Winslow is intrigued by both Bierce and Arroyo, and the men are in turn attracted to her. She becomes romantically involved with Arroyo. When Winslow learns of Bierce's true identity (a writer whose work she has loved and respected for years), she is singlemindedly determined to fulfill his dying wish.

One of the Villista soldiers (supporters of Pancho Villa), Nicolás, takes Lázara to be his woman and so she becomes part of their band. Lázara has to walk alongside Nicolás' horse whilst carrying his rifle and gun belt as they travel. One of the older "soldaderas" puts the gun belt on Lázara and shows her how to shoot. Although Lázara does not fight, she is present during moments of conflict and is involved in the looting of a town. But Lázara wishes for nothing more than a home.

Later, he gets into trouble for supplying horses to both the revolutionists and the federals and has to face the prospect of execution. Yet little did he know that previously through an act of kindness, he had saved the life of young Pancho Villa, formerly known as Doreteo Arango, which in turn gave Villa the same opportunity to spare Jesus' life. They later become great friends and Villa permits Jesus to carry on breeding horses providing he also works for him temporarily as his spy. Villa secretly plans to pair together his two most loyal spies: Jesus and the other spy who turns out to be Genoveva. They get married and shortly after Genoveva becomes pregnant. But one tragic event leads to more anguish.

Soon Aurelio is accused of the outcome of this fatality and is arrested by the town's commandant; a friend of the Don with his own grievances against Perez. Maria, an admirer of Perez sets out to help free him from his injustice. When her first plan is foiled, Maria takes matters into her own hands. She rescues Perez although only manages to improve the situation temporarily leaving the commandant hungry in his quest for revenge.

Beginning at the end of the Revolution, Villa is at an outside dance party in Parral, when reporter Llergo and the photographer Sosa arrive to interview him. The next day, Villa shows them around his hacienda, which the government has given him and introduces them to his family. He tells the two men about the key moments from his past which he feels have marked his life, starting from 1910 with the beginning of the Mexican Revolution. Villa talks about his career and pivotal moments in his life, as well as his achievements and his relationship with Madero, whom he respected and admired. As he talks of Madero and his assassination he cries with sadness before taking us back to his imprisonment, when Huerta planned to execute him. However, he describes how he is saved and a clerk at the prison helps him to escape. Five days after his escape from prison Villa flees to the US. The reporter reminds Villa of his success and the fact that he has been recognized as a great man and an important figure in the Revolution. Villa informs them about his glorious battles which he and his North Division endured and of the battle at Zacatecas where they avenged Madero. Later, they are convened to settle a dispute over some land which ends up in Villa having an argument with Melitón which sparks off his desire to organize Villa's assassination.

The latter's men get into a skirmish with Villa's forces, and, while they fight it out, Tom hides the silver. Denny deVargas, unknown to his family and to Tom, has joined forces with the outlaw Barrance and has promised to get the silver shipment for him. Denny is captured and imprisoned by Villa. Tom, in his effort to rescue the worthless Denney, is caught by Captain Morales, a Villa aide, who is conspiring against his leader. Morales frees Denny to continue his services for Barranca, and Tom is put in Denny's cell. Sentenced to a firing-squad death by Villa, Tom is released following an appeal by his mother. He is then captured by Barranca's men but is rescued through Tequila's efforts. Tom, who can't seem to avoid anybody, is then embroiled anew with attackers sent by Morales. Somehow, Tom saves the silver and rides to the waiting arms of Dolores de Vargas, his sweetheart.
