Business troubles multiply, and when Izzy requests a loan to take over the business with Max, Julius passionately announces his bankruptcy and plans to take an overdose of sleeping powder. Max, however, explains to Pearl that he will ask no dowry from her and wishes to form a partnership with her father. Becky announces the good news to Julius, Max and Pearl are happily united, and the family returns home.

Trying to save Alice, Vera becomes involved in the scandal, and Bruce takes back the rosary he gave her to pledge his love. Bruce barely escapes an explosion at the cannery constructed by Wright on his marshlands, and when Father Kelly names Wright as a conspirator, the posse sets out to capture him in a storm. He seeks refuge in the church, and when a pistol is drawn against Father Kelly, Bruce's mother receives the fatal bullet; Wright escapes and falls to his death while crossing an old bridge.
