Divisive/Polarizing films
If you're someone who's unfamiliar with a certain film you come to IMDB (or any other site) to find info on it. But instead of getting a clear idea of whether or not the movie is mostly considered good or bad you get mixed confusing/conflicting opinions about it. some going into Flame war territory. Note: i know that no one thing is ever universally liked/hated, so this isn't about that. this list is about films that tend to divide audiences down the middle. i'll give my personal opinion but i'm gonna remain neutral as i don't fault anyone for liking something i don't nor hate something i like....be prepared to see A LOT of genre films, films with political subtext, and TONS of heavily contested prequels/sequels/remakes listed.....list will be ongoing,

- DirectorAng LeeStarsEric BanaJennifer ConnellySam ElliottBruce Banner, a genetics researcher with a tragic past, suffers an accident that causes him to transform into a raging green monster when he gets angry.Hulk (and probably watchmen) is a text book example of divided opinion. Great underrated gem, or a complete mess with a director who don't understand the character?? my personal opinion?: i thought it was well made, BUT i understand why it's polarizing.
- DirectorPaul HaggisStarsDon CheadleSandra BullockThandiwe NewtonLos Angeles citizens with vastly separate lives collide in interweaving stories of race, loss and redemption.terrible film that teaches us "racism is bad", or a genuinely good film? the flame wars over this film tend to veer into unfortunate implications territory, which is kinda ironic to me. my personal opinion?...well i liked it. but considering the subject matter i'm not surprise it's flame bait.
- DirectorZack SnyderStarsJackie Earle HaleyPatrick WilsonCarla GuginoIn a version of 1985 where superheroes exist, the murder of a colleague sends active vigilante Rorschach on the trail of a conspiracy that will change the course of history.A boring bleak, sadistic, slow film with a misleading trailer, and a film that does a disservice by being TOO faithful? or a imperfect masterpiece that will be vindicated by history years from now? my personal OP?: i rather enjoyed it..and was enthralled by it. roger ebert agrees. lol
note: however most tend to universally agree that the opening montage was epic and moving.
Also be prepared to see alot of Zack Snyder entries... - DirectorF. Gary GrayStarsGerard ButlerJamie FoxxLeslie BibbA frustrated man decides to take justice into his own hands after a plea bargain sets one of his family's killers free.a great film with a interesting take on revenge?, or a movie where nobody is likeable? what i have noticed is that the contention comes from arguments on whether the 2 leads are "good" or "bad" , or whether or not Clyde "won" and proved his point or "lost". basically people are projecting their own ideology and political beliefs into the film (much like crash) my personal opinion?: i, don't know really, i'm a HUGE fan of F. Gary Gray but i had mixed feelings about this film.
- DirectorNimród AntalStarsAdrien BrodyLaurence FishburneTopher GraceA group of elite warriors parachute into an unfamiliar jungle and are hunted by members of a merciless alien race.A great step in the right direction?, or more stagnation? this is mostly between core audiences though. my personal opinion?: i don't hate it but i felt that the tension was forced and didn't flow as natural as the original. Plus i thought that it was no worse or better than the AVP films. but i still think it was a solid film.
- DirectorStephen HopkinsStarsDanny GloverGary BuseyKevin Peter HallThe Predator returns to Earth, this time to stake a claim on the war-torn streets of a dystopian Los Angeles.same as predators, some thinks it underrated others think it was a terrible sequel. my personal opinion?: i liked it and thought danny glover was a awesome lead.
- DirectorPaul W.S. AndersonStarsSanaa LathanLance HenriksenRaoul BovaDuring an archaeological expedition on Bouvetøya Island in Antarctica, a team of archaeologists and other scientists find themselves caught up in a battle between the two legends. Soon, the team realize that only one species can win.A great popcorn flick?, or a terrible watered down kiddie adaptation of the beloved darkhorse comic series? (that's if they realize it's based on the comics and not the films), alternatively a terrible dilution of both franchises conceptually?. there's 3 sets of arguments about this film. one group loves the film for what it is, others hate that FOX made a cheesy safe PG-13 film with no space marines, and not set in the future, another group is the fans of both franchises who are mutually exclusive who hates the idea regardless. MY OP?: i'm in the second group. However Sanaa is so gorgeous and was excellent as the lead.
- DirectorColin StrauseGreg StrauseStarsReiko AylesworthSteven PasqualeShareeka EppsWarring Alien and Predator races descend on a rural Colorado town, where unsuspecting residents must band together for any chance of survival.same issue as the first film, except that the people who like the first film HATE this one and vice versa. to some this is what the first should have been, others seems to hate the very dark sadistic tone of the film, plus people seem to think wolf was incompetent..my opinion?: i still hate that it was still set on present day earth but enjoyed it more than the first.
- DirectorBrett RatnerStarsPatrick StewartHugh JackmanHalle BerryThe human government develops a cure for mutations, and Jean Grey becomes a darker uncontrollable persona called the Phoenix who allies with Magneto, causing escalation into an all-out battle for the X-Men.great film, where x-men goes all out? or wolverine and his friends part 3? alternatively a short film that was crammed with too many characters with little characterizations. my op?: well...lets just say i almost gave up on the x-men after this lol
- DirectorGavin HoodStarsHugh JackmanLiev SchreiberRyan ReynoldsThe early years of James Logan, featuring his rivalry with his brother Victor Creed, his service in the special forces team Weapon X, and his experimentation into the metal-lined mutant Wolverine.more wolverine, for better or for worse? the less we talk about what happened to dead pool the better. my OP?:i didn't hate it i just thought it was average, and safe. although some scenes i did find excellent. i just don't trust fox to really make a good film. and the rumors about the behind the scenes meddling was already a bad sign.
- DirectorLana WachowskiLilly WachowskiStarsEmile HirschMatthew FoxChristina RicciYoung driver, Speed Racer, aspires to be champion of the racing world with the help of his family and his high-tech Mach 5 automobile.great fun film that captures the spirit of the cartoon?, or a seizure inducing Technicolor mess?
my OP?: i liked it. - DirectorBryan SingerStarsBrandon RouthKevin SpaceyKate BosworthSuperman returns to Earth after spending five years in space examining his homeworld Krypton. But he finds things have changed while he was gone, and he must once again prove himself important to the world.a slow long boring film that apes the Donner film too much and doesn't have it's own identity?, or a outstanding homage to the Donner film? my OP?: it wasn't for me, i appreciate what singer was aiming for though.
Note: interestingly enough X3 came out around the same time. people were saying X-Men needed Sup's length for character development, while Sup's needed X3's length and action. - DirectorAntoine FuquaStarsDenzel WashingtonEthan HawkeScott GlennA rookie cop spends his first day as a Los Angeles narcotics officer with a rogue detective who isn't what he appears to be.great gritty crime/police drama?, or a overrated film where Washington's Oscar win was undeserved? My OP?: i thought it was just ok.
Notes: people who hate this film hates it for different reasons, one group hates this film cause they thought Washington's Oscar win was politically motivated, Others hate it because they thought the industry was being racist cynics for giving him a Oscar for playing a corrupt evil character. especially after he was over looked when he was in arguably better roles. - DirectorZack SnyderStarsEmily BrowningVanessa HudgensAbbie CornishA young girl institutionalized by her abusive stepfather retreats to an alternative reality as a coping strategy and envisions a plan to help her escape.Great genre-busting action film?, or a incoherent mess that looks like it stole every trope imaginable from every anime/comicbook/video game/film imaginable? my OP?: i LOVED it...that is all.
Notes: to be honest i saw the polarization coming a mile away. - DirectorMarc ForsterStarsBilly Bob ThorntonHalle BerryTaylor SimpsonAfter a family tragedy, a racist prison guard re-examines his attitudes while falling in love with the African-American wife of the last prisoner he executed. The EXACT same issues as Training Day. My OP?: not for me, although halle is hot.
- DirectorRon SheltonStarsKurt RussellVing RhamesScott SpeedmanA robbery homicide investigation triggers a series of events that will cause a corrupt LAPD officer to question his tactics.Great crime drama? or more liberal Hollywood propaganda? again i think this is about people projecting their own socio-political ideology onto the film instead of liking it/hating it for what it is. my OP?: i liked it, and kurt was awesome in it.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsDonald PleasenceLisa BlountJameson ParkerA group of graduate students and scientists uncover an ancient canister in an abandoned church, but when they open the container, they inadvertently unleash a strange liquid and an evil force on all humanity.an underrated masterpiece, with a interesting concept?, or a terrible incoherent film that marks carpenter's decline? my OP: this is one of my favorite carpenter films!!
- DirectorFrank DarabontStarsThomas JaneMarcia Gay HardenLaurie HoldenA freak storm unleashes a species of bloodthirsty creatures on a small town, where a small band of citizens hole up in a supermarket and fight for their lives.a dark bleak down beat movie that's considered either good or bad for those very reasons. My OP: I loved and thought the polarizing ending was deliciously dark. hell even Stephen king loved it!!
Notes: i find it ironic that horror films with dark serious tones are the ones most polarizing among people who claim to be "horror fans"..why is that??...serious question. - DirectorJohn Erick DowdleStarsJennifer CarpenterSteve HarrisColumbus ShortA television reporter and her cameraman are trapped inside a building quarantined by the CDC, after the outbreak of a mysterious virus which turns humans into bloodthirsty killers.a terrible rehash of a great Spanish flick? or a great film that's just as good as the Spanish version? my OP: i saw both and loved both
- DirectorEdward AndersonStarsTony CurranPeyton ListCameron GoodmanA late night airport shuttle ride home descends into darkness.a misogynistic sleazy film?, or a great dark film that covers a real world issue? my OP?: i thought it was slow, and one twist that happened in the middle of the film i saw coming a mile away. the ending was dark but not terribly shocking considering you can figure out whats happening before the ending.
- DirectorMichael SpierigPeter SpierigStarsFelicity MasonMungo McKayRob JenkinsA quaint Australian fishing village is overcome by meteorites that turn its residents into the ravenous undead, leaving a small group of those unharmed to find a way out.a great zombie satire on par with Shaun of the dead, or flat out terrible? my op?: i thought it was OK, didn't love it but i didn't hate it either.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsKurt RussellZoë BellRosario DawsonTwo separate sets of voluptuous women are stalked at different times by a scarred stuntman who uses his "death proof" cars to execute his murderous plans.a slow boring film with too much mundane dialog?, or another Tarantino classic? my OP?: it was AIGHT, the sexy leads made up for it tho.
- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsLori CardilleTerry AlexanderJoseph PilatoAs the world is overrun by zombies, a group of scientists and military personnel sheltering in an underground bunker in Florida must decide on how they should deal with the undead horde.a boring dialog heavy mediocre zombie film and the starting decline of Romero?, or a underrated gem, with alot of great character nuances? my OP: it had to grow on me, as i got older i loved it more.
Notes: i think after a few years there are more people that love this film. i think that's why it went from being a weak entry into the living dead series and upgraded to a polarizing film. if you call that a step up. there's also the debate on whether or not the scientists are idiots, or the soldiers. i think people missed the point that they ALL were short sighted idiots. - DirectorMarc ForsterStarsDaniel CraigOlga KurylenkoMathieu AmalricJames Bond descends into mystery as he tries to stop an organisation from eliminating a country's most valuable resource.a badly edited film that wants to be the bourne films so badly?, or a tightly filmed underrated bond film? my OP?: i haven't seen it yet lol
- DirectorTom SaviniStarsTony ToddPatricia TallmanTom TowlesWhen the unburied dead return to life and seek human victims, seven refugees shelter in a house in the Pennsylvanian countryside.While some say that it's incredibly underrated and complements the original, some even saying it's far more entertaining. others however say it's a terrible remake that tarnishes the original. Sub-arguments of this film are;
Patricia Tallman's interpretation of barbera vs the original actress (O'dea) interpretation. Plus there's the level of bad ass that Tallman's character took.
Tony Todd vs Duane Jones' version of Ben.
Whether or not the revamped ending is better than the original.
my OP?: i LOVED this film i think tom savini did a great job. - DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsTom CruiseDakota FanningTim RobbinsAn alien invasion threatens the future of humanity. The catastrophic nightmare is depicted through the eyes of one American family fighting for survival.a nice epic modern interpretation of H.G. Wells classic? or a terrible film with a ridiculous set up for the aliens, with the most obnoxious family ever? my OP?: i liked it, but yeah the family was kinda grating.
- DirectorJohn HillcoatStarsViggo MortensenCharlize TheronKodi Smit-McPheeIn a dangerous post-apocalyptic world, an ailing father defends his son as they slowly travel to the sea.awesome moving film about a loving father and his son's struggle for survival? or a depressing, bleak, darker than black, brutal film that's totally un-enjoyable? my OP?: i loved it and was sad that it was snubbed.
Notes: to be fair the book it's based upon is rather polarizing too. - DirectorPascal LaugierStarsMorjana AlaouiMylène JampanoïCatherine BéginA young woman's quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity.further proof that foreign horror is surpassing American horror cinema? or pretentious gory trash? my OP: i liked it although i felt that the ending made the film moot.
- DirectorAlexandre AjaStarsCécile de FranceMaïwennPhilippe NahonBest friends Marie and Alexia decide to spend a quiet weekend at Alexia's parents' secluded farmhouse. But on the night of their arrival, the girls' idyllic getaway turns into an endless night of horror.a film that collapses under it's own faulty logic? or a unique foreign horror film? my OP?: I wanted to like it, i really did, but the reveal towards the end breaks the movie because of the contradictions
- DirectorLexi AlexanderStarsRay StevensonDominic WestJulie BenzFrank Castle, known as the Punisher, ruthlessly demolishes organized crime, but it starts an even bigger war.A film that finally does the character justice? or yet another terrible adaptation of the character? my OP?: i liked it the tone was inconsistent though.
- DirectorChris KentisStarsBlanchard RyanDaniel TravisSaul SteinBased on the true story of two scuba divers accidentally stranded in shark infested waters after their tour boat has left.Open Water is either a indie masterpiece drawing maximum tension and drama from two actors and a whole lot of water or it's two irritating yuppies sniping at each other for an hour while the audience cheers for the sharks. My OP?: haven't seen it in awhile but i remember liking it.
- DirectorLouis C.K.StarsChris RockLance CroutherJ.B. Smoove"The Man" is baffled by a chill hero's invincible weapon: gibberish.A plain terrible film? or a modern day cult classic? My OP?: i don't remember what i thought of it lol, it's been awhile.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsHugh JackmanRachel WeiszSean Patrick ThomasAs a modern-day scientist, Tommy is struggling with mortality, desperately searching for the medical breakthrough that will save the life of his cancer-stricken wife, Izzi. The Fountain Life-alteringly profound Tear Jerker, or melodramatic, impenetrably muddled Author Tract? Seeing as how it's Aronofsky's tribute to Solaris and 2001: A Space Odyssey, this comes as no surprise. my OP?: i haven't seen it yet lol
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsHarrison FordKate CapshawKe Huy QuanIn 1935, Indiana Jones is tasked by Indian villagers with reclaiming a rock stolen from them by a secret cult beneath the catacombs of an ancient palace.A dark disgusting sequel? or a awesome follow up? My OP?: I LOVED this movie growing up!!.
- DirectorRichard KellyStarsJake GyllenhaalJena MaloneMary McDonnellAfter narrowly escaping a bizarre accident, a troubled teenager is plagued by visions of a man in a large rabbit suit who manipulates him to commit a series of crimes.A awesome modern day cult classic?, or a overrated over hyped incoherent film? my OP?: i liked it well enough.
- DirectorSteven ShainbergStarsJames SpaderMaggie GyllenhaalJeremy DaviesA young woman, recently released from a mental hospital, gets a job as a secretary to a demanding lawyer, where their employer-employee relationship turns into a sexual, sadomasochistic one. Some see it as a sweet unconventional love story, while others find it....just disturbing MY OP?: i remember liking it..
- DirectorBryan BertinoStarsScott SpeedmanLiv TylerGemma WardA young couple staying in an isolated vacation home are terrorized by three unknown assailants.People either found the masks and lack of motive creepy or silly. My OP?: i thought it had some great tense scenes but nothing groundbreaking. liked it overall though.
Notes: Also depends on how scared you are of home invasion. - DirectorZack SnyderStarsSarah PolleyVing RhamesMekhi PhiferA nurse, a policeman, a young married couple, a salesman and other survivors of a worldwide plague that is producing aggressive, flesh-eating zombies, take refuge in a mega Midwestern shopping mall.evil violation of the original?, or fun straight-ahead popcorn flick? My OP?: i loved it.
Note: the general consensus among mainstream audiences is that the film is good, the polarization is among the core fans. - DirectorMichael HanekeStarsNaomi WattsTim RothMichael PittTwo psychopathic young men take a family hostage in their cabin.Funny Games. 47% of metacritic reviews are 0 or 1. 30% are 9 or 10. Only 5% are in the middle range of 4-6. Virtually everyone seems to agree that it is unpleasant to watch—the division is between those who feel it is a brilliant piece of art and social commentary, and yet further proof that foreign horror is cutting edge vs. those who feel it is nothing but pretentious Gorn. MY OP?: haven't seem it yet.
- DirectorDavid SilvermanStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightAfter Homer pollutes the town's water supply, Springfield is encased in a gigantic dome by the EPA and the Simpsons are declared fugitives. The Simpsons Movie had this effect on its fans, with some considering it to be one of the funniest, and most fun and epic films of all time on par with the show's greatest episodes from the mid-nineties, and others claiming it's three post-Shark Jump episodes stitched together awkwardly with the flaws of the newer episodes turned Up To Eleven. My OP? i thought it was just ok, i thought it started off funny as hell but turned into another homer/marge melodrama.
- DirectorSpike LeeStarsDerek LukeMichael EalyLaz AlonsoSet in 1944 Italy, the story of four black American soldiers who get trapped in a Tuscan village during WWII.Miracle at St. Anna is either a masterpiece, a imperfect masterpiece, completely terrible and everything in between. MY OP: i loved it!, it won me over especially at the end.
Note: some say the back lash against this movie was mostly towards Spike Lee than anything else. which is unfortunate because outside of lee nobody else is willing to tell the story of black WW2 vets. the entertainment industry don't even acknowledge that they exist! - DirectorAlbert HughesAllen HughesStarsDenzel WashingtonMila KunisRay StevensonA drifter fights his way across a ravaged, post-apocalyptic America while protecting a sacred book that holds the secrets to humanity's salvation.Either it's an interesting, rather cerebral, and highly enjoyable post-apocalyptic movie, or it's too preachy and implausible. my OP?: i thought it kinda dragged at parts but liked it over all.
- DirectorVincenzo NataliStarsAdrien BrodySarah PolleyDelphine ChanéacGenetic engineers Clive Nicoli and Elsa Kast hope to achieve fame by successfully splicing together the DNA of different animals to create new hybrid animals for medical use.Audiences either find it a refreshing twist to the monster movie genre or a cliched, Squeamish film with characters running with the Idiot Ball. my OP?: i found it fascinating and was anticipating it as far back as 07 when the nude live action concept picks of Dren was released.
- DirectorDaniel StammStarsPatrick FabianAshley BellIris BahrA troubled evangelical minister agrees to let his last exorcism be filmed by a documentary crew.Absolutely terrible, and or the first 9/10 of the film is good while that last 1/10 ruined the whole movie, vs this film is awesome. My OP?: i loved it, it was slow but it kept me engage.
Note: interesting to note that the critics was generally kind in their reviews giving it high ratings, while becoming polarizing among the general public. - DirectorMichael G. BartlettKevin GatesStarsScott AinslieToby BowmanVictoria SummerAn unknown virus begins spreading and within weeks it engulfs the entire planet. Upon the death of its host, the virus would reanimate the corpse until it was no longer able to support itself. Soon, the planet was infested with the undead.a completely terrible no budget film that's in a long list of follow the leader mediocre copycat found footage/POV horror movies, or is this what diary of the dead SHOULD have been? my OP?: i LOVED this. i thought the low budget added to the gritty creepy feel and realism of the film, where as diary failed in this area.
- DirectorMichael GoiStarsAmber PerkinsRachel QuinnDean WaiteTwo teenage girls encounter an Internet child predator.polarizing for the EXACT same reason as shuttle, although the ending to this one is arguably much darker. my OP?: i liked it but felt uncomfortable with liking it. lol
- DirectorRoger MichellStarsBen AffleckSamuel L. JacksonKim StauntonA young lawyer and a businessman share a small automobile accident, and their mutual road rage escalates into a feud.same issues as law abiding citizen, and like that film i think people are once again projecting their own personal beliefs unto the film. my OP?: i thought it was a great thriller but suffered from too many contrived coincidences
- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsMichelle MorganJoshua CloseShawn RobertsA group of young film students run into real-life zombies while filming a horror movie of their own.a improvement over land of the dead?, or further proof of Romero's decline? my OP? i loved it, i did think it was a little too polished to be a found footage type film, but this was explained away towards the end so fair enough i guess
- DirectorTyler PerryStarsJanet JacksonAnika Noni RoseWhoopi GoldbergEach of the women portray one of the characters represented in the collection of twenty poems, revealing different issues that impact women in general and women of color in particular.Tyler Perry finally made a good movie?, or did he butcher a excellent play?, alternatively is it a depressing sap story with no positivity for black women? my OP?: i haven't seen it yet.
- DirectorTyler PerryStarsTyler PerryLoretta DevineShad MossThe crazy and comical Mabel Simmons, otherwise known as Madea, tries to wrangle her fighting family together for a family dinner regarding the health of her niece Shirley.this actually is a place holder for all the madea films in general. Tyler Perry is polarizing even among the target audience. but usually for widely different reasons. they're either terrible films filled with moral/value dissonance and terrible stereotypes, or they're some of the very few films that doesn't marginalize black women...draw your own conclusion. my OP?: i generally never seen his films. at least not all the way through.
Note: it should be noted that the praise about black female depiction does have a few black female detractors as well claiming that all of his black female characters are miserable train wrecks who are never happy. while a few black men say he depicts black men negatively by constantly pandering to black women. others believe the detractors in general are just a very loud vocal minority. - DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsHarrison FordCate BlanchettShia LaBeoufIndiana Jones becomes entangled in a Soviet plot to uncover the secret behind mysterious artifacts known as the Crystal Skulls.a great return of indie or a heartbreaking disappointment?
my op?: i thought it was ok - DirectorSam RaimiStarsTobey MaguireKirsten DunstTopher GraceA strange black entity from another world bonds with Peter Parker and causes inner turmoil as he contends with new villains, temptations, and revenge.a great final chapter to the Rami films, or is it a complete and utter disaster?
my op?: i enjoyed it...but Venom was terrible tho - DirectorLouis LeterrierStarsEdward NortonLiv TylerTim RothBruce Banner, a scientist on the run from the U.S. Government, must find a cure for the monster he turns into whenever he loses his temper.so how about a second try at this hulk thing. maybe this one will get it right?...right???
WRONG!!....this film is either a great action film, or yet another film that got the character wrong
my op?: i loved it, and actually preferred the menacing design of Norton's hulk to ruffalo's. - DirectorMatthijs van Heijningen Jr.StarsMary Elizabeth WinsteadJoel EdgertonUlrich ThomsenAt an Antarctica research site, the discovery of an alien craft leads to a confrontation between graduate student Kate Lloyd and scientist Dr. Sander Halvorson.a good movie in it's own right? or a terrible film that has nothing in it that made Carpenter's film great?
my op?: it's entertaining in it's own right, but it's still overshadowed by the carpenter film in the view of my rose tinted glasses.
Notes: basically it's a prequel to carpenter's film. in fact it's just like his film except minus the suffocating tension and intense paranoia. which was intentional according to the scriptwriter. according to him the studio wanted a leaner and meaner film. ironically what they excluded from the prequel might have been what made the carpenter film a unappealing box office bomb, but also caused this film not to be as beloved as the carpenter version. they was likely screwed either way, a conundrum that looks like it's also happening to Bladerunner 2049. - DirectorRidley ScottStarsNoomi RapaceLogan Marshall-GreenMichael FassbenderFollowing clues to the origin of mankind, a team finds a structure on a distant moon, but they soon realize they are not alone.a boring film that had a weak finish (or a good film that had a weak finish), and fassbender as it's sole saving grace, or a great addition to the alien franchise?
my op?: well it LOOKED great, i liked the ideas behind it although it's been done to death in science fiction. but otherwise i was under whelmed by it. - DirectorXavier GensStarsKarina TestaAurélien WiikPatrick LigardesA gang of young thieves flee Paris during the violent aftermath of a political election, only to hole up at an Inn run by neo-Nazis.like every other audacious foreign horror film Fropntier (s) proved very polarizing. on one hand highly praised, and on another heavily derided. intial reaction was very positive till it got wider release.
my op?: haven't seen it yet. - DirectorRyûhei KitamuraKoji HashimotoShûsuke KanekoStarsMasahiro MatsuokaRei KikukawaDon FryeGodzilla's fiftieth Anniversary project, in which Godzilla travels around the world to fight his old foes and his allies plus a new, mysterious monster named Monster X.The 28th Godzilla film and the sixth and final entry in the Millennium era. Due to the previous films not making enough yen, Toho decided to temporarily retire Godzilla with a bang. They brought back many Kaiju that haven't been seen in many decades, a music soundtrack different to previous movies, and a more action-oriented story. Unfortunately, it was the least attended film of the Millennium series and reviews were mixed. Some criticized it for not developing the story and characters enough while others lauded it for being a fun celebration of the King of the Monsters. in fact TV Tropes makes it out to be the most divisive Godzilla film ever made...EVER!...PERIOD.
My Op?: i saw it on crackle and thought it was typical Godzilla goodness. i did find it boring at parts - DirectorMark Steven JohnsonStarsBen AffleckJennifer GarnerColin FarrellA man blinded by toxic waste which also enhanced his remaining senses fights crime as an acrobatic martial arts superhero.a terrible film with no redeeming qualities or a film that's vindicated through the directors cut?
- DirectorFede AlvarezStarsJane LevyShiloh FernandezJessica LucasFive friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods.this is a very strange , but not surprising example. most of this boils down to fans of evil dead 2, and army of darkness not liking this one cause it's closer in tone to the original which was straight faced horror. it also didn't help that people were confused about it being a remake/reboot or a sequel. either way people are bitterly split over it.
- DirectorSamuel BayerStarsJackie Earle HaleyRooney MaraKyle GallnerThe spectre of a disfigured man haunts the children of the parents who murdered him, stalking and killing them in their dreams.polarizing for almost the same reason as evil dead, the straight faced dark tone put people off, well that and it was a remake that re-cast a beloved character. plus changing the make up design.. others like it for the same reasons, also saying he actually looks like a burn victim. plus people enjoyed the darker tone.
- DirectorMarc ForsterStarsBrad PittMireille EnosDaniella KerteszFormer United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop a zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatens to destroy humanity itself.a film plagued by development hell and production issues was highly polarizing when finally released. the domestic take was fairly weak, but internationally a hit. critics thought the film was ok. the general American public either despises it because of the safe PG-13 rating, the bastardization of the source material, or just didn't like it on it's own merit, or alternatively people liked it because of those very reasons. There is some people who fall in between who likes the concept but hate the execution.
- DirectorZack SnyderStarsHenry CavillAmy AdamsMichael ShannonAn alien child is evacuated from his dying world and sent to Earth to live among humans. His peace is threatened when other survivors of his home planet invade Earth. It's either a epic superman movie that's everything superman returns wasn't, or a needlessly dark film with an absurd amount of collateral damage in the third act. THE FLAMES MY GOD,THEY BURN!!!!!
Should be noted that the argument about it being dark and gritty is heavily contested. - DirectorJennifer KentStarsEssie DavisNoah WisemanDaniel HenshallA single mother and her child fall into a deep well of paranoia when an eerie children's book titled "Mister Babadook" manifests in their home.A great creepy cerebral film, with a very good child actor. or a boring pretentious movie that retreads ideas that's already been done with an annoying kid to boot?
- DirectorNate ParkerStarsNate ParkerArmie HammerPenelope Ann MillerNat Turner, a literate slave and preacher in the antebellum South, orchestrates an uprising.Reviews are all over the place, some saying it's a "triumph", others saying it's a mess. Some people that are in between says that the 3rd act is where the movie actually shine and that rest is boring. And then there's those who refuse to watch it because of either the content, or Nate Parker past legal drama.
My op: I really want to see this film for my self. - DirectorZack SnyderStarsBen AffleckHenry CavillAmy AdamsBatman is manipulated by Lex Luthor to fear Superman. Superman´s existence is meanwhile dividing the world and he is framed for murder during an international crisis. The heroes clash and force the neutral Wonder Woman to reemerge.Whoo boy...critic's ate this for breakfast but the public was bitterly divided over it. The Ultimate Cut helped a lot tho over the years in improving this movie's standing among general audiences. But for the most part don't bring this film up in polite company.
My op: I liked it, but The Ultimate Cut is the far superior version imo. - DirectorPaul FeigStarsMelissa McCarthyKristen WiigKate McKinnonFollowing a ghost invasion of Manhattan, paranormal enthusiasts Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates, nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann, and subway worker Patty Tolan band together to stop the otherworldly threat. So is this film good? who knows, depending on who you ask. If it's bad, is its bad because it's bad or because of the all female leads? Same question can be ask about it being good. Is it good because it's good? Or good only because of female leads?
- DirectorDavid AyerStarsWill SmithJared LetoMargot RobbieA secret government agency recruits some of the most dangerous incarcerated super-villains to form a defensive task force. Their first mission: save the world from the apocalypse. The second entry in the DCEU was a huge hit, but critics was luke warm to it, and geeks was bitterly divided over it like the 2 previous DCEU films.
My op: I liked it but felt the tone needed more consistency...plus joker was shockingly underused surprisingly. - DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaOscar IsaacAs a new threat to the galaxy rises, Rey, a desert scavenger, and Finn, an ex-stormtrooper, must join Han Solo and Chewbacca to search for the one hope of restoring peace.A worthy entry into the star wars canon? Or a safe rehash of a new hope that totally wasted Captain Phasma? Also is the lead protagonist a good character or a boring Mary Sue? Keylo Ren is either creepy or whiney anakin 2.0
Note: it's criticism is almost similar to that of Singer's Superman Returns. Basically it's nostalgia porn with no identity of its own. - DirectorRobert EggersStarsAnya Taylor-JoyRalph InesonKate DickieA family in 1630s New England is torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic and possession.A great outstanding horror film with a lot of tension. Or a boring movie that goes nowhere? People are bitterly divided over this movie.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsMichael FassbenderKatherine WaterstonBilly CrudupThe crew of a colony ship, bound for a remote planet, discover an uncharted paradise with a threat beyond their imagination, and must attempt a harrowing escape.Surprise, surprise, surprise....same issues as Prometheus. Only thing people can agree on is that Ridley Scott still have amazing morbid visuals.
- DirectorGore VerbinskiStarsDane DeHaanJason IsaacsMia GothAn ambitious young executive is sent to retrieve his company's CEO from an idyllic but mysterious "wellness center" at a remote location in the Swiss Alps, but soon suspects that the spa's treatments are not what they seem.people seem to be in-between liking or hating this movie. To some, This movie did so many things right... but the things it did wrong were SO BAD that the movie just ends up face-planting. Not to mention the fact the trailer promised something that it wasn't.
My OP: I think this is why people are so divided on it. It's not a good movie. It's not a bad movie. It's not even a "meh" movie. - DirectorJonathan LiebesmanStarsAaron EckhartMichelle RodriguezBridget MoynahanA squad of U.S. Marines becomes the last line of defense against a global invasion.People seem to like the first half, but hate everything after. Some audiences are vice versa. Some people loved the depiction of the US Marines. Some hate it BECAUSE of the Marines.
- DirectorDavid CarsonStarsAngela BettisPatricia ClarksonRena SoferCarrie White is a lonely and painfully shy teenage girl with telekinetic powers who is slowly pushed to the edge of insanity by frequent bullying from both her classmates and her domineering, religious mother. The division seems to be between people who think this is a terrible version of the original book or the film, versus those who think it's a better adaptation of the source material..
- DirectorDuncan JonesStarsTravis FimmelPaula PattonBen FosterAs an Orc horde invades the planet Azeroth using a magic portal, a few human heroes and dissenting Orcs must attempt to stop the true evil behind this war.A film that proves that video game movies can be properly adapted. Or it's the exact opposite. A domestic bomb, but a international juggernaut.
- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaMark HamillRey develops her abilities with the help of Luke Skywalker, as the Resistance prepares for battle against the First Order.A huge box office success that eventually divided long time Star Wars fans while casual fans ate it up. Among the issues people had were the dropped plot points from TFA, and it's paper thin development of the first order, and some saying there's too many leads. Which some point to it being a case of trying to please too many people. Even the people that didn't like it, hated it for different reasons. Only thing people agree about is that it's the best looking Star Wars film to date.
- DirectorZack SnyderStarsBen AffleckGal GadotJason MomoaFueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman's selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his new-found ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy.A film that was slightly better received than BvS by the critics and audiences, but still fell deep into the divide thanks to the conflicting tone which put off people on both sides of the too dark, or too light argument.
- DirectorKevin KölschDennis WidmyerStarsJason ClarkeAmy SeimetzJohn LithgowDr. Louis Creed and his wife, Rachel, relocate from Boston to rural Maine with their two young children. The couple soon discover a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods near their new home.A film that got great early reviews from places like IGN, and SXSW. Then it got to a wider audience and here we are lol
- DirectorAdam WingardStarsJames Allen McCuneCallie HernandezCorbin ReidAfter discovering a video showing what he believes to be his vanished sister Heather, James and a group of friends head to the forest believed to be inhabited by the Blair Witch.Just like other examples, Blair Witch opened up to a lot of positive early reviews. But once it reached a much larger audience the more negative the reviews became. And audiences opinion became more split.
- DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaOscar IsaacThe surviving Resistance faces the First Order once again in the conclusion of the Skywalker saga.A movie that "fixed" the problems with The Last Jedi? Or just further proof that Disney didn't have a thought out plan for this sequel trilogy. Also the handling of Finn, and the introduction of Palpatine is also heavily contested.
- DirectorPatty JenkinsStarsGal GadotChris PineKristen WiigDiana must contend with a colleague, and with a businessman whose desire for extreme wealth sends the world down a path of destruction, after an ancient artifact that grants wishes goes missing.A uplifting hero movie that was needed at the time of 2020? Or a long boring, cheesy, incoherent mess with terrible action scenes, that screwed the excellent first film over?
Note: Like the Pet Semetary remake (among others) the movie had excellent early reviews, then it nosed dived when more critics got the chance to watch it. The flame wars on the internet is The Last Jedi, BvS levels. - DirectorCathy YanStarsMargot RobbieRosie PerezMary Elizabeth WinsteadAfter splitting with the Joker, Harley Quinn joins superheroines Black Canary, Huntress, and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from an evil crime lord. And yet another DCEU film that's got people bitterly divided. Arguments usually boils down to the aesthetics. The lack of real costumes, the fact that it was called Birds of Prey when in fact BoP was hardly in the film, the characterizations of Black Mask and Cassandra Cain, the goofy tone, the lack of action, whether or not it utilized it's R-rating, or even needed a R-rating. Not to mention dissenters saw it as more of a vanity project for Margot than a genuine adaptation of BoP or Harley Quinn.
- DirectorSimon BarrettSteven KostanskiChloe OkunoStarsAnna HopkinsChristian PotenzaBrian PaulA police S.W.A.T. team investigate a mysterious VHS tape and discover a sinister cult that has pre-recorded material which uncovers a nightmarish conspiracy. The first 2 films in the series are very well received, while the third is critically reviled. However people had hopes for 94 restoring faith back into the franchise. Well, that didn't quite happen. Instead what we got is a film that people love/hate to argue over. Even some of the individual stories are divisive.
Hail Raatma!! - DirectorDavid Gordon GreenStarsJamie Lee CurtisJudy GreerAndi MatichakSurviving victims of Michael Myers form a vigilante mob and vow to end his reign of terror. The first film in David Gordon Green's soon to be trilogy was very well received for the most part, and was lauded as a welcomed return to form. Kills on the other hand seems to have stumbled, causing hardcore Meyers fans to be split over it. Especially the ending
- DirectorAbel FerraraStarsGabrielle AnwarMeg TillyTerry KinneyA teenage girl and her father discover alien clones are replacing humans on a remote U.S. military base in Alabama.Director Abel Ferrera came to the Film late in production, and a very skiddish Warner Bros decided to give it a VERY limited release. The initial critical response was mixed, with some trashing the film, while other heaped praise on it for it's stylish look, and Abel's direction. The public's view of it is just as divided, with people saying it's the worst of the remakes, with a boring bland setting, and it's lack of bringing something new to the table.. While other's think it's a underrated gem of complete terror, with many praising the chilling turn by Meg Tilly, even the young actor who played Andy got praise from some audiences for his portrayal of a terrified and confused little kid.
- DirectorChloé ZhaoStarsGemma ChanRichard MaddenAngelina JolieThe saga of the Eternals, a race of immortal beings who lived on Earth and shaped its history and civilizations.Mixed from the critics to audiences. And a rotten tomato score. The problem I get with Eternals is that it didn't live up to the hype of being different, while simultaneously trying to keep the standard Marvel formula. And you ended up with a divisive film that pleased nobody.
