- DirectorPeter WeirStarsJim CarreyEd HarrisLaura LinneyAn insurance salesman discovers his whole life is actually a reality TV show.A comedy/drama with a ridiculous number of layers and interpretations, the Truman Show is surprising both in how funny it is as a Jim Carrey comedy, and how sincere it is in its allegory. The Truman Show is my favourite film of all time, because it is a perfect example of what a movie can be: entertaining, thought provoking and emotional without compromising on any of these elements.
- DirectorJames McTeigueStarsHugo WeavingNatalie PortmanRupert GravesIn a future British dystopian society, a shadowy freedom fighter, known only by the alias of "V", plots to overthrow the tyrannical government - with the help of a young woman.V for Vendetta is a perfect mix of political intrigue, character drama, and superhero story, with a sprinkling of romance, action and comedy to even it out. Although it is undeniably flawed (especially in terms of being an adaptation) there are no massive mistakes that I can see, mainly due to my complete bias for it. It blew me away the first time I saw it, and it continues to blow me away.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioJonah HillMargot RobbieBased on the true story of Jordan Belfort, from his rise to a wealthy stock-broker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government. This film is an incredible story of how corrupt and destructive capitalism can be. Based on a true story, this film adds surrealism and edgy comedy to the mix, making this film infinitely rewatchable, and it doesn't hold back. Another great thing about this film is that two people can watch this movie and come to polar opposite conclusions, some thinking this is a celebration of decadence, while others (including myself) see it as satirical, and a condemnation of unchecked capitalism and how evil of a system it truly is.
