- DirectorJohn HughesStarsEmilio EstevezJudd NelsonMolly RingwaldFive high school students meet in Saturday detention and discover how they have a great deal more in common than they thought.VHS; A. I had no idea what to expect coming into this one. Immediately I was drawn into the silence of the hall and the intense tension. This story ended up being thrilling, fun, emotional, and inspiring. Even though the high school experience has changed significantly since 1984, this film still captures the fears, hormones, and secrets of youth in revolt. One of the few movies I've seen that dissolves each villain by the end, exceptionally unravelling character growth and transformation in just 90 minutes. Whereas it might not be something parents would approve, I'd put this on my required reading list for any high school student.
- DirectorAndrew StantonLee UnkrichStarsAlbert BrooksEllen DeGeneresAlexander GouldAfter his son is captured in the Great Barrier Reef and taken to Sydney, a timid clownfish sets out on a journey to bring him home.3DBD+BD+DVD; A. Classic movie from my childhood that always inspired me. Watching it as an adult is a whole new movie. Thomas Newman's soundtrack is immortal. Funny, cute, charming. A masterpiece.
- DirectorLarry CharlesStarsBill MaherTal BachmanJonathan BouldenBill Maher's take on the current state of world religion.DVD; A. Saw a preview for this and immediately was interested. Found a copy at the thrift store a month later - score! Bill Maher is quick, witty, and inquisitive while keeping a firm but fair skepticism about religion and its role in society as a whole. He had a clear and unfair bias against Islam, repeatedly showcasing the extremism as the norm, but his criticism of religion in general is valid and closely mirrors my own personal philosophy. It's quite entertaining to see how quickly the institutional "goons" swarm his crew and kick them out of several locations, highlighting the fragility and insecurity of many organized religions. This was an entertaining and somewhat informative documentary that held the microphone up to both the devout nutjobs and the level-headed sages. The Catholic man at the Vatican was a shining example of how a wise man should view religion. The deleted scenes and full monologues would have made an excellent extended director's cut and were worth the watch. This makes my required reading list for both the agnostics/atheists and the religious folk who aren't too insecure about their faith.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsMatthew ModineR. Lee ErmeyVincent D'OnofrioA pragmatic U.S. Marine observes the dehumanizing effects the Vietnam War has on his fellow recruits from their brutal boot camp training to the bloody street fighting in Hue.DVD; A. Wow. I had only seen clips from the opening scene, and I had NO idea what to expect. That was an absolute gift, because this film entranced me. Between flashbacks from scouting that echoed the militaristic vignettes and the wild twists that unfolded throughout the film, I found myself fully engaged in this story of two different perspectives of marines in the Vietnam War. This is an excellent display of the eroding of the soul that war does to people, both on the base and in the battlefield. I would almost put this on my "watch this before you seriously consider enlisting" required viewing list, but that seems like a stretch. Regardless, let's just say this movie painted a portrait of everything I envision (and loathe) when I think about the military.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsLeonardo DiCaprioJoseph Gordon-LevittElliot PageA thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a C.E.O., but his tragic past may doom the project and his team to disaster.DVD; A. This was always a favorite of mine since it came out. The soundtrack is another masterpiece from Hans Zimmer, Christopher Nolan's writing and direction is magnificent and trilling. The intricacies of the plot are worth revisiting after the first watch, and Cobb's relationship with Mal (or rather his memory of her) brings a brilliant tension to the fundamental (un)reality of the big job. This is a clear winner for the best picture of 2010 in my opinion.
- DirectorGore VerbinskiStarsJohnny DeppGeoffrey RushOrlando BloomBlacksmith Will Turner teams up with eccentric pirate "Captain" Jack Sparrow to save his love, the governor's daughter, from Jack's former pirate allies, who are now undead.DVD; A. Captain Jack Sparrow is a legend! Some of his quips are lost on younger viewers and make this fun to watch again as an adult. The story is remarkably unique, and Hans Zimmer & Klaus Badelt did a stellar job on the soundtrack.
- DirectorMike JudgeStarsRon LivingstonJennifer AnistonDavid HermanThree company workers who hate their jobs decide to rebel against their greedy boss.DVD; A-. Truly required viewing for anyone in corporate America. Even after all this time, I still find moments particularly relatable. I couldn't tell you how many times this film is referenced in the office.
- DirectorGus Van SantStarsRobin WilliamsMatt DamonBen AffleckWill Hunting, a janitor at M.I.T., has a gift for mathematics, but needs help from a psychologist to find direction in his life.DVD; A-. Thought-provoking, touching, and inspiring. Robin Williams and Matt Damon work well together. A few trite moments but a very compelling plot.
- DirectorTerry JonesStarsJohn CleeseTerry GilliamEric IdleThe comedy team takes a look at life in all of its stages in their own uniquely silly way.VHS; A-. Chaotic and at times disturbing, this Monty Python flick actually keeps it together incredibly well despite the wackiness. There are several hilarious moments sprinkled in each fourth-wall-breaking chapter of this book of life.
- DirectorPeter WeirStarsJim CarreyEd HarrisLaura LinneyAn insurance salesman discovers his whole life is actually a reality TV show.VHS; A-. A truly gripping story about a man who starts to uncover that his world is falling apart. The play on the product placement repetend is so much more obvious as an adult, and the phony endorsements are perfectly distasteful. Carrey's performance is stellar!
- DirectorJim AbrahamsDavid ZuckerJerry ZuckerStarsRobert HaysJulie HagertyLeslie NielsenAfter the crew becomes sick with food poisoning, a neurotic ex-fighter pilot must safely land a commercial airplane full of passengers.DVD; B+. The humor in this film strikes a chord with me, and Leslie Nielson's performance is outstanding. It's silly while staying grounded in reality, and holds up after all this time. I'm still amazed at what a PG rating was in the 80s.
- DirectorMark WatersStarsJamie Lee CurtisLindsay LohanMark HarmonAn overworked mother and her daughter did not get along. When they switch bodies, each is forced to adapt to the other's life for one freaky Friday.DVD; B+. A timeless classic DCOM. Truly Lohan in her prime; along with Curtis, the duo remarkably fulfills their roles especially after reversal. It's witty and full of silly gags. The "mystical Asian magic" trope is a little weird but it serves the plot well. I still don't know if I like Jake by the end.
- DirectorDavid AmphlettStarsAndrea BocelliSarah BrightmanA concert which took place at the Piazza dei Cavalieri in Pisa in 1997.VHS; B+. Amazing performance by a very talented artist. I like the interviews and scenic shots in between songs. An excellent visual album so to speak. Great background music for an Italian-inspired dinner!
- DirectorStephen ChowStarsStephen ChowWah YuenQiu YuenIn Shanghai, China in the 1940s, a wannabe gangster aspires to join the notorious "Axe Gang" while residents of a housing complex exhibit extraordinary powers in defending their turf.DVD; B. A totally bizarre film I bought solely because of the obviously bootleg mastering. I was pleasantly surprised with a gripping plot and excellent progression. The humor most certainly did not get lost in translation!
- DirectorAlex ProyasStarsWill SmithBridget MoynahanBruce GreenwoodIn 2035, a technophobic cop investigates a crime that may have been perpetrated by a robot, which leads to a larger threat to humanity.DVD; B. An excellent performance by Smith and a well-executed telling of Asimov's vision. Quotable and thrilling, I always liked this one. Still holds up!
- DirectorPeter SegalStarsSteve CarellAnne HathawayAlan ArkinMaxwell Smart, a highly intellectual but bumbling spy working for the CONTROL agency, is tasked with preventing a terrorist attack from rival spy agency KAOS.DVD; B; Funny, silly, and enjoyable for all ages. A cast of excellent A-list actors with stellar performances from Carell, Hathaway, and The Rock. This one isn't supposed to be taken seriously, and with that in mind, it makes for an entertaining 2 hours.
- DirectorEtan CohenStarsWill FerrellKevin HartAlison BrieWhen millionaire James King is jailed for fraud and bound for San Quentin, he turns to Darnell Lewis to prep him to go behind bars.DVD; B. I came in with zero expectations knowing nothing about this movie, and I was pleasantly surprised! Hart and Ferrell are an excellent duo, and the writing was wacky and wild enough to keep me entertained. I think it made some interesting remarks on race and class while keeping me engaged and entertained. Hart's impressions and jokes almost felt like a comedy special; at times he commands the spotlight with goofball Ferrell on the side. A few bits were a little dicey, but it definitely earned the R rating. Despite his prejudices, I bet my dad would like this one.
- DirectorEric DarnellTom McGrathStarsChris RockBen StillerDavid SchwimmerA group of animals who have spent all their life in a New York zoo end up in the jungles of Madagascar, and must adjust to living in the wild.DVD; B. A classic I remember from my childhood that still holds up. The animation is obviously dated with rather plain textures and single light sources with minimal shading, but it still shines hailing from a golden era of animation. Waking up to "Zoosters Breakout" in the morning is always a pleasure; Hans Zimmer killed it as always. Stiller, Rock, Schwimmer, and Pinkett Smith make a great voicing cast, and the plot is engaging enough with some clever jokes for the grownups thrown in. Whereas this franchise probably should have stopped here, I get why the penguins were so successful. The "Move It Move It" earworm is rather infectious, but the palate is cleansed with plenty of high-budget tracks from the likes of the Bee Gees and Sinatra. It's a great kids' movie that's still fun and relatable later in life.
- DirectorMichael MooreStarsMichael MooreGeorge W. BushBen AffleckMichael Moore's view on what happened to the United States after September 11 and how the Bush Administration allegedly used the tragic event to push forward its agenda for unjust wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.DVD; B. I was a little circumspect that this might be some conspiracy take on the 9/11 disaster, but in fact it had very little to do with the events of September 11th. This documentary shines a light on the horrors of the Iraq war and the completely baseless justifications for invasion. It is graphic but reasonably so, showing the many civilians and soldiers killed for nothing but corruption and greed of people in power. The relationship between the Bin Ladens and the Bushes is already pretty troubling, but the fact that there is such a significant investment of Saudi Arabia in US politics explains a LOT.
- DirectorPeter WeirStarsRobin WilliamsRobert Sean LeonardEthan HawkeMaverick teacher John Keating returns in 1959 to the prestigious New England boys' boarding school where he was once a star student, using poetry to embolden his pupils to new heights of self-expression.VHS; B. An entertaining story of youth in revolt and soul-searching. Robin Williams is excellent in this role, and plays the disruptive teacher brilliantly. A bit dark but justifiably so, the film speaks of sensitivities suppressed by the forces of conformity. It's silly and serious; you might find a new favorite poem as a result of Williams' masterful delivery. It feels a little old fashioned in today's reality, but the message still holds up.
- DirectorJohn HustonStarsHumphrey BogartMary AstorGladys GeorgeSan Francisco private detective Sam Spade takes on a case that involves him with three eccentric criminals, a gorgeous liar and their quest for a priceless statuette, with the stakes rising after his partner is murdered.VHS; B. I quite like the noir aesthetic, and it sounds like this film was a pioneer in the art. Unsurprisingly, a fair bit of dialogue simply gets lost in translation more than eight decades later. However, I was impressed with the skillful delivery of some particularly esoteric lines. Sam Spade has a quick wit that makes everything he says interesting, whether or not you catch everything!
- DirectorTom ShadyacStarsJim CarreyJennifer AnistonMorgan FreemanA whiny news reporter is given the chance to step into God's shoes.DVD; B-. It's a little corny and dated, but Carrey & Aniston make a great duo, and Freeman shines in one of his many "God" roles. The gags are funny and the puns make me chuckle, but the underlying message of the movie is a little tired despite the good performance. All things considered, it's a decent film with a star-studded cast, and it's held together pretty well.
- DirectorAdam McKayStarsWill FerrellChristina ApplegateSteve CarellIn the 1970s, an anchorman's stint as San Diego's top-rated newsreader is challenged when an ambitious newswoman becomes his co-anchor.DVD; B-. A classic Will Ferrell comedy, this film is still a highly-quoted legend. It decently makes light of the kind of workplace sexism you might expect from the 70s without glorifying it, and the tension between Burgundy and Corningstone works really well. The resolution feels a little flimsy, but the constant conflict between them leads to some entertaining moments.
- DirectorGeorge Roy HillStarsPaul NewmanRobert RedfordRobert ShawTwo grifters team up to pull off the ultimate con.VHS; B-. My intro to this title was the motion picture soundtrack on vinyl. I love ragtime, and The Entertainer is married to this release, so I was interested. To be frank, the film is a bit hard to follow as the dialogue is fast paced and riddled with both 30s slang and was performed over fifty years ago. That being said, it's a pretty interesting and funny story about a long string of cons that ultimately lead to the big sting. I must say, among all things the transitions date this film most obviously – at times it looks like an overdone powerpoint presentation! That being said, it was engaging and entertaining; I'd watch it again and hopefully catch a some things I missed the first time through!
- DirectorKevin CostnerStarsKevin CostnerMary McDonnellGraham GreeneLieutenant John Dunbar, assigned to a remote western Civil War outpost, finds himself engaging with a neighbouring Sioux settlement, causing him to question his own purpose.VHS; B-. Set in the 18th century, the story itself whisks you away to a time and place long forgotten. It's an inspiring and heartwarming story that respects native culture more than you might expect for films of the time. Still a classic after all this time.
- DirectorJames L. BrooksStarsJack NicholsonHelen HuntGreg KinnearA single mother and waitress, a misanthropic author, and a gay artist form an unlikely friendship after the artist is assaulted in a robbery.VHS; B-. A bit hard to follow at first, the plot does unfold a compelling story about friendship and romance in the most unlikely scenario. Despite the films message about "settling," it still has its charm. Some of the lines really show the film's age.
- DirectorKen FinklemanStarsRobert HaysJulie HagertyLloyd BridgesA faulty computer causes a passenger space shuttle to head straight for the Sun. Can Ted Striker save the day and get the shuttle back on track - again?DVD; C+. An homage to the original that didn't stray too far from the silliness of the first. Some of the reused scenes felt a little out of place. William Shatner did a great job; given the length of these films, you might as well watch them back to back!
- DirectorGore VerbinskiStarsJohnny DeppOrlando BloomKeira KnightleyJack Sparrow races to recover the heart of Davy Jones to avoid enslaving his soul to Jones' service, as other friends and foes seek the heart for their own agenda as well.BD; C+. I think I misremembered a lot of things that happened in this film - it was actually At World's End I was thinking of. That being said, this film was an entertaining sequel to the original but did not prove to be as memorable or charming as the original. I recall liking the third movie more.
- DirectorTom ShadyacStarsJim CarreyMaura TierneyAmanda DonohoeA pathological liar-lawyer finds his career turned upside down when he inexplicably cannot physically lie for 24 whole hours.DVD; C+. Jim Carrey in his element! It's a fun concept that makes a few jabs at the habitual white lies of human interaction, and particularly the cunning manipulation of the truth performed by lawyers. The film is a bit silly and charming, and it has its share of one-line zingers. However, I find its lack of any real depth an obstacle to feeling anything more than careless amusement. That said, this movie is the source of more memes than I remembered!
- DirectorEvan GoldbergSeth RogenStarsJames FrancoSeth RogenRandall ParkDave Skylark and his producer Aaron Rapaport run the celebrity tabloid show "Skylark Tonight". When they land an interview with a surprise fan, North Korean dictator Jong-Un Kim, they are recruited by the CIA to assassinate him.DVD; C+. Bad accents and plenty of racial insensitivities, but I liked the plot and the wacky antics that the characters get into. Fun to watch; I'd watch it again.
- DirectorDavid ZuckerStarsLeslie NielsenPriscilla PresleyO.J. SimpsonIncompetent police Detective Frank Drebin must foil an attempt to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II.DVD; C+. As much as I love Leslie Nielson, I just don't think this film had strong enough writing to really allow him to shine. The gags are funny, but the story didn't have me exactly invested.
- DirectorBrett RatnerStarsJackie ChanChris TuckerKen LeungA loyal and dedicated Hong Kong Inspector teams up with a reckless and loudmouthed L.A.P.D. detective to rescue the Chinese Consul's kidnapped daughter, while trying to arrest a dangerous crime lord along the way.DVD; C+. Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker make an entertaining duo, and there are some silly moments throughout the movie that cut through the action. Carter is a mess as a flawed protagonist, but his chemistry with Lee makes up for it. There are no subtitles for the Chinese, but I was delighted to understand most of the basic phrases. The bloopers include Tucker trying to say "谢谢你" which is pretty funny. It's a fun warp back to 1998 and a respectable "blending of cultures" action duo film.
- DirectorPeter SegalStarsJack NicholsonAdam SandlerMarisa TomeiDave Buznik is a businessman who is wrongly sentenced to an anger management program, where he meets an aggressive instructor.VHS; C+. Sort of a cringe-comedy that has become a source of memes over the years. While frustrating at times, there are some funny moments that still hold up.
- DirectorJeff TremaineStarsJohnny KnoxvilleBam MargeraChris PontiusJohnny Knoxville and his band of maniacs perform a variety of stunts and gross-out gags on the big screen for the first time.DVD; C+. Crude, at times disturbing, and entirely inappropriate. Some gags involving unsuspecting targets come across as particularly disrespectful, but when the degeneracy is mostly confined among the crew it usually brings laughter if not wincing in empathetic pain or cringing at sheer stupidity. For 2002, I can't believe this ever made it to film; but I'm sure the crew felt the same way. Many of the deleted scenes would have been better in the theatrical cut, and the failed ending made little sense without seeing the whole thing. This film covers the spectrum of light hearted fun and pure, delinquent chaos, but odds are there's at least one skit you would get a laugh out of.
- DirectorTamra DavisStarsDave ChappelleGuillermo DiazJim BreuerThe story of three not so bright men who come up with a series of crazy schemes to get a friend out of jail.VHS; C+. Silly, late 90s stoner flick that actually does a decent job at telling a story without taking itself too seriously. Lots of cameos, and enough funny moments to keep my attention.
- DirectorEthan CoenJoel CoenStarsBrad PittFrances McDormandGeorge ClooneyA disk containing mysterious information from a CIA agent ends up in the hands of two unscrupulous and daft gym employees who attempt to sell it.DVD; C+. A bit of an odd plot with some funny and ridiculous moments and a progression that never felt predictable. A decent demonstration of the bumbling idiot protagonists and the trouble they get into. The resolution left something to be desired.
- DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsBob HoskinsChristopher LloydJoanna CassidyWhen a cartoon rabbit is accused of murder, he enlists the help of a burnt out private investigator to prove his innocence.VHS; C. I like the concept, but I can't deny that parts of the film are challenging to endure. I think that I would hate working with toons more than Valiant. This movie kind of freaked me out as a kid, but as an adult there is a little bit more depth that I missed back then. It's almost strange to see Disney and WB characters animated in a real-world film, but charming in its uniqueness.
- DirectorJake KasdanStarsCameron DiazJason SegelJustin TimberlakeA lazy, incompetent middle school teacher who hates her job, her students, and her co-workers is forced to return to teaching to make enough money for breast implants after her wealthy fiancé dumps her.BD; C-. A story where you constantly hate the main character but they get what they want in the end. Hard to fall in love with this one but it has its moments. Let's be honest, I'd be on Amy Squirrel's side.
- DirectorEvan GoldbergSeth RogenStarsJames FrancoJonah HillSeth RogenSix Los Angeles celebrities are stuck in James Franco's house after a series of devastating events just destroyed the city. Inside, the group not only have to face the apocalypse, but themselves.DVD; D+. So many stars but so little to hold it together. Didn't grab my attention very well. Some funny moments but a forgettable plot.
- DirectorJason FriedbergAaron SeltzerStarsCarmen ElectraVanessa LacheyNicole ParkerOver the course of one evening, an unsuspecting group of twenty-somethings find themselves bombarded by a series of natural disasters and catastrophic events.DVD; D-. It has its moments but is otherwise a film with almost no appreciable plot. The editing and audio mixing is amateur, and unfathomably many sequences would have been funny if not taken too far ad nauseam. It's sort of funny to be taken back to a glimpse of 2008 and its satire culture, but this is objectively in the worst of its category. I got this movie for a dollar and feel a little ripped off. That being said, it's not entirely offensive. I'd caution anyone to reconsider before watching this one.
