- DirectorJames MangoldStarsHugh JackmanPatrick StewartDafne KeenIn a future where mutants are nearly extinct, an elderly and weary Logan leads a quiet life. But when Laura, a mutant child pursued by scientists, comes to him for help, he must get her to safety. While it is a hard emotional film to watch, by far the best film of the franchise. That it failed to receive a best picture or supporting actor nom for Patrick Stuart are evidenced we still have a long way to go toward these movies being taken serious.
- DirectorTim MillerStarsRyan ReynoldsMorena BaccarinT.J. MillerA wisecracking mercenary gets experimented on and becomes immortal yet hideously scarred, and sets out to track down the man who ruined his looks.Role and actor perfectly matched in Marvel's first foray into R-Rated movies. From the 4th wall breaking to the over the top comedy, action and blood, it is a feast for all the senses.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsPatrick StewartHugh JackmanHalle BerryWhen anti-mutant Colonel William Stryker kidnaps Professor X and attacks his school, the X-Men must ally with their archenemy Magneto to stop him.Being a stronger action film than its predecessor, X2 is a perfect blue-print for the modern comic films to duplicate. More action and more intensity, it is everything a sequel should always be and more.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsPatrick StewartIan McKellenHugh JackmanThe X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants.A decade after X2, Days of Future Past, like X2, improved on its predecessor and brought forth a winning combination of beloved original characters/actors and new. Time traveling can be a dodgy scenario, but it is done wonderfully here.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsPatrick StewartHugh JackmanIan McKellenIn a world where mutants (evolved super-powered humans) exist and are discriminated against, two groups form for an inevitable clash: the supremacist Brotherhood, and the pacifist X-Men.Kick-starting the current comic to film genre, more a character study than action film, X-Men sought to be a little more introspective. While this works in the film's favor with perfectly cast characters, the lack of any substantial action segments keeps this film from being higher in this list.
- DirectorDavid LeitchStarsRyan ReynoldsJosh BrolinMorena BaccarinFoul-mouthed mutant mercenary Wade Wilson (a.k.a. Deadpool) assembles a team of fellow mutant rogues to protect a young boy with abilities from the brutal, time-traveling cyborg Cable. While it isn't quite the breath of R-Rated fresh air as the original, DP2 continues Reynolds' ownership of the role while adding some characters and actors who expand the universe to new, fun and over the top action violence level.
- DirectorSimon KinbergStarsJames McAvoyMichael FassbenderJennifer LawrenceJean Grey begins to develop incredible powers that corrupt and turn her into a Dark Phoenix, causing the X-Men to have to decide if her life is worth more than all of humanity.Contrary to the critical and overall audience response, I feel this is one of the better action films in the franchise while also one of the most consistent in tone. Sophie Turner shines in this entry, effectively showing the turmoil going on within Jean. The only real negative I can say about the film is the sidelining of Quicksilver after the 2nd act.
- DirectorMatthew VaughnStarsJames McAvoyMichael FassbenderJennifer LawrenceIn the 1960s, superpowered humans Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr work together to find others like them, but Erik's vengeful pursuit of an ambitious mutant who ruined his life causes a schism to divide them.Reintroducing us to the core characters of the original 2000 film, First Class once again brings together top-notch actors. A story that is a little messy, none the less entertaining and fun. Kevin Bacon offers up one of the better villains in the X-Men universe.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsJames McAvoyMichael FassbenderJennifer LawrenceIn the 1980s the X-Men must defeat an ancient all-powerful mutant, En Sabah Nur, who intends to thrive through bringing destruction to the world.I rank this higher than The Wolverine, which may be blasphemy to some, but I think this is a solid outing. Quick Silver gets a bigger role this time and some nice surprises. Recent viewings cements its place where it is now.
- DirectorJames MangoldStarsHugh JackmanWill Yun LeeTao OkamotoWolverine comes to Japan to meet an old friend whose life he saved years ago, and gets embroiled in a conspiracy involving yakuza and mutants. After a less than stellar Origin outing, Jackman comes back with a grittier and more comics accurate entry for Wolverine. The finale brings the film down otherwise it would rank higher.
- DirectorBrett RatnerStarsPatrick StewartHugh JackmanHalle BerryThe human government develops a cure for mutations, and Jean Grey becomes a darker uncontrollable persona called the Phoenix who allies with Magneto, causing escalation into an all-out battle for the X-Men.This film gets a lot of hate that I don't feel is deserved. Yes, loads of new characters with frustrating little development and less focus on Dark Phoenix. But it has some of the best action of the original films and a wonderful score with performances from the core who are still strong. Not near the train wreck that many want to say it is.
- DirectorGavin HoodStarsHugh JackmanLiev SchreiberRyan ReynoldsThe early years of James Logan, featuring his rivalry with his brother Victor Creed, his service in the special forces team Weapon X, and his experimentation into the metal-lined mutant Wolverine.Origins, while definitely hampered by bad CGI, too many franchise winks and a horrible intro of Deadpool, features strong performances from Jackman and Schreiber, who provides the best realization of Sabertooth yet.
