- DirectorAlbert CapellaniStarsLéontine MassartIn this beautiful and wonderfully acted picture we present some of the principal incidents connected with the eventful life of the Maid of Orleans. In the opening picture we see Joan as a peasant girl wandering carefree through the meadows and living a tranquil life among the simple country folks. Her country is besieged in war and she being a patriot and a very religious girl, hears heavenly voices and St. Michael appears before her, telling her to go to see the King and save her country from the enemy. Joan tells her parents of the visions which she saw, but they are amazed at her strange actions and try to persuade her that it is only imagination. Finally they consent to her carrying out her purpose, and she takes her departure from her home and goes with Captain Beaudricourt to see the King. Upon hearing of the strange girl, the King is prone to be skeptical and as a test of her sincerity, he places a substitute on the throne to receive Joan. The latter through her supernatural powers discovers the deception and goes over to the King, who is keeping in the background. She falls on her knees before him and begs to be given charge of the army to lead them on to victory, telling the King that it is divine providence which sends her to him. The King becomes convinced of her sincerity and in the presence of the amassed multitude he complies with her request. In the next picture we see Joan entering Orleans at the head of the army and attacking the famous towers and after a fierce fight they put the enemy to rout. Next we see Joan triumphantly entering the great cathedral at Rheims where Charles VII is crowned King. Finally, at Campiegne, Joan is captured by the enemy and thrown into prison, where she is charged with being a sorceress and condemned to death, and in the last picture we see her being burned at the stake in Rouen, May 14, 1431.
- A cruel nobleman is seen riding through his vast domains and collecting the taxes of his impoverished tenants. If some of the poor farmers of his estate are unable to pay the heavy yearly dues he commands his overseer to seize all the cattle and horses, and thus leave the poor people to starve and toil until they can again collect enough money to fill his bottomless coffers. Thus we follow the almighty master from farm to farm, and his cruelty is felt wherever he stops, until reaching the prosperous house of one of his vassals he commits a barbarous deed which is going to seal his fate. He sees the pretty daughter of his vassal and has her taken to his castle. The father objecting to this outrage, the infuriated ruler has him flogged and tied to a post to die. Rescued by his young son, the robbed man rushes from farm to farm, haranguing the terrified workers rouses them to such a pitch that soon a powerful host of primitively armed men is seen marching towards the castle. The unsuspecting tyrant is soon captured and is going to be stoned by the infuriated peasantry when the captive's wife, hearing of her husband's peril, rushes to the scene. Now, the noble woman has a kind heart and has always been good to the poor sufferers, who on hearing her plead for mercy doff their hats and release their prey. The nobleman just saved from the jaws of death understands that kindness goes further than brutality, and going to a crucifix near he swears to God that his life will henceforth be one of kind and noble deeds.

- DirectorMario CaseriniStarsDante CappelliMaria CaseriniAmleto PalormiThe play opens with the scene on the wild heath where the three witches appear to Macbeth and Banquo, as they are returning from their victorious battle with the rebels. They predict the kingship of Macbeth with the words, "All Hail, King, that shall be hereafter." They show him a crown, and having also predicted that he shall be created Thane of Cawdor, and that the sons of Banquo shall be Kings of Scotland and not those of Macbeth, the witches fade away, to the utter dismay of the two generals. Then follows a series of very fine tableaux, showing King Duncan conferring upon Macbeth the dignity of Thane of Cawdor, thus verifying the prophesy of the witches, the evil council of Lady Macbeth and the visit of King Duncan to Macbeth's castle, accompanied by his two sons, Malcolm and Donalbain, with a numerous retinue. The King is received with gracious smiles by Lady Macbeth, who is still urging her husband to kill him so that they may both attain to royal state. Macbeth's honorable aversion to so foul a deed, and the constant promptings of the wicked Lady Macbeth, are finely portrayed. The murder of the King is finally accomplished by Macbeth, and Lady Macbeth is seen to place the blood-stained dagger in the belt of one of the royal attendants, to divert suspicion. Macbeth is crowned King. The assassination of Banquo follows, and his ghost is seen to appear to Macbeth at the great feast. Macbeth's second consultation with the witches in their cave is shown, and he is told to beware of Macduff, the Thane of Fife, and that he should never be vanquished until the wood of Birnam should move.
- DirectorVictorin-Hippolyte JassetStarsGeorges SaillardRaoul d'AuchyRenée BaillyKing Philip the Fair is much annoyed; he has received a writing from Jacques Morley, Grand Master of the Order of the Knights Templar, stating that the Supreme Council of the Templars is rejected his request to be admitted into the order. The King complains to the Chief Inquisitor that he has been insulted by the Order of the Templars, and also, in a spirit of revenge, states that the Templars have been guilty of crimes against God and the Church. The matter reaches the Pope, who issues a bull giving King Philip the Fair authority to punish the Templars, if it is true that they have been guilty of such crimes. Jacques Morley, accordingly, is arrested, and being tortured confesses to crimes he has never committed. On these confessions he is condemned to be burned alive. On the eve of his death, Jacques Worlay sends word to the King, saying, "King, before this year is ended the two shall meet in the presence of God Almighty!" Gloomy thoughts beset the King's mind, neither day nor night can he keep out of his consciousness the dying words of his victim, they ring in his ears continually. In order to forget them, the King decides to go off on a hunting trip. But the words follow him; he rides faster and faster in order to get away from them, but without avail; suddenly, his horse stumbles and throws the King, mortally wounding his majesty. The King is overtaken by some noblemen and carried to a nearby castle, and as he lies there dying, the King sees the majestic figure of the dead Morlay calling him to appear before the tribunal of God.

- DirectorGeorges MoncaStarsRené LeprinceDickPaul CapellaniAubry de Montidier, a nobleman attached to the court of Charles V of France, was assassinated by Richard Macaire, who was jealous of the favor the King showed the handsome courtier. During his lifetime, Sir Aubry owned a dog renowned for its devotion to its master. Macaire knew this and had the dog chained up, but the latter, breaking his leash, succeeded, after a long hunt, in locating the spot where the murderer had buried the body of his victim. On finding his master's body, the intelligent beast goes in search of one of his master's friends, and the latter, on witnessing the dog's unusual behavior, makes up his mind that something is wrong; so follows the faithful animal as he conducts him to the spot where the body has been interred. When Macaire is confronted by his dumb accuser, the latter exhibits such an animosity towards him that suspicion is immediately aroused. The King therefore orders that a sort of judiciary duel shall take place between the suspected man and the dog. The man's weapon is an enormous stick and the dog is given a barrel with which to defend himself. The King and all the royal household witness the exciting encounter between the man and beast, and after a close contest the man is finally defeated and sentenced to be hanged.
- This picture reveals an old, deserted castle, which is infested with spooks. Two wanderers happen by as night falls, and having no place to lodge they pick out this very desirable looking old house as a place to rest and spend a quiet night. Upon entering the castle they soon discover that they are sadly disappointed in their choice, for immediately they see all sorts of strange objects dancing around them and grotesque spook faces gazing at them from every nook and corner. Too late to retrace their steps, the pair enter the old deserted dining-room, where, standing in the corner, is a closet copiously filled with rare edibles. As they are about to help themselves a lot of fierce looking animals come from the closet and proceed to make life unbearable for the distressed guests. The pair rush into the kitchen and there they meet his Satanic Majesty, who does some of his fine work and calls forth more ferocious beasts, and things are reaching a serious state in the place when, behold, the good Fairy Queen appears and changes everything into the sublime. The animals are all transformed into gallant knights and by a wave of the magic wand a group of pretty maidens appear and the old deserted castle is turned into a most hospitable place where the weary old travelers take advantage of all the courtesy showered upon them.

- DirectorCharles KentStarsCharles KentFlorence TurnerPaul PanzerThe scene opens as King Arthur declares the ninth of the tournaments, the prize of which is the last of nine diamonds. Queen Guinevere declares that illness will prevent her attendance and promptly Launcelot declares that he will not enter the lists, supposing that the Queen's indisposition is but the excuse for their meeting. His declaration is received with surprise, for he has won the other tournaments and wields the mightiest lance. The Queen quickly undeceives the sharer of her guilty love and bids him go to the tournament and win. Launcelot rides forth, attended only by his squire, and, coming to the castle of Astolot, demands of its lord a plain shield that his identity may he hidden. He is made welcome and given the shield of Sir Torre whose shield is yet blank, for he was defeated by Launcelot at the last tournament and may not blazon his arms upon his shield until he has achieved a victory. Launcelot leaves his own shield, bearing his device, in the care of the lovely Elaine, who urges him to wear her broidered sleeve upon his helmet when he rides against the others in the lists. Though he never before has worn a lady's gage, he accepts the favor and rides forth, little thinking of the damage he is doing. At Camelot he again defeats all other knights, but in the last encounter he is himself sorely wounded and is carried off the field by the faithful Sir Lavaine. A dagger has been thrust beneath his shoulder and its removal is followed by so copious a flow of blood that Lavaine hurries him to a hermit's cave, where he is cared for. King Arthur has sent Sir Gawain in search of the stranger knight, whose prowess has roused comment and it is Gawain who first brings to Astolot the news of Launcelot's victory and wound. Elaine goes to the hermit's cave, where she nurses him back to health, but Launcelot loves only the Queen and at last he rides away without a farewell. He meant it in all kindness, but he has broken the tender heart of the gentle maid, and on the bed of death she writes him a farewell and "the dead steered by the dumb," goes to Arthur's Court to bear the last adieu. Sadly the Queen places flowers upon the bier and Launcelot, oppressed by grief keeps knightly vigil beside the fragile form, finding there the repentance that in time purged his soul from the crime of illicit love.

- DirectorUbaldo Maria Del ColleStarsMaria JacobiniAlberto NepotiMario RonconiAt Domremy, a town situated close to the river Meuse, little Joan, the daughter of Jacques d'Arc, heard the tales of the war which was then devastating her country. Mercenary troops of the Duke of Armagnor fought in defense of King Charles VII. They were opposed by the soldiers of the Duke of Burgundy, allied with the English. Devastation and pillage followed in their wake. The peasantry passed their days in wretchedness and terror, hanging round the castles imploring aid and assistance. It was a constant din of battle, galloping horses and the clash of arms. All houses were solidly barred. Joan lived thus in the midst of trouble and anxiety. At times the sound of distinct and melodious bells reached her ears when tending her sheep and cattle in the meadows. She knelt for hours, listening to those mysterious and sweet sounds. One evening she heard a voice calling her in the sweetest tone imaginable. The maiden knelt; a great flood of light dazzled her. St. Michael was standing before the bewildered girl and spoke to her. His words sounded like music to her ear, "Beloved Joan, hearken to the duty that lies before thee. Go to Lord Baudricourt and then to the King. Ask for arms and soldiers, and fight the enemies of France." Some days later, St. Margaret and St. Catharine appeared to Joan and confirmed St. Michael's order, encouraging her and recommending, at the same time, virtue and resolution. Joan was now firmly assured of her mission. The Lord of Baudricourt receives Joan's supplication with derision. "I do not believe a word of all this," says he to Joan's uncle, who has accompanied her, "She is dismissed." Bertrand de Poulangy, a young man secretly in love with Joan, entreats her not to despair. He accompanies her on a second visit to the Lord of Vaucouleur and she finally succeeds. Baudricourt consents to furnish Joan with a small body of knights who will accompany her to the King. Joan, accompanied by Bertrand, puts on a coat of mail, girds her sword and mounting her steed rides at the head of her squires to the castle of Chinon, the actual residence of the King. More than three hundred barons and feudal lords of the realm were then assembled at the King's Court. Desirous of judging for himself whether Joan's mission was really inspired, the King disguises as a courtier, among whom he mixes. Joan enters amid the assemblage. Her rustic beauty causes quite a flutter; the ladies whisper, the knights admire her. Without the least hesitation, she walks straight up to the King, before whom she kneels and says, "Kindly Dauphin, I am Joan the Virgin, from Domremy. The King of Heaven has sent me to say that through my humble offices you will truly become King of France." Joan not only convinces the King of her heavenly mission, but also the King's councilors, all learned prelates, who ply her with numerous and intricate questions. The brilliant career of the Virgin Warrior has begun. At the head of ten thousand men Joan starts for Orleans. The French array was defending the city heroically, but has been reduced to extremities through lack of provisions. Joan crosses the Loire, gives battle, and on the evening of May 1, 1429, the glorious Virgin makes a triumphant entry into the beleaguered city. The next day she discusses with Dunois, commander of the city and the officers of the garrison, her plan of defense and studies the position of the enemy. Anxious and filled with pity for the many lives which must necessarily be lost through warfare, Joan shoots a missive into the English camp. She implores the Englishmen in the name of Heaven not to shed blood ruthlessly, but to raise the siege and depart in peace. This message is received with jeers and taunts, which affect Joan to tears. For fourteen hours the battle raged. One after the other the strong towers on the bridge were taken, and finally the English were forced to raise the siege. Joan, following up her advantage, pursues the flying horde and completely routs the English at the battle of Patay. Talbot was taken prisoner. Night falls on the field of battle. The heroic maiden helps the wounded. The tidings of Joan's magnificent victory stirs the Court and the vacillating King. Joan is received with unusual honors and succeeds in persuading Charles to go to Rheims, there to be crowned King of France in the sacred cathedral of that ancient city. The imposing pageant of the Dauphin Charles' triumphal procession, led by Joan holding aloft her standard, fills the population with enthusiasm and joy. As Joan proceeds, women and girls kiss the hem of her mantle; her path is strewn with roses. On July 11, 1429, the Dauphin Charles is duly crowned King of France, and thus it came to pass that the second part of Joan's mission was fulfilled. Joan is on the eve of returning to her native home when renewed activities of the English convince her that her task is not yet completed and cannot be until she has driven them all from French soil. However, the King's inborn pusillanimity, fostered by the envy, malice and hatred of both the Court and the Clergy, causes him to take an unwise and undignified course. He commands Joan to lay down her arms and retire in one of the royal residences. With intense sorrow, Joan places her sword and spurs and armor on the altar of Saint Denis. Many of her companions and soldiers are in tears. The people hold her in veneration and accompany her, singing hymns and acclaiming her frantically. Mothers bring their sick children to her; she blesses and restores them to health. Joan frets over her inactivity; the Duke of Burgundy's troops are still active and Joan longs to go out and meet them. One morning she starts at the head of her army and leads it under the walls of Paris. Despite the fact that she has been wounded, she again leads her forces to the attack, but is again repulsed. Finally she retires to Compiegne, when, falling into a trap, she is taken prisoner by John of Luxembourg. Joan's star is fading. She is kept a prisoner; her faithful Bertrand succeeds in reaching her in prison and endeavors to make a way for her escape. Joan of Arc heeds not the divine "voices" that remonstrate with her. In her rash attempt she falls on the rocks at the foot of the tower where she was imprisoned and is once more a captive. John of Luxembourg, greatly terrified, the effect of a demoralizing dream, delivers Joan into the hands of the English for the paltry sum of $10,000. Joan is accused of witchcraft. In her prison she is subjected to the insults of her guards and noblemen. Her confessor, the priest Loyseleur, betrays her. She is taken before the inquisition tribunal, which cross-examines her severely. Her replies to the subtle questions of the judges are dignified. The tribunal is confused, but inexorable. Joan is condemned to death by fire. Joan, dressed in white, is led to her doom. Loyseleur, the groveling monk, implores her forgiveness for his treachery. Bertrand, her faithful attendant, showers roses to her as a last tribute of love and respect. She ascends to the scaffold and is tied to the stake. She asks for a cross, which is given to her and which she kisses, praying at the same time for her enemies and invoking the saints. The flames surround Joan; her head droops, her lips faintly murmur the name of the Crucified and her noble and immortal soul appears to be home up to heaven by heavenly messengers. Even her enemies wept and were heard to say, "We have burned a saint."

- DirectorSvend GadeHeinz SchallStarsAsta NielsenPaul ConradiMathilde BrandtDanish silent movie-star Asta Nielsen formed her own production company to make this film, in which new elements are combined with features (and a few lines) familiar from Shakespeare's version of the legend. The most important of these changes sees Hamlet made into a female character - a princess forced to masquerade as a man by her scheming mother; from this follows Hamlet's secret passion for Horatio and rivalry with Ophelia for his love. Queen Gertrude is here presented as conspiring in her first husband's murder, and the old king's ghost does not appear - young Hamlet merely hears a voice from the tomb and (apparently) dreams of him. In addition, Hamlet now kills Claudius (in a fire) immediately upon returning from Norway with an army led by old school- friend Fortinbras, and it falls to Gertrude to engineer Hamlet's death in the fencing match as well as kill herself by accidentally drinking the poisoned wine.
