- CreatorMark FrostDavid LynchStarsKyle MacLachlanSheryl LeeMichael HorsePicks up 25 years after the inhabitants of a quaint northwestern town are stunned when their homecoming queen is murdered.I was really afraid about this one. Who would be returning? What would the story be? How about new characters, would they stack up with the old cast?
Turns out the revival is even better than the original. The vibe is still very much alive, the musical performances are out of this world, it totally holds up plot-wise with the movie and the end of season 2, the new characters fit so well in this world it's like they've lived their life there, seeing an old character is like reconnecting with a long-lost friend, some scenes take forever for no reason and it's brilliant, some plot lines go nowhere and you find yourself yelling at the TV in despair...
The list goes on. Twin Peaks is simply something else. It's an experience. And the revival just raised the bar set by the original run.
I gotta mention the most insane episode of this year, S03E08, which may be responsible for a few strokes. - CreatorScott AlexanderLarry KaraszewskiSarah BurgessStarsSarah PaulsonAnnaleigh AshfordSterling K. BrownAn anthology series centered around America's most notorious crimes and criminals. The story intrigued me (I was too young when it happened) and I heard good things about it.
I was not prepared for something that good. While the story is unbelievable (in a good way), the actors are giving it their all (even when the reception has been lukewarm/mixed like Gooding or Travolta), and quite a few scenes are heart-breaking (Kardashian!). It's excellent. - CreatorDavid BenioffD.B. WeissStarsEmilia ClarkePeter DinklageKit HaringtonNine noble families fight for control over the lands of Westeros, while an ancient enemy returns after being dormant for millennia. It's finally happened. The show has completely and entirely jumped ahead of the books. With a shortened order (7 instead of the usual 10 episodes), the pace is really picking up and no time is wasted. Unfortunately, even though that was what everyone has been asking for since the start, it feels a bit rushed. Some characters are clearly being teleported between episodes (and in some cases even in the same episode), and it all seems to happen too fast.
In any case, the locations are gorgeous, the VFX are top-notch (almost blockbuster-like!), the cast is still on fire, and my heart skipped a beat in more than a few scenes. I mean, S07E04, amirite? - CreatorDan HarmonJustin RoilandStarsChris ParnellSpencer GrammerSarah ChalkeThe fractured domestic lives of a nihilistic mad scientist and his anxious grandson are further complicated by their inter-dimensional misadventures. We waited two years for that, but boy was it worth it. Every episode is brimming with creativity and easter eggs, with emotional scenes, great action, memorable dialogue and catchphrases. PICKLE RICK!
I also rewatched the first two seasons that year. - CreatorMatthew WeinerStarsJon HammElisabeth MossVincent KartheiserA drama about one of New York's most prestigious ad agencies at the beginning of the 1960s, focusing on one of the firm's most mysterious but extremely talented ad executives, Donald Draper. This year, I finally watched the final season. It didn't feel as good as the previous seasons, but it's still amazeballs. Benching Don, reversing the Don-Peggy work relationship, pushing old characters in different directions, the moon landing, etc. There is nothing quite like Mad Men.
- CreatorLarry DavidStarsLarry DavidCheryl HinesJeff GarlinLarry David stars as an over-the-top version of himself in this comedy series that shows how seemingly trivial details of day-to-day life can precipitate a catastrophic chain of events. After six years off the year, I had forgotten how fucking hilarious Larry David really is.
We've watched only five episode of the new season so far, but holy shit was it great. And I've still got five to go, so I'm pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty pretty pretty pretty, pretty happy. - CreatorVince GilliganPeter GouldStarsBob OdenkirkRhea SeehornJonathan BanksThe trials and tribulations of criminal lawyer Jimmy McGill in the years leading up to his fateful run-in with Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. While still not as good as season 1 (at least to me), season 3 was awesome, and it's really starting to connect the dots with Breaking Bad.
Bring on the next one! - CreatorLisa JoyJonathan NolanStarsEvan Rachel WoodJeffrey WrightEd HarrisAt the intersection of the near future and the reimagined past, waits a world in which every human appetite can be indulged without consequence. We've finished watching it early this year after having seen only three episodes in late 2016.
I gotta say, I'm disappointed. A couple of good plot twists happened, the production value of this show is still amazing, but in terms of plot... all of this just for that? They clearly spent too much time drumming up the big update, which was a complete letdown.
It was still very entertaining and I'm eager for next season to begin. - CreatorCharlie BrookerStarsWunmi MosakuMonica DolanDaniel LapaineFeaturing stand-alone dramas -- sharp, suspenseful, satirical tales that explore techno-paranoia -- "Black Mirror" is a contemporary reworking of "The Twilight Zone" with stories that tap into the collective unease about the modern world. We've watched only the first season. The first episode was fun, but the next two were quite simply next-level. This was brilliant and I can't wait to slowly watch the next seasons.
- CreatorJenji KohanStarsTaylor SchillingDanielle BrooksTaryn ManningConvicted of a decade-old crime of transporting drug money, ordinarily law-abiding Piper Chapman is sentenced to 18 months behind bars and quickly discovers the realities of life-changing prison time. We've managed to watch season 3 and 4 this past year.
Shit got real: the new panty business, the new guard from max, a riot, the new prisoners, a hitman for Alex, neonazis, it goes on.
I wasn't really bothered by the whole over-the-top feel of season 4, there were a bunch of new ideas and it made for great entertainment. - CreatorBeau WillimonStarsKevin SpaceyMichel GillRobin WrightA Congressman works with his equally conniving wife to exact revenge on the people who betrayed him.Season 5 dared to do what the previous seasons didn't: break the "one month per episode" rule, and it allowed them to really squeeze every bit of drama out of that prolonged and chock-full-of-surprises election.
While the general plot was still pretty thin and some new additions in the cast felt very forced, it's always a pleasure to spend time with two of the greatest psychopaths in fiction. I'm going to miss the shit out of Frank Underwood. :( - CreatorMark GatissSteven MoffatStarsBenedict CumberbatchMartin FreemanUna StubbsThe quirky spin on Conan Doyle's iconic sleuth pitches him as a "high-functioning sociopath" in modern-day London. Assisting him in his investigations: Afghanistan War vet John Watson, who's introduced to Holmes by a mutual acquaintance. After a couple years of waiting, season 4 finally showed up. After an okay first episode, the game was definetely afoot with the next episodes. Insane plot twist alert! We're not quite up to the level of the first two seasons, but I feel it's a step up compared to the third.
We also watched The Abominable Bride before the last season, you know, the weird Victorian in-between episode; it was a nice try and interesting, but not much more. - CreatorMatt DufferRoss DufferStarsMillie Bobby BrownFinn WolfhardWinona RyderWhen a young boy vanishes, a small town uncovers a mystery involving secret experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and one strange little girl.We watched the first two seasons this year.
The production value is excellent, the 80s mood is spot on, the kids are fun and have great chemistry, season 2 stepped up with new monsters and interesting new characters.
But HOLY SHIT the homages are sometimes so large it's just too much. Half the Eleven scenes in season 1 were nothing short of a complete rip-off of E.T. The whole premise of "E.T. meets the Goonies" has already been done a decade ago with Super 8, and their best idea was to start season 2 with a rip-off from the kidnapping scene from CE3K.
It was still quite a fun ride, even though the El episode got close to a trainwreck. - CreatorJohn AltschulerMike JudgeDave KrinskyStarsThomas MiddleditchT.J. MillerJosh BrenerFollows the struggle of Richard Hendricks, a Silicon Valley engineer trying to build his own company called Pied Piper. This season didn't feel quite as good as the previous ones. It's still funny as hell and they really went in new directions, which is great. I'm afraid that without Erlich, the show will lose some of its appeal.
- CreatorDavid CraneMarta KauffmanStarsJennifer AnistonCourteney CoxLisa KudrowFollows the personal and professional lives of six twenty to thirty year-old friends living in the Manhattan borough of New York City. We've watched season 1 (again for me) this year.
It's dated, sure... but it's still loads of fun. Even though not of it is credible, it's totally watchable. Nine seasons to go! Oh and bonus points for the monkey. - CreatorTrey ParkerMatt StoneBrian GradenStarsTrey ParkerMatt StoneIsaac HayesFollows the misadventures of four irreverent grade-schoolers in the quiet, dysfunctional town of South Park, Colorado.I finally watched season 1 this year! Yes, really.
Every episode finds a way to be provocative, disprespectful and very funny.
Several ones are unforgettable, like Mr Hankey the Christmas Poo or Starvin' Marvin.
Though, truth be told, I expected better. Maybe it's season 2! - CreatorGeorge LucasStarsTom KaneDee Bradley BakerMatt LanterJedi Knights lead the Grand Army of the Republic against the droid army of the Separatists.Early that year, I watched the final season, and boy, am I glad that they've released it!
No arc was a clear downer, unlike season 5, and the Yoda one was just... amazing. I mean, they finally went into the whole Sifo-Dyas mess that was never explained in AOTC!! Plus insights on how Yoda got to understand the Force! Yayyy! - CreatorCarlo BernardChris BrancatoDoug MiroStarsPedro PascalWagner MouraBoyd HolbrookA chronicled look at the criminal exploits of Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, as well as the many other drug kingpins who plagued the country through the years. We've watched only four episodes of the first season, here, so it's kinda hard to review at this point. It's well made and interesting for sure, but I'll have to at least finish a season to get a more definite picture.
- CreatorFrank DarabontStarsAndrew LincolnNorman ReedusMelissa McBrideSheriff Deputy Rick Grimes wakes up from a coma to learn the world is in ruins and must lead a group of survivors to stay alive.I still enjoy this show. I didn't think I could ever say that, but after a few misfires every time in the early seasons, it's been a fairly smooth ride since season 5. Negan is still awesome, and you never know what's going to happen, because, boy, do they like to kill off characters!
- CreatorFanny HerreroStarsCamille CottinThibault de MontalembertGrégory MontelFrench serial about the lives and jobs of people working at a talent agency in Paris.I didn't think it would be that fun. The main arcs are quite poor, but the focus on one or two famous actors each episode is really working. Bonus points for the Julie et Joey episode.
- CreatorRobert CarlockTina FeyStarsEllie KemperJane KrakowskiTituss BurgessA woman is rescued from a doomsday cult and starts life over again in New York City. The show is just fun and zany and is not trying to be anything else. We've only watched season 1 and a small chunk of season 2 so far, and I don't plan on stopping soon.
- CreatorAlex GansaHoward GordonStarsClaire DanesMandy PatinkinDamian LewisA bipolar CIA operative becomes convinced a prisoner of war has been turned by al-Qaeda and is planning to carry out a terrorist attack on American soil.January 2019 update: I've just realized I forgot to add this show. Season 6 was watched that year: basically they're starting over again, goodbye Berlin, hello New York, with a whole new terrorist plot/deepstate conspiracy. Very intriguing, pretty smart way of dealing with the Trump stuff. I'm impressed.
- CreatorDan GoorMichael SchurStarsAndy SambergStephanie BeatrizTerry CrewsComedy series following the exploits of Det. Jake Peralta and his diverse, lovable colleagues as they police the NYPD's 99th Precinct.Still hilarious and crazy. Jake in prison anyone?
I don't known how long it'll last so I'm enjoying the shit out of it. - CreatorSimon KinbergCarrie BeckDave FiloniStarsDave FiloniTaylor GrayFreddie Prinze Jr.The crew of the spaceship Ghost defends those who cannot fight for themselves against the Empire, providing the spark for a rebellion. With season 3, it looks like they really went all in with the action stuff. There was a few odd episodes, as always (it usually has something to do with droids...), but near the end, it leveled up completely to show the early formation of the Rebel Alliance and that was dope. Also, they finally put an touching end to the Darth Maul arc which began way back when in The Clone Wars.
- CreatorMatthew MillerStarsDamon WayansKeesha SharpKevin RahmA slightly unhinged cop is partnered with a veteran detective trying to maintain a low stress level in his life. It's silly, over the top, but it's just loads of fun. You know the cast is having a blast shooting this, so I'm just along for the ride, and you know what? It's fine.
