Her meeting with Cosse-Brissac (Fred Church) of the King's Guard brings something new into her life--love. So secretly she carries on an affair with him, hoodwinking the king despite Jean Du Barry'es efforts to have her hypocrisy brought to his lord's attention. On the contrary due to his constant interference, he is banished from the court. With Louis' death, Madame Du Barry and Brissac are unmolested until the outbreak of the French Revolution. Du Barry joins them and incites the mob to arrest Madame Du Barry. In the mock court of those unsettled days, she is convicted along with every other person who was in Louis' favor. At attempt to escape in which Brissac partakes only results in recapture with Brissac mortally wounded. And so Madame Du Barry ends her life on the guillotine--a life in which she, though sinful, was more sinned against than sinning. Mary assumes Ethel's identity and is received by Lady Clifford as her niece. Elliott falls in love with Mary. Stanley returns to London with Ethel, who has recovered from her wounds. Mary confesses what she has done, and despite Lady Clifford's pleas for her to stay, she returns to the parish house to work with children.

Fearing her arrest, Maurice urges her to accompany him back to Spain, but The Tiger attacks their coach and imprisons them. At a feast held in her honor, however, Lolette urges The Tiger to drink, and when he is unconscious, she and Maurice escape.

While Elsie continues in her deceptive ways, Stevens, finally wise to the Vixen, marries Helen.

Upon the arrival of the Gendarmes, Esmaralda is placed under arrest charged with the murder. Esmaralda is subjected to torture to make her confess, but is defiant, knowing that she is innocent. The bell ringer of the cathedral, Quasimodo, who secretly worships the Gypsy girl, becomes her protector. When Frallo visits the prisoner the bell ringer interferes. There is a struggle and the former is hurled from a parapet and killed. Again the girl appears before the tribunal. Put on the rack, she admits the murder of the captain. Just as Esmaralda is to be guillotined, the bell ringer gives the true version of the murder, implicating Frallo whom he killed. Quasimodo, the plucky bell ringer, who was Esmaralda's protector, and her liberator, becomes her husband.

Returning to London, she becomes the hostess at Renard Duval's gambling house and earns the exotic sobriquet "La Belle Russe" ("the beautiful Russian"). She soon runs away to France with wealthy artist Robert St. Omar and gives birth to a daughter, but after a few years, when St. Omar loses everything, Beatrice deserts him and their child and returns to Duval. St. Omar then places their daughter in a French convent, returns to London, and wounds Duval in a duel. Thinking he has killed the gambler, he enlists in the army and is sent off to India. Later, he regains his wealth and becomes engaged to an heiress. However, Beatrice shoots St. Omar just before his wedding, and although he recovers, the heiress wants nothing more to do with him. Meanwhile, Geraldine, forced to go to work, is injured in a fire in a shirtwaist factory and, thinking she may die, entrusts her husband's photograph and letters to her sister. When Lady Calthorpe, now remorseful over the way she treated her son, advertises to find her daughter-in-law, Beatrice assumes her sister's place. Philip Calthorpe, who has been serving in the army in India, returns home and fails to recognize that Beatrice is impersonating his wife. However, St. Omar, who had befriended Philip in the army, unmasks Beatrice, and Philip Calthorpe orders her out of the house. Calthorpe reunites with Geraldine, who has now recovered from her injuries, and St. Omar reclaims his daughter from the convent.

He then disguises himself as a Buddha idol. As Bavahari dances on stage, the High Priest kills her in front of the audience.

Torn between her love for the prince and her love of Russia when the revolutionaries order her to slay her husband, Lisza's devotion to the cause triumphs and she dynamites her house, meeting her death along with the prince's.

Stark saves her, but because of his exertions, lapses into unconsciousness. Zara, now the reigning Princess since Majah died in the storm, learns that the black pearl buried with him can save Stark. She steals it and Stark recovers and leaves, but Zara dies holding off the angry natives, led by Pulke, who accidentally spear her while trying to recover the pearl.

Having met the handsome American army captain, Paul Winter, in Manila, Maria scorns Diablo's advances, and later, he is forcefully escorted from the house. Furious, Diablo organizes a group of rebels, who kill Maria's father and hold her a prisoner in her own home. When Captain Winter hears of the revolt, he rushes to Maria's aid but is himself captured. Reinforcements soon arrive from the American army post, and in the fighting, the house is set ablaze. Diablo is about to grab Maria when Captain Winter enters and shoots the rebel down. The Americans finally emerge victorious, and Maria wins her dashing captain.

When Silvia's subsequent quarrel with Gioconda becomes a fight, Gioconda attempts to destroy Lucio's statue, but it falls on Silvia and is saved. Silvia, however, is crippled for life. Because of this, Lucio's sanity is affected and he becomes a raving maniac. Later, cast aside by her "man of the world," Gioconda also descends into madness.

Fearful that her stepson will expose her, Lady Audley breaks into his apartment and steals some incriminating love letters that she had written to George. As her guilty conscience grows, her acts become more desperate until George, who was rescued from the well by the coachman, makes a timely appearance and causes her to fall dead from fright.

The death of her baby causes her to sink to the lowest depths, where she is found by Felix in his search for a model to represent the end of bad-choice path. The appearance of Sinclair and his fiancee at the studio brings Mary a desire for revenge and she forces Sinclair to set her up in an apartment and service her never-ending desire for money. To do so, Sinclair is forced to steal and, with evidence of his crime, Mary makes him promise to marry her. But on the morning of the wedding Mary comes to the church and tells all. Sinclair departs in disgrace and Felix goes to comfort poor Mary.

In doing so she eventually schemes away her child's happiness by marrying her to Prince Zuroff. Some time before she was introduced to the Prince, Vere met and fell in love with Lucien Correze, an opera singer, who became attracted to her. Told by her mother that she must sever her friendship with the singer and marry the Russian Prince, Vere heartbroken, leaves Correze, and her wedding to the Prince is a social event. Soon after her marriage Vere discovers that the Prince is harboring his mistress, Duchess De Sonnaz, under the same roof. A scene follows, after which the Prince banishes his wife, together with her faithful German nurse, to a Russian monastery. Shortly after her incarceration she is followed to the retreat by Correze and Lord Jura, the latter a friend of her mother's. Correze entreats Vere to leave the place and go with him. She is about to succumb to his impassioned plea when the Prince enters the room. Words are followed by a duel in which the Prince and Lord Jura are both killed. The Princess, free, marries Correze.

She goes there working as the secretary to Lady Constance Bromley, and once there, learns that Ralston is her employer's son and also that he is married. Interested in the Duke of Rutledge, Olga makes Ralston introduce her to him. After Ralston becomes obnoxious in his advances, Olga becomes the duke's private secretary, impressing him when she flirts with a Spanish diplomat to make him sign some papers. When the duke's insane wife escapes from her secluded room in the castle, Olga stops her from killing the duke. The duchess' subsequent fatal heart attack brought on by intense jealousy allows Olga to marry the duke.

He stays at the bank at night to study, but is unable to take a course at college owing to his poverty. He sees a way for his ambition to be gratified and takes the money. His wife refuses to go with him, so he deserts her and his small daughter and goes away. Some time later we see him in a strange town living under an assumed name. His ambition has been gratified and through the good will of the political boss he has been made a judge. He falls in love with the daughter of his friend, the boss, but is deterred from marriage by the thought of his wife whom he had deserted. In the meantime Mrs. Stevens has become destitute and unable to support her daughter. She takes her daughter to an orphan asylum and releases all claim on her. Mrs. Stevens is unable to obtain work and at last is found unconscious and taken to a hospital. Her handbag, containing her identification papers, is lost and picked up by another woman who is in the last stages of exhaustion. The woman succumbs to the cold and on being found is thought to be Mrs. Stevens. Her death as Mrs. Stevens is reported to the papers. Judge Harding (formerly Stevens) sees the report of the death and marries the daughter of the boss. The boss decides to run Judge Harding for governor of the state, but his choice is attacked very strongly by a young lawyer, Norris. The boss and Harding try to buy Norris, but finding that he cannot be reached they decide to "frame up" his sweetheart in order to break his determination to prevent the election of Harding. They get her into trouble and Judge Harding is appointed to try the case. He is conducting the case in a very severe manner with a decided feeling against the prisoner. The superintendent of the orphan asylum has followed the course of the little girl's life and comes to the city to see her. She recognizes Mrs. Stevens as the woman who left the child at the orphanage and takes her to see the trial. As Mrs. Stevens enters she recognizes in Judge Harding the man who deserted her so many years ago. While the jury have retired to settle the case Mrs. Stevens accuses Judge Harding. The sudden excitement causes an attack of heart failure just as the jury return with a verdict of "Not Guilty."

When Francesca learns that Antoine plans to marry Cecily, she threatens to expose him, but he convinces Cecily that Francesca and the artist are married. Cecily then consents to marry Antoine. After Francesca and the artist are sent to the galleys unjustly for theft, Antoine is exposed. When he tries to kidnap their child, Francesca shoots him, whereupon Cecily marries the artist.

After Chabin finds them and fights Auchat, Blanchette sees Etienne returning from the war, blind. She takes him to a country cottage where she nurses him and poses as he sculpts her image by touch. When Auchat comes to kill Etienne, Blanchette kills Auchat. Chabin arrives and, seeing Blanchette's happiness, tells the police that he killed Auchat, who was attempting to rob the house.
