Who are we to disagree Danielle Harris? When looking for a Best Horror Movie You Never Saw, nothing in our completely mad up rules that say a movie can’t be well received at the time of release. It can win awards including one from the audiences that saw it at TIFF and the kind of go away. There are a ton of movies that are great and original films in a genre that is nearly as obsessed with sequels and movie universes as DC and Marvel are today. Stake Land (watch it Here) is an original piece of media that is one part Walking Dead, one part The Road, and all together one of the Best Horror Movies you Never Saw.
Stake Land was destined to be a movie that few had seen as its theatrical run produced about 33 thousand in theaters but in an era of physical media and streaming services,...

The first shots of Peter Weir’s Witness show an Amish community from over the tops of long grass, the camera’s point of view suggesting that of an inquisitive child. Even when the camera eventually moves closer to the Amish people at the center of the film, it maintains a certain emotional distance to them in order to convey their status as outsiders to the wider world all around them. That world immediately collides with their anachronistic existence in stark ways, with one farmer’s horse and buggy causing a traffic jam of cars behind him on a Pennsylvania road, and the idyllic countryside where the Amish reside gradually morphing into exurban sprawl of fast food chains and gas stations.
That culture clash becomes the bedrock for a thriller that kicks into motion when eight-year-old Samuel (Lukas Haas), the child of a recently widowed Amish woman, Rachel (Kelly McGillis...

"Top Gun: Maverick" is packed with nostalgia and callbacks to the original 1986 movie, including some legacy characters and familiar scenes. One thing viewers have noticed has changed, however, is who plays the love interest to Tom Cruise's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. The sequel - which was nominated for six Academy Awards - sees Maverick, now decades into his career, wooing a bar owner (and daughter of an admiral) named Penny Benjamin. Here's what to know about Maverick's love interest.
Is Penny Benjamin in the Original "Top Gun"?
Penny, played by Jennifer Connelly, is not physically in the first "Top Gun" movie, but she does exist in it, though only mentioned in passing. She is never actually seen on screen.
In one scene, Maverick's past exploits are said to include "a history of high-speed passes over five air-control towers and one admiral's daughter," and Maverick's Bff Goose mutters Penny's name under...

When Top Gun premiered in theaters in 1986, producers worried about one pivotal aspect of the film: the love story between the film’s leads, Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis. They believed the actors wouldn’t be believable on camera as love interests because, as one producer stated, she “looks like his mother.”
‘Top Gun’ producers worried Kelly McGillis and Tom Cruise wouldn’t look compatible on-camera
In an essay written for Medium titled “The Forgotten Star of Top Gun,” producer David Paul Kirkpatrick discussed his reservations about the pairing of Kelly McGillis and Tom Cruise. Several undeniable differences between the actors appeared too vast to ignore.
Kirkpatrick wrote McGillis “was much too tall for Tom Cruise. She was 5’11”. He was 5’7″.”
He continued, “Besides, she was 27, and he was 24, and the difference was palpable. After I saw them together for a ‘chemistry meeting’ on the Paramount lot, I walked away conclusively uttering,...

In cinematic trivia, some details linger in the collective imagination more than others. Among such details is Tom Cruise’s unexpected wardrobe choice in the iconic film Top Gun.
This topic has sparked numerous conversations over the years. Peeling back layers of this fascinating tidbit, we explore the what and why behind Cruise’s particular sartorial decision.

Cruise’s stature has garnered much attention over time, especially during the filming of the original Top Gun. The actor famously wore lifts in his shoes for the film, which raised a few questions.
According to Medium, it was necessary for Cruise to sport shoe lifts to counterbalance a noticeable height difference on set. Cruise’s co-star, Kelly McGillis, stands just shy of six feet, while Cruise is five feet seven inches tall.

August has been a significant month for Screambox, which celebrated the anniversary of Tobe Hooper’s original The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, took a look back at the classic 1985 movie Clue in Who Done It: The Clue Documentary, got creature feature crazy with the sci-fi horror Subject, and had a blast with the Ghostbusters-inspired sci-fi horror comedy The Ghastly Brothers.
In addition to the extremely controversial The Woman hitting the streaming service last week, Screambox has now added Ti West‘s supernatural classic The Innkeepers, courtesy of MPI and Dark Sky Films!
“While director Ti West’s brand of slow burn horror tends to be divisive, as slow burn horror is in general, The Innkeepers presents itself as a worthy selection for being based around and shot in an actual haunted hotel; the Yankee Pedlar Inn,” writes Meagan Navarro.
In the film, “The Yankee Pedlar Inn is in the process of closing.

Actor Harrison Ford was presented with an honorary Palme d’Or Thursday. As the most prestigious award at the Cannes Film Festival, it was given just minutes before the first public screening of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.”
Ford joins a list of honorary Palme recipients that includes Ingmar Bergman, Jane Fonda, Clint Eastwood, Agnes Varda, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Tom Cruise, the last of whom received his honorary Palme before the Cannes premiere of “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022.
“They say when you die, you see your life flash before your eyes. I just saw my life flash before my eyes,” Ford said during his acceptance speech in reaction to the sizzle reel of his cinematic career. “A great part of my life, not all of it.”

Harrison Ford will once again don the signature leather jacket and fedora of intrepid archaeologist Indiana Jones when Disney unveils Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny at Cannes in an out-of-competition slot this year.
Directed by James Mangold, the film marks the fifth time Ford has played Indy and comes 15 years after Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull also premiered at the festival. But Ford, who will receive a special tribute at this year’s fest, never expected Indy — nor his other signature character, Star Wars’ Han Solo — to have such longevity.
When the actor visited Cannes in 1985 on behalf of Peter Weir’s crime thriller Witness, in which he played a police detective called upon to protect an Amish woman (Kelly McGillis) and her son, it provided the opportunity to show he was interested in doing more than high-octane blockbusters. Yet when he sat down with British journalist Barry Norman,...

Tom Whitlock, who wrote the lyrics for the rock anthem “Danger Zone” and the chart-topping love song “Take My Breath Away” for the original Top Gun, winning an Oscar in the process, has died. He was 68.
Whitlock died Saturday at a memory care center in Gallatin, Tennessee, a spokesperson at the Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home in Springfield, Missouri, confirmed. He had Alzheimer’s disease, friends told the Springfield News Leader.
Whitlock wrote both Top Gun songs with Giorgio Moroder. Their relationship began when he fixed the brakes on the Italian composer’s Ferrari.
“Danger Zone,” performed by Kenny Loggins, was employed for the opening scene in the Tony Scott-directed, Tom Cruise-starring 1986 action movie, while “Take My Breath Away,” sung by Terri Nunn of Berlin, inspired the filmmakers to shoot additional scenes with Cruise and Kelly McGillis months later.

Nostalgia is a hell of a feeling, and if there's one thing we've learned over the years, it's that it sells. Just look at the wild success of "Stranger Things" or "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." You can go back even further to a TV show like "The Wonder Years" and, before that, "Happy Days." As if we needed any more evidence that people love feeling nostalgic, though, all you need to do is look at what a phenomenon "Top Gun: Maverick" became in 2022. It earned the top spot at the box office with a gross of nearly 1.5 billion, and beyond that, it was also critically lauded and even snagged a nomination for Best Picture at the 95th Academy Awards.
There's just something about seeing old characters and references that audiences love. It gives us comfort. But that's why it's a little surprising that the team behind "Top Gun: Maverick...

Welcome back, dear readers! It’s a new year, and it’s time for more new (to me) horror flicks. We’re kicking 2023 off with a flick from Ti West, a dude who had a hell of a 2022 with not one but two hit films in X and Pearl. But today we’re going to be taking a trip back into his earlier filmography, and our companion will be the great Emily von Seele. In addition to being a Senior Contributor right here at Daily Dead, you probably also know Emily as a regular co-host on the Dead Ringers podcast (I’m in the process of collecting all the Dead Ringers hosts as I’ve previously chatted with Nolan McBride and Philip Yount). Emily’s knowledge about horror films knows no bounds, and she brings an infectious enthusiasm to her discussion about the genre.

With the 2023 Oscar nominations announced today, "Top Gun: Maverick" is flying high with six nominations including Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Best Sound, Film Editing, Best Visual Effects and, finally, Best Original Song for the Lady Gaga's "Hold My Hand." Seeing how the long awaited sequel almost single-handedly brought the moviegoing public back to theaters after the pandemic, the recognition today for Best Picture didn't seem to surprise that many people. Not only is it one of the best sequels ever made, it's grossed almost 1.5 billion at the box office. That kind of mammoth success doesn't usually translate to Oscar gold, but Tom Cruise and company delivered a surprisingly emotional follow-up that doesn't just thrill the audience with aerial acrobatics. It actually has heart.
One nomination that is a little unexpected is Adapted Screenplay. At first glance, the script doesn't seem in concert with the dialogue-heavy screenplays that usually prick up the ears of voters.

Penny Benjamin, played by Jennifer Connelly, steps in to fill a difficult gap with her character in the much-anticipated “Top Gun” sequel.
Taking on the mantle of Maverick’s love interest after Kelly McGillis’ Charlie of the original film, Penny carries with her an emotionally mature presence that echoes that of her predecessor.
Penny brings a strong female character to the forefront of the story while showcasing the traditional vices of Maverick’s bachelor life. It remains to be seen if Penny will become another token girlfriend or a precursor to a relationship like no other seen before in Top Gun or elsewhere.

Harrison Ford is one of the most recognizable movie stars in the world, in no small part thanks to his iconic roles as Han Solo in "Star Wars" and globe-trotting archaeologist Indiana Jones. But with a career spanning nearly 60 years, Ford has brought plenty of memorable roles to the silver screen outside of the two Lucasfilm franchises, often to critical and commercial success. Sometimes his beloved roles in blockbuster franchises overshadow his extensive filmography. From tense political thrillers to character-driven dramatic pieces, Ford has displayed an enormous range of talent.
Yes, we love him as Han Solo and Indiana Jones. But we're here to highlight and celebrate 10 other characters Ford has brought to life. Some of these roles are popular and well-known, and others are criminally underappreciated. “Top Gun: Maverick” is, without a doubt, one of Hollywood’s biggest success stories. The long-awaited follow-up to the 1986 cult classic film “Top Gun,” “Maverick’s” domestic theatrical gross soared over 700 million; making it one of the top 5 highest-grossing North American films of all time, alongside “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Avatar.”
There are a lot of things about “Maverick” that make it worthy of such sweeping success: epic, adrenaline-pinching stunts performed by the franchise’s frontman Tom Cruise, whip-smart dialogue and heartwarming friendships and relationships that are impossible not to root for.
But one of the elements that audiences are most taken with in the new film is that it is a great throwback experience that provides the perfect dosage of nostalgia from “Top Gun.” With that in mind, we saw it high time we look back at the characters in the...

The 13th Annual Governors Awards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences on Saturday night came in with a vengeance. It was, perhaps, the biggest crowd of industry notables, Oscar contenders, and others I can ever remember at one of these events, where AMPAS hands out honorary Academy Awards.
It is a non-televised event, which means the recipients can go on as long as they like with their acceptance speeches, and so, for that matter, can the presenters. The good news is this particular foursome of honorary winners, Peter Weir, Euzhan Palcy, Diane Warren, and Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award recipient Michael J. In last year's documentary "Val," Val Kilmer talks about his Broadway debut in "The Slab Boys." He was originally cast in the lead role but got bumped down to second lead when Kevin Bacon was suddenly available. Then, when Sean Penn also became free, he was relegated to the third-best part. You can still hear the resentment, but then the proud professional takes over as he quotes the old adage: "There are no small parts, only small actors."
I always found a disconnect between Kilmer's sun-kissed good looks and his pouting aloofness. It was like he thought he was the smartest guy in the room and was waiting for everyone else to catch up. The documentary makes some of these contradictions more understandable: As a precocious talent, he was the youngest person ever accepted by the Juilliard School's prestigious Drama Division at the time, driven in pursuit of excellence by...

When Tom Cruise's Joel Goodsen danced across a wooden floor in his underwear as a teenage pimp in "Risky Business," he became an '80s heartthrob. Early in his career, Cruise could have remained as a teen-mag pinup type. Instead, he became a superstar badass known for films like the "Mission Impossible" franchise. Shortly after "Risky Business," Cruise played a young, ambitious football star in a nowhere town in "All the Right Moves." He then portrayed Jack, the heroic savior of damsels in distress in "Legend."
Ridley Scott's fantastical tale of good vs. evil was widely panned by critics. Over the years, it has become a cult-classic hit. Putting aside the possible cinematic shortcomings of "Legend," it surprisingly led to the emergence of one of America's most successful action stars and most beloved action films of all time.

For many decades, there’s been a massive disconnect between the movies considered summer blockbusters and those considered Oscar-worthy. There have been a few exceptions like Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” and Baz Luhrmann’s “Moulin Rouge!,” which both opened in May, and both of them making enough of an impact that many months later they were able to influence academy voters to give them love. Those movies came out over 20 years ago, though, and times and release patterns have changed, but maybe it’s time to revisit this idea.
Last weekend “Top Gun: Maverick” became Tom Cruise’s biggest blockbuster in the actor’s nearly 40-year career, setting a brand-new Memorial Day weekend record of 160 million, while also receiving stellar reviews and gushing audience reactions. The movie is a direct sequel to the 1986 “Top Gun,” which was a huge summer blockbuster in its own right – one of the biggest movies of that year,...

"Top Gun: Maverick" leans on nostalgia for the original '80s action fave, writing a new chapter of the high-flying story while also bringing back some of the stars of the original movie, like Tom Cruise in the title role and Val Kilmer's Iceman. There are definitely a few familiar faces who are missing, including Meg Ryan, who played Carole Bradshaw in the first "Top Gun." Since Carole and Goose's son Rooster is one of the main characters in the sequel, it seems a little odd that she's not in the movie, but the plot does offer a brief explanation.
What Is Carole Bradshaw's Role in "Top Gun: Maverick"?
While Carole isn't a part of the present-day story in "Top Gun: Maverick," she plays a very significant role in the backstory. One of the major conflicts throughout the movie is the tension between Maverick and Rooster, whose father Goose...

This Article Contains Spoilers For Top Gun: Maverick.
The original Top Gun came out almost exactly 36 years ago, turning Tom Cruise from a rising star into a legitimate superstar and implanting things like shirtless beach volleyball, callsigns, F-14 jets, and the Navy’s Fighter Weapons School into the public consciousness for decades to come.
The movie followed hotshot pilots Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) as they joined the school (known as Topgun), clashed with their commanding officers and fellow trainees (including Val Kilmer’s Tom “Iceman” Kazansky), and experienced tragedy, romance and some of the most dangerous yet exhilarating flying in the world.
Maverick arguably remains Tom Cruise’s most famous role, which is why it’s extraordinary in some ways that it’s taken more than three decades for a sequel to finally go into production. But Top Gun: Maverick is arriving on screens at last,...

Tom Cruise wanted to do barrel rolls. That’s one of the more singular moments Jennifer Connelly can remember about her time on Top Gun: Maverick, the long-awaited sequel to the 1986 classic. The opportunity to go flying with her legendary co-star had come about because Maverick features one of those classic movie moments. You know the type: a pair of old flames consider rekindling their romance as their single-engine aircraft drifts above the clouds and a lonely stretch of the Mojave Desert. Perhaps you’ve even seen something similar, with movie stars in front of green screens making eyes as they vanish into the wide blue yonder.
But in Top Gun: Maverick, they’re doing it for real as Cruise’s glorified biplane rises above the weather, and Connelly as his wingman in the backseat looks out in astonishment at the horizon.

I figured I should probably watch 1986’s Top Gun before my press screening of its impending sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. Often it’s the case with classic films — I use the phrase loosely here — I’ve not seen that I’m embarrassed to admit that. I can’t say that’s true here, but I am mystified as to how I’ve managed to avoid this movie for almost 40 years. I’m not sure how I missed it when it was new. I mean! Summer of ’86, when this was released, I was 17 years old, and I was going to the movies a lot. It was the season of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Manhattan Project, Aliens, The Fly, and Stand by Me. All was geeky GenX glory. Maybe there were just too many movies. Strange to think that could be it, when there are so many more vying for our attention now.

Despite the optics of shirtless volleyball games and locker room sparring, you can’t make a “Top Gun” movie without a strong and emotionally centered woman. For “Top Gun: Maverick,” a sequel 36 years in the making, the successor to the original film’s Kelly McGillis is Jennifer Connelly. She plays Penny Benjamin, a character referenced in the first film, and love interest to Tom Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Playing a single mom who owns an Air Force watering hole, Connelly brings new dimensions to an ’80s classic.
It’s hard to believe you haven’t worked with Tom Cruise before.

Who ever said the '80s were dead and gone for good? Over 35 years since 1986's "Top Gun" swept into theaters with all of its goofy, macho, thrill-seeking charm, we're finally returning to the Danger Zone with Joseph Kosinski's "Top Gun: Maverick." Reviews for the legacy sequel have just begun to fly in, with /Film's Ben Pearson praising the film for its crowd-pleasing and throwback approach to mining something new from the familiar. As he put it:
Like the sleek fighter jets in the film, this movie feels engineered from the ground up for maximum efficiency. But just because it can sometimes feel like you're riding a well-designed...

The world is not the same place it was in 1986, when “Top Gun” ruled the box office. In Ronald Reagan, America had a movie star for a president, and producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson as its honorary ministers of propaganda. The same year that “Platoon” challenged the United States’ militaristic track record, “Top Gun” sold a thrilling if narrow-minded fantasy of American exceptionalism — of boys and their toys, of no-homo bromance and what it means to be the best. Three years after Tom Cruise flipped the bird to a Russian MiG fighter plane, the Berlin Wall fell. Two years later, the Soviet Union collapsed.
One could argue that our new, post-Cold War world didn’t need a “Top Gun” sequel. (Tom Cruise himself once insisted as much.) But one would be wrong to do so. Building on the three-parts-steel-to-one-part-corn equation that director Tony Scott so effectively set 36 years earlier,...

Top Gun: Maverick is probably the best possible follow-up that fans of the late Tony Scott’s original 1986 movie—now very much considered a classic—could hope for. With star Tom Cruise returning to one of his signature roles, a well-placed original cast member, and a lineup of new faces, plus the narrative beats and action footage that the name Top Gun demands, director Joseph Kosinski’s legacy sequel checks off all the boxes.
More satisfyingly, however, the long-delayed movie is genuinely engaging and exciting enough to draw in others as well, including even those of us who don’t care for the original film. It plays exceptionally well as large-scale summer fare meant to be seen on the big screen (we recommend IMAX). At the same time, the things that people disliked about Top Gun—the one-dimensional characters, the maudlin melodrama, and the montages of military porn that play...

When “Top Gun: Maverick” finally opens in theaters later this month, fans of the 1986 classic will get to witness the long-awaited returns of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) and Tom “Iceman” Kazansky (Val Kilmer). But fans won’t see Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood, the Top Gun instructor played by Kelly McGillis. Maverick and Charlie’s romance (and the chemistry that sizzled between Cruise and McGillis) was one of the backbones of the original “Top Gun,” but McGills wasn’t asked to star in the sequel because her character was never even considered to return. “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski confirmed the omission to Insider ahead of the sequel’s release.
“Top Gun: Maverick” is set 30 years after the original and finds Maverick forced to train a new generation of hot shot pilots. The new recruits are played by the likes of Miles Teller, Glenn Powell, Monica Barbaro and Jay Ellis.

“Top Gun: Maverick” is already being hailed as the ultimate summer blockbuster of 2022, but the all-American sequel has a few glaring omissions: any of the female leads from the 1986 original.
“Those weren’t stories that we were throwing around,” director Joseph Kosinski told Insider. “I didn’t want every storyline to always be looking backwards. It was important to introduce some new characters.”
“Top Gun: Maverick” follows Tom Cruise’s iconic naval aviator Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who is now training a detachment of Topgun graduates, including late best friend Goose’s son Lt. Bradley Bradshaw, (Miles Teller) aka Rooster, for a dangerous mission. The sequel is set 30 years after the original and premieres at Cannes before soaring into theaters May 27.
And while new character Rooster is the emotional crux of “Maverick,” the storyline does inherently involve Goose’s wife, played by Meg Ryan, the mother (hen?) of Rooster. Yet Ryan,...

“Top Gun: Maverick” is set to screen at the Cannes Film Festival after a two-year delay because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The film will open domestically on May 27 after debuting internationally earlier that week. The official selections for the Cannes Film Festival, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary, will be released the third week of April. The festival runs from May 17 to May 28.
“Top Gun: Maverick” would mark the first time in 30 years that a film by Tom Cruise screened at the festival. The last Cruise film to premiere at Cannes was 1992’s “Far and Away.”
In addition to Cruise, the film stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro and Lewis Pullman. Joseph Kosinski, who directed Cruise in “Oblivion,” takes over for Tony Scott.
Scott’s original action movie, which starred Cruise, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards and Kelly McGillis, followed the exploits of a U.S. Navy flight academy and its students.

With “The Batman” upon us, Netflix is responding in due course with a wave of big-budget tentpoles hitting the platform this March. Picking just the seven of the best this month meant leaving off a few — Christopher Nolan’s time-bending World War II epic “Dunkirk” is an honorable mention, as is James McTeigue’s dystopian future vision “V for Vendetta.”
For those who prefer less explosive and CGI-driven spectacle, Jane Campion’s lyrical John Keats and Fanny Brawne romance “Bright Star” arrives on the platform March 31 — right on the heels of the filmmaker’s in-the-bag Best Director win for “The Power of the Dog” at the Oscars March 27.

Paramount surprised the CinemaCon crowd on Thursday with the first 13 minutes and the latest trailer to this fall’s “Top Gun: Maverick.”
The film opens with a sequence of fighter jets taking off in a beautiful hue of yellow and orange, shot to the classic “Top Gun” theme “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins, which fans will remember from the first film. The actor’s voice, perhaps more than any other tool in their kit—more than face and physicality—provides their critical means of expression. The surprisingly high-pitched voix aigue of Marlon Brando, for instance, or the rich low-ish register of Julia Roberts’ tone that can burst into shaking laughter. Bacall’s husky hum. Bogart’s lisp.
What, then, of an actor who can no longer speak, or at least in the voice we have come to know? Such is the fate of Val Kilmer, whose treatment for cancer now requires that he cap a throat tube each time he speaks. It has deprived him of the texture he could achieve in his speaking and singing voices, but not his soul of an artist.
The sense of Kilmer as very much the playful and searching spirit he has always been comes through in the new documentary Val, directed by Leo Scott and Ting Poo.
