Phenomenal special effects add to the claustrophobic atmosphere. Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden and William Sadler's performances absolutely sold me. Plus, despite some negative feelings that have been flying around my house regarding the ending, I feel it was absolutely perfect. Not everything in life has a happy ending, nor should they in movies. The emotion evoked when David pulled the trigger, killing all of those he still knew and loved before attempting to turn the empty gun on himself only moments before the cavalry rolled in was absolutely devastating. Frank Darabont is a modern master of cinema and his direction of this film was absolutely reflective of that. 9/10

- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsJack NicholsonShelley DuvallDanny LloydA family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future.Okay, so bottom line, I know the vast majority of people who read this will hate me for it. That being said, on with the show.
Despite being a so-called "classic", this film has some serious flaws that prevent it from being even half as good as people claim it is (in my eyes anyway). Firstly, I found that choosing Jack Nicholson for the lead role was an abject failure. The story is supposed to be about a more-or-less good man and his descent into madness, exacerbated by the evil forces in the hotel. This just doesn't come across properly as Nicholson plays the character like he was irredeemably evil to begin with and only gets more so as the film wears on.
Also, several of the "scares" in the movie just left me scratching my head. If you're going to put a guy in a dog costume doing what he was doing in that one room (you know what I'm talking about) and have it supposed to be scary, explain what was going on ahead of time so as not to just spring something like that on the audience then never mention it again.
If you're going to call the movie "The Shining" and go through all of the trouble of explaining what that is, at least make it useful at some point. Sure, Danny calls Dick O'Halloran and he comes running from Florida, but as soon he walks in the front door he gets an axe to the back and dies ? Talk about anti-climactic. After that, Danny's abilities are never spoken of again. Quite honestly, I felt that made the Shining and Scatman Crothers' character utterly pointless.
Danny's little friend who lives in his finger, Tony, (I call him Mr. Bimbo) is probably the dumbest addition to this horribly bad adaptation.
Danny Lloyd's ability to concentrate for a long time got him the role, however I felt that it just meant that he could sit, slack-jawed, staring at a wall for several minutes on end.
Despite all of that, I did feel that it did have a very well-established sense of isolation, the directing itself was quite good (if a little long-winded), and Shelley Duvall was great.
I can't honestly bring myself to give it any more than a 6/10 as, for a horror movie, not a single moment of this film had me scared. - StarsGary SiniseMolly RingwaldJamey SheridanAfter a deadly plague kills most of the world's population, the remaining survivors split into two groups - one led by a benevolent elder and the other by a malevolent being - to face each other in a final battle between good and evil.
