The chants and shouts of pro-Palestinian demonstrators disrupted the entry to the Washington Hilton for this year’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, but once inside, attendees were greeted with what has become the usual scene: Celebrities on the red carpet, a crush for the security line and glitterati packed into a cavernous ballroom.
“I want to thank my wife for enduring lots of jokes and for agreeing to individually meet everyone in this room right after the ceremony,” the evening’s featured entertainer, Colin Jost, quipped about Scarlett Johansson, who posed for photos with a non-stop stream of attendees. She continued to do so later in the evening, at the Comcast-nbcu after party at the French ambassador’s residence.

Robert Downey Jr. is one of the biggest movie stars of our generation. The actor recently won his first Oscar for his role in Christopher Nolan’s monumental 2023 historical drama Oppenheimer. But, despite his many impressive movie roles, Downey Jr. will forever be Iron Man for Marvel fans.
The 59-year-old actor also won fans over after candidly talking about his battle with drug addiction and how he overcame it. However, long before the Iron Man actor was on his road to redemption, he played the role of a drug addict in a forgotten 1987 thriller. Playing the said role catapulted him further into the dark depths of addiction.

Does the Television Critics Association’s semi-annual press tour still hold value?
That topic was a frequent debate at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena, California, where the TCA winter press tour wrapped Thursday after two weeks and a dizzying number of panels featuring stars, producers and the occasional executive.
TCA can still bring out the big stars (Apple had Michael Douglas, Hulu delivered Jon Bon Jovi, and Annette Bening and Snoop Dogg were highlights at NBCU) but the real value — aside from showcasing programming to a shrinking press corps that has been overwhelmed by Peak TV — comes from executive sessions that can help lay out a platform strategy that many will cover for months on end.
Before we get into the biggest takeaways from TCA, allow us to make an appeal to Netflix, Amazon, Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global to return to press tour. Yes, we know it’s...

Duckie may have had it out for Blane, but the feud extended behind the scenes as well, as Jon Cryer and Andrew McCarthy did not jive while making teen movie classic Pretty in Pink. Now, Cryer says that has all settled…but who gets to go home with Andie?

According to Andrew McCarthy, he could tell there was a difference in how he was treated once he was labelled as part of the iconic Brat Pack group of actors in the 1980s. The “St. Elmo’s Fire” and “Pretty in Pink” star broke down the change during a panel at the Television Critics Association’s 2024 winter tour.
McCarthy is currently behind “Brats,” ABC News Studios’ upcoming documentary about the group. The film follows McCarthy as he reunites with former members of the group and reflects on how David Blum’s 1985 New York magazine feature, which popularized the nickname, forever changed their careers.
“Ally [Sheedy] talks about this in the movie. She goes, ‘I remember going into rooms and I was suddenly perceived differently.’ Before it was like, ‘Here are the young guys,'” McCarthy said Saturday, mimicking the enthusiasm he used to experience from Hollywood producers and executives.

A 1985 New York Magazine article that first termed the phrase Brat Pack rocked the world of Andrew McCarthy and his co-stars of St. Elmo’s Fire — so much that each of the actors went years, even decades, without talking to each other. As McCarthy says, “actors want to be free of that baggage.”
Not anymore. McCarthy is now behind an ABC News documentary called Brats that addresses how that one phrase captured the zeitgeist and forever altered the careers of then 20-something actors like Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Mare Winningham and Molly Ringwald. Even then, it was not entirely clear who was a member of the Brat Pack.

Andrew McCarthy has written and directed Brats, and his documentary about The Brat Pack arrives later this year. More details within.
Tearing up the 1980s, both on and off cinema screens, was a bunch of young performers who earned themselves the collective name of The Brat Pack.
The group was made up of the likes of Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Bob Cryer and Andrew McCarthy, and they sprung to prominence particularly in 1985 and 1986. That’s when that group made up the cast for two hit movies, namely St Elmo’s Fire (pictured) and Pretty In Pink.
Other films followed, and the tabloid interest was intense, leading writer David Blum to give them the Brat Pack name. Andrew McCarthy reflected on all of this in a memoir he penned called Brats, released in 2021. Now, Deadline reports that the story is being turned by McCarthy into a documentary.

Lovers of 80s movies know the Brat Pack. The group of stars who graced the silver screen in films like Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and St. Elmos Fire were teen sensations and helped a generation grapple with coming-of-age issues in high school. Most have gone on to blossom into illustrious film careers, but they will always be remembered for their run in the 1980s film scene. While most also eventually bowed gracefully out of show business down the line, Andrew McCarthy was one member who had been out of the spotlight since the 90s.
Deadline is reporting that McCarthy will be rejoining his cohorts for the Hulu documentary titled Brats. McCarthy had written a memoir called Brat: An 80s story and has now written and directed the documentary that is currently in post-production. Photograph by Courtesy of Paramount Pictures With its Brat Pack cast and post-New Wave soundtrack, Pretty in Pink remains one of the quintessential teen movies of the 1980s. Even though he didn’t direct it, most people consider the film to be a John Hughes movie — after all, he did write the screenplay and was an executive producer. Because of that, he played a large part in the casting process, which worked out well for Andrew McCarthy, who landed one of the starring roles. Speaking on a Steel City Con panel, McCarthy told the story of how Hughes chose him for the movie based on the recommendation of Pretty in Pink’s female lead, Molly Ringwald. McCarthy, author of the 2021 memoir Brat: An ‘80s Story, writes and directs the documentary, which is now in post-production. He co-starred with fellow Brat Packers in some of the biggest hits of the mid- ‘80s including St. Elmo’s Fire (1985), Pretty in Pink (1986), and Less Than Zero (1987).

If there’s one character that Jon Cryer will forever be linked to, it’s Duckie from Pretty in Pink. The hopeless romantic who pines for Molly Ringwald’s Andie, he was the charming underdog that gave the audience someone to root for. And while he didn’t get the girl (although he did in the original ending), Duckie remains a key character not just in ‘80s teen movies but for Jon Cryer himself, saying he continues to be a role model.
Speaking with People, Jon Cryer said, “Duckie was very aspirational for me, because he was the guy I wish I was.” The actor, who was never part of the Brat Pack but danced around it (literally) through Pretty in Pink, added that he – and some classmates – shared many characteristics with Duckie. “I think that really is a universal experience for most people…I don’t think most people go through high school thinking,...

Jon Cryer is revealing which character from his past projects he wishes he was more like.
During an interview with People magazine, published online Thursday, the actor said he is still recognized for his role as Duckie in 1986’s Pretty in Pink, which he appreciates.
“Duckie was very aspirational for me, because he was the guy I wish I was,” the Extended Family actor said.
Being a self-proclaimed “theater dork” in high school, Cryer said he realized he was a “funny person,” but wished he had more confidence.
“I was actually decently good at this being on stage thing,’” he told the outlet. “But I never had the confidence I think that Duckie had, and I wish I did, because he really lived his life out loud in a way I could only aspire to.”

Pretty in Pink has all the earmarks of a John Hughes film: It takes place in the Chicago suburbs, it features many of the Brat Pack actors who were regulars in his movies, and it was propelled by a vibrant, modern soundtrack. But Hughes didn’t actually direct Pretty in Pink — Howard Deutch did. That doesn’t mean, though, that Hughes’s fingerprints weren’t all over it. Speaking at a Steel City Con panel, Andrew McCarthy said that Hughes maintained a constant presence on the set, even though he wasn’t directing. Isabel Coixet, the Spanish director of My Life Without Me, Things I Never Told You, The Bookshop and It Snows in Benidorm, will be honored by the European Film Academy with this year’s European Achievement in World Cinema award for her life’s work.
Coixet has carved out an impressive career in what could be called pan-Atlantic cinema, making mainly English-language features with international casts but with a strongly European sensibility. She followed up her promising 1989 debut Demasiado viejo para morir joven (which won the best new director prize at Spain’s Goya awards) with the U.S.-shot drama Things I Never Told You, starring Andrew McCarthy and Lili Taylor. The film premiered in Berlin, a favorite launching pad for Coixet, who returned the German festival in 2003 with My Life Without Me, a romantic drama starring Sarah Polley as a young mother diagnosed with terminal cancer who decides...

‘NCIS’ Creators Considered a Lot of A-list Actor to Play Gibbs — From Alec Baldwin to Patrick Swayze
Fans of NCIS eagerly await season 21 updates, as we can’t wait to find out when the beloved series returns. Unfortunately, we don’t anticipate Mark Harmon’s character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, appearing. Harmon played Gibbs for 19 seasons before calling it quits. And before Harmon got the job, NCIS creators considered A-list stars to play Gibbs.
‘NCIS’ creators considered A-listers to play Leroy Jethro Gibbs instead of Mark Harmon
Mark Harmon wasn’t always who NCIS creators wanted to play Leroy Jethro Gibbs. While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, it was revealed that other A-list stars were considered for the role.
Charles Floyd Johnson, executive producer for Jag and NCIS, spoke about the casting challenges production initially faced. “I know Harrison Ford was a name that everybody thought about for Gibbs because he was so perfect,” Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter. “But, I don’t think it ever got further than,...

When Mark Harmon decided to leave NCIS after nearly two decades of work as Leroy Jethro Gibbs, fans were certain it was the end of the series. Harmon had become the show in many ways, and fans couldn’t see a path through the departure of the show’s guiding light. It worked out, though. Harmon walked away to look for other projects and spend time with his family, and NCIS continued. It might be surprising to learn that Harmon was one of many actors considered for the part of Gibbs when NCIS was in development. The casting team even discussed casting Harrison Ford of Star Wars and Indiana Jones fame in the role. A meeting probably never took place about the part, though.

It’s always a blow when a fan-favorite actor leaves a beloved show. Loyal viewers are likely to speculate about the real reasons for a cast member’s departure. Add in reports of behind-the-scenes workplace drama, and the situation becomes even more intriguing. Take CBS’s mega-hit NCIS. The long-running show has seen several major stars exit over its 20-season run. But none has generated as many headlines as Abby Sciuto actor Pauley Perrette’s 2017 decision not to return to the procedural drama.

Although NCIS was well-liked from the get-go, not even an elite investigation could have foreseen the show becoming a hit that would span decades and launch a franchise.
It began in spring 2003 as a backdoor pilot for CBS’ sturdy military-law procedural Jag. Co-created by Jag mastermind Donald P. Bellisario (Magnum, P.I., Quantum Leap) and Don McGill (Numbers, CSI), NCIS follows special agents from D.C.’s Naval Criminal Investigative Service, led by Mark Harmon as Leroy Jethro Gibbs. The show’s initial core cast included Michael Weatherly (Tony Dinozzo), Sasha Alexander (Caitlin Todd), Pauley Perrette (Abby Sciuto) and David McCallum (Ducky Mallard). Twenty years later, the series continues to thrive, as it stands as CBS’ No. 1 broadcast drama for five straight seasons and has launched four spinoffs, with the first international entry, NCIS: Sydney, debuting this fall on the network.

When Mannequin was originally released in 1987, the critics were not kind. In fact, they were pretty savage in their near-unanimous hatred for the film. That didn’t stop it from being a modest box-office hit, though — and in the decades that followed, it managed to pick up new fans, some drawn to the film’s romance, some drawn to the film’s stars, and some who subscribe to the “so bad it’s good” school of cult cinema. At a fan event, McCarthy said he realized he wouldn’t be getting an Oscar nomination for Mannequin, but he wound up loving the experience nonetheless. Rob Lowe, 59, is reminiscing about his golden days.
Lowe posted a throwback photo of himself from the 80s with actress Demi Moore and late Wham’s singer George Michael. The nostalgic shot shows Lowe standing between Moore and Michael backstage at Michael’s Faith tour, which ran between 1988 and 1989.
“When you say: ’80s,’ I say…” wrote in the caption, welcoming others to finish the sentence.
One notable comment came from his son, John Owen, 28, who he shares with his wife of 32 years, Sheryl Berkoff. While John Owen is following in his father’s footsteps as an actor, Lowe’s and Berkoff’s eldest, Matthew Edward, 29, is a businessman.

In the 1980s, Andrew McCarthy attained stardom by virtue of being part of the Brat Pack, starring in films like Pretty in Pink and St. Elmo’s Fire with other Brat Packers like Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Demi Moore. Two years ago, he published a memoir called Brat: An ’80s Story, and he’s currently working on a documentary based on the book. “So great to see (for the first time in years and years) my St. Elmo’s Fire co-star, the wondrous Demi Moore, and catch up for my Brat Pack documentary,” McCarthy, 60, said in a post to his Instagram account on Sunday.

The documentary is based on McCarthy’s 2021 memoir “Brat, an 80s Story,” which focuses on his career in the 1980s and the peak of his fame as an actor. John Cameron Mitchell was originally cast in John Hughes’ “The Breakfast Club,” but that incarnation of the movie never happened due to lack of funding, the actor told TheWrap.
The actor, best known for his role in the 2001 cult classic “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” plays a sinister step-uncle to Jemima Kirke and Nico Tortorella’s characters in the new Apple TV+ series “City on Fire.” He had the occasion to revisit his brush with the Brat Pack when he and Molly Ringwald, who played rich girl Claire Standish in the ’80s high school classic, were both on the same flight.
“I was flying from New York and I was on the plane with Molly Ringwald, who was off to do ‘Riverdale,” he said. “So we we bonded a lot and talked about the old days. And I told her, actually, we had met once before. I said, ‘Molly, you know,...

Tom Cruise gave himself an impossible task: Smoothing things over with longtime pal Emilio Estevez.
According to Estevez in an Uproxx interview, Cruise regretted killing off his character in 1996 film “Mission: Impossible,” which kicked off an almost three-decade-long franchise. Cruise plays rogue CIA agent Ethan Hunt, with the original Brian de Palma film infamously having a bloody cold open killing off most of the A-lister cast.
“The way Tom had explained it, he said, ‘Look, I’d love for you to come and join the cast. The whole opening number where everybody gets wiped out, it’s going to be a lot of well-known people and all of them are going to go uncredited and it’s really going to set up the level of peril for Ethan,'” Estevez recalled. “And I said, ‘I’m in. You don’t have to ask me twice, I’m in.’ And then afterwards,...

People who came of age in the ’80s know exactly what the Brat Pack is — and can likely identify most, if not all, of its members. For the uninitiated, the Brat Pack was a group of young actors who found themselves in the ensemble casts of several of the decade’s most influential films aimed at younger viewers. Andrew McCarthy, a Brat Packer who starred in movies like Pretty in Pink and St. Elmo’s Fire, is currently making a documentary film based on his book, Brat: An ’80s Story. Speaking at a Steel City Con panel, McCarthy talked about what being part of the Brat Pack meant to him. Exclusive: Bret Easton Ellis’ The Shards, which is both a podcast and novel, is in the works at HBO as a drama series, Deadline has learned.
Ellis will write and EP with Nick Hall and Brian Young.
The Shards tracks a group of privileged Los Angeles high school friends as a serial killer strikes across the city, set in 1981. The podcast dropped last year on Ellis’ Patreon and Knopf published the book on Jan. 17.
Seventeen-year-old Bret is a senior at the exclusive Buckley prep school when a new student arrives with a mysterious past. Robert Mallory is bright, handsome, charismatic, and shielding a secret from Bret and his friends even as he becomes a part of their tightly knit circle.
