Still viewing the films...
Straight from Millcreek Entertainment 50 dvd's boxset 'Drive In movie classics'. I'll try to review them all and put them more or less in order of preference.
On this boxset you find often a movie whichquality is to low, so I switched to youtube to get it from other sources when possible (just to see the image and hear the sound sometimes). It will be mentionned.

- DirectorPeter CarterStarsHal HolbrookLawrence DaneRobin GammellFive doctors on a wilderness outing are stalked by disfigured, crazed killers.A gripping introduction made me sad about the despicable audio and image of this film so I looked at my new best friend for little film : youtube. A more correct version is there and I had the pleasure to experience such a beautiful story of survival. I had trouble hearing everything nonetheless and some parts of the story remain a bit dark for me (I have some doubts of interpretation for the end). My ear is good but the sound from these films is pretty crappy. Hal Holbrook gives a amazing performance as the leader of the pack, and the last man standing. All in all, I think this is a very strong movie, the kind that should be restored and really looked into, for it is very subtle and silent about its meaning.
- DirectorJack ConradStarsDub TaylorJack ConradRita GeorgeAn ex-convict stock-car driver turns to crime to fund his escape from local bigots in rural Georgia.Country Blue is the ultimate movie that must have been seen by experts and redone better. I'm think Cohen Brothers or any cinematographer who could be working his style. Of course the film is technically uneven but I truly feel the decoration, the cinematography and even the storytelling is very strong. I like the humor of it (once again the Cohen Brothers must eat these kind of film all the time) and the acting is profound (Jack Conrad is playing the title role and creates such a good chemistry with its actress). The Bonny and Clyde story works perfectly thanks to the couple very strong performance. I know from a Tallahassee article, she stayed his wife till his death in september 2013. Actually 90% of this film is good, sometimes very good and it's hard not to notice it's the director's only opus. He could have been great if you consider how many films looking like this nowadays are made and praised as homages. In his own words 30 years later after making it 'it holds up'. Congratulations and RIP Jack Conrad.
- DirectorArthur RobersonStarsDurey MasonSandra AlexandraJeff BurtonYoung woman quickly realizes that prostitution is a harsh reality.Once again, the format cuts you off from a good portion. The alternate titles for this film are "Black Hooker" and "Don't leave go of my hand". This is the director's only film and you can tell he had something in his gut, all maybe but coherent storyboarding. It didn't matter because I felt the movie was very strong, dealing theatrically then cinematographically about very strong issues. There are some tricks of cinema I enjoyed watching, the alternate cuts, the ellipse to go 10 years in the future and the ending which play on colors and doomed images. It's not to watch if you only watch movies well presented, this is pretty crappy technically but with lots of ideas. On the imdb page you will find a reviewer who knew the director and tells how the premiere went.
- DirectorManuel CañoStarsAldo SambrellTanyeka StadlerAlexander AbrahanThe mummy of long dormant, but powerful Caribbean voodoo priest Gatanebo gets revived on a luxury South Seas ocean liner and proceeds to terrorize the passengers.Voodoo Black Exorcist is edited in such a way that you can either chose to laugh at it or to admire the experimentations. I know I did admire a lot of thing (especially the opening credit sequence) and the voodoo character. There are lots of lessons to take from this film because it never fails at its experimentations, and sometimes dares to take its path fearlessly. The cyclic ideas and the speech of the mummy are very interesting.
- DirectorDavid PaulsenJohn Mason KirbyStarsChristopher AllportJim DoerrDavid GaleSeveral couples head upstate to the country to watch a boat being built. Unfortunately they are stalked by a murderer behind a ghoulish mask.Funniest perchman to ever work on a film. I think he was playing Waldo or something. Sometimes it's not that obvious because he's hidden, but he always shows his mic everywhere. That was my favorite part although I have to say the actors are extremely believable even with that perchman. Lots of skins will be shown (one in a short I won't forget any time soon, with amazing legs) and there are some nice moments.
- DirectorBill BrameStarsFrank DeKovaPaul HarrisFrances E. WilliamsA numbers king pin tries to stay in business as the mafia and police close in around him. This film has a lot going on for him. It gave me a better look into blackexploitation and especially gangstas's story, with surname of crime boss as Pacha and all that stuff. I don't think it's a great movie, but it definitely has its moments, the ending being a good example of twists. It made me understand better movies like Jackie Brown and QT references to blackxploitation.
- DirectorSteven Hilliard SternStarsBob DishyJoanna BarnesBill DanaOliver is in trouble. He's been caught embezzling money from his father's company, and unless he can pay back the $250,000 he took (which he can't), he will be fired from his job, arrested, and probably sent to jail.A very jewish, loud acted story, a bit reminiscent of Bill Murray (but before him obviously --> and maybe he finluenced comedy even before its time). I thought it was very funny at start for other reasons than in the end since the last part is a big clownesque gag, not being interested in the murder of the wife anymore. But I'm glad I saw it.
- DirectorFrancisco Lara PolopStarsAnalía GadéIda GalliAndrés ResinoA couple lost in thick fog, take refuge in an old mansion next to a cemetery, and strange things start to happen.I have been very impressed with the introduction of it and how the horror atmosphere is being set. It's very fluid, very controled and very effective. The first part of the movie indeed deserves a reckoning. After that it's quite pleasant but not that interesting.
- DirectorBoaz DavidsonStarsYftach KatzurYvonne MikloshZachi NoyTeenage romance, parties and sex in 1950s Tel Aviv. Music is at the core of the lives of these teenagers. This is a comedy about three friends.Otzim Kavua has many titles so I tried to find a better version of the film. It seems they transfered it wrong as you don't get all the frame, meaning everything that's left or right of the screen is cut off. I was hoping youtube would help me with the several titles (Greasy Kids Stuff, la Boum américaine, Going Steady) but couldn't fin a better version. So I kept this one and thought it was pretty cute as a film, with some good oneliners ('she's from a good family' joke) and a bit surreal at times (the gang bang ?).
- DirectorAnthony PageStarsRichard BurtonDominic GuardDavid BradleyTwo boys try to drive a strict priest mad with their confessed sins at a boarding school in England.More of a twist film than a faith film, a thriller kind of like. Richard Burton gave a fine performance and the film really grips your attention and make you think how all this was possible. It clearly deserves to be remembered.
- DirectorAlan GibsonStarsChristopher LeePeter CushingMichael ColesIn 1974, Professor Lorrimer Van Helsing investigates a satanic cult on behalf of Scotland Yard, only to discover a plot by Count Dracula to commit global genocide.First time I saw a Dracula's Christopher Lee movie and I think it's number 7 or so. It was very well played by Peter Cushing (better known for his role in Star Wars : A New hope). It really felt like a episode of Freddy Krueger coming back for the tenth times and dying in five minutes afterwards when he's there. It was enjoyable but getting a bit dumb (Dracula trying to destroy the human race ?)
- DirectorBrian Trenchard-SmithStarsEdward John StazakJohn StantonJames RichardsA martial-arts expert goes after a criminal gang and its boss, who were responsible for the death of his partner. From Brian Trenchard-Smith, who is very lazy on the thematic but very good on the storyboarding. I liked most of it, there are lots of muscles, nice hips, lots of fight, but mostly Brian Trenchard Smith little ideas of directing are what makes it work. It's sad he never saw beyond this for his direction career.
- DirectorSergio GriecoStarsHelmut BergerMarisa MellRichard HarrisonIn Italy, escaped sadistic killer Nanni Vitali and his henchmen terrorize the populace and seek revenge against those responsible for Vitali's incarceration.Once again, you'll find a different format on youtube, which doesn't cut off the widescreen. On the dvd, sometimes you don't even see the character speaking. I thought the movie was pretty straight to the point. This is the story of Mad Dog, nothing else, and it's pretty strong.
- DirectorAmando de OssorioStarsMaria PerschyJack TaylorBárbara ReyThe living corpses of the Satan-worshiping Knights Templar hunt for human victims in a 16th century galleon.Improbability at its most absurd. Models trying a stunt with a boat in the sea meet a ghost ship. No elements mixes in this mess of pure inanity, making you wonder what in the world did they smoke when they wrote this. But if you agree with the scientist character who speeches about facts only to show he knows everything about ghosts and zombie and exorcism, then you might guess they actually knew what they were doing, it wasn't just an accident. Then it's not enough funny but still very cheesy (the creeping sound are really good). As usual it has it's pile of nice skins and woman screaming no performances. The end is a boomerand twist and in the end it wasn't that depleasant to watch.
- DirectorAlberto NegrinStarsFabio TestiChristine KaufmannIvan DesnyA detective investigating the murder of a teenage girl begins to focus his suspicions on the three girlfriends of the victim, who call themselves "The Inseparables."Not being a fan of detective stories, I didn't find a lot of interests in this but it's not to say it was bad. The twist at the end can be seen as quite interesting (and explain the title quite well).
- DirectorHerb WallersteinStarsBo SvensonYvette MimieuxRobert LoganA Colorado ski resort is besieged by a sub-human beast that commits brutal murders on the slopes. There's this rule about low budget horror that you don't get to see the monster till the end, but it takes new ground when you don't even see it at all. I don't know what was the budget on this but probably not much than my nephew's pocket money. I can't say I hated it, but except one shot of the monster hand grapping somebody, I can honestly say there's nothing to say about this film. Special mention to Bo Svenson who had a great career and even played in Kill Bill 2 and Inglorious Basterds.
- DirectorChia-Yun YangKaren YangStarsHsiao-Fen LuAlan TamFu-Mei ChangA young woman is released from prison and starts her life over. Getting a job at a newspaper, she tries to settle in. When bizarre incidents occur, the woman suspects that someone has a vendetta against her.
- DirectorEdmund PurdomStarsEdmund PurdomAlan LakeBelinda MayneSomebody with very little Christmas spirit is killing anyone in a Santa suit one London holiday season, and Scotland Yard has to stop him before he makes his exploits an annual tradition. This is a serial killer-I saw a woman naked when I was 8-and now I want to kill something (and of course I have a brother too). But the funny twist is that the serial killer here only wants to kill santas (I won't say exactly why ofc), because santas are evil. At start it's a real mess, and you only laugh at the idea of all these silly deaths scenes (like everytime a Santas is coming to town) and I couldn't say if the movie was trying to be fun. Then at some point it starts to be a story (very late) and bring some food, if ill, on the table. Not praising it, I liked : the staircase scene with the chain, the hot girl behind the glass dialogue, the abduction and the christmas scene; even when ill conceived it gives you some cinematic value.
- DirectorRobert Vincent O'NeilStarsPeter CarpenterMaria De AragonVicki PetersA sex-crazed nympho helps speed along her father's death so she can use the inheritance to help out her depraved boyfriend. Most of the time, it's nothing more than a Derrick episode without the detective. What I kept and made me laugh (except the lots of skins you see) is the combination of music and scenes, some sort of wah-wah pedals funky/soul to show death and solo hendrixian solo for sex. It was a bit fun and bizarre. Then came the ending and I can't say if there's a twist or not, because it's too bizarre once again, but it's presented as a twist and is a bit surprising. I don't know if there is a lot to interpret but maybe there is I don't know. It's like the ending of 'Ma nuit chez Maude' I couldn't figure out what the twist was but there seemed to be something.
- DirectorOsvaldo CiviraniStarsCarroll BakerGeorge HiltonStephen BoydThe theft of jewels and mistaken identity complicate the life of Mary causing her to become the target of a vicious gang of criminals in this giallo crime thriller. Two weeks after seeing it I don't have no memories of what it was about, except that they were some beautiful legs and mini-shorts. I guess it wasn't that good.
- DirectorSam NewfieldStarsBuster CrabbeFifi D'OrsayBarton MacLaneWhen a treasure hunter seeks a downed airplane in the jungles of Africa, he encounters one of the passenger's young daughter, now fully grown, and with a gorilla protector.A very old film and a very odd one. The premise of the white witch living with a gorilla has its merit and the development is not unpleasant (Buster Crabbe is a pretty strong actor for the time.) It seems the director spent a lot of times making movies with gorillas and monkeys but the strange thing is that it never develops what its setting could have developed. When the gorilla dies, you don't even see and you don't even understand what's going on. This film could need a remake.
- DirectorWilliam J. Hole Jr.StarsLinda ChristianRobert AldaAriadne WelterA man is haunted by visions of a beautiful woman. When he finally meets her, he winds up involved in a Satanic cult.Felt just like a little Twilight episode, where the dark arts are mixed with black people dancing, little dolls and tum-tums. All in all, not very interesting.
- DirectorBill RebaneStarsDean WestMeredith OrrDavid Alan SmithThree bumbling criminals have been trying to get their hands on the computerized control system of Mr. Twister, a talking monster truck with a mind of its own. This film is definitely crappy, its esthetic repulsive (as far as I could tell from a Millcreek entertainment dvd). Nonetheless, once you get to the first chase scene you start to realize this z-movie is actually trying to accomplish something, helped by a three stoogian lead with at least one good actor. Then you go deeper into the plot : you discover the monster truck, Twister, blessed with an IA given by a surrealistically sexy 20 year old to his boyfriend for his championship of Monster Truck; a program at first designed to control the monster truck to crush cars in a line. Then the sexy scientist gets taken hostage by the three stooges and next thing you know, a revenge plan appears in the monster truck mind, by love for its creator (she has a voice by then). Improbability ensue. The music has its moments, with classical melodies, junctioned with blues and raw country, even by some Jaws blinks. The film itslef offers some weirdly fine jokes, a la Troma, and then some good storyboarding about nonsensical chase scenes. I couldn't help but fall for some great dialogues and laugh at this mess of morons. The last shot is a shot's dream for any silliness fans. To maintain the poorness of this mess is true, but this could need a remake a-la Cohen brothers. I wouldn't even be suprised if they saw this film and though about it, how better it should have been.
- DirectorFreddie FrancisStarsJack PalanceDiana DorsJulie EgeA nutty antiques dealer starts to sacrifice women to an African idol.
