Ce drame local, produit par une jeune compagnie Renaissance Films, fondée par un immigrant français. Encouragée par la critique et le public, enchantés de voir enfin des histoires québécoises arriver au grand écran, Renaissance Films produisit au Québec plusieurs autres longs métrages à la fin des années quarante (Le gros Bill et Docteur Louise tous deux réalisés par René Delacroix en 1949, suivi de Les Lumières de ma ville de Jean-Yves Bigras, 1950). Les difficultés financières amenèrent Renaissance Films à déclarer faillite en 1951. En 1947, le réalisateur d'origine russe Fedor Ozep signera les deux versions de son second film québécois, La forteresse (version française) et Whispering City (version anglaise), qui fut un cuisant échec commercial. Ozep est décédé en 1949. Le père Chopin marque donc les timides débuts d'une production cinématographique québécoise alors encore fortement dominée par le clergé. Voici deux extraits de l'article paru le 22 avril 1945 dans Le Petit Journal, trois jours après la première mondiale du film au Théâtre Saint-Denis : C'était fête jeudi soir. On pouvait lire une joie non dissimulée sur le visage des quelques milliers de spectateurs qui avaient pris place dans la vaste enceinte du Saint-Denis. Il y avait du sourire sur toutes les lèvres et l'atmosphère était chargée d'espoir. Lorsque les premières images du film ont frappé triomphalement l'écran, tous les spectateurs ont spontanément déclenché un tonnerre d'applaudissements. « Le Père Chopin » recevait le baptême. L'intrigue de ce film nous transporte d'abord dans un coquet petit village québécois, où habitent Paul Dupont, professeur de musique - surnommé « le père Chopin » à cause de sa grande admiration pour le compositeur - et ses cinq enfants. L'argent est rare, mais cela n'empêche pas le bonheur. Un événement vient cependant changer le cours paisible de leur existence [...] L'article, signé André Lecompte, termine en ces mots « Le Père Chopin » est une belle victoire pour le Canada français; l'ensemble est un véritable succès: Renaissance Films a fait un tour de force et la voie est ouverte à d'autres succès. Honneurs aux vaillants pionniers. Vive le cinéma québécois.
