Advent Calendar Marathon 2019
Naturally, one might expect Christmas-related movies to see here but based on an idea of advent calendar I wanted this little winter marathon to be surprising with every entry, so I decided to randomize it maximally.
Two thirds of the idea could be credited to Stuart Ashen who both annually does advent calendars as a part of his YouTube routine and recently started to use random word generators to buy surprising stuff to review from different online retail websites. I've combined these two ideas with my very own penchant for idiosyncratic marathons and decided to follow the next algorithm:
-I narrowed the years to 1989 and 1990 because I research the thirty-year pop culture cycle as one of my numerous hobbies. As advent calendars traditionally last for 25 days until Christmas, I decided to divide movies semi-equally with 1989 and 1990: it is pretty much granted that there will be quite a few movies which had limited release premiere in 1989 and then a wide release in 1990, so at least one movie falls perfectly between the two years;
-Apart from year I also search for a specific word courtesy of Random Word Generator. I only refresh and try again, when word is a very generic detour which might or might not give just results for a movie I've seen already (although idea of a rewatch or two is not entirely out of the picture).
-I pick the first movie I would encounter through search engine on YouTube or elsewhere with a watchable option and just go for it, nearly immediately.
I figured that such an odd and idiosyncratic idea might provide me with some of the movies I wouldn't have picked to see. Despite I'm also having another small marathon in December and trying to catch up with my "to watch" list, I feel like random movies sometimes rejuvenate me and keep me going. That said, if I randomly stumble upon the movie from the "to watch list" I'll consider this a good omen and watch it anyhow.
Note 1: I've started this a bit late and expect some pauses to happen at times, so when I'm catching up I'm writing in brackets for which day.
Note 2: I decided to cut that attempt short this year but I'm definitely interested to revisit in 2020 and try with more preparation and enthusiasm - at the end of 2019 I'm just too exhausted to try and challenge myself more than usual, which was already the case for most of the year.
