen from 1961, Linda made regular guest appearances on television until her retirement from acting 22 years later. Now devoted to philanthropic pursuits, she has set up a rescue and adoption facility to care for homeless and abused animals.Buxom attractive blonde, used mostly as eye candy in the 60's and '70s because of her attributes (Big bust). Striking brunette Lori Saunders managed to capitalize on her sunny, daisy-fresh appeal during CBS-TV's famous 1960s "rural age," an era in which the network churned out a connected trio of bucolic hit shows -- The Beverly Hillbillies (1962), Petticoat Junction (1963) and Green Acres (1965). As the studious, slightly ditzy middle daughter, "Bobbie Jo Bradley," on the second show, her character would occasionally "visit" the other two shows. Once Petticoat Junction (1963) was canceled in 1970, Lori crossed over to The Beverly Hillbillies (1962) set, with a recurring part as Mr. Drysdale's secretary, Elizabeth "Betty" Gordon, in its very last season (1970-1971).
Born Linda Marie Hines on October 4, 1941, in Kansas City, Missouri, Lori studied for a time under acting coach Jeff Corey. Her professional career began at age 19, in 1960, with multiple episodes of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet (1952). She then dropped her real name in favor of the stage moniker, "Linda Saunders," and became a popular presence, pitching well over 100 commercial products on TV. She also earned a few "pretty girl" film parts, in such minor fare as The Girls on the Beach (1965), Mara of the Wilderness (1965), and the horror opus, Blood Bath (1966).
Finding occasional work on such established series as Burke's Law (1963), Lori finally hit pay dirt in 1965 when she was brought in to replace actress Pat Woodell on Petticoat Junction (1963) as one of the gorgeous Bradley daughters, when Woodell decided to leave to pursue a singing career. Lori changed her marquee name for the final time, in order to avoid confusion with the other "Linda" on the show -- Linda Henning. During the "Petticoat" run, Lori, Linda and Meredith MacRae had a brief career as a singing trio in which they billed themselves as "The Girls from Petticoat Junction." The trio occasionally sang on the show (as the "Hooterville Honeys"), and one available CD contains original songs ("If You Could Only Be Me," "Thirty Days Hath September") as well as established hits from other artists ("Up, Up and Away"). The girls booked a string of nightclubs and fairs, and also made a singing appearance on Johnny Carson's late night show.
Following her TV peak, Lori continued to find acting work elsewhere, on such shows as Daniel Boone (1964) and The Courtship of Eddie's Father (1969), as well as an occasional TV pilot. She played sweet "Betsy McGuire" for 26 episodes on yet another countrified show, Dusty's Trail (1973), that co-starred Gilligan's Island (1964) star Bob Denver and F Troop (1965) star Forrest Tucker. By coincidence, the other female co-star on that series was none other than blonde Jeannine Riley, who played daughter "Billie Jo Bradley" on Petticoat Junction (1963), but deboarded the Cannonball just as Lori was boarding it in 1965.
An attempt to shake up her wholesome image with leading roles in minor film fare did not pan out. Head On (1971), A Day at the White House (1972), Frasier, the Sensuous Lion (1973) and the slasher film, So Sad About Gloria (1973), in which Lori played a former mental patient tormented by visions of ax murders, did little to advance her career. Lori eventually retired from acting, following her appearance in the low-budget sci-fi film, Captive (1980), co-starring Cameron Mitchell and David Ladd.
Married since 1961 to Bernard Sandler, who is retired as owner and agent of his Commercial Talent Agency, and living in Southern California, the couple have two children, Ronald Sandler and Stacy Sandler. Lori's long-time creative focus has been on photography, sculpture and painting. She is also a vegan and an avid outdoors person. She is into spiritual meditation and is involved in many charities as an advocate for child and animal rights.Very pretty brunette, played the middle sister from "Petticoat Junction", career spanned 1960-1980. Mary Louise Brooks, also known by her childhood name of Brooksie, was born in the Midwestern town of Cherryvale, Kansas, on November 14, 1906. She began dancing at an early age with the Denishawn Dancers (which was how she left Kansas and went to New York) and then with George White's Scandals before joining the Ziegfeld Follies, but became one of the most fascinating and alluring personalities ever to grace the silver screen. She was always compared to her Lulu role in Pandora's Box (1929), which was filmed in 1928. Her performances in A Girl in Every Port (1928) and Beggars of Life (1928), both filmed in 1928, proved to all concerned that Louise had real talent. She became known, mostly, for her bobbed hair style. Thousands of women were attracted to that style and adopted it as their own. As you will note by her photographs, she was no doubt the trend setter of the 1920s with her Buster Brown-Page Boy type hair cut, much like today's women imitate stars. Because of her dark haired look and being the beautiful woman that she was, plus being a modern female, she was not especially popular among Hollywood's clientele. She just did not go along with the norms of the film society. Louise really came into her own when she left Hollywood for Europe. There she appeared in a few German productions which were very well made and continued to prove she was an actress with an enduring talent. Until she ended her career in film in 1938, she had made only 25 movies. After that, she spent most of her time reading and painting. She also became an accomplished writer, authoring a number of books, including her autobiography. On August 8, 1985, Louise died of a heart attack in Rochester, New York. She was 78 years old.Beautiful silent movie star, with her bob hairstyle the embodiment of the 1920s flapper girl. Had more success in Europe than in the Hollywood. Did only a few Sound movies. - Maggie McNamara -- with her brown hair in a ponytail -- arrives in Rome in Three Coins in the Fountain (1954) expecting great things to happen. Petite and slender, she looks almost like a schoolgirl in her prim blue suit. She is bright and vivacious and goes for what she wants -- a proposal from "Prince Dino De Cessi" played by Louis Jourdan. She was in her mid-20s, then, and at the height of her career as she made her second film. One of four children of Irish-American parents, Maggie had come a long way since attending Textile High in New York to prepare for a modeling career. Pert as well as petite, she must have reminded people of the young Debbie Reynolds. Both had a look that was popular in the late 1940s. Maggie's picture appeared twice on the cover of Life Magazine and people were saying she too ought to be in movies. She started taking lessons with a dramatic coach and, at the age of 23, she was discovered by Otto Preminger. He signed her to play the role of a proper young lady who lets herself be lured to a bachelor's apartment in the Chicago production of a play of F. Hugh Herbert. She played the ingénue role in "The Moon Is Blue" in the national company for 18 months. Then, in 1951, she made it to Broadway in "The King of Friday's Men". Brooks Atkinson, drama critic for the New York Times, said of her performance in that play that she was "remarkably pretty and has a gift for acting". Then Maggie was offered the female lead in the Otto Preminger's film version of The Moon Is Blue (1953) with William Holden and David Niven. Theater patrons in New York and Chicago had found the stage version of the story amusing. The Catholic Legion of Decency was not amused when it previewed the film. It was stamped "C" for Condemned. The New York Times noted in 1978: "The Moon Is Blue aroused a storm of controversy because of what some observers regarded as 'indecent' discussion of sex, and the ridicule of the rules of parental protection. By current standards, it was, in fact, a prim and proper work". Maggie was supporting herself as a typist when she died in 1978. The New York Times obituary appeared four weeks after her death. It said she was 48. The relative who confirmed that she had died did not give the newspaper the date of her birth. The relative said Maggie had been doing some writing recently and a film script, "The Mighty Dandelion", had been accepted by a new film producing company. In the era when ingénue roles were the big thing, this actress was thriving. Her reason for leaving acting is sketchy, one reason is that she hated the old studio system, but why didn't she just returned to the stage? The great director Otto Preminger said that he believed that Miss McNamara had emotional problems after her divorce and she just couldn't cope that's why she retired. Her career spanned 1949-1964 retired at age 35, committed suicide in 1978 at age 48

Maren Jensen was born in Glendale, California, USA on September 23, 1956. She attended Herbert Hoover High School from 1971 to 1974, and after graduating, received a scholarship to attend UCLA. The actress majored in theatre arts during her three years at UCLA. She appeared in several college productions, but admits, "I did absolutely nothing professional, not even the California equivalent of off-off-off-Broadway". She did, however, begin a successful modeling career, which included Cosmopolitan and Seventeen magazine covers. When a mutual friend introduced her to agent Barbara Gale, she was surprised by the agent's obvious enthusiasm. She was even more surprised when Ms. Gale started sending her on calls that resulted in two network commercials and a guest shot on The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries (1977). But even more startling, she recalls, was being signed for a stellar role in Battlestar Galactica (1978). Maren appeared in Wes Craven's 1981 horror film, Deadly Blessing (1981), and in the movie, Beyond the Reef (1979). Maren appeared with ABC teammates, Richard Hatch, Joyce DeWitt, Robin Williams, Debby Boone, Billy Crystal, Robert Urich and captain Gabe Kaplan on Battle of the Network Stars V (1978), alongside Sharon Stone. Ms. Jensen comes from a "totally non-theatrical" family. Her father is a physician and her mother is a membership secretary with the Los Angeles Zoo. She is a middle child, with a brother Dana, who is five years older, and a sister, Kathleen, who is seven years younger. Ms. Jensen is single -- and plans to keep it that way, for at least a while -- as her career moves rapidly forward. Her hobbies are "almost all musical", including singing and playing piano. Her career was cut short by illness, after she got Epstein-Barr Syndrome. Maren was a longtime companion of singer-songwriter Don Henley and in 1982, Henley released his first solo album, "Building the Perfect Beast". She appeared in the video for Henley's song, "Not Enough Love In the World", in 1985. Henley and Maren Jensen were engaged, but separated in 1986. Jensen helped Henley found The Walden Woods Project in the early 1990s, an organization dedicated to protecting the Walden Woods in Massachusetts from development. Maren Jensen (now Maren Kugelberg) is married to Johan Kugelberg. They have a daughter and live in New York City. Johan Kugelberg curates the Boo-Hooray art gallery in Manhattan.Very beautiful brunette Actress and model, Battle Star Galactica star, career spanned 1977-1981, her career stalled because of the debilitating effect of Epstein-Barr syndrome and a tumultuous relationship with Don Henley of the Eagles. Merry Anders practically grew up in local bijous watching films and their accompanying stage shows with her movie-crazy mother and grandmother. The family relocated to Los Angeles in 1949 and, while attending John Burroughs Junior High School, Anders made the acquaintance of Rita La Roy, an old-time film actress who convinced her to take a modeling course. Later, to help her with her modeling, she took dramatic lessons at the Ben Bard Playhouse and was "spotted" by a 20th Century-Fox talent scout in a Playhouse stage presentation. After several years at Fox, Anders turned freelancer, working in TV as well as starring in a string of modestly budgeted Western, science fiction and horror films.Beautiful blonde actress did mostly episodic TV and B movies for producers affiliated with FOX. At the age of 17, only two months out of high school in Phoenix, Arizona, Michelle was signed up by director Stanley Donen for a supporting actress role with Michael Caine in the movie comedy, Blame It on Rio (1984). A tall, slender beauty, Michelle had finished high school one semester early, and she was preparing to move to New York City to begin her modeling career when Mr. Donen spotted a small photo of her in the fashion magazine, "W." Michelle has appeared in many movies, including Waxwork (1988), Genuine Risk (1990) and Far and Away (1992). Her television credits include several appearances on The Love Boat (1977), as well as Murder, She Wrote (1984), Melrose Place (1992), Dallas (1978), Charles in Charge (1984) and The Outer Limits (1995). (Her stepfather is a clinical psychologist and her mother is a homemaker).Made quite an impression in her film debut as a teen trying to seduce Michael Caine in Blame it on Rio. She outshone (outshined?) an equally fresh Demi Moore, then became a regular in The Love Boat briefly. She was an "It" girl for a while, she appeared in a lot of things but mostly mediocre films. Her acting was also mediocre and never improved, which is why she never moved on to bigger and better things. Career spanned 1984 to 2004, retired at age 39
