- DirectorAkihiko ShiotaStarsSatoshi TsumabukiKô ShibasakiKiichi NakaiA female warrior who was raised as a man joins a young samurai's quest to recover 48 of his body parts from 48 demons and to avenge her parents death.Bizarro movie about a samurai who's father sacrificed 48 of his body parts to 48 demons for world domination! It's a story of how he reclaims his body and takes revenge on his father. Sci-fi samurai !
- DirectorBenny ChanStarsShaoqun YuChen ZhiuiXing YuAfter ambushing and killing his rival, losing everything in the process, dispirited warlord Hou Jie turns to a Shaolin monastery seeking salvation.Beautiful movie about coming to peace with oneself. And, great action - Shaolin style of course
- DirectorWoo-Ping YuenStarsRongguang YuDonnie YenJean WangA martial artist/doctor steals from the corrupt authorities as a masked thief to give to the poor while another martial artist/doctor is forced to hunt him down. But a major threat unites them as a powerful and traitorous shaolin monk takes over the authorities.Classic Kung-Fu, thank you Tarantino! The great Donnie Yen stars opposite :) Period piece. Good action and a good story.
- DirectorWoo-Ping YuenStarsWenzhuo ZhaoXun ZhouAndy OnChina, 1861: After rescuing the Qing prince from rebels, General Su retires to start a martial arts school. His foster brother betrays him and Su barely survives. Su has a new enemy to defeat. It's a love story, really. Fantastic characters, good fighting, and even tears.
- DirectorTeddy ChanStarsXueqi WangTony Ka Fai LeungJun HuIn 1905, revolutionist Sun Yat-Sen visits Hong Kong to discuss plans with Tongmenghui members to overthrow the Qing dynasty. But when they find out that assassins have been sent to kill him, they assemble a group of protectors to prevent any attacks.Great movie based on a Chinese history - the Chinese cultural revolution that began, I think, around the start of the 1900's. Very interesting. Dr. Sun!! There is no bad guy, there is no good guy. The way things went, the good guys became bad guys; bad guys became good guys. Good action throughout but the fighting was secondary to the cause! A nicely told account of a historical event that I knew very little about. Worth watching.
- DirectorWilson YipStarsDonnie YenSimon YamSiu-Wong FanDuring the Japanese invasion of China, a wealthy martial artist is forced to leave his home when his city is occupied. With little means of providing for themselves, Ip Man and the remaining members of the city must find a way to survive.Based on a true story of a truly remarkable man - Ip Man! What a gentle soul - inside a fighting machine! Donnie Yen strikes again!
- DirectorWilson YipStarsDonnie YenXiaoming HuangSammo Kam-Bo HungCentering on Ip Man's migration to Hong Kong in 1949 as he attempts to propagate his discipline of Wing Chun martial arts.Which do I like better, Ip Man I or Ip Man II .... obviously, this is the second part of Ip Man's life and it's just as action-packed as the first! The story is a good one, but I'm in it for the fight scenes - they do not disappoint.
- DirectorSngmoo LeeStarsJang Dong-gunKate BosworthGeoffrey RushA warrior-assassin is forced to hide in a small town in the American Badlands after refusing a mission.Stylized samurai meets western movie. Beautifully done! A Samurai leaves Japan after committing the ultimate betrayal of his clan - he could not kill the last of their enemy. Assassins follow! He ends up in a western town, perfectly happy, until ....
- DirectorStephen ChowStarsStephen ChowWah YuenQiu YuenIn Shanghai, China in the 1940s, a wannabe gangster aspires to join the notorious "Axe Gang" while residents of a housing complex exhibit extraordinary powers in defending their turf.Brilliant!
- DirectorGuy MosheStarsJosh HartnettDemi MooreWoody HarrelsonThe story of a a young man who has spent his life searching for revenge only to find himself up against a bigger challenge than he originally bargained for.Strange movie. Equally strange cast. Stylized gunfighter-samurai-gangster movie.
- DirectorPrachya PinkaewStarsTony JaaPhetthai VongkumlaoPumwaree YodkamolWhen the head of a statue sacred to a village is stolen, a young martial artist goes to the big city and finds himself taking on the underworld to retrieve it.Starring the amazing Tony Jaa - this man is incredible. So athletic. Skillz. Mad, mad skillz. His cousin in the film reminds me of someone I know, I'm sure it will remind you of someone you know. The girl side kick has an incredibly annoying voice. I hate her :) The fight scenes are amazing. Tony Jaa is amazing. A lot of fighting. His Muay Thai style is super fast, super strong. And he has soul xx Funny part: The car chase scene, they're driving around in these little Thai taxis! Unless you're from Thailand, been to Thailand, I don't know, it's just kinda funny to watch these little three-wheeler rikshaws scream around town.
- DirectorMichael MakStarsTony Leung Chiu-waiMichelle YeohJoey WangDynamo Michelle Yeoh stars as a loyalist who attempts to keep the King's empire from being overthrown by a revolutionary group.Michelle Yeoh and Jet Li star. This is classic Kung Fu movie to me. Love triange - secret alliances - magik. I was not in love with this movie. It felt loooong. The fighting is good. Some bloody even. I've never seen Michelle Yeoh so hard and cruel! Skip to the credits - they run through ALL the fight scenes :)
- DirectorRyoo Seung-wanStarsRyu Seung-beomYoon So-yiAhn Sung-kiAs a dorky cop falls in with five Tao masters who admire his c'hi, an ancient foe comes looking for them all.Asian sensibilities this movie. Fun story. During an altercation, in full passion mode, he unlocks his chi and his chi is the key. He has the potential to be a master! A warrior from the centuries-ago past returns to destroy the world and it's up to the seven masters to stop him. The fighting is good and it wasn't as predictable as I thought it would be.
- DirectorWoo-Ping YuenStarsJacky CheungCarol 'Do Do' ChengSimon YamA team of cops get brutally exposed to violence after raiding a drug operation and discovering a link between few members of the police force and an American crime syndicate dealing with drug trafficking.Don't let the synopsis fool you. This was a terrible movie! I kept thinking, it has got to get better, it has to. But it never did. Even the Donnie Yen fight scenes couldn't get me to give this movie a decent rating. Horrible. Maybe its '88ness was too much for me. The extreme gun violence was unncessary. The acid washed, the hair, the acting. And they made a Tiger Cage 2?? ugh. Why?
- DirectorWilson YipStarsYuk Long WongLouis KooIsabella LeongThree young martial arts masters emerge from the back streets of Hong Kong to help the powerless fight injustice.I gave 'modern' Kung Fu movie another shot. I was wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Another awful '88 - no, this was 2006! You would barely notice the nearly 20-year time span. If anything, I would watch this as a comedy.
- DirectorGareth EvansStarsIko UwaisSisca JessicaChristine HakimA young man from the countryside uses his skills in silat martial arts to survive the slave trade.Iko Uwais and Tony Jaa must be one and the same. I don't care what the credit reads, these two are one. With that said, the fighting is fast and furious and this man makes it look so good! Easy story: good guy from the village goes to the city and ..sound familiar? Trouble finds him. There are little surprises in the plot but just watching this guy do his thing is entertaining enough.
Okay, so they are NOT the same person. But they could be twins separated at birth is how alike they are. - DirectorRZAStarsRussell CroweCung LeLucy LiuOn the hunt for a fabled treasure of gold, a band of warriors, assassins, and a rogue British soldier descend upon a village in feudal China, where a humble blacksmith looks to defend himself and his fellow villagers.Meh. This movie was meh. I didn't not like it, but I didn't really like it either. Bottom line, I didn't care. I didn't care about any of the characters. The story had such potential and it just never got there. It was lacking. Unneccessary sex and violence too. I completely saw Rza's love for Kung Fu movies - all the elements were there, but it was shallow. So meh.
- DirectorTakashi MiikeStarsKoji YakushoTakayuki YamadaYûsuke IseyaA group of assassins come together for a suicide mission to kill an evil lord.My god this movie is a blood bath! The story has depth, sure, but it was hard to watch there was so.much.blood. So much. And it was samurai blood so you know it's swords and body slicing in every direction. Dirt roads are soaked in blood. Soaked muddy blood. Bloody, bloody movie.
- DirectorSiu-Tung ChingStarsJet LiShengyi HuangRaymond LamA master monk tries to protect a naive young physician from a thousand-year-old snake demon. A contest of psychic powers results in mayhem.Jet Li returns as a demon hunting Buddhist monk! I think 90% of this movie was CGI. Cool effects. Of course there's a love story! Familiar story of immortals messing with humans and the trouble they cause. And redemption, Buddhist redemption. Good action as well.
- DirectorPeter Ho-Sun ChanStarsDonnie YenTakeshi KaneshiroTang WeiA papermaker gets involved with a murder case concerning two criminals leading to a determined detective suspecting him and the former's vicious father searching for him.Hell yeah! The Yen is back! Okay, we've been through this story before - stranger comes to town, stranger saves the day, and stranger is found out for who he really is. BUT it gets better. It gets gnarly. Dramatic feud - fighting - love. The crucial scene ... I get chills just thinking of it.
- DirectorPatrick LeungStarsWenzhuo ZhaoMi YangSiu-Wong FanIn early Republican China, rumors were going around about the treasure in Wudang Mountain. An American conspirator took his well-trained kung fu daughter to Wudang by sponsoring a Taoist martial arts competition, to steal the treasure. Not a bad movie .. a martial arts tournament takes place on the sacred Wu Dang mountain - that's one story line. Treasure hunters battle Kung Fu masters for sacred objects - that's another story line. Lowly farmer is chosen to represent Wu Dang, meets girl - another story line. Love and death and fighting. If they had focused on the farmer and the tournament, it would have been a much better film. The fight scenes are good though and I did like how they incorporated the practice of sleeping Kung Fu.
- DirectorStephen FungStarsHark-On FungXiaochao YuanStephen FungYang travels to Chen Village to learn a powerful form of Tai Chi. Though villagers are forbidden from teaching outsiders, Yang becomes their best hope for survival when a man arrives with a plan to build a railroad through the village.pertty good .. didn't realize this is a trilogy.. interesting story and good Kung Fu!
- DirectorNopporn WartinNopporn WatinStarsSeigi OzekiKanokkorn JaicheunSorapong ChatreeBased on a true historic figure during Ayothaya Era, the film depicts the life of Yamada Nagamasa, a Japanese adventurer who gained considerable influence in Thailand and became the governor of Nakhon Si Thammarat province in southern Thailand.Actually, not bad! Pleasantly surprised. The fighting is good - he's a samurai come to Thailand so you've got bloody sword action AND furious Muay Thai. Based on a true historical character as well!
- DirectorHark TsuiStarsJet LiWah YuenCrystal KwokA former Chinese Kung Fu master working in L.A. as a medicine man is targeted by an ex-student, and it's up to one of his Hong Kong disciples, who's visiting America, to defend his master's honor.Like most Kung Fu transition American movies, this was mostly comedy part martial arts :) Asian humor can sometimes be lost in translation and I watched the dubbed version which added to the hilarity. This was in '92 and there's quite a bit of racial stereotyping/slurs throughout the movie. It's an interesting look at how the Chinese view culture in America. That aside, the fighting is good. Jet Li and his rival psycho killer are bad-ass fighters! Not usually a fan of "modern-day" Kung Fu movies, but this one isn't too bad. There are moments where you have to excuse the ridiculousness of what's going on but that's almost what makes it fun to watch, well, that and Jet Li.
- DirectorJean-Marc MinéoStarsJon FooCaroline DuceyMichaël CohenAfter witnessing the brutal murder of his parents, a young boy is raised by a martial arts master who grooms him to be a lethal killer. Some 20 years later, it's time to take revenge on the assassins who destroyed his childhood.Wow. What a terrible movie. Many a bad actor in this one. Jon Woo stars (the guy from Tekken) and he's awful. His martial arts skills are good but not impressive. The Thai actors weren't the best either but I don't necessarily expect great acting - I do, however, think that if there is communication going on between two or more Thai peoples then they should be speaking Thai and not English. It was weird which scenes they chose to do in English vs. Thai.
Had they stuck with one story line, I could excuse the bad acting and mediocre Kung Fu, but there were too many tangents and it didn't make much sense.
