Nicole Kidman enjoyed a memorable evening as an honoree at the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award Gala Tribute on April 27 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The actress, 56, also reunited with her Big Little Lies co-stars, Meryl Streep and Reese Witherspoon.
Five years after starring together in the critically acclaimed film drama by David E. Kelley, the trio was seen catching up at the gala event, where Kidman was presented with the Life Achievement Award. When Nicole Kidman was honored with the AFI Life Achievement Award, she spent a large portion of her speech thanking the directors whom she’s worked with throughout the years. The respect for the job, though, doesn’t she mean has any desire to step behind the camera herself.
“I feel like I would be a terrible director because I always have so many ideas. A director has to make choices, and that’s not my strong suit,” Kidman told The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday night on the AFI red carpet, noting that a producer’s duties much more align with her interests. “I’m very good at being passionate and supporting the voices and reading a script and going ‘I love this script,’ or seeing somebody and going, ‘I love this actor, I love this director, how do I support them?’ And they maybe have done nothing [before], but I want to get behind them.

“I think it was Andy Warhol who said, “Make art and let others decide whether it is good or bad. But while they are deciding, make some more”.
That was the line with which Nicole Kidman ended her 15-minute acceptance speech after Meryl Streep had presented her with the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award.
That is something that seems entirely appropriate for Kidman, who doesn’t seem to stop “making art,” taking risks at every turn, telling stories through her power not just as an actor, but also a producer dedicated to bringing those stories to screens big and small. At 56, she is on the younger side of the previous 48 recipients of this very high honor, the first Australian to receive it. Before you make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Comedy Supporting Actress, take a look through our photo gallery featuring the ladies most likely to land in the lineup. Since last year’s winner – Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”) – is now campaigning as a lead, this race is wide open to an array of possible newcomers, past contenders, and even a few former winners.
At this point, the clear frontrunner is potential category first-timer Meryl Streep (“Only Murders in the Building”), who previously achieved two Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress wins for “Holocaust” (1978) and “Angels in America” (2004). Hoping to challenge her are three of Edebiri’s “The Bear” cast mates: Liza Colon-Zayas, Abby Elliott, and Molly Gordon.
Of Edebiri’s six 2023 competitors, only two – “Abbott Elementary” pair Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph – are involved in the current race. Ralph took this prize for the same series in 2022, defeating Hannah Einbinder...

Anne Hathaway‘s performance in The Devil Wears Prada is one that we are still thinking about nearly twenty years later. However, you might be interested to learn that she wasn’t the first choice for the role!
In fact, while on RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2021, the actress said that she was the ninth choice to play the aspiring journalist who finds herself thrust into the fashion world alongside Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt.
This week Anne weighed in on the fan-favorite movie getting a sequel during an interview. It got us curious, and we did some digging to see who else could have starred in the movie. While we weren’t able to find all eight of the stars who were considered before Anne, We did round up seven.
The list even includes one star who turned an offer down three times and later admitted to feeling “guilty” about the decision!

Nicole Kidman is the rare actress in the 21st century who, like the stars of Hollywood’s golden years, doesn’t disappear into roles so much as elevate films by her mere presence.
She’s certainly swung big at mainstream blockbusters (think: the “Aquaman” films) that might feel out of her step with her character-driven work elsewhere (like most of the films on the list that follows). But that’s because the Australian icon is unafraid of any role, whether stripping down her post-Oscar, A-lister veneer to film Lars von Trier’s Brechtian “Dogville” in Sweden, slipping into a bathtub with the 10-year-old possible reincarnation of her dead husband in Jonathan Glazer’s “Birth,” or, yes, donning a fake nose to play a suicidal Virginia Woolf for her Oscar-winning turn in “The Hours.”

“Every season we’ve had some sort of theme or inspiration for Mabel’s costumes,” reveals Dana Covarrubias when referencing the character played by Selena Gomez on “Only Murders in the Building.” While the main players in the Hulu comedy mount a Broadway musical, eagle-eyed viewers might have noticed that Mabel’s outfits get a theatrical flair as well. The Emmy-nominated costume designer incorporated a nod to Broadway musicals into nearly every outfit that Mabel wears during Season 3. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“We thought it would be appropriate to use Broadway musicals and movie musicals as our inspiration,” continues Covarrubias. This doesn’t mean that Mabel is suddenly donning a Ziegfeld follies getup with sequins and feathers. She still retains her signature New Yorker style. “It’s just a nod to either the color of a costume or the silhouette,” explains the designer.

Back in 2006, Anne Hathaway’s The Devil Wears Prada, a dramedy about the harsh realities of working in the fashion world, became a massively popular hit, which is still rewatched and discussed by millions of fans. One of the most debatable issues regarding it is who is the real villain of the movie, as it’s not so simple to figure out as it may seem.
The most obvious answer lies right in the title of the movie, which implies Miranda Priestly, the main heroine’s boss, portrayed by Meryl Streep, to be quite a diabolic woman. Indeed, she’s egoistic, cruel to literally everyone she encounters on her way.
Nevertheless, there is a significant part of the fandom which justifies Miranda’s behavior, stating she is who she is because her position implies such a level of rigor and frivolity and recalling her ambition to make Andy reach her fullest potential.

That Time Meryl Streep Was Motivated By Money To Take A TV Role For The Sake Of The Love Of Her Life
Hollywood is not the place you think of first when it comes to stories of true love or long-lasting romantic relationships. But just like in her professional life, famed thespian Meryl Streep bucked the trend with her real-life relationship with the late actor John Cazale. The relationship even made the fastidious Streep break her own rule of doing a role purely for the sake of money.

Meryl Streep has been regarded as one of the most successful people of all time. Having broken records with how talented she is, normality has long escaped her life. However, many might not know that the actress faced one of the most human tragedies of them all; loss.
Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada
Before getting married to Don Gummer, Streep was famously involved with her Measure for Measure co-star, John Cazale, who was best known for his work on projects like The Deer Hunter and The Godfather. The two shared a very close and intimate connection that lasted until his passing from lung cancer. Many have found the actress to be very brave to have gone through such sorrow while simultaneously working.
However, it is when greatness is in the company of greatness that they are finally allowed to be people. Al Pacino is at the same level of fame as Streep.

Many have found the actress to be very brave to have gone through such sorrow while simultaneously working.
However, it is when greatness is in the company of greatness that they are finally allowed to be people. Al Pacino is at the same level of fame as Streep.

The film industry often comes across people who will never be forgotten for centuries to come. With their expert skills and undeniable charm, these people manage to make a mark on the industry that does not dull with time. The Godfather’s John Cazale was one such extraordinary actor who managed to deliver one great performance after the other.
John Cazale in The Godfather (1972)
Unfortunately, his time in Hollywood was limited as the actor passed away in 1978, just after being a part of six total films. Even though John Cazale doesn’t have an extensive filmography to his name, he holds a record that no actor has been or will be able to break. From his feature film debut in 1972 to his last film in 1978, all five of them have been cinematic masterpieces.

Okay, all you Meryl Streep superfans out there. You may think you know everything there is to know about the acclaimed three-time Academy Award winner. But can you name which of her Oscar-nominated roles she claims she was not “sexy enough” for until she “stuffed” her bra with paper towels for the director? Streep has been nominated a whopping 21 times throughout her career, an academy record, so we’ll help you narrow it down by giving you a few hints.
Hint #1: The film is based on a 1937 memoir.
Hint #2: Streep portrays the memoir’s author.
Hint #3: The movie won seven Oscars, including Best Picture.
Have you figured it out yet, or has the lion got your tongue? If you guessed “Out of Africa” (1985), you are correct!

“This is life’s ultimate cruelty. It offers us a taste of youth and vitality, and then it makes us witness our own decay.”
Is there anything more terrifying than the relentless passage of time? It’s a bitter truth that just when we’ve become accustomed to our bodies, the sands of time turn and we’re forced to watch them slowly break down in a cruel march towards inevitable death. But what if there were a way to stop the aging process – a potion that would return us to our peak physical condition and hold us there until the end of time? Would we take it? And would we eventually find that the blessing of perpetual life is actually a curse? No film explores this dilemma quite like Death Becomes Her. Carrie Robbins, whose more than 30 years as a Broadway costume designer saw her involvement in 1972’s Grease, for which she contributed the production’s signature poodle skirts, and the nuns’ habits of 1983’s Agnes of God, died following a brief illness with Covid on Friday, April 12, at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. She was 81.
Her death was announced by her friend Daniel Neiden.
Robbin’s Broadway career began somewhat inauspiciously with Leda and the Little Swan, a play that closed on Broadway before its scheduled opening at the Cort Theatre in 1968. Written by Amber Gascoigne and dealing with sex between generations of one family, Leda was called by William Goldman in his classic theater book The Season: A Candid Look at Broadway “the hardest show of the season to sit through.”

The recipient of numerous accolades including two Golden Globes and a Grammy, Sigourney Weaver is undoubtedly one of the best actresses in Hollywood. She is well-known for her diverse filmography which comprises films like Alien and Working Girl; while the former is a sci-fi horror, the latter is a romantic comedy-drama.
Sigourney Weaver in a still from Alien
Weaver rose to fame with her performance as Ellen Ripley in Ridley Scott’s 1979 smash hit Alien. She reprised her role in the three sequels after the first movie’s success. It is hard to picture any other actress as Ellen in her place. It might be surprising for some that a different award-winning actress was considered for the role once.

In a very unsettled drama Emmy field, one of the few ostensible locks this year is Elizabeth Debicki. With 4/1 odds, she is the runaway favorite to take home the Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmy for her turn as Princess Diana on “The Crown,” which would make the Netflix series the sixth show to deliver two different winners in the category.
Twelve shows have won drama supporting actress more than once. Of those, seven shows have had one person triumph repeatedly, including “Lou Grant” for Nancy Marchand, who won a record four times, and most recently “Ozark” for three-time champ Julia Garner. The five shows that saw the wealth spread among its cast members are “St. Elsewhere”, “The West Wing”, “Hill Street Blues”, “The Practice” and “thirtysomething”. No show has had more than two cast members win the award.
Interestingly, Marchand (1980-82; her first win was in ’78), Roberts (1983), Woodard (1984), Thomas (1985), Bartlett...

Ronan’s parents were both actors and she was born in The Bronx, New York while her father was studying acting there and working odd jobs. Her parents returned to their native Ireland when Saoirse was three, where she developed her signature accent. She began acting herself at the age of 9 on a few different Irish television programs. Christopher Durang, one of American’s most acclaimed and accomplished playwrights whose works like Beyond Therapy, Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You and the Tony-winning Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike were as incisive as they were absurdly comic, died Tuesday night at his home in Pipersville, Pa., in Bucks County. He was 75.
His agent, Patrick Herold, confirmed that Durang died as a result complications of his 2016 diagnosis with logopenic primary progressive aphasia (Ppa), a form of Alzheimer’s disease that impedes the ability to process language. He remained out of the public spotlight since his condition was made public in 2022. In February, New York’s Dramatists Guild announced that the playwright would receive its 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award on May 6, placing Durang on a prestigious roster alongside such past awardees as John Guare, Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Miller.
