- DirectorOlivier SchatzkyStarsBruno CremerJean YanneGeorges StaquetA rich entrepreneur is assaulted and Maigret must find out who did it and why.Jean Yanne does a terrific job as nasty businessman on the canals of France. His son hangs himself, he has a daughter by a woman not his wife, it's quite a story. Very atmospheric depiction of the lives of sailors and their families. Novel, 1933.
- DirectorMichel FavartStarsBruno CremerPascale RobertsPhilippe UchanMaigret is dispatched on a special murder case to the South of France with instructions from a very high source not to make waves while solving the crime. The homicide victim, an Australian ex-pat, was a hero in the French Resistance.Maigret's called to Marseille to investigate a death. He meets a woman named Jaja who runs a bar, with a girl who makes money as a prostitute. Pascale Roberts and Marina Golovine star. Novel, 1932.
- DirectorClaude GorettaStarsBruno CremerJérôme DeschampsMichel CacciaA death at a luxury hotel gives Maigret plenty of additional headaches when one of the wealthy suspects proves to have a lot of local influence.Novel, 1932. Murder in employee's quarters of a luxury hotel. The story takes some fascinating turns.
- DirectorAndré ChandelleStarsBruno CremerAlexandre BrasseurMichael LonsdaleA wealthy Englishman emotionlessly identifies a picture of his dead wife. The novel of 1931 is titled Le charretier de la "Providence". The world of the canals and the men who work on the barges is depicted again. Fine performance by Michael Lonsdale as a dotty English aristocrat.
- DirectorSerge LeroyStarsBruno CremerAurore ClémentPatrick FloersheimMaigret is called to the canal St Martin; a headless body has been found. He finds a café nearby with an uncommunicative owner.Novel, 1955. Wonderful star casting of Aurore Clement as Alice Calas, a woman who owns a bar and has two men very attached to her. One of the best episodes.
- DirectorCharles NemesStarsBruno CremerVahina GiocanteRoger SouzaWhile assisting the police elsewhere in France, Maigret becomes unofficially involved in a missing persons case involving the husband (Marcel Blanc) of a young woman (Germaine Blanc). She's trying very hard to find her husband who has disappeared under mysterious circumstances, but she is very reticent when speaking about it to Maigret. As he follows her and finally gains her partial trust, the plot begins to expand to include stolen paintings, crooked boxing and a fence who turns out to be Germaine's father.Story, 1950. In the south, there is a boxing reporter in trouble. The tailless pigs of the title are little figurines. Vahina Giocante stars.
- DirectorCharles NemesStarsBruno CremerChristine BoissonAlain RimouxWhen the wealthy owner of a pharmaceutical company is shot and killed at his desk with a plundered safe behind him, Maigret wonders if it was just a robbery gone wrong. Whatever it was, he's convinced the answer lies down the block, where the victim's ex-wife and her husband, his girlfriend and his wastrel son all live.L'ombre chinoise, novel, 1932. One of the best; the star is the apartment building where the action takes place. A drug researcher named Boyer is killed in his suite. Christine Boisson is excellent as a neurotic woman neighbour.
- DirectorClaudio TonettiStarsBruno CremerAlexandre BrasseurPhilippe KhorsandMaigret is traveling by train on vacation to meet his wife and niece when he sees a man jump off the moving train. He follows and ends up in the hospital at Saint Clothilde with minor injuries. Then he finds out that there have been several unusual murders in the area, locally attributed to a "madman" and he begins an investigation with considerable resistance from local authorities.Le fou de Bergerac, novel, 1932. This one is puzzling: the characters have been kept, but the plot has been altered, to the point of creating a new story around some people who took part in the Vichy regime during the war. I would have preferred a simpler story without the Vichy theme. Some good acting from Michel Vuillermoz and Philippe Khorsand.
- DirectorPhilippe BérengerStarsBruno CremerMarianne BaslerChristian MorinMaigret goes undercover at a boarding house where a woman with two boys is occupying room number 4, hence Mrs. Quatre/Four. She has fled her home and husband with the boys and is in hiding after seeing a dead woman's body in the conservatory with her husband at night. Her reports to the police have no backing as the body is gone and her husband has also disappeared. Maigret takes on the investigation under the name Mr. Fountaine because a detail referring to a fountain, he believes, gives veracity to her story.Madame Quatre--her room number--is living at a pension when Maigret meets her. Did she kill her husband? or is she a liar? he'll find out. Marianne Basler as the woman.
- DirectorJosé PinheiroStarsBruno CremerJacqueline DannoJean-Louis FoulquierA stripper starts to report a murder that has not yet happened, but leaves before making the report official. She is found murdered that morning. Complicating matters is the relationship she had with one of Maigret's assistants.Maigret au Picratt's, novel, 1951. Very entertaining, if a little confusing. A stripper (Maria Golovine) is murdered in her club late at night; she knows about some secrets in the shady world of a strip club. Excellent evocation of a show business milieu, and terrific music from the club band.
- DirectorJacques FanstenStarsBruno CremerJean-Luc BideauManuela GouraryAfter receiving some threatening anonymous letters, an old classmate of Maigret wants him to investigate. Then, the classmate is killed.Novel, 1956. One of the better ones, both in terms of acting and atmosphere. Jean-Luc Bideau plays a really nasty man who has a chain of butcher shops; there's a long list of people who'd like to kill him. Who actually did is eventually discovered by a bemused Maigret (his barely controlled dislike of Fumale is wonderful to watch). The dead man was a generous donor to the party in power, so it's a very sensitive case.
- DirectorDenys de La PatellièreStarsBruno CremerClaude PiépluAnnick AlaneYoung Cécile and her aunt are killed. Maigret must find out who did it.Novel, 1942. Cecile is a little nuts, the men at the police station think. She hears furniture being moved around the house late at night, wonders why. Then she turns up dead. Good production, acting. Claude Pieplu shines as a disbarred lawyer with dubious morals who has a way with banter.
- DirectorLaurent HeynemannStarsBruno CremerRoger PierreMarianne GrovesMaigret is not at all pleased to become reacquainted with the dubious Leon Florentin, who was at school with him and now needs his help.Novel, 1968. One of the best in the series. Excellent acting from Roger Pierre, Marianne Groves, Hubert Saint-Macary. A woman with four lovers is found murdered in her room. Who wanted to kill her? Lies, blackmail, all sorts of motives for the men in her life.
- DirectorJuraj HerzStarsBruno CremerMarisa BerensonEmmanuel SalingerWhen Joseph Heurtin escapes from prison, it's because Maigret has arranged it. And if Heurtin didn't kill that old woman, who did?Novel, 1931. This is said to be the most popular Maigret novel, with two films and six TV adaptations. The emotional tone is very dark, forbidding. Mysterious setting, good acting make this memorable. A man is released from prison in hopes that he can help solve a case. Olivier Achard, Marisa Berenson.
- DirectorClaude GorettaChristian KarcherStarsBruno CremerJean-Paul RoussillonDidier FlamandMaigret investigates a series of murders in a small town.Novel, 1953. A small town, three murders, what is the link or the motive? Jean-Paul Roussillon (Conte de Noel) stars, great cameo from Lara Guirao.
- DirectorHannu KahakorpiStarsBruno CremerHeinz BennentElizabeth BourgineWhen Maigret's fellow police officer Lognon is shot in Helsinki, he's forced to travel to Finland in order to investigate Lognon's shooting with the help of a local police officer Ari Vaara. But how are a Swedish art dealer, his French wife and a mysterious Brit involved in the shooting?Novel, 1964. The action has been moved from Paris to Finland, probably for better European sales. This is not one of the stronger stories, having to do with a shady art dealer and his very eccentric wife. Heinz Bennent as the dealer.
- DirectorClaude GorettaStarsBruno CremerMichael LonsdaleRenée FaureMaigret learns from a shady acquaintance that a murder has occurred during a burglary at a dentist's home. Tho his wife has disappeared, neither the suspiciously uncooperative dentist nor his virago mother are talking, and there is no body.Novel, 1951. This is the first episode in the series. A prostitute tries to clear her boyfriend who has disappeared, fearing he'll be charged with breaking and entering in Neuilly. He found a corpse in the house he entered. The two occupants of the house, Renee Faure and Michael Lonsdale, are very creepy people indeed. Wonderful suspense and atmosphere. Laurent Petitgirard's music is very evocative.
- DirectorJuraj HerzStarsBruno CremerBruno TodeschiniHélène SurgèreFour serial murders in the Marais district of Paris. Maigret sets a trap. Pretending to have arrested the assassin, he sends trained plainclothes policewomen out at night as bait. Maigret hopes that the killer's pride will force him to act.It isn't fair to compare this version with the great Gabin film of 1958, which had Jean Desailly, Annie Girardot and Lucienne Bogaert as the leads--this version is anemic and uninspired. Can be ignored.
- DirectorCharles NemesStarsBruno CremerJean-Claude DauphinJeanne MarineMaigret tries to find the person responsible for the death of a harbor master who, after disappearing for six weeks, could no longer speak and had no physical reactions to anything.Simenon wrote several novels with a port setting; in this one there's a complex story of murder and hidden loves around the disappearance of a sailor named Joris.
- DirectorAndrzej KostenkoStarsBruno CremerAgnès SoralClaude FaraldoMaigret must play a long waiting game to catch a big-time crook.Novel, 1965. There's a jewelry shop hold-up, leading to the death of a policeman. Maigret questions Manuel, a criminal he's known for 20 years, and gets nothing from him. Agnes Soral (Tchao pantin) plays a woman who'll do anything... Good adaptation, acting and music from Petitgirard.
- 1967–19901h 43m7.5 (16)TV EpisodeDirectorJean-Paul SassyStarsJean RichardJean-Paul ZehnackerFrance DelahalleMaigret's elderly countess friend in the small town where he grew up, receives an ominous note that she will die before the completion of a morning Mass.Novel, 1932. There's a great film with Jean Gabin and Michel Auclair, see it and don't bother with this episode. Jean Richard was a mediocre Maigret--he had the face of a bank teller, not a subtle thoughtful one--and the other actors are forgettable too.
- DirectorPierre Granier-DeferreStarsBruno CremerEtienne ChicotDaniel GélinMaigret visits a small town trying to get information about some Polish gangsters. While staying there, he catches the flu. During his recovery, a murder occurs in the inn where he is staying.Story, 1950. Confined to a single set--an auberge--this is a quiet episode that doesn't make your pulse quicken. Daniel Gelin plays an old man, Etienne Chicot (great slacker in Hotel des Ameriques) the innkeeper.
- DirectorLaurent HeynemannStarsBruno CremerAnnie GrégorioValérie KarsentiWhile staking out a boarding-house where is staying Emile Paulus, a suspect, Detective Archambaud is wounded by a bullet shot from an undetermined place. To further the investigation, Maigret, his superior, decides to put up at the boarding-house posing as an ordinary guest. He is welcomed by Mademoiselle Clément, the dignified owner, and soon discovers the various people living in the place. He also takes a special interest in a woman who dwells in a neighboring block of flats, Françoise Boursicault, the lonely crippled wife of a purser most of the time at sea... A common thread through all of them is that... they seem to have something to hide...A single set: an hotel, L'Estrapade in a quiet residential street near the Jardin de Luxembourg. One of Maigret's men is shot while staking out the hotel; Maigret takes a room in it to figure things out. Star casting of Maria Schneider as Mme. Boursicault, a woman who knows more than she lets on.
- DirectorJacques FanstenStarsBruno CremerMartine SarceyMaurice ChevitA man finds a note signed Picpus written on a piece of blotting paper. Picpus says he is going to kill a fortune teller. And sure enough, a fortune teller is found murdered.Story, 1944. Martine Sarcey plays Mme. Le Cloaguen, the only woman Maigret ever met whom he thoroughly hated--you will find out why in this well-acted episode.
- DirectorChristian de ChalongeStarsBruno CremerAlexandre BrasseurThierry FrémontA wealthy wine dealer's death doesn't bother his wife or "secretary."A wine merchant is shot dead after a tryst with a girl, who's to blame? Dominique Frot has an amusing cameo, but this is not one of the best episodes.
- DirectorPierre JoassinStarsBruno CremerAlain DouteyRonny CoutteureEven on holiday, Maigret must investigate crime.Maigret goes to Belgium, where his wife has relatives, and gets involved in a murder investigation, even though he is far from his jurisdiction (as people keep telling him). Good acting, direction.
- DirectorPekka ParikkaStarsBruno CremerRobin RenucciTimo TorikkaWhen a French man is accused of murder in Finland and he refuses to talk unless to a French police, Inspector Maigret is once again forced to travel to Finland to investigate the case.Another novel rewritten to provide a Finnish locale. All the Finns struggle manfully to speak French, some manage to. This and Maigret et le fantome are the weakest episodes I've seen yet.
- 1967–19901h 22m8.5 (15)TV EpisodeDirectorMarcel CravenneStarsJean RichardSuzanne FlonGabriel CattandAfter a mutilated hand was found entangled in the prop of a canal barge, divers find other body parts, but no head. Maigret struggles not only to identify the corpse but also to find out what happened. This gave me a lot of pleasure, or rather Suzanne Flon did. Her voice is so splendid: that smoky drawl--"no-n, no-n... ouais... c'est arrive", it's gorgeous to my ears. The Canal Saint-Martin looks great too, with the shops on the quai. We'll forget about the man who plays Maigret.
- DirectorMichel SibraStarsBruno CremerJean-Claude FrissungEric PratMurder occurs in a family that has fallen from Grace. Maigret is on the case.Gisele Casadesus (100 years old this year and still acting!) plays the matriarch of a crooked family in this episode. Christine Cohendy shines as the daughter who has cut off ties with the family.
- DirectorDenys Granier-DeferrePierre JoassinStarsBruno CremerAlexandre BrasseurCaroline SilholMaigret investigates a threatening letter at the Parendon mansion.Novel, 1968. A wealthy lawyer gets threatening letters, Maigret investigates. Michel Duchaussoy and Caroline Sihol play the unhappy couple. Pierre Granier-Deferre wrote the screenplay, his son Denys directed, and his grand daughter Celia plays the lawyer's daughter: that's a family!
- DirectorBertrand Van EffenterreStarsBruno CremerMichel BouquetElric ThomasMaigret observes a man dragging a corpse along the ground at night. The man is a judge; Maigret must discover the identity of the dead man.Michel Bouquet plays a judge with a very strange family. When a man turns up dead in his house, the judge starts to cover up the traces. Some fine acting in this one.
- DirectorAlain TasmaBertrand Van EffenterreStarsBruno CremerSunnyi MellesRoland BlancheMaigret investigates a murder at a crossroads in rural France. Everybody has something to hide, and he's got to find the guilty one. This competes with the Renoir film of 1931, with Pierre Renoir playing Maigret. I found it engrossing; the puzzle of why these people living in isolation have all these conflicts is well worked out. Sunnyi Melles is very good as a trampy elegant woman with many secrets.
- DirectorSerge LeroyStarsBruno CremerAlexandra VandernootSabrina LeurquinMaigret is sent at the Border with Belgium to investigate on a shady affair.Whenever the action is set in a foreign country, Belgium in this case, the dramatic effect is diminished. I didn't find a lot of interest in this one. A Walloon is suspected of a crime by his Flemish neighbours, Maigret investigates.
- DirectorFrançois LucianiStarsBruno CremerAlexandre BrasseurLaure DuthilleulMaigret investigates the death of a seemingly boring accountant killed while standing at the bedroom window of his fourth floor flat. The victim had no strong feelings for his wife or his children, and a boring position at a bathroom fixture supplier, and has no friends, therefore, no enemies. His only love was a canary. Maigret calls his young nephew inspector to help find out just who the victim really was. He finds, literally, more of the same. But within that sameness, one difference.A dead man has a lot of secrets, so many in fact that working the puzzle out is hard for the viewer, as it is for Maigret.
- DirectorBruno GantillonStarsBruno CremerAlexandre BrasseurMichaël MorrisMaigret, accompanied by an inspector from Scotland Yard, visits a small island where a man, who carried an old letter coming from Maigret, was murdered. In the sunny south, beaches and sail boats and pretty girls. Not one of the best episodes.
- DirectorPierre Granier-DeferreStarsBruno CremerAlexandre BrasseurFlorence DarelA shot is heard at 3pm from the waiting room of a shady financier. Minutes later he is found shot dead. Among the witnesses are two inspectors waiting to issue a summons. A suicide? Maigret sees it as a classic Agathe Christie mystery: enclosed scene and limited suspects, all of whom have motive. He keeps everyone there and lets them simmer until someone comes to a boil. That beautiful redhead Florence Darel stars as the young mistress of a sleazy businessman who's made lots of enemies. Claustrophobia a problem--just one set--but the acting is very good. Jacques Dacqmine as the victim.
- DirectorJoyce BuñuelStarsBruno CremerDanièle LebrunBernadette LafontA young prostitute is killed in a posh Paris apartment, and Maigret is on the case. Who did it?This is a good episode about some women who idolize a powerful man, in this case a surgeon. Daniele Lebrun as the wife is appropriately worshipful, Brigitte Catillon as the sister-in-law is harsh and cynical, and Anny Romand plays the doctor's assistant. Bernadette Lafont whom I have liked for many years is a very funny observer of all these people.
- DirectorPierre JoassinStarsBruno CremerGeorges SiatidisPascale ArbillotWhile in Brussels where he is being rewarded with the Order of Leopold, Maigret is asked for by a man named Xavier Marton who tells him that he suspects his wife Gisèle to want to murder him. Then the man disappears. The following evening a woman by the name of Gisèle Marton is waiting for him in the lounge when Maigret arrives in this hotel. She warns the French commissaire that he must not believe what her husband has told him as the man is paranoiac. Puzzled by this unusual situation, Maigret decides to investigate. At the Martons'luxurious house (another oddity considering what modest jobs the couple have) he meets Jany, Gisèle's sister, who lets him know that he shouldn't believe all her sister says...This is one of the finest episodes. The Marton family is living in a hell of their own devising, and sooner or later something will explode. And it does. Fine acting particularly from Pascale Arbillot.
- DirectorLaurent HeynemannStarsBruno CremerFranck GourlatEmilie LafargeA tramp is found, unconscious and wounded, in the Seine.A tramp is attacked under one of the Paris bridges. Maigret discovers the man is not who he seems to be. A homeless girl provides some cynical commentary. Well made episode.
- DirectorPierre Granier-DeferreStarsBruno CremerStanislas ForlaniAnne RousselA child while is going to church to make an altar boy sees a corpse in the street. No one else sees that corpse, and two minutes later, that corpse is disappeared. Later the child claims to have invented the story. Maigret must find out, first of all, if the corpse is really existed or if it is a lie of the child. It's a little hard to follow the story, and the lack of violence means no attention-grabbing moments, but the acting will carry you along. Special notice to Jean Martin as a retired gay judge who delivers some very pertinent comments on the case.
- DirectorPierre KoralnikStarsBruno CremerArielle DombasleBernard HallerMaigret is spending a few days between assignments avoiding a long trip back to Paris and then on again to his next assignment. The seaside resort is run by an acquaintance from earlier days in Paris, Monsieur Louis. Staying at the resort is a art dealer, Monsieur Owen, who is wheelchair bound from MS and accompanied by a nurse. Also staying is a flamboyant actress with her newly acquired second husband and a dog. There is also a gentleman whom Monsieur Louis describes as a "fixer" who "helps" people not favored by Lady Luck at the Casino. A unknown dead man is found in Monsieur Owen's bath with the actress's dead dog. Both the second husband and Monsieur Owen have disappeared. The actress faints; the nurse demures. Maigret who is on vacation and "not involved" even after Monsieur Louis's request for help get interested in the strange actions of the characters.Star casting here: Arielle Dombasle plays a movie star with strong resemblance to Rita Hayworth in a story set in a coastal hotel. A mysterious art collector is found dead; Maigret is ill at ease in the heat. Bernard Haller plays the hotel manager.
- DirectorEdwin BailyStarsBruno CremerGeneviève FontanelMichèle SimonnetMaigret travels to Dole after a gun found with a murdered "vagrant" matched one used to kill another "vagrant" under a Paris bridge. There he encounters a pair of feuding sisters, one of whom owns the shed the victim was found in. The feud has been going on for 30 years, the source of which is both clear and muddied at the same time, just like the weather.Novel, Le deuil a Fonsine. We're in the countryside, it can't stop raining, Maigret's borrowed boots don't fit him, and he has to deal with two sisters who hate each other so much (one throws a Molotov cocktail at the other's shed); it is a very difficult situation but Maigret comes through with his usual calm. Superb acting from Genevieve Fontanel and Michele Simonnet as the antagonistic sisters.
- DirectorClaudio TonettiStarsBruno CremerMonique ChaumetteLionel AbelanskiDr. Baron is a respectable physician, married with two children. When his servant girl from Brittany dies of poisoning, her parents file a complaint with the police. Maigret travels to the doctor's home in Neuilly and investigates allegations of foul play associated with another servant; he also learns that a vagrant visited the house weekly.Story, Monsieur Lundi. A doctor lives peacefully in the country until the day his kid's nanny is murdered. Then he becomes suspect no. 1... Excellent acting from Monique Chaumette and Lionel Abelanski as mother and son serving the doctor.
- DirectorDavid DelrieuxStarsBruno CremerOdette LaureBéatrice AgeninThe maid to a wealthy elderly woman is murdered. The latter tells the authorities that she believes it was a case of mistaken identity by the killer and that she herself was their target.Odette Laure, almost 80 when she starred in this episode, plays a woman who survives an attempt on her life. Maigret is charmed by her as he works at solving the case.
