Sonic the Hedgehog is quite the asset for Paramount+.
The streamer debuted the six-episode limited series Knuckles on April 26, expanding the “Cinematic World of Sonic the Hedgehog” — and setting a streaming record in the process.
In its premiere weekend, Knuckles became the most-watched Paramount+ original series of all time with more than 4M hours streamed over that time frame. It’s also Paramount+’s most watched kids and family title ever.
Paramount+ rarely releases streaming data on its own accord, last touting the success of Lawmen: Bass Reeves. Just two episodes of that series amassed around 7.5M viewers globally in its first week on the platform. Of course, that also included a broadcast sampling run, which Knuckles did not receive.
The streamer is also using hours viewed to quantify the Knuckles audience, which makes it more difficult to compare to these previous numbers. Although, Knuckles appears poised to make an...

“Knuckles,” the live-action/animated spinoff series currently streaming on Paramount+ and featuring the titular red Echidna warrior (voiced by Idris Elba), kicks things off with an amusing ’90s throwback opening title sequence. We encounter markered animations (done by Picturemill) of the main characters, as they jump across the labels of mixed CDs in a binder and roll by the credits, to the tune of “The Warrior” by Scandal featuring Patty Smyth.
It’s all part of Knuckles getting introduced to the “earth music” of his new protégé, dim-witted deputy sheriff Wade Whipples (Adam Pally), while trying to teach him the ways of Echidna-style fighting.
This marks the first series for Knuckles, based on Sega’s popular Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise, which takes place between the events of the films “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” which introduced Elba. It was created by John Whittington (“Sonic the Hedgehog 2...

Taking place between the events of Sonic 2 and Sonic 3, Knuckles (Idris Elba) has a mammoth task on his hands while trying to settle into Earth’s ways. Deputy Sheriff Wade Whipple (Adam Pally) is being trained in the way of an Echidna warrior, but there’s a new villain on the scene — The Buyer (Rory McCann), a former lackey of Doctor Robotnik (Jim Carey) who seeks to obtain Knuckles’ power.
Perhaps there’s an argument to be made that all franchised movies should get a little TV teaser in between waiting for installments as a little treat for their patience. Knuckles is exactly that for fans of Sonic, effortlessly picking up where the events of Sonic 2 left off. It’s rare that a TV programme will begin by walking you through...

Fred Schepisi is set to direct Israel-based thriller “The Dimona Affair,” Variety has learned exclusively.
The project is based on the story of a whistleblower who claimed Israel was building a nuclear weapons program. (The country has always denied it has nuclear weapons).
After giving The Sunday Times of London a detailed interview about the program in the 1980s, causing an international scandal, “low level” Israeli nuclear technician Mordechai Vanunu fled the country. He was then reportedly lured to Rome by a female Israeli secret service agent in a honeytrap operation where he was kidnapped and repatriated to Israel. Vanunu eventually stood trial for espionage and treason before being convicted and jailed.
Schepisi, whose last feature project was “Words and Pictures” starring Clive Owen and Juliette Binochein 2013, is set to direct from a script penned by screenwriter and investigative journalist Morrie Rosmarin.

With the fandom that has popped up around the Sonic the Hedgehog films, both among younger audiences and adult fans of the games, it was only a matter of time before the IP became a franchise. Despite its A-list cast and high production values that should spell success as a spin-off, Knuckles loses track of the magic that made the films so beloved by fans, delivering a soulless, nearly insufferable comedy devoid of laughs or charm.
Set after the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the miniseries Knuckles follows the echidna warrior as he trains deputy Wade Whipple (Adam Pally) in his ways. It’s almost insulting how little Knuckles actually plays into this story, as his storyline is relegated mainly to a subplot about a shadow organization hunting him down for his power, with a focus more on Whipple’s journey of self-discovery that absolutely no one will care about.

Idris Elba is reacting to news that Keanu Reeves is joining the Sonic the Hedgehog universe as the voice of Shadow for the third installment of the film saga.
Elba voices Knuckles the Echidna and, during the red carpet premiere of the upcoming Paramount+ series Knuckles, shared his thoughts on Reeves.
“I’m a big fan of his,” Elba said in an interview with IGN. “I’ve heard that he’s a fan of mine, and we are destined to make something together. So, here we go.”
Elba and Reeves had shared credits voicing characters in Cyberpunk 2077 which would make Sonic the Hedgehog 3 a reunion for the actors.
Shadow made a non-speaking appearance during a mid-credits scene in 2022’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The character is an anthropomorphic red-striped black hedgehog created by the government and set to resemble Sonic’s abilities.

In a very unsettled drama Emmy field, one of the few ostensible locks this year is Elizabeth Debicki. With 4/1 odds, she is the runaway favorite to take home the Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmy for her turn as Princess Diana on “The Crown,” which would make the Netflix series the sixth show to deliver two different winners in the category.
Twelve shows have won drama supporting actress more than once. Of those, seven shows have had one person triumph repeatedly, including “Lou Grant” for Nancy Marchand, who won a record four times, and most recently “Ozark” for three-time champ Julia Garner. The five shows that saw the wealth spread among its cast members are “St. Elsewhere”, “The West Wing”, “Hill Street Blues”, “The Practice” and “thirtysomething”. No show has had more than two cast members win the award.
Interestingly, Marchand (1980-82; her first win was in ’78), Roberts (1983), Woodard (1984), Thomas (1985), Bartlett...

Will Smith may have fallen in love with Stockard Channing on the set of 1993’s Six Degrees of Separation, but Channing only felt “motherly” to the rising star, who was 23 and a newly married, first-time father at the time.
Channing — who earned an Oscar nomination playing a New York socialite who connects with a young con artist played by Smith in the film — opened up about working with the rising star in a new episode of The Hollywood Reporter‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast.
“He made a lot [of money] from his music, or even Fresh Prince [of Bel-Air],” Channing said. “Because I remember we talked about it.” Despite his massive success in music and TV at a young age, “there was no big shot stuff at all” about Smith, she said.
“He had a real survival instinct in him,” Channing added, “which was completely perfect for the part. [There was a] genuine charm and a lovely sweetness about him.

The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is off and running (pun intended). Not long ago, the official movie’s social media account released a short announcement trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in addition to the announcement that Jim Carrey, who had been circling around the decision to retire, will in fact return as the eggman himself, Dr. Robotnik. The third installment in the series teased the crossover of another character from the Sega game’s universe, Shadow, as the latest addition to the hedgehog family. You've seen these super-powered critters save the world a time or two, but what America and the world at large really want to know is ... what do they do on their day off? Apparently, for alien heroes with a taste for battle, that involves makeshift gladiatorial arenas and a never-ending quest for vengeance. That's courtesy of the popular breakout character from "Sonic the Hedgehog 2," which featured Idris Elba's dulcet tones as the voice of Knuckles. Now, ahead of this year's release of the third "Sonic" film, everybody's favorite red echidna is getting his own spin-off series titled, fittingly enough, "Knuckles."

You gotta go fast when you’re building a franchise, and Paramount Pictures has been moving like a speedy blue blur in racing out its live-action spinoff series of the “Sonic the Hedgehog” film, “Knuckles.”
“Knuckles” will bridge the gap between “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” and the upcoming third film, and this series gives a look into the adventures of the red, punch-happy Echidna warrior Knuckles, with Idris Elba reprising his voice role from the second film.
Ahead of a Super Bowl spot that will air during the CBS and Nickelodeon broadcasts (Knuckles and friends will even make an appearance during the kids’ version) of the big game, Paramount+ has dropped the first trailer for “Knuckles” and announced all episodes of the series will be available to stream in the U.S. and Canada beginning April 26. It will hit additional territories the following day and Japan later this year.

Soon it will be Paramount+ & Knuckles, as the streamer released the first trailer for its spinoff series of the “Sonic the Hedgehog” films on Thursday morning. “Knuckles” sees Idris Elba return to voice the eponymous grumpy echidna, introduced as Sonic’s foe-turned-friend in the second “Hedgehog” entry.
Billed as “the latest in the cinematic world of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog,'” the first look also comes with the news that the entire series — totaling six episodes — will debut simultaneously on Paramount+ in North America on April 26. Additional territories will follow on April 27, with a Japan release slated for later on this year.
Paramount Pictures and Sega of America plan to give fans an additional look at “Knuckles” during Super Bowl Lviii on Sunday, when a TV spot will debut during the game. The character of Knuckles is also set to make a “surprise appearance” during Nickelodeon’s specialized live broadcast of football’s biggest night.

“Men in Black” may be one of Will Smith’s most iconic roles, but he almost passed on the project.
“I kind of understood ‘Men in Black’ a little bit, but I didn’t want to make ‘Men in Black.’ That was the next year after ‘Independence Day,’ so I didn’t want to make two alien movies back-to-back,” Smith told Kevin Hart on the comedian’s Peacock talkshow, “Hart to Heart.”
It was Smith’s manager James Lassiter, also known as J.L., who first suggested the project to him. But it was “Men in Black’s” producer Steven Spielberg who got the yes.
Spielberg sent a helicopter to pick up Smith and take him to his house. “He flew me in, and he said the coldest s–t. He said ‘Tell me why you don’t want to make my movie,'” Smith said. “And he put the ellipses at the end.

After establishing herself as one of Hollywood’s hottest actresses in the mid-’90s with movies like Speed and While You Were Sleeping, Sandra Bullock teamed up with three other established actresses — Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing, and Dianne Wiest — for the movie Practical Magic. Though the film didn’t get great reviews at the time, and it fell short of breaking even at the box office, it has since established itself as a cult classic. Regardless of its performance, Bullock remembers the film as being incredibly fun to shoot, thanks to the rapport she shared with her co-stars. Even with the ongoing WGA strike grinding Hollywood to a halt, seemingly nothing can stop Paramount from moving forward with plans for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. According to the film industry-related website Production List, cameras will roll on the threequel in London on August 31, 2023.
While details about Sonic the Hedgehog 3 remain a mystery, the sequel will likely introduce more fan-favorite characters from the more-popular-than-you-would-ever-think franchise, including Shadow the Hedgehog, who Paramount teased during an after-credits scene for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. While Shadow is a known quality, Sonic fans hope the film series is planning to introduce more characters, including Amy Rose, Big the Cat, Rogue the Bat, Cream the Rabbit, Vector the Crocodile, and more. So far, there has yet to be a word if Jim Carrey will return to reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik.

New York based actor, producer, filmmaker and former Capetonian – Stelio Savante – has joined thousands of South Africans in celebrating the South African Supreme Court’s ruling on citizenship. The court summary declared that it was constitutionally invalid for South Africans to lose their citizenship when acquiring those from other nations. The ruling comes after the Democratic Alliance (Da) appealed a high court order that originally dismissed the party’s application that the legislation was inconsistent with the South African constitution. However this new ruling reinstated Sa citizenship for all those who lost it.

Savante – who has 135 international credits to his name – described the elation that he and other South Africans were experiencing – “I gratefully wake to celebrate with the tens of thousands of fellow South Africans who’d unnecessarily and inadvertently been deprived of their citizenship courtesy of a flawed and contradictory law that violated international human rights.

When Joesph Fiennes announced plans to play Michael Jackson in a pulled episode of Sky Arts‘ anthology series Urban Myths, the news left people aghast. While the series flew beneath the radar, information about Fiennes playing the Gloved One spread like wildfire across social media. Images of Fiennes as the King of Pop accompanied the announcement, with the actor looking like a melting wax figure in a black fedora while riding in a car with Marlon Brando (Brian Cox) and Elizabeth Taylor (Stockard Channing). The episode features the trio on a post-9/11 road trip, with a “lighthearted” tone. I’m unsure what to make of this information, and neither is Fiennes, who, while talking with The Observer, expressed regret about taking on the role.

It’s been well over six years since Joseph Fiennes appeared as Michael Jackson in a controversial never-to-be-aired episode of the British fantasy series Urban Myths, and he still has regrets.
In an interview with UK’s The Guardian yesterday, Fiennes said the 2016 Urban Myths episode was “a wrong decision.”
“Absolutely,” Fiennes said. “And I’m one part of that — there are producers, broadcasters, writers, directors, all involved in these decisions. But you know, it came at a time where there was a movement and a shift and that was good, and it was, you know, a bad call. A bad mistake.”
The actor added that people were “absolutely right to be upset.”

Joseph Fiennes wants to take back ever having played the King of Pop — even if the episode never saw the light of day.
In a new interview with The Observer, Fiennes expressed regret about the time he played Michael Jackson in a pulled episode of the Sky Arts’ anthology series “Urban Myths” in 2017. A trailer for the episode at the time stirred accusations of whitewashing, with backlash to white actor Fiennes playing the Black singer. The episode centered on a road trip after September 11 in which Fiennes’ Jackson is joined by Brian Cox as Marlon Brando and Stockard Channing as Elizabeth Taylor.
“I think people are absolutely right to be upset,” Fiennes told The Observer. “And it was a wrong decision. Absolutely. And I’m one part of that — there are producers, broadcasters, writers, directors, all involved in these decisions. But obviously if I’m upfront, I have become the voice for other people.

Joseph Fiennes expressed regret to The Observer over his decision to play Michael Jackson in a pulled 2017 episode of Sky Arts’ anthology series “Urban Myths.” The episode centered on Jackson taking a post-9/11 road trip with Marlon Brando (Brian Cox) and Elizabeth Taylor (Stockard Channing). Fiennes’ casting as the music icon generated whitewashing backlash, and the episode’s trailer ignited outrage over Fiennes’ lighter skin tone and prosthetic nose to play Jackson.
“I think people are absolutely right to be upset,” Fiennes said. “And it was a wrong decision. Absolutely. And I’m one part of that — there are producers, broadcasters, writers, directors, all involved in these decisions. But obviously if I’m upfront, I have become the voice for other people. I would love them to be around the table as well to talk about it. But you know, it came at a time where there was a movement...

Singing and dancing auditions over Zoom, shoots in the rain in Vancouver and filming during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic — none of that stopped the cast and creators from bringing “big Grease energy” to the set of the Paramount+ series, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies.
“Annabel [Oakes, showrunner] was the first to say, we should use Rizzo, we should use Stockard Channing as our North Star because she existed in that universe, it was big, but it was so grounded in truth,” says Conrad Woolfe, one half of the casting directing team behind Pink Ladies. “Rizzo was so grounded in something real.”
He, along with the creative team behind the new series, director and executive producer Alethea Jones, choreographer Jamal Sims, costume designer Samantha Hawkins and co-casting director Leigh Ann Smith gathered for a THR Presents panel, powered by Vision Media.

Aaron Sorkin‘s The West Wing is one of the most optimistic shows to air on television. From 1999 to 2006, President Josiah “Jed” Bartlet, played by the versatile veteran actor Martin Sheen, and his idealistic staff of deep thinkers presented the illusion that Capitol Hill was where the finest minds in America worked together to find the right answers, and got bonus points for the most self-righteous. The NBC series began the same year as HBO’s The Sopranos, and could be seen as its polar opposite, though the two shows had many similarities. Both were considered dramas, but had so many individual laugh lines they veered into comedy. Each featured a strong leader who faced crises, at home and abroad.
Starting with the very first episode, President Bartlet confronted beltway blowback, global dissension, and harsh life-threatening decisions. Some of these issues were personal, because a president’s private life affects the political process.

It was clear the days of the Big Four networks dominating the Emmys were slowly coming to an end 20 years ago; however, despite cable networks starting to gain momentum (with two receiving their first major wins), NBC and CBS still made a strong showing at the 55th Emmy Awards on September 21, 2003. HBO came into the night with a strong 53 major nominations, while NBC had 38 and CBS had 28; in the end, HBO and CBS tied with eight majors awards each and NBC trailed with six. Garry Shandling opened the event with a comedic monologue, while numerous presenters, including Ellen DeGeneres, George Lopez, Conan O’Brien, Martin Short and Wanda Sykes, carried the rest of the show without a host. Read on for our Emmys flashback 20 years ago to 2003.

For seven seasons, audiences tuned in to watch the fictional Bartlet Administration face the pressures of running the office of President of the United States of America in "The West Wing." Created by Aaron Sorkin, the series ran from 1999 to 2006 on NBC and followed President Jed Bartlet (Martin Sheen) and his dedicated staff as they overcame crises on a domestic and global scale while maintaining public support. Widely acclaimed across its entire run, "The West Wing" was nominated for a staggering 95 Primetime Emmys and ultimately won 26, including a nomination for its 2021 reunion special.
Praised for its frank tackling of real-world issues and its idealistic depiction of a liberal-oriented federal government functioning relatively free of cynicism, "The West Wing" is still one of the most highly influential political dramas on television. However, with creative shake-ups behind-the-scenes and several longstanding storylines that didn't quite click, not every season is as sterling as its superior counterparts.
