- Still unpacking this one but might be the most perfect, beautiful, touching, life-affirming movie in a long time
- So much to say about it but I will soon
- DirectorJake KasdanStarsDwayne JohnsonKaren GillanKevin HartFour teenagers are sucked into a magical video game, and the only way they can escape is to work together to finish the game.18 January 2018
- Such a promising premise, HS kids get sucked into video game but have the bodies of game characters...The Rock, Jack Black, etc...so having HS kids in those bodies make for some funny situations but after that wore off they had nothing...hardly even any animals in it
- Honest to christ...the special effects were better in the 1995 installment...and much more intense chase scenes, more imminent danger and funnier.
- DirectorBryan BuckleyStarsMelissa RauchGary ColeHaley Lu RichardsonA foul-mouthed former gymnastics bronze medalist with local celebrity status reluctantly trains a rising Olympics aspirant.19 January 2018
- Legendary sex scene...gymnasts like you've only heard of.
- Terrible reputation ever since it premiered at Sundance, not just being called unfunny...people HATED this movie. And after viewing it I really don't get it, plenty of jokes don't land but it takes a lot of chances...like having a hero like her, never even attempting to win the audience over until the last 2 minutes when apparently I'm supposed to feel like she pulls a Grinch and suddenly grows a heart......but what prevented this from being great was that right at the climax, where Hope has an opportunity to show that she's changed, she has a chance to destroy the skater set to replace her as local hero, and the audience sees her choose to crush her...it was so goddamn funny that I was the one crushed when it is revealed it was all a vision....Hope chose the right after all, giving way to convention
- Rang of Observe and Report
- Pairs naturally and hilariously with "I, Tonya"...current underground hit
- DirectorPaul Thomas AndersonStarsVicky KriepsDaniel Day-LewisLesley ManvilleSet in 1950s London, Reynolds Woodcock is a renowned dressmaker whose fastidious life is disrupted by a young, strong-willed woman, Alma, who becomes his muse and lover.20 January 2018
- The last 10 minutes I went from admiring it but feeling unmoved to feeling stunned how complete the story was emotionally, it suddenly went from jilted lover murder tale to an ultra-modern romance about love's shapeless form
- It felt so new, like most of his work
- It was like he anticipated what his fans wanted and did the opposite, as if the public has any influence on his art, doubtful. But he certainly tread new ground, even if he probably disappointed his more staunch supporters...at least one of my friends that is a fanatic was not left pleased
- I can't stop pondering was PT's thoughts were...is he comparing the art of dress-making to the art of film?...both taking a village to create but guided by a singular vision?
- ...coincidence that 19 out of 20 people involved in making the dress are matrons?....Reynolds' Oedipal relations with his own mother and Cyril and possibly many others, but ultimately Alma, keeps me considering what is being suggested...women thanklessly guiding great men through great accomplishments, all the while balancing his delicate sensibilities? A thank you letter to the women in his life? Admitting men can only obtain greatness while being propped up by great women?
- ...the growing fetish of powerlessness? Through maternal comfort and having all responsibility and strife of adulthood forcefully taken away?
- ...PT always has something interesting and legitimately edgy to say about sex, and about the chasm between society's idea of sex and actual sex.
- Vicky Krieps stood toe-to-toe with Daniel Day, I hope I see much more from her soon...supposedly Daniel Day's last film....nah
- The decadence and classicism of the set design and costume design were impeccable....even if it were a soulless film I would admire their craft as much as any film recently
- Add the score to that....Greenwood, muh boy
- I could go on all night, I'll see it again soon and write more
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsMeryl StreepTom HanksSarah PaulsonA cover-up spanning four U.S. Presidents pushes the country's first female newspaper publisher and her editor to join an unprecedented battle between press and government.22 January 2018
- Spielberg is musty and self-important
- Of course it's a good movie but it's stale like Bridge of Spies and War Horse and (less so) Lincoln
- This story is depressingly relevant right now due to Trump's current war on journalism, so it deserves a more rousing, inspiring rendition.
- I couldn't help but think about how much more riveting "Spotlight" was, while telling a similarly difficult story to convert to film
- DirectorJoel CoenEthan CoenStarsJohn GetzFrances McDormandDan HedayaThe owner of a seedy small-town Texas bar discovers that one of his employees is having an affair with his wife. A chaotic chain of misunderstandings, lies, and mischief ensues after he devises a plot to have them murdered.23 January 2018
- first Coen Bros film and a great debut
- So clearly this film is nothing more or less than a group of great ideas...not much skill needed for most of the shots and even the brilliant shots were simple but very new and already oozes cool, like most of their other stuff...example: drunk guy passed out on bar, camera on a dolly on the bar coming toward drunk guy for 5 or 6 seconds, I started to get concerned where the camera was going to go when it gets to the body but it keeps going...right as it comes to the guy the camera raises and lowers over him...and continues down the bar for a few more seconds.
- It made me laugh for some reason, rarely have I seen a camera movement joke, but there were subtle and funny jokes throughout the film
- Many similarities to Fargo, so many that it felt like a dry run for Fargo, they took so many shots and ideas from Blood Simple...not that that's a problem, their originality can't be questioned
- DirectorKyle BaldaPierre CoffinEric GuillonStarsSteve CarellKristen WiigTrey ParkerGru meets his long-lost, charming, cheerful, and more successful twin brother Dru, who wants to team up with him for one last criminal heist.23 January 2018
- First 2 felt fresh and funny and even-handed with it's sappy moments...this one is none of those
- Trey Parker was fine as the villain, but whenever his character did anything they had a spared-no-expense soundtrack of 80's pop...sounds like a good thing but they chose such over-played and familiar mega-hits...this year has had a lot of good soundtracks but this one was put together with little thought other than them being familiarly 80's to all
- Sentimental dad/daughter moments were insufferable
- And twice as much of Steve Carrell's crap accent isn't a good thing either
- They need to take their half a billion dollars and not make another one...they will
- DirectorBryan FogelStarsBryan FogelDave ZabriskieDon CatlinWhen Bryan sets out to uncover the truth about doping in sports, a chance meeting with a Russian scientist transforms his story from a personal experiment into a geopolitical thriller.25 January 2018
- - DirectorMatt SpicerStarsAubrey PlazaElizabeth OlsenO'Shea Jackson Jr.An unhinged social media stalker moves to LA and ingratiates herself into the life of an Instagram star.26 January 2018
- Nice start but I don't know what they're trying to do, I don't know if it's funny or scary or creepy or embarrassing
- DirectorDavid WainStarsFrank GingerichMorgan GingerichAnnette O'TooleIn the 1970s and '80s, National Lampoon's success and influence creates a new media empire overseen in part by the brilliant and troubled Douglas Kenney.26 January 2018
- SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL - Tower Theatre, midnight screening, with Ali & Aric
- Delightfully surprised by this, everyone was charming and really funny and full of info I didn't know I'd be so interested in about National Lampoon's Magazine, I knew very little about it before but they did a great job bragging without overdoing it
- And it helps when it's this damn funny
- DirectorTomas AlfredsonStarsMichael FassbenderRebecca FergusonCharlotte GainsbourgDetective Harry Hole investigates the disappearance of a woman whose scarf is found wrapped around an ominous-looking snowman.28 January 2018
- - DirectorJRAgnès VardaStarsAgnès VardaJRJeannine CarpentierDirector Agnes Varda and photographer/muralist J.R. journey through rural France and form an unlikely friendship.29 January 2018
- Inspiring and life-affirming, it's hard to know how to describe why I liked this so much...it just perfectly fits among every other Varda I've seen, she just wanders around telling me about all the things she loves about life, with great humor and thought-provoking philosophies
- It made me want to travel down the road and listen to peoples' stories, my opinion doesn't matter, just listen and find what each person lives for...hopefully everyone is deep down good...it felt that way here
- Varda's editing is the star, always is
- DirectorDK WelchmanHugh WelchmanStarsDouglas BoothJerome FlynnRobert GulaczykIn a story depicted in oil painted animation, a young man comes to the last hometown of painter Vincent van Gogh to deliver the troubled artist's final letter and ends up investigating his final days there.30 January 2018
- Sensational undertaking, a work of art that should be admired for a long time.
- Damaged by being ultimately a murder mystery caper with real people from his life, I'm cool with that and enjoyed it a lot but it doesn't hold up as a mystery....but it does hold up as a immaculate work of art
- DirectorJoel CoenEthan CoenStarsGabriel ByrneAlbert FinneyJohn TurturroTom Reagan, an advisor to a Prohibition-era crime boss, tries to keep the peace between warring mobs but gets caught in divided loyalties.1 February 2018
- Felt like a bad Godfather spoof episode of Star Trek
- Literally steals entire scenes from Godfather but on Lifetime budget scale
- Enough of what they fixed and put back into later movies...on second thought that's kinda what Blood Simple did too, but better...this relied almost entirely on set design and fast talking jabber jaw tough guys that eventually earned laughter, maybe I should've looked at it like a crappy spoof in the first place...but all the fans and apparently the Coens aren't trying to get laughs
- Oy...John Turturro & Marcia Gay are hilariously overacting....and Frances....and Finney....and Buschemi
- And I still didn't give a crap if any or all of them died at any time....Finney had a great uzi scene where he gets forced outta the tub and out the window, and onto the street to fire off 700 rounds
- DirectorChristian GudegastStarsGerard ButlerPablo SchreiberO'Shea Jackson Jr.An elite unit of the LA County Sheriff's Dept. and the state's most successful bank robbery crew clash as the outlaws plan a seemingly impossible heist on the Federal Reserve Bank.3 February 2018
- Plenty of things you like in an action movie
- Exciting direction and good acting but really lazy writing, a lot of ----
"Bad" Guy - 'Fuck you!'
and not much expertise in anything they're talking about but some good details that made it a good time, even though it felt too long and didn't even give enough screen time to the subplots, like the mess of a cop losing his marriage and family- Gerard Butler does a fine job but it eventually feels like everyone actually thinks he's a joke, not the maniac-that-gets-results type he wants to be
- Porn-stache was great
- And a nice premise, stealing bills before they get incinerated
- DirectorJoel CoenEthan CoenStarsNicolas CageHolly HunterTrey WilsonWhen a childless couple--an ex-con and an ex-cop--decide to help themselves to one of another family's quintuplets, their lives become more complicated than they anticipated.4 February 2018
- This feels like I needed to grow up watching it to like it....and not think it's very very annoying and the southern accents gave me a headache
- Enough originality to make me laugh, making it just watchable
- Apparently I don't care for most early Coen Bros...other than Blood Simple
- DirectorWim WendersStarsBruno GanzSolveig DommartinOtto SanderAn angel tires of his purely ethereal life of merely overseeing the human activity of Berlin's residents, and longs for the tangible joys of physical existence when he falls in love with a mortal.5 February 2018
- I cannot overstate the greatness...this is why I watch films...feels silly typing it but it could be one of the greatest pieces of art ever made
- eavesdropping on thoughts as an angel and yearning to be human, I wanted to cry a dozen times when I realized the magic wasn't going to run out for 2 hours...I'd watch it right now again
- I evaluated my past and future and I learned and I was moved, the images....so many images that will always be with me...and the music...I need to know more about Nick Cave....every sense was stimulated
- The only thing I can imagine improving is that the voyeuristic angel somewhat creepily ends up with her....I think the age difference and lopsided looks make it hard to be on his side, but I don't need to be on anyone's side, that doesn't even matter, so it's a small thing
- I cannot wait to watch this again with someone that loves it
- DirectorMasaki KobayashiStarsKô MishimaTorahiko HamadaKeiko KishiA group of rank-and-file Japanese soldiers are jailed for crimes against humanity, themselves victims of a nation refusing to bear its burdens as a whole.6 February 2018
- Kobayashi Eclipse set by Janus
- Another excellent one by Kobayashi
