After hours of brushing up his dusty best clothes, Alkali Ike finally rigs himself out and, with a freshly washed rubber collar roped about his neck, chases into the ranch house where he finds the lovely Sophie seated at the organ, surrounded by the boys, who are industriously screeching their heads off in an endeavor to sing. Alkali Ike vainly attempts to elbow his way through and get a sight of the fair Sophie, but in vain, and is finally thrown out of the house by the boys. But his wooing is not in vain, and the next morning a motorcyclist arrives at the ranch and stops for a while. Alkali immediately sees possibilities in the machine, buys it outright, and invites Sophie to take a spin with him along the trail. She delightedly agrees, and then the fun begins. Of course Alkali loses control of the mechanism and the wildest of rides ensues. Finally the machine lands in the creek and there we leave Alkali in the hands of the enraged Sophie, who does things good and plenty to him.

- DirectorHarold M. ShawStarsWilliam WadsworthMrs. William BechtelAugustus PhillipsThe Giltons are next-door neighbors to the Biltons. The houses are exactly alike and adjoin each other; the back yards are not even separated by a fence. Gilton is a crabbed old money-maker and childless; his wife has grown submissive through years of continual nagging. The Biltons are a happy family of seven; poverty and scrimping have not soured them. The struggle to maintain his wife and the little ones has left Bilton threadbare, but the loving wife and five pairs of little arms that creep around his neck each morning and night are worth the fight. The fact that old Gilton fumes and fusses about the children sometimes stepping over the line of his back-yard bothers him only insofar as he dislikes discord. When Gilton's dog is poisoned, Bilton is as sorry as though it had been his own, yet old Gilton accuses him of being the poisoner. Even the heartbroken sobs of Bilton's sweet little daughter Cora Cordelia over the death of her canine playfellow fail to convince the crusty old man. When the grocer's boy delivers Gilton's order to Mrs. Bilton and she cooks the dinner thinking her husband sent the things, Gilton is almost ready to commit murder. As Christmas approaches, the Biltons are hard-pressed but give their little store to the children to buy presents, telling them that Santa Claus is too poor to leave them a turkey. On Christmas Eve, old Gilton staggers home in a blizzard, the turkey for Christmas dinner under his arm. On the porch that leads to the twin doors of his house and the Biltons', a terrific gust of wind and snow closes his eyes, and, horror of horrors, he enters the home of the hated neighbor. Blinded and cold, his entire figure snow-covered, he steps into the midst of the Biltons, gathered about the table laden with the cheap presents and listening open-mouthed to Bilton reading "The Night Before Christmas." The children's vision of cheery Santa is rudely interrupted by Gilton's snow-covered figure. To them, he is the real Santa Claus. In a beautiful closing scene, old Gilton's flinty eyes fill with tears and the breach between the families is closed as though the spirit of Santa Claus himself had welded it.

- DirectorÉtienne ArnaudHerbert BlachéStarsRobert FrazerBarbara TennantAlec B. FrancisMaid Marian is represented in the cast as the daughter of Old Merwyn and it is at his house that the action begins. He introduces a rich gentleman as her prospective husband after displaying jewelry which the formal suitor has sent ahead with his declaration of love. Friar Tuck appears under the pretense of asking for alms and warns Marian that Robin is waiting at their meeting place. She manages to escape during a parley between her father and her future husband, Guy de Gisbourne, and keeps her appointment. She is discovered, however, and her angry father, backed up by the unheroic Guy, protests valiantly against the clandestine love-making, but formidable Robin is only amused. The bold outlaw is so careless about his personal safety that he eventually falls into an ambush prepared by Guy de Gisbourne, is captured and is bound to a tree while they set off in search of the Sheriff of Nottingham to obtain a formal warrant for Robin Hood's arrest. Marian hurries to where Little John is repairing swords at his forge and finds besides the brawny blacksmith Will Scarlet and Alan-a-Dale. As soon as these members of Robin Hood's band hear of their leader's plight they go to his rescue, free him and organize for revenge. Guy, meanwhile, repairs to the Sheriff of Nottingham's house, where he obtains the warrant he desires. He next visits Marian's father and uses his legal instrument to such advantage that he is promised the hand of the maid as soon as he arrests the outlaw. Guy gets busy. He sets out with a body of armed men expecting to find his prey tied to the tree, but is drawn into an ambush like that he prepared for Robin Hood. Robin and his men fall upon the invaders of their natural domain, drag them from their horses and bind them to the trees in the same manner as their leader had been treated. They then decide to capture the Sheriff. This bold plan fails when it is on the verge of success. The old gentleman wakes just in time to sound an alarm, which summons the guards and the entire band of outlaws is captured. Maid Marian effects a second rescue with greater difficulty, as Robin and his men had been incarcerated in a prison. She and a bunch of her pretty girl friends flirt with the sentinels and lure them away from their posts, while the outlaws scale the wall and descend to the other side by means of a rope secretly furnished for that purpose. The Sheriff now puts a price on Robin's head, while the latter buries himself deeper in the forest and gathers a powerful band of recruits. The second part opens at a wayside tavern near Nottingham. The Sheriff of Nottingham, Guy de Gisbourne, and Old Merwyn are in conspiracy, Friar Tuck watching them closely from another table while pretending to be drunk, and into this plotting comes a new character, a majestic stranger of formidable aspect. The newcomer is none other than Richard Coeur de Leon, the King himself, whose adventures are so entrancingly told by Sir Walter Scott. For some reason or another, not satisfactorily explained, the three gentlemen engaged in conspiring propose to capture the mysterious stranger. Without suspecting their evil devices the mysterious unknown seats himself and calls for refreshment. Friar Tuck draws near and warns the stranger. The latter secretly draws his sword and laughs at the idea of danger. Presently the Sheriff signals soldiers who are awaiting his call and they pour into the tavern. Their attack is directed against the stranger and some lively sword play follows. He backs up to the wall, cuts and thrusts in magnificent style and is materially aided by the monk. They do effective work, accomplishing marvels with their weapons, but are about to be overcome when Tuck draws the stranger away through a secret hiding-place and they seek safety in flight. The belligerent Friar conducts his new friend through the forest to the secret camp of the outlaw and there a great feast is prepared of venison and other game. Robin Hood gives up his own tent to the accommodation of the stranger when the latter retires for the night. Next day Robin and the unknown have a friendly bout with swords in which the famous outlaw is disarmed. He exclaims in amazement, "Only one man in all England could disarm me." "Who may that be?" asked the stranger. "Our Most Gracious King," replied Robin. Then Richard Coeur de Leon drops his long coat and exclaims: "I am the King!" This is Robin's opportunity. He and his band acclaim the monarch, while Richard the Lion-Hearted seems to enter into the spirit of their calling. When they depart on a secret mission, attired as monks, he gives them his sanction and bids them godspeed. They are on their way to abduct the beautiful Marian. Some lively adventures follow, but they get the girl and carry her away to their forest retreat, where she is wedded to her true lover by Friar Tuck. He performs the ceremony beneath the tree on whose trunk has been fashioned a cross made of daisies. All is not over. The persecutors are still busy. The Sheriff and Guy and Merwyn with all their soldiers appear at the wedding of Maid Marian and lay violent hands upon Robin. Now does the King advance and say, "Hold, that lady is Robin's wife!" In vain Merwyn urges that Marian is his daughter and that the King shall be informed of this indignity practiced upon his family. The monarch reveals his identity and orders Robin's men to clear his forest of the intruders, Sheriff and all. They do this with no reluctance and the play is over; virtue triumphs in the person of the noble lawbreaker, while vice, typified then as now by those who make and interpret the laws, is punished as it deserves.

- DirectorColin CampbellStarsHobart BosworthTom SantschiHerbert RawlinsonPart One. The first reel opens with the departure of the ship Pharaon from Marseilles, with Dantes and Danglars, the man who later incomes his deadly rival, as supercargo. During the voyage the captain dies. At the moment of his death he gives the charge of the ship to Dantes, and also entrusts to him the secret message to Napoleon, with the imperial ring which will admit him to private audience with the illustrious exile. Dantes succeeds in his mission to Napoleon, and sails back to France with a communication from Napoleon to Noirtier, who dispatched the original missive. On arrival at Marseilles, Danglars tries to get the command of the Pharaon away from Dantes, but Morrel, the ship owner, is well satisfied with Dantes, and gives him his captain's papers. Dantes, after an affectionate reunion with his old father, visits his sweetheart, Mercedes. Fernand, a fiery young fisherman, who has been trying to win her for himself, is much incensed at Dantes' return. He discovers Danglars' enmity for Dantes, and conspires with him and several habitues of the Reserve Inn to bring trumped up charges against Dantes. Their nefarious scheme succeeds so well that Dantes is torn from a jolly prenuptial feast by the magistrate's guards and hustled from the distracted Mercedes' side to a dungeon in the Chateau D'If, in Marseilles harbor. Part Two. The second reel depicts the awful years spent in the dungeon by Dantes. He grows grizzled, ragged and unkempt in the solitude. He manages finally to get into communication, through a secret passage, with a fellow prisoner, an old Abbe, who is being persecuted by political and religious enemies. The Abbe is an eccentric person, whose one thought in life is the recovery of immense buried riches, the key to the finding of which he holds in the form of an old chart. Finally the Abbe comes to die, and entrusts the chart to Dantes. After the discovery of the Abbe's corpse by the guards, and while the latter have gone out to fetch shots with which to weight the sack in which they have wrapped the Abbe preparatory to casting him into the sea, Dantes manages to drag the corpse into his own cell and substitute himself for the remains. He is cast from the parapet of the castle in the sack which is supposed to contain the dead body. He has supplied himself with a knife beforehand, and as the sack sinks Dantes rips it open and swims to an isolated rock, from the top of which he shouts, in his exultation over the escape: "The World is Mine!" Part Three. The third reel opens with the rescue of Dantes from the rock by a smuggler's schooner. During the cruise of the schooner, Dantes induces the captain to put him ashore on the isle of Monte Cristo, the spot named in the Abbe's chart as the depository of the hidden treasure. He discovers the exact cave and unearths the treasure. He makes his way to the mainland and lives in luxury among the Arabs, falling in love with the beautiful slave girl, Haidee. Captain Albert, of the French army, gets into difficulties during an attack upon his troops by the Arabs and Dantes, by his daring, saves his life. Albert, on taking his departure from Dantes' tent, thanks him profusely and invites him in Paris. Dantes, who has seen something familiar in the captain's face, starts when he reads his card, but promises, without comment, to attend the reception at Albert's. Dantes, in disguise, and known as the Count of Monte Cristo, visits Paris with Haidee. There he comes face to face with his old sweetheart, Mercedes, who has married his enemy, Fernand. Mercedes informs him that the young captain, Albert, is his own son. The final scene is a desperate duel between Dantes and Fernand, in which Fernand is killed.

At this juncture Laurento beats his way through the flames and scales the wall, and, picking up the frantic maiden, jumps to the mesh of telegraph wires outside the window. Carrying his burden over the fragile wires, he saves her amid the frantic cheers of the populace. The grateful mayor makes him a welcome guest, and he soon wins the heart of the young girl, but he has yet to obtain the father's consent. He worries continually about this problem, and not even at home can he rest in peace, for Ula Kiri, who feels that her beloved friend is sliding away from her, keeps tormenting him with jealousy and mockery. At last he plucks up his courage and goes to the mayor. The latter is friendly to the young man, but he compels the rope dancer to leave with a vague promise for the future. If circumstances, should alter. A capital idea strikes the young man to obtain money. He arranges to do a rope dance to the church tower. The circus director is delighted with the idea. The great day arrives, and the people of the town gather around the church. The rope dancer cannot forget Erna's sorrowful eyes and pale face as he walks along the flaccid rope towards the dizzy height. A snake has escaped and its body bars the way to the entrance to the tower. The snake tamer has, in her mad jealousy, forgotten all about her duties, and this negligence now proves fatal. Erna implores her in vain to call back the reptile, as she is the only one that can do it, but Ula Kiri will not listen to her in her storm of jealousy and hatred. But Erna overcomes all difficulties. Her great love teaches her what to do, and thus she saves her sweetheart. The mayor can no longer withhold his consent to the marriage and the same evening the Flying Circus goes away to the other regions, leaving a happy couple in the country town.

One of her begging trips brings Gerta to the attention of a young man named Alm Stoddard, He becomes interested in the pretty child and upon learning her story is horrified. The police are notified. They arrest her supposed father, but Sarah Anderson escapes. Little Gerta is adopted by Alm's mother and grows to be a beautiful young woman. Lieutenant Wiles challenges Alm to a duel and in the encounter Alm is wounded slightly. Gerta, frightened by the trouble she has caused, disappears, leaving a note begging the Stoddards to forgive her seeming ingratitude. Some years later a grand opera star, Mlle. Hauser, has taken the public by storm. Among her admirers is Alm Stoddard, although he is too fainthearted to write to her or tell her that he knows her to be little Gerta. She, from behind the footlights, has recognized him but, fearing he has not forgiven her, makes no sign of recognition. Another man, in constant attendance at the opera, is Councilor Van Seydling, who has long since believed his daughter dead. By a strange coincidence Sarah Anderson is employed as Gerta's maid. She has not reformed any and when she steals Mlle, Hauser's handbag she extracts a picture of a very little girl. Looking at the picture Sarah suddenly realizes that Mlle. Hauser is none other than little Gerta. That evening the audience is assembled when a fire breaks out. In the panic that follows Alm is the only one who remembers Gerta. At the risk of his life he brings the unconscious girl out of danger. At the corner drug store Sarah Anderson, mortally injured, is dying. She bares the story of her life and among the listeners is Councilor Von Seydling. The memory of his misdeeds strikes terror to his heart. Van Seydling hurries out and, finding his daughter in the arms of Alm, begs her to forgive him. The girl is mystified, but a little explaining clears the situation. Following custom, Alm asks her father for her hand. Von Seydling asks Gerta to decide and she, clinging to Alm, smiles her contentment.

Max makes valiant attempts to conquer his aversion to water, both on the shore and later, on returning home, by experiments with a home-made shower bath; but his efforts are fruitless. He is dining that evening with some friends. Fish is served, and the host comes upon a ring suspended from a ribbon. Max, greatly excited, snatches it from his host, empties the contents of the water decanter on his own head, and, after embracing his friends, takes his departure. Max seeks Dora and presents her with the ring. He recounts his imaginary adventures, and she embraces him warmly.
