- DirectorHerbert PolesieStarsTom HowardLulu McConnellHarry McNaughtonThe first of a very short series, since it would become a TV series in 1949, based on the radio program that ran on CBS from 1944 through 1949. The premise of the program was intended as a satire and parody version of the "intellecutual" quiz shows on radio in the 40's, such as "Information Please" and "The Quiz Kids." The show---radio,film and TV (for those who seem to be convinced that the TV program popped up on its own in 1949 and there were no other incarnations)--- was "emceed", as it was, by long-time Vaudevillian Tom Howard, whose function was to ask a simple question of the panelists, i. e., ..."from what kind of mines do we get gold," "who came first,Henry VIII or Henry I", "what do the letters 'U.S.'stand for on United States mail boxes" and such. No question in the history---radio, film, TV---of the show was ever answered correctly by panelists George Sherlton, an old vaudeville-hoofer pardner of Howard's; Lulu McConnell, a performer with a sawblade voice who pre-dated all of the Booths and Barrymores in show business; and Harry McNaughton, a Britisher who looked down on johnny-come-latelys such as Stan Laurel and Charlie Chaplin. The panel usually spent an amazing amount of time trying to determine just exactly what the question was before taking off on tangents not remotely connected to the question. "It Pays To Be Ignorant"---on radio-films and TV-- was somewhat of a family affair as it was written by Howard's daughter Ruth and her husband Bob Howell, while Tom Jr. orchestrated the music.

- In the opening scene we see the daughter of wealthy parents in the drawing room awaiting the arrival of her music teacher. The teacher enters and immediately begins to give his pupil a lesson on the violin. The girl is in love with her instructor, and tired of the lesson, lays aside her violin, and a few minutes later when the father enters the room he discovers the two young lovers in a fond embrace. The father orders the violinist from the house, and the daughter refusing to be parted from her sweetheart, gives up her wealthy home and departs to become the bride of the poor musician. One year later we find the girl, now a mother, in the attic home of the musician, where she is surrounded by poverty. In reading the daily paper she finds an ad, inserted by her father requesting her to return to her old home, but forbidding her to bring her husband with her. She decides to return, and writing a note to her husband, which she leaves on the table, gathers her baby in her arms and starts from the room when her husband enters. He implores her to remain with him, but to no avail, and she returns to her father's home. Eighteen years later the musician, without funds and food, takes his violin to a pawn shop where he pledges it, in order to secure much needed funds. On his way home he rescues a young lady from the hands of a footpad. The girl is exceedingly thankful and asks for his card. In extracting the card from his pocket, the pawn ticket falls to the sidewalk unnoticed by him. As he walks away the young girl picks up the pawn ticket and decides to redeem the violin, in order to show her appreciation to her rescuer. She takes the violin to the attic home of the musician, finding her way there by means of the card he has presented her with. He then notices the ring on her finger, which proves to be the wedding ring of her mother. After a short conversation he discovers the young girl to be his daughter, who tells him that his wife's father, who many years ago ejected him from his house, is now dead. He agrees to accompany her to her home where she shows him into the same drawing room which held so many fond memories for him, and going to her mother's apartments, she entices her into the drawing room where her husband is sitting. One glance is sufficient, and they are soon in each other's arms. The picture ends showing the father, mother and daughter, a happy, reunited family.

At the Wagon Wheel Cafe, he encounters a couple of vagrants, Curly and Larry, who are just a step or two ahead of Sheriff Zeke, who have won some money at the roulette wheel and they immediately become prime prospects for backing Shorty's nebulous prospecting scheme. Meanwhile, June McGuire and Betty Vale, whose singing act has failed at the café, are packing for New York. Shorty, who has fallen for Betty, persuades the girls to go to the ranch. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Rusty has returned with intentions of selling the ranch.
