Meanwhile, Oliver returns, having discovered Gregory's duplicity, and in the ensuing fight between them Gregory is killed, thus freeing Mary to turn to the count.

Before Lotus succumbs to the deadly fumes, Komo arrives, and in the ensuing fight, Stanwood is locked in Lotus's room and dies by the deadly smoke that he had intended for Lotus.

Finally, Jackie realizes that she only feels friendship for Pierre, and he and Mary go East to start a new life.

When they finally escape the next day, the two are hard-pressed to explain to their respective mates where they have spent the night, until a doctor comes along and explains that the lunatic was his patient and that he will pay damages for their inconvenience. With this satisfactory explanation, the couples are reconciled, and the damages Bill collects save his company.

After a few days Prince Narr falls in love with Sir George's daughter, Beth, and asks for her hand in marriage. Sir George does not believe in intermarriage between the white and dark races and refuses the prince's offer of his hand. This arouses the latter's displeasure and he also becomes intensely jealous of Grant, who has saved Beth from death during a ride behind the hounds. To avenge himself Prince Narr presents Sir George with a jeweled dagger, and through hypnotic suggestion commands Sir George to commit murder. The crime is really committed by a servant of the Prince, but Sir George is made to believe himself guilty. He is forced, while under the spell, to write a confession across Beth's forehead, which confession is in indelible ink. This at first fades out, but later reappears and can only be removed by a solution concealed in the dagger. The latter weapon is stolen by Claypool, a notorious criminal, and brought to America, where the chief characters follow in due time.

In fact, Dodd is a meek old man whose scandalous diary was pure fantasy, and the only hostile member of the family is Dodd's greedy brother Jerry, who was the only sympathetic character in Dodd's diary. Jeanne falls in love with Dodd's nephew Kent, though she dutifully urges him to marry Hazel Jenkins, a woman whom Jeanne believes Kent has wronged. Finally Sarah Ross, the alleged mother of Dodd's child, ends Jeanne's suspicions by denying that she had ever had a daughter. After foiling Jerry's plan to usurp the family fortune, Jeanne confesses her charade and accepts Kent's love. Dodd likewise admits that his diary is a fake and proposes to Sarah.

Aldrich is arrested for the murder until a half-witted shepherd confesses that he killed Beaulieu to avenge an old grudge. Aldrich is then elected to rid the town of the smugglers and wins Marie for his wife.

They take refuge at Walter's country estate, where the detectives intercept them again. It is then revealed that Judith is Walter's sister and Vera his wife, the theft was his first offense and Judith and Vera were helping him escape punishment. When Walter returns the bonds, charges are dropped, and Judith is free to marry Boone.

Their neighbors in the adjoining room are Britton Hughes and his bride Peggy, who are being pursued by the bride's father. The arrival of Fannie's husband precipitates a panic in the two apartments, during which time, John and Peggy are thrown together. At that moment, Lucille arrives and believes that John is guilty of a real affair. Several complications arise until John's aunt appears and tells her nephew that the will was all a test of his love for Lucille, and when the runaway bride and groom are forgiven, all ends happily.

Out of revenge, he steals an important document from Hagane; believing that his wife has acted in dishonor, Hagane agrees to trade Yuki for the paper. Worn out with grief and struggling against her love for Pierre, Yuki kills herself, and Hagane delivers the body to her true love.

The couple escape during a hurricane, and soon after a yacht arrives with the news that Templeton has been exonerated of murder charges. Their problems thus resolved, they return to America to wed.

Meanwhile, the dead body of Na Fa Kowa is found, accompanied by a note proving that the Indian was the baby's mother. In the spring, when Douglas recovers from his wounds, he and Suzanne are married.

Juliantimo follows her, though, and on opening night he positions himself in a box above the stage, shoots Aurora, and kills himself. She recovers, but loses her voice, and with the loss of her talents, her friends desert her. Lonely, she returns home, where she is welcomed by her family and her childhood sweetheart Phineas Scudder. The traumatic death of Aurora's mother restores her singing voice, but she finally realizes that true love comes but once to every woman, and she chooses to stay in the village as Phineas' wife.

Howard cannot endure Lita's lack of breeding and she resents his cold, superior attitude. They quarrel frequently and she offers him a chance for a divorce by deliberately going back to Goldberg. Howard, stung by his jealousy, follows, threatening to kill Goldberg. The latter assures him no harm has come to Lita. He finds her and she tells him of her coming child. Winnie's father wishes her to marry Sidney Ullman, the son of a wealthy business associate. Jan disapproves of Peter's plan and, after much arguing, Peter finally realizes from his past experience that his daughter should marry for love rather than money.

But he, too, opens himself to criticism from his flock, who protest his closeness with the show people. Eventually, Darton's boyfriend arrives and the pair become closer. The parson fades from the scene as a possible mate for Darton, who ends up winning the hearts of the townspeople.

All goes well until a raid by the United States Secret Service discloses that the Scandia Corporation is a bogus company that has been defrauding people through the mails. The erstwhile plumbers are arrested and injured in a fight while escaping, and then land in the hospital. Finally matters are cleared up; they are reunited with their sweethearts and promise to forget high society.

With the aid of a marijuana-addled young bandit named Sanchez, Isola frees the crew, which subdues the Mexicans. Isola and Paul sail away together to the United States on the schooner.

Jimmy is reinstated by Jules, a half-witted Indian who convinces the inspector of his innocence, and he regains Molly's love.

Thinking he was murdered, Audre's vaqueros storm Don Luis's house, but Erolinda holds them at bay until Audre, merely wounded, appears and pacifies his men. He kisses Erolinda in their sight, thus claiming her as his bride.

There she becomes a highly-efficient businesswoman in a department store, spurred on by her colleague and admirer Michael Fenger, who is trapped in a loveless marriage. A former school friend, Clarence Hyle, also attempts to woo her. Later, Theodore, deserted by his wife, returns from Europe with his baby daughter and comes to live with Fanny. When he eventually becomes a successful performer, he leaves Fanny a message saying that he is returning to his wife. After so much self-sacrifice, Fanny decides to live only for herself and is about to sail to Honolulu with Fenger when Clarence makes her realize that her true happiness lies with him.
