- DirectorGavin O'ConnorStarsTom HardyNick NolteJoel EdgertonThe youngest son of an alcoholic former boxer returns home, where he's trained by his father for competition in a mixed martial arts tournament - a path that puts the fighter on a collision course with his estranged, older brother. This movie blew me away! any movie that can have every straight man in the theater crying has to be powerful and this movie is. This is not a just a guy flick or a chick flick this is a people flick, a masterful story of a dysfunctional family and the hurt and anger shared between two brothers who by circumstance meet each other in the ring. Story, script, acting, everything is a A plus, this film should at the least receive Oscar nominations for Director, Producer, and Nick Nolte for best supporting actor. This a must see 5 out of 5.
- DirectorTom HooperStarsColin FirthGeoffrey RushHelena Bonham CarterThe story of King George VI, his unexpected ascension to the throne of the British Empire in 1936, and the speech therapist who helped the unsure monarch overcome his stammer.I did not know this piece of history and I found it very interesting and Colin Firth was fantastic. Its very funny and touching and I think almost anyone could identify with Firth's character. 5 out of 5
- DirectorJames MangoldStarsRussell CroweChristian BaleBen FosterA small-time rancher agrees to hold a captured outlaw who's awaiting a train to go to court in Yuma. A battle of wills ensues as the outlaw tries to psych out the rancher. This is an excellent remake of the original. Great cast, good story, the HD DVD is great. I'm picky about westerns and this one is way above the rest of any in recent years. 4 out 5
- DirectorSean PennStarsEmile HirschVince VaughnCatherine KeenerAfter graduating from Emory University, top student and athlete Christopher McCandless abandons his possessions, gives his entire $24,000 savings account to charity and hitchhikes to Alaska to live in the wilderness. Along the way, Christopher encounters a series of characters that shape his life. This is the tragic, true story of a young mans journey into the wilds of Alaska. We are all searching for something and I think anyone can identify with the main characters quest. It's well acted and very sad, but its worth it. This movie stayed with me for a long time after I saw it, its very haunting. 4 out of 5
- DirectorJudd ApatowStarsSteve CarellCatherine KeenerPaul RuddGoaded by his buddies, a nerdy guy who's never "done the deed" only finds the pressure mounting when he meets a single mother.I'm not a huge Steve Carroll fan but his movie with its great supporting cast is drop dead funny.
- DirectorDavid MirkinStarsSigourney WeaverJennifer Love HewittGene HackmanA mother and daughter con team seduce and scam wealthy men.I love this movie! it is funny funny funny. A real sleeper at the time it came out (right around 9/11) the one liners and slapstick situations are priceless. A great cast including Sigorney Weaver, Anne Bancroft, Ray Liotta and Gene Hackman. 4 out of 5
- DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsJulia RobertsAlbert FinneyDavid BrisbinAn unemployed single mother becomes a legal assistant and almost single-handedly brings down a California power company accused of polluting a city's water supply. This is Julia Robert's best movie and best performance ever, I wish she would step out of her box more as she did here. When you forget your watching Julia Roberts you know its a good performance, winning her the best actress oscar that year. This is another 5 out 5 film good for any viewer.
- DirectorDel ShoresStarsDelta BurkeBonnie BedeliaOlivia Newton-JohnAs three generations of a family in a small Texas town gather for a funeral, we learn the hilarious, sad, trashy truth of their "Sordid Lives."This is cult classic at it's finest, trust me
- DirectorDavid MirkinStarsMira SorvinoLisa KudrowJaneane GarofaloTwo dim-witted, inseparable friends hit the road for their ten-year high school reunion and concoct an elaborate lie about their lives in order to impress their classmates.I love this movie, great 80's music, great cast and the script is so funny. Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino have great chemistry and the supporting cast is good as well. A fun Sunday afternoon movie. 4 out of 5
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroSharon StoneJoe PesciIn Las Vegas, two best friends - a casino executive and a mafia enforcer - compete for a gambling empire and a fast-living, fast-loving socialite. This movie rocks from start to finish. Watch it uncut on HD DVD on a big screen because it's that kind of movie, this is a 5 out of 5 stars.
- DirectorJohn WatersStarsSonny BonoRuth BrownDivineA 'pleasantly plump' teenager teaches 1962 Baltimore a thing or two about integration after landing a spot on a local TV dance show.Forget the John Travolta version, the original John Waters masterpiece is one of the funniest films I have ever seen. Great music, great performances and camp out the wazzoo. I've seen it at least a 100 times and never get tired of it. 5 out of 5
- DirectorBob FosseStarsMariel HemingwayEric RobertsCliff RobertsonA successful young model finds trouble when her obsessive manager-turned-husband becomes dangerously jealous. This dark bio pic stars Mariel Hemingway as the tragic Playboy Playmate Dorothy Stratton who was brutally murdered by her psycho estranged husband Paul Snider played by Eric Roberts in what I feel is his best performance. Roberts puts the slimy creep into slimy creep. This is a really good movie and a deserved tribute to a young women cut down just as her movie career was beginning. 4 out of 5
- DirectorMichael CrichtonStarsAlbert FinneyJames CoburnSusan DeyThree of four models, who had plastic surgery done by Larry after a computed list, are dead. Neither the cops nor Larry believe they're suicides. Larry investigates and stays with the fourth model. Who's behind the lists and murders? This is a very interesting film because all of the technology featured in the film has now come to pass. This was a sleeper at the time it was released, I think because it was to technical for most people to get their brains around, if you like old sci fi this is a good one, the dvd transfer is very good looks like new.
- DirectorJonathan KaplanStarsMatt DillonMichael Eric KramerPamela LudwigA group of bored teenagers rebel against authority in the community of New Granada after the death of one of their own. This was Matt Dillons first film (at 16). His charisma already established. This is a very interesting film in the sense that the events seemed so unlikely back in 1979, now they seem tame. The best thing about this film is that the kids are played by real kids, not 20 somethings trying to look like teenagers. If you were a teen during this time the music (great soundtrack) the fashion and the partying will bring back the memories. A foreshadowing of the violence that would come to pass only a few years later.
- DirectorIrvin KershnerStarsFaye DunawayTommy Lee JonesBrad DourifA famous fashion photographer develops a disturbing ability to see through the eyes of a killer. This is a very good thriller, starring Faye Dunaway (pre Mommie Dearest) as a hot NYC Fashion Photog who begins to have visions of sadistic murders blinding her to her actual surroundings. Great supporting cast and soundtrack, NYC at its late 70's best. 4 out of 5
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsDonald PleasenceJamie Lee CurtisTony MoranFifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again. The only Halloween you should ever watch in your entire life is the 1978 original John Carpenter masterpiece. The rest of the franchise is crap, dont waste your time, watch this and only this. 5 our ot 5
- DirectorRichard AttenboroughStarsAnthony HopkinsAnn-MargretBurgess MeredithA ventriloquist is at the mercy of his vicious dummy while he tries to renew a romance with his high school sweetheart. Before Anthony Hopkins freaked out the world in "Silence of the Lambs" he was freakin in this horror film. Hopkins is one scary man and this film is no different, if you have not seen it check it out, the dummy (puppet) is so creepy.
- DirectorMeir ZarchiStarsCamille KeatonEron TaborRichard PaceAn aspiring writer is repeatedly assaulted, humiliated, and left for dead by four men she systematically hunts down to seek revenge. This is one of the most controversial movies ever made. It is not easy to watch but it is probably one of the most shockingly real revenge movies I've ever seen.
- DirectorLamont JohnsonStarsMargaux HemingwayChris SarandonPerry KingA top fashion model seeks justice after she is brutally raped by her teenage sister's music teacher. This is a film you have to see. Unfortunately our criminal justice system still treats rape victims like 3rd class citizens. This intense and disturbing film shows how a fashion model is violently raped in her own home by an aquaintance only to be further raped in the courts where the perps rights are protected while the victims is not. The rape scene in this film is shocking even by today's standards. It is brutal and sadistic, nothing is hidden from the camera. The performances are powerful and the subject matter very serious, a bit dated but still relevent today.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroJodie FosterCybill ShepherdA mentally unstable veteran works as a nighttime taxi driver in New York City, where the perceived decadence and sleaze fuels his urge for violent action. What can I say, it's R.D.'s tour de force performance as sociopath Travis Brickle, "You talkin to me"? Cybill Shepard is breathtaking and is excellent as R.D's object of affection. Jodie Foster as a teen hooker, more blood and violence then 10 films, its a masterpiece, now on HD w/s and worth mutiple viewings. 5 out of 5
- DirectorCharles B. PierceStarsBen JohnsonAndrew PrineDawn WellsThe story of a hooded, berserk killer who terrorized the border town of Texarkana, Arkansas in 1946--leaving no fewer than five murder victims in his wake. He was never caught. Based on one of America's most baffling murder cases. This movie will freak you out. It is so scary and the fact that it is a true story and that he was never caught makes it all the more creepy. I think the fact it is an old movie adds to the creep factor and the way this guy goes after his victims is very disturbing. This is one of those movies that will make you check behind the shower curtain and in every closet so make sure to watch it at night if you are type that likes a really good scare.
- DirectorJames FrawleyStarsJoseph BolognaStockard ChanningJohn BeckA nuclear powered bus driving cross-country, from New York City to Colorado, is destined for disaster due to the machinations of a mysterious group allied with the oil lobby. If you love the movie "Airplane" or any of the "Naked Gun" series this movie is for you. Released a couple of years before "Airplane" this is the exact same type of humor filled with 1970's stars. The premise is so stupid but hey that's what these movies are suppose to be, the DVD transfer is excellent. 3 out of 5
- DirectorJohn GuillerminStarsPaul NewmanSteve McQueenWilliam HoldenAt the opening party of a colossal, but poorly constructed, office building, a massive fire breaks out that threatens to destroy the tower and everyone in it.This is the best disaster movie ever made end of story. The new HD w/s DVD release is spectacular. Watch it on a big screen with a good surround sound system and remember there is no cgi in this film, just good old fashion reality. The fire is the star of this film and now in the post 9-11 world watching this film takes on a whole new meaning as this is probably as close a picture we will ever have of the horror the WTC victims endured. I found some parts hard to watch in leiu of this but this is the king of the genre and a must see 5 out of 5
- DirectorTobe HooperStarsMarilyn BurnsEdwin NealAllen DanzigerFive friends head out to rural Texas to visit the grave of a grandfather. On the way they stumble across what appears to be a deserted house, only to discover something sinister within. Something armed with a chainsaw. The original 1974 film, not the lame ass remake, in fact don't waste your time on any horror remake they all suck. This movie will scare the crap out of you, it is pure terror that you know goes on in this country all the time. This film does not rely on cheap gore to scare you, the mindblow it gives you is what is scary, it is still hard for me to watch some 35 years later.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroHarvey KeitelDavid ProvalIn New York City's Little Italy, a devoutly Catholic mobster must reconcile his desire for power, his feelings for his epileptic lover, and his devotion to his troublesome friend. This is rough, dirty, sleezy NYC of the early 70's and I love it. The cast is incredible and the realism of the film takes you back in time when NYC gleamed in the sleeze of the underworld. The entire cast is great, this is a masterpiece plain and simple. 5 out of 5
