Eighties television was a land of new ideas that hadn’t been seen before. It was also a place where old tropes were made shiny and new with a modern sheen that intrigued audiences and would produce classics like the hospital drama St. Elsewhere and the crime drama Hill Street Blues.
It would be a humdinger of a decade within the genre of mystery and detectives. It would see the return of the iconic detective Mike Hammer in a new series and would also bring us the dramedy Moonlighting. We’d also be treated to one of the greatest performances of Sherlock Holmes ever with the amazing Jeremy Brett.
It would also bring us a female detective who, in a world filled with male counterparts, couldn’t catch a break until she made up her own male counterpart in a boss named Remington Steele. The rest, as they say, is history,...

Until the neither disappointing nor remarkable "Frasier" reboot, the beloved sitcom on which it was based had been off the air for almost 20 years. Running from 1993 to 2004, "Frasier" came to represent the gold standard for '90s sitcoms, alongside contemporary hits such as "Friends" and "Seinfeld." A big part of the show's success was that star Kelsey Grammer seemed to have been born to play the titular doctor, portraying his egoism and fastidiousness with the perfect balance of humor and earnestness. But the show was also propelled by a truly stellar supporting cast.
David Hyde Pierce might have thought the script for the "Frasier" pilot was "terrible" at first, but he very quickly realized how well-written the show was and throughout the show's run delivered a consistently brilliant performance as Frasier's equally stuffy brother, Niles. Alongside Peri Gilpin as Frasier's radio producer, Roz, John Mahoney as Frasier and Niles' father,...

Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd had unbeatable chemistry on Moonlighting. In fact, their chemistry could be so volatile the show ultimately could not continue, although the success of Die Hard and other movie offers probably would’ve been an irresistible force for Willis regardless. At least there were five seasons of Moonlighting, all available on DVD and creator Glenn Gordon Caron is working on getting them available on streaming services. Until then, here are 10 other shows to capture the chemistry and comic mystery if you like Moonlighting.

Pierce Brosnan got his big break on Remington Steele playing a pseudo James Bond like character. Stephanie Zimbalist played a private investigator who invented the fictional partner Remington Steele because clients wouldn’t take a female detective seriously.

An adaptation of Judy Blume’s 1975 young adult novel “Forever” has been greenlit by Netflix, the streamer announced Thursday.
The show is the first project to come from Mara Brock Akil’s 2020 overall deal with Netflix to develop new content for the streamer. Akil, best known as the creator of the popular 2000 Upn comedy series “Girlfriends,” will showrun and executive produce the series.
“Judy Blume’s ability to capture the real emotions we experience during the various rites of passage of our youth influenced my life choices and writing voice,” Akil said in a statement on Thursday. “I’m honored to reimagine one of my favorite books, ‘Forever.’ I am thrilled to have the opportunity of a lifetime to partner with a childhood icon and bring this story to my Netflix home, where the idea of your first love being with you Forever is shared with the world through the lens of Black love.

Pierce Brosnan seems to have had several notable false starts in his career. In what might be an infamous story, Brosnan was to play James Bond in the 1987 film "The Living Daylights" right after production was set to wrap on the fourth, and presumed final, season of his modestly successful TV series, "Remington Steele." The story goes that "Steele" was to be replaced by the Fred Dryer cop show "Hunter," freeing up Brosnan to step into the high-profile role of 007 and his co-star Stephanie Zimbalist to take the role of Anne Lewis in Paul Verhoeven's "RoboCop" (the part that would eventually taken by Nancy Allen). Ironically, Brosnan signing onto play James Bond saw a sudden new wave of interest in "Remington Steele," and NBC unexpectedly renewed the show for a fifth season. As Brosnan told the Irish Times:

Pierce Brosnan was James Bond before he was James Bond. As Remington Steele, the fictional creation of private investigator Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist) for five seasons during the 1980s on NBC, Brosnan nailed the part of a debonair rake who could handle himself in a scrape and look downright spiffy doing it. One look at the actor in a tuxedo was all you needed. He'd just entered his thirties, and was everything fifty-plus-year-old Roger Moore, who'd huffed-and-puffed his way through "A View to a Kill," was not. He was the 007 heir apparent.
It was time for a change, and after a successful screen test, the Bond producers offered Brosnan the part. The timing was perfect: "Remington Steele" had been canceled due to declining ratings, which seemingly thrust the Irish actor into free agency. NBC, however, kiboshed the deal by exercising a 60-day option in Brosnan's contract, forcing him into an...

Elvis is back in the building! Austin Butler is the latest actor to swivel his hips as the legendary Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s (“Moulin Rouge”) energetic new “Elvis,” which shakes up the biopic genre. Tom Hanks plays Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis’ mysterious Svengali-esque manager who made some startlingly bad choices for his client including turning down offers for him to appear in the original 1961 “West Side Story” and the Barbra Streisand 1976 remake of “A Star is Born.”
This new film has won the praise of his ex-wife Priscilla Presley, daughter Lisa Marie Presley and grandchildren including actress/director Riley Keough. Though Elvis died in 1977 at the age of 42, he’s been kept alive, at least in spirit-in numerous TV movies, miniseries, series and feature films.
One such movie was the long-forgotten 1993 NBC drama “Elvis & the Colonel: The Untold Story” starring Rob Youngblood as the young Elvis and Beau Bridges as Colonel Parker.

Who doesn’t love a great TV duo? The Book of Boba Fett, the spinoff of Disney+’s The Mandalorian, continues the partnership between stoic bounty hunter Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and mercenary Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) first seen in Season 2 of the flagship. “It’s like Remington Steele,” Morrison tells TV Insider, likening the characters’ bantering to the ’80s detective series starring a pre-James Bond Pierce Brosnan and Stephanie Zimbalist. Of course, this show being in the Star Wars universe, the chemistry won’t be exactly the same. “We go on a journey in itself and it’s an interesting one,” Morrison says. “I think it’s because of the fact that we were both almost buried in the sand and we could relate [to that], and I needed a confidante.” Morrison also reports tissues may be necessary for some scenes in the series — and got a tear in his eye talking about Boba’s journey.

Harry Hamlin claims that he was close to playing Indiana Jones, but lost the role to Harrison Ford because of an audition with Steven Spielberg that did not go as he expected.
In an interview with Page Six, Hamlin says that he met with Spielberg in 1978 alongside Stephanie Zimbalist, who was auditioning to play Indy’s companion, Marion Ravenwood. Spielberg told the two actors that George Lucas, executive producer on “Raiders,” was going to be late for the meeting and, strangely, asked them to make a chocolate cake while they waited for Lucas to arrive.
“He closed the door and left and we were standing alone in this kitchen,” Hamlin said. “I said, ‘Stephanie, have you ever made a chocolate cake?’ And she said, ‘No…'”

Right from the start it’s kind of obvious to see from her upbringing that Stephanie Zimbalist was brought up in a home where notoriety was just a common part of the landscape. Her grandparents were famed musicians and her father was an actor. Her aunt was even an author and historian, so it seemed as though following her family line in one of several roles that would grant her some exposure to the public was bound to happen. Having attended Juilliard after high school she eventually began her acting career, taking on the industry without much hesitation as she decided

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best will-they-won’t-they couple ever on TV? (Current and past shows are fair game.)
Eric Deggans (@deggans), NPR
This is tough. The will they or won’t they trope is so pervasive in television, picking a “best” is like looking for the shiniest grain of sand on a beach. The classic duos are obvious: Sam and Diane, David and Maddie, Carrie and Mr. Big, Ross and Rachel, Kermit and Miss Piggy. They’re the backbones of some of the best shows on television, but they’re also tremendously obvious and discussed to death. So my picks are going to be extremely personal and super specific.

So far in this column, the default setting for TV horror has been the supernatural; usually ghosts (vengeful division), and a cult or two (whether it be Satan or crops). However, I would be remiss if I didn’t tend to any unusual domestic activities on a more human scale. This brings us to The Babysitter (1980), Peter Medak’s chilling tale of live-in help with some serious boundary issues. She doesn’t do windows, but she will do away with you and your family.
Originally airing on Friday, November 28th, 1980 as part of the ABC Friday Night Movie, The Babysitter as well as NBC’s Friday Night at the Movies would get trounced by CBS’ top rated shows The Dukes of Hazzard and Dallas, but those were number two and one in the land, so nobody was breaking through that block, not even the nanny from Hell.

I interviewed Pierce Brosnan in conjunction with his third outing as James Bond, in Michael Apted's The World Is Not Enough, in 1999. Brosnan was alternately charming, erudite, thoughtful and intense during our two hour chat. His native intelligence shone through it all, as did a sense of decency which many people seem to acquire after enduring and surviving hardship in their formative years.

A serious actor, Connery desperately wanted to break out of the action hero mold that was British Superspy James Bond,...

Zimbalist had a recurring role in the 1950s hit TV series Maverick before starring with Roger Smith as private eyes in the smash hit 1958 series 77 Sunset Strip. However, it was in the 1960s that his star really rose by top-lining the TV show The F.B.I. The series was a love letter to the bureau and won praise from its controversial and mercurial director, J. Edgar Hoover, who gave unprecedented cooperation to the series. Zimablist went on to appear with his daughter Stephanie Zimbalist and Pierce Brosnan in another crime show, the 1980s hit Remington Steele. NBC is planning a sequel to the classic 1980s TV series "Remington Steele" which launched the career of Pierce Brosnan.
The original hourlong drama ran for five seasons and blended romantic comedy, drama, and detective procedural.
The story followed Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist) , a licensed private detective who opened her own agency but found potential clients refused to hire a woman.
She invents a fictitious male superior named Remington Steele and ends up hiring a former thief and con man to assume that identity, while behind the scenes she remains firmly in charge.
NBC's reboot keeps the title, but shifts things to a half-hour comedy format. The action in this follows Olivia Holt, the daughter of Laura and Remington, who reopens the once famed Remington Steele Detective Agency. She ends up in the same "hilarious, action-packed, romantic entanglements of her parents".

Following in the illustrious footsteps of recent TV reboots "Knight Rider" and "Charlie's Angels" (we kid), "Remington Steele" is on track for an update at NBC.
Deadline reports that the Peacock is planning a next-generation sequel series to its 1982-87 romantic comedy/drama procedural, notable for launching the career of Pierce Brosnan. Keeping the same title, the new series will follow Olivia Holt, the daughter of Remington Steele (Brosnan) and Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist), as she reopens the once-world-famous Remington Steele Detective Agency -- only to fall into the same "hilarious, action-packed, romantic entanglements" of her parents.
While the original series was an hour long, the proposed update, to be written by Jay Sherick and David Ronn ("Spin City"), will take on the half-hour comedy format. Ruben Fleischer ("Gangster Squad") is set to direct the project, which has a script commitment plus penalty.
Do you think an update of "Remington Steele" is a good idea?...

"Remington Steele" is back in business. The show will focus on Olivia Holt, daughter of Steele and Laura Holt (played by Pierce Brosnan and Stephanie Zimbalist in the original series), as she reopens the Remington Steele Detective Agency and subsequently becomes caught up in a series of "hilarious, action-packed, romantic entanglements" just like her parents. Lovers of ’80s primetime drama, Steele yourselves.
NBC is eyeing a sequel to its Reagan-era detective series Remington Steele — only the new project is a half-hour comedy, our sister site Deadline reports.
The undertaking, also named Remington Steele, would center on Olivia Holt, daughter of Remington Steele and Laura Holt (played by Pierce Brosnan and Stephanie Zimbalist in the original version).

In the comedy, Ms. Holt would reopen her parents’ detective agency and soon find herself in the same kind of funny, action-filled situations that provided the background for Remington and Laura’s five-season-long romance.

NBC is reviving the popular eighties dramedy Remington Steele as a half-hour comedy. The new show, also called Remington Steele, will center on the next generation of rom-com crime-fighting: Olivia Steele, daughter of Remington (Pierce Brosnan, back in the day) and Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist), decides to reopen her family's detective agency, "only to fall into the same hilarious, action-packed, romantic entanglements of her parents," according to Deadline. If you think the last thing we need is a will-they-won't-they detective couple, you are correct! But here we are, in a world full of mystery.

Exclusive: Three decades after Remington Steele launched the career of Pierce Brosnan, the romantic comedy/drama procedural is getting a next-generation reboot, this time as a half-hour comedy. NBC, which aired the original hourlong series for five seasons between 1982-1987, has nabbed the sequel project from 20th Century Fox TV, which owns rights to the show via News Corp’s acquisition of Remington Steele producer Mtm. Titled Remington Steele, the reboot follows Olivia Holt, the daughter of Remington Steele and Laura Holt, as she reopens the once-world-famous Remington Steele Detective Agency — only to fall into the same hilarious, action-packed, romantic entanglements of her parents. Jay Scherick and David Ronn are writing the script and Ruben Fleischer is set to direct the project, which has a script commitment plus penalty. The three are executive producing, with Fleischer’s executive Heather Petrigala as producer. In the original series, Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist), a licensed private detective,...

A new take on "Remington Steele" is on its way to NBC as a half-hour comedy series, Deadline reports. The new show will be a continuation of the world established in the 1980's version, following Olivia Holt, the daughter of Pierce Brosnan's Steele and Stephanie Zimbalist's Laura Holt. The original series followed the adventures of Laura, a young private detective who, believing her clients would rather hire a male investigator, created the fictional Remington Steele. In the pilot episode, Brosnan's character, a former thief, winds up taking on the identity, which he maintains for the duration of the series' five season run. If you were an enthusiastic horror film buff back in the ancient year of 1980, The Awakening might have seemed like a pretty cool option: - A cast that includes Charlton Heston, Susannah York, and a young, pretty Stephanie Zimbalist. - A young director by the name of Mike Newell -- who would go on to deliver features like Four Weddings and a Funeral, Donnie Brasco, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. - A screenplay by three veteran British scribes, based on a novel by Bram Stoker. - A nifty Egyptian setting and, best of all, a visual and thematic approach that feels like a combination of The Exorcist (1973) and The Omen (1976). - Bonus movie geek points if you were excited to...

Well we're back again with the bumper crop of must-have DVDs and Blu-rays for the month of May – from historic Italian epics to underground American sensations to a chilly, expressionistic film noir to movies where Raquel Welch plays a Vegas showgirl fleeing a murderer – we’ve got them all hear for you. So look on below to see what's worth your money this month....
"1900" (1976) Blu-ray
Why You Should Care: At the time of its release, Bernardo Bertolucci's historical epic was said to be the most expensive (requiring the financial commitment of three major studios – 20th Century Fox, Paramount, and United Artists) and ambitious ever mounted in Italy. It's a tale of two friends (played by Robert De Niro and Gerard Depardieu), born on the same day at the dawn of the 20th century, and the way that their lives crisscross, intersect, and diverge wildly over the rocky course of history.

Jim Wilhelm is glad he's not an actor anymore. A principal talent agent with the New York City–based Douglas, Gorman, Rothacker & Wilhelm Inc., he loved acting and fondly recalls performing in community theater as a young man. Indeed, Wilhelm is still a proud member of Actors' Equity Association, having earned his union card at Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera. But he never pursued a stage career because of debilitating audition anxiety. "Still, I wanted to work in the theater and be good at what I did," he says.To judge by his roster of clients, Wilhelm has scored. The actors he has repped include Hollywood legend Olivia de Havilland, Lainie Kazan, Stephanie Zimbalist, Sharon Gless, Lea Salonga, Alice Ripley, Elaine Paige, Harry Groener, Kathleen Chalfant, John Rubinstein, Douglas Sills, and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Choosing talent is always tricky, but Wilhelm is a strong believer in trusting his instincts, regardless of changing.

Being slightly on the vertically challenged side, we've never forgiven Randy Newman for "Short People." Sure, he has since written gems like "I Love L.A." and "You Got a Friend in Me," but it's all too little too late. "No reason to live," Randy? Really. Kind of harsh if you ask us.
But if you can get past his unkind words to the under 5'4" set, you may want to check out Randy Newman’s Harps and Angels at the Mark Taper Forum. The (perhaps) Broadway-bound show is not just another in a string of musicals that take a catalog of work by a single artist and build a story around it.
This show is simply a musical revue. Its sole purpose is to honor the music of the Toy Story composer. There is a bit of a through line based purely...

When we first learned that Stephanie Zimbalist was playing Katharine Hepburn in a one woman show, we were nervous. Not that we don't think that the former Remington Steele star is a talented actress in her own right. But, Hepburn is an icon... and one with the kind of very distinct, easily overdone speech affectation that can go terribly wrong when put in the wrong mouth. But we were pleasantly surprised by the show Tea at Five at the Falcon Theatre in Burbank-adjacent Toluca Lake, California.
As is always the case at the Garry Marshall owned playhouse, the production values were excellent. The set transported the audience to the Hepburn family beach house in 1937. A film flop addled Hepburn was waiting for the big call—would she get the career reviving part of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind?
We all know how that worked out.
