We've already heard so much about Francis Ford Coppola's struggles to get his giant new film Megalopolis made — from financial wobbles, casting changes and, most recently, a screening for studios and streamers that generated little interest in the way of distribution deals. Yet with a French release in place and an upcoming premiere at the Cannes Film Festival designed to boost the buzz, Coppola has put the first clip from the film, featuring Adam Driver's character, online. Check it out:
Megalopolis is set in an alternate modern America, where the city of New Rome is at a pivot point in history. It has to adapt or crumble, but there is conflict between Cesar Catilina (Driver), who dreams of a utopian, idealistic future for the city and its incumbent mayor, Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who clings to the status quo, allowing greed, special interests and partisan warfare to dominate.

Ahead of the movie's world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 14, the first trailer for Francis Ford Coppola's sci-fi passion project, Megalopolis, has been released online.
Really more of a scene preview than a proper teaser, the footage sees Adam Driver's character, Caesar, step out on to the ledge of a building and walk precariously towards the edge. Caesar then begins to topple forward, but before he falls, he yells "time stop," and freezes in place. After a few moments, he snaps his fingers and the world around him returns to normal.
Coppola shared the clip on Instagram, with a sad addendum.
"Megalopolis has always been a film dedicated to my dear wife Eleanor. I really had hoped to celebrate her birthday together this May 4th. But sadly that was not to be, so let me share with everyone a gift on her behalf."

When asked by GQ about the potential repercussions of self-funding such a massive endeavor, the director responded, “I couldn’t care less about the financial impact whatsoever. It means nothing to me.”
“Megalopolis” sports an all-star cast, with Driver leading the pack alongside Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D.B. Coppola recently released a teaser for the film which sees Driver stop time with a watch as he stands atop a building overlooking New York.

Adam Driver is an architect who can control time in the first-look clip for Francis Ford Coppola’s upcoming, self-funded film, Megalopolis.
In the more-than-two-minute video, Driver’s Cesar Catilina makes his way onto the edge of a skyscraper, seemingly considering jumping. As he’s about to fully step off the building, he shouts “Time stop” and the cars below him pause at his command, and he leans back onto stable footing.
The film, which will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17, is a Roman Epic set in an imagined Modern America, according to its description.
“The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina, a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests and partisan warfare,” the logline reads. “Torn between...

A clip for one of the most anticipated films of Cannes has been unveiled this morning by writer/director Francis Ford Coppola. Opening with that famous American Zoetrope logo from the 1970s, the clip begins with Adam Driver’s character exiting a window at the top floor of a skyscraper and slowly inching towards the building’s sloped edge. As he bends to look down at the street below, then lifts a leg to step off, he loses his balance and yells, “Time stop!” The world freezes and Driver’s character is able to lean back and regain his footing before snapping time back into action. If one looks deep enough, a metaphor can be found for Coppola’s entire cinematic career within this simple two minute scene.

"Time stop!!" The French distributor Le Pacte has released the first look teaser for Megalopolis, unveiling the very first reveal of any actual footage from this intriguing new movie. Megalopolis is director Francis Ford Coppola's latest ambitious project, a $100M+ feature that he has been trying to make ever since he first conceived the film in 1979. The basic setup is: an architect wants to rebuild New York City as a utopia following a devastating disaster. It's not actually NYC, but a giant city like NYC hence the Megalopolis title. The architect's plan is opposed by the mayor, who has other ideas for the city. It's premiering at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in the Main Competition in a few weeks (we'll be there!), which is why France gets to kick off the marketing. The Megalopolis ensemble cast includes Adam Driver as Caesar, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf,...

We have already talked about Francis Ford Coppola’s major return to film, the epic project Megalopolis, which has been described as a visionary work, but is nevertheless having trouble finding a distributor. The movie is facing an uphill battle as we have reported, but it seems that Coppola has decided to do some of his own marketing to convince the studios to take his film. Not long ago, we provided you with a first-look image from the movie, showing stars Adam Driver and Nathalie Emmanuel, and just today, a first teaser video focusing – once again – on Driver has been released, confirming several interesting things.
Just a brief reminder before we continue. As we have written, the story of Megalopolis is an interesting one altogether. The movie was conceived way back in 1979, while Coppola was filming Apocalypse Now, one of the greatest war movies ever made. Now, 45 years later, the movie is finally complete,...

"You stand on the sideline too long, the game is gonna be over." Paramount Movies has revealed an official trailer for a psychological thriller titled Shadow Land, being dropped on VOD this summer. The latest from the same stuntman filmmaker behind Air Force One Down before. Haunted by relentless nightmares foretelling his untimely demise, Former President Robert Wainwright summons his past psychiatrist to his upstate residence who discovers the threat may be more real than imagined. With his trusted advisor, they embark on a mission to uncover the truth, navigating a dangerous path that could end up exposing a global crisis. This sounds like a completely crazy nonsensical script that is might be trying to comment on current events. But anyone with half a brain can see right through the Bs. Starring Jon Voight, Marton Csokas, Rhona Mitra, Philip Winchester, and Sean Maguire. It looks much more kooky than it does thrilling.

Francis Ford Coppola’s self-funded feature Megalopolis has revealed a first look image after landing a Cannes competition berth.
The project follows the rebuilding of a metropolis after it has fallen into decline, with two competing visions — one from the idealist architect Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), the other from corrupt Mayor Frank Cicero, played by Giancarlo Esposito — colliding.
The first official image from Megalopolis reveals Driver eyeing a rebuilding of the City of New Rome, while Nathalie Emmanuel, as Julia Cicero, the socialite daughter of Mayor Cicero, looks on. Megalopolis is structured as a Roman epic fable set in an imagined modern America.
To rebuild New Rome, Julia Cicero ultimately comes between a Cesar Catilina she falls in love with and Frank Cicero whom she remains loyal to as her father, as the two men battle with competing visions.

Though Megalopolis still doesn't have a distributor, the movie is expected to release before the end of the year, and we have a first official look at the sci-fi epic's main characters.
A lot of people were pleasantly surprised when Francis Ford Coppola's passion project came to fruition after the legendary filmmaker's previous failed attempts to get his vision off the ground, but the Godfather director announced that he had returned to the project back in 2019, and cameras started rolling in 2022.
Despite reports of some significant production issues, the movie wrapped late last year, and Vanity Fair has now shared the first official stills.
The images feature Star Wars actor Adam Driver as "an idealistic architect named Caesar, who hopes to rebuild the once great city, while Game of Thrones alum Emmanuel plays Julia Cicero, "the socialite daughter of a corrupt mayor (played by Giancarlo Esposito), and Driver’s character’s nemesis.

Francis Ford Coppola is a brand name and undoubtedly one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. And while he has provided us with a series of classic movies over his long career, he has been inactive for many years until he recently blessed us with Megalopolis, a movie that is just as ambitious as it sounds but may remain as one of the year’s biggest mysteries. We have already reported on the early reactions and struggles that the movie is facing going forward, and we are glad to confirm that Vanity Fair has blessed us with an exclusive first-look image from the movie, which shows the film’s two main actors, Adam Driver, and Nathalie Emmanuel.
If you’re not fully acquainted with it, Megalopolis is an interesting story altogether, as the movie was conceived way back in 1979, while Coppola was filming Apocalypse Now, one of the greatest war movies ever made.

‘Megalopolis’: After Wild Speculation, What Exactly Is So ‘Bats—’ About Francis Ford Coppola’s Opus?
Warning: Minor spoilers ahead for “Megalopolis”
Francis Ford Coppola has made quite the return to directing. Industry chatter about his new film “Megalopolis,” a passion project more than 20 years in the making, has been churning since a late March screening for prospective buyers.
This week, reports said Coppola was struggling to find a splashy distribution deal for his 135-minute epic, about a dystopia in the throes of an energy revolution. As a response — call it cosmic or intentional — Coppola rebounded by booking a spot in competition at the forthcoming Cannes Film Festival, where the movie is looking to reset the narrative. It’s not dissimilar to the skepticism that greeted another Coppola passion project, “Apocalypse Now,” which was derided by many as a vanity project before it screened at Cannes as a work in progress, going on to capture the Palme d’Or.

Francis Ford Coppola’s sci-fi passion project Megalopolis is to screen in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
Megalopolis, the long-in-the-making sci-fi opus from director Francis Ford Coppola, is still seeking a distributor, but it’s also set to make its debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
There have been reports for a while that Coppola’s latest movie would make an appearance at the festival, but now it’s been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter that Megalopolis will screen in competition on the 17th May – meaning it’s in contention for a coveted Palme d’Or prize. The previous winner was Justine Triet’s forensically precise drama, Anatomy Of A Fall.

Deadline reports that Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis will officially premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17th.
The project has been a long time coming, as Coppola began writing Megalopolis back in the 1980s but recognized that it would require a huge budget to match its massive scope, so it sat on a shelf for decades. In order to get the film made, he put his own money on the line, reportedly upwards of $120 million. The film also boasts quite a star-studded ensemble cast, which includes Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Chloe Fineman, Kathryn Hunter, Dustin Hoffman, Db Sweeney, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Bailey Ives, Grace Vanderwaal, and James Remar.

Francis Ford Coppola’s long-awaited “Megalopolis” will have its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, IndieWire has confirmed.
While the full festival lineup will be announced April 10, Deadline first reported that the epic has received the gala premiere slot at Cannes for a May 17 debut and that it will play in competition.
However, “Megalopolis” still has not secured distribution, IndieWire understands. Coppola’s attorney Barry Hirsch is working on selling the film, and he previously told IndieWire the film was unlikely to debut at a festival until it landed distribution.
The feature will be Coppola’s return to Cannes following his respective Palme d’Or wins for “The Conversation” and “Apocalypse Now.” His other Cannes film was “Tetro,” which screened in Directors Fortnight.

Exclusive: After a feverish courtship of Francis Coppola between the organizers of the Cannes, Venice and Toronto film festivals, Megalopolis has been locked into a gala premiere slot on the Palais on Friday evening May 17, I’m told. The film will premiere in competition at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
Cannes chief Thierry Fremaux wins the day on this one, on the eve of a full festival slate announcement Thursday. It comes shortly after a movie concept that had been eating at Coppola for 20 years was shown to buyers for the first time at the Universal CityWalk Imax Theater on March 28. Coppola’s longtime attorney Barry Hirsch is still in talks to secure a distribution partner for a film that will reach audiences in the fall, with an emphasis on Imax theaters.

Francis Ford Coppola has independently funded his $100m+ dream project Megalopolis – but there are few takers to distribute it.
The journey towards the screen for Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis has been an interesting one to observe, and that looks set to continue as the independently-funded project searches for a distributor.
Back in 2019, before cameras had even rolled on the production, there was talk that the reported $120m project was struggling to acquire financing and so Coppola, ever the filmmaking maverick (even at the grand age of 85), reportedly put in a hefty chunk of the money himself.
Then, during production there were reports of a chaotic set and ‘severe difficulties’ creating havoc for cast and crew. While these reports were duly denied, it all added to the legend that has continued to brew around the film, even if few have seen it yet.
Well, now people have seen it and what’s more,...

Francis Ford Coppola, the genius filmmaker who is credited for projects like The Godfather trilogy, Apocalypse Now, The Outsiders, etc has been hailed as a visionary director. With his ideas and storytelling, he weaves movies that have the capacity to enchant audiences. And he is now back with yet another project – a self-financed movie titled Megapolis.
Francis Ford Coppola and Marlon Brando on the sets of The Godfather
Starring a cast including Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Giancarlo Esposito, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, etc, the movie has been screened twice to distributors, but has been unable to find an interested party. The film is written and directed by the five-time Oscar winner, but with very polarizing reviews so far, the chances of the film finding distributors are getting slimmer by the day.

"This isn't your territory. It's their territory." Another international remake of a Hollywood classic! China has already remade the 1997 action-horror film about giant snakes called Anaconda, which was a huge hit when it debuted in the 90s. This new version is similar but follows a group of circus performers stranded in a rainforest. They must figure out how to survive when they discover they're marked as bait for the snakes. This Chinese remake stars Terence Yin, Nita Xia, Paul Che, Jiu Kong, Ken Lok, Wang Xing Chen, Wang Gang, Wang Zi Run, Xu Shao Hang, and Wu Hao. The original movie ended up with a few bad direct-to-video sequels (including Lake Placid vs. Anaconda in 2015) and Hollywood has also been trying to reboot it with screenwriter Evan Daugherty hired to write a new script. Until then, this Chinese version might be just as ridiculously entertaining as the original, which infamously...

After 13 years, legendary Oscar-winner Francis Ford Coppola is seemingly back with a new movie, Megalopolis, which is slated to be released in late 2024, although that could still be pushed back. After a controversial outing with 2011’s Twixt, Coppola has finished his new movie, a sci-fi epic with an ensemble cast, which has been screened for distributors in the United States. As of the time of writing, not much is known about the movie, but Deadline reports that the film’s runtime is 2 hours and 13 minutes, and that is without the credits, but as Mark Fleming Jr. writes, the runtime seems “remarkably brief,” which indicates that Coppola has indeed made a great movie.
Megalopolis is an interesting story altogether, as the movie was conceived way back in 1979, while Coppola was filming Apocalypse Now, one of the greatest war movies ever made. Now, 45 years later, the movie is finally complete, as the...

Francis Ford Coppola is shrugging off retirement rumors ahead of the release of his sprawling self-financed film “Megalopolis.”
Coppola had been developing the original story for “Megalopolis” for close to 30 years, with Deadline reporting that the auteur lost 75 pounds to increase his stamina to complete the script. The 84-year-old filmmaker told the outlet that despite “Megalopolis” being a “big, difficult” movie, it is in no way his swan song.
In fact, his next upcoming project is finally what led Coppola to consider “Megalopolis” as complete.
“One way I knew ‘Megalopolis’ was finished is that I’ve begun work on a new film,” Coppola said. “It won’t be cheap by any means, but I don’t know it can be called ‘an epic film.'”

Three and a half years ago, Sony’s Columbia Pictures announced that they were developing a reboot / reimagining of the 1997 “nature run amok” thriller Anaconda (watch it Here), with the intention of “taking what was a simple and relatively cheap programmer with a B-movie concept and event-izing it in scope and budget.” Tom Gormican is on board to write (and possibly direct) the film as his follow-up to the well-received action comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and we’ve heard that this new take on the concept of Anaconda might be taking a meta approach, with “actors playing loose fictional versions of themselves who go off to make an Anaconda movie and all hell breaks loose.” There was a rumor that Pedro Pascal and Paul Rudd had been offered roles in the film… But while we wait to see how that project is going to pan out, Sony Pictures...

After spawning three sequels and a spinoff crossover film with the Lake Placid franchise, Anaconda is plotting a return here in America, with a new movie reportedly in development.
Additionally, we’ve now learned, the ’90s classic Anaconda is getting a Chinese remake!
From directors Xiang Qui Liang and Xiang He Sheng, the upcoming Anaconda remake has unleashed a wild official trailer this week, and it’s loaded with giant snake carnage.
In the 1997 movie, a film crew is taken hostage by an insane hunter, who forces them along on his quest to capture the world’s largest – and deadliest – snake. The Chinese remake looks to feature a mostly similar storyline, centered on a massive killer known as Scarlet Naga. It also seems to feature zombies from the Qing Dynasty, which definitely weren’t in the 1990s movie.

There probably aren’t too many movie fans that aren’t looking forward to Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, his passion project that is decades in the making. And while we have gotten a lot of news in terms of plot, casting, title design, and more, it still feels sort of surreal that Megalopolis will finally be released later this year. But if we want any further details about what to expect, one of its stars, Adam Driver, can only tease.
Driver, who plays a character named Caesar in Megalopolis, described the film as such: “It’s kind of undefinable, which feels very general until you watch the movie. Then my answer will be perfect. There’s not a lot of precedent for it and it’s wild on a big scale, which is what’s really unique about it.” That’s not a whole lot but that Driver suggests...

The results are in on the 2024 Razzie Awards, and it was a very big (but not necessarily great) night for one movie and one actress this year.
The annual awards show, which took place one day before the 2024 Oscars on Saturday (March 9), hands out awards to performers and movies that have been deemed the “worst.”
Going into the ceremony, Expend4bles led the pack of nominees with 7 nods in categories such as Worst Picture and Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off of Sequel.
However, when it came time for the awards to be handed out, another movie swept the field, picking up five Razzies. One actress also won big, being named Worst Actress and Worst Supporting Actress.
However, one Hollywood icon received redemption this year!

Slasher film Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey swept the five categories it was nominated in for at the 44th annual Razzies, which “honor” the worst of filmmaking. The awards were announced today.
‘Winnie the Pooh’ won the Razzie in the picture, director, screenplay, screen couple and remake/rip-off/sequel categories. The film, based on the beloved children’s literary character, follows Pooh and Piglet, who have become feral and bloodthirsty murderers. They terrorize a group of young university women and the returning Christopher Robin.
The Razzie Redeemer Award, bestowed on a past contender who has “gone on to better things” since being nominated for a Razzie, went to “The Nanny” actor and SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher for her leadership during the 2023 actor strike.
Drescher was nominated in 1998 for worst actress in the romantic comedy film The Beautician and the Beast.

Awards season tends to give movie fans all of the glitz and glamor that we love about Hollywood…That is, until it doesn’t. A torture-porn slasher film created solely to capitalize on its characters falling into the public domain, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey took home five Razzies Friday: Worst Picture, Worst Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel, Worst Screen Couple (Pooh and Piglet), and Worst Director and Worst Screenplay to the filmmaker Rhys Frake-Waterfield.

When you look at the cast of Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, it’s pretty amazing how many up-and-coming young actors were involved, most of whom were complete unknowns at that point. Over forty years after its release, Coppola has shared audition footage of The Outsiders on Instagram, featuring Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillion, Ralph Macchio, and more. There’s even footage of actors who didn’t get roles in the movie, including a young Anthony Michael Hall.

It was interesting because each of them was watching their competition, so while it could’ve been a volatile situation,...

Although there’s no distributor yet confirmed for Francis Ford Coppola’s decades-in-development, nearly completed epic Megalopolis, we’re starting to get a sense of when we may see the $100 million epic. The director himself recently indicated it’ll be out in a few months, but according to a new report, a fall release is more likely.
In a round-up of Cannes possibilities, Deadline notes the movie is targeting “a big fall IMAX release,” which means a Venice or North American festival (i.e. TIFF or NYFF) could be more likely than a visit to the Croisette. The article also notes it’s unlikely that Steve McQueen’s Blitz, Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths, David Lowery’s Mother Mary, Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, and Luca Guadagnino’s Queer will be stopping by Cannes, but George Miller’s Furiosa, Audrey Diwan’s Emmanuelle, Andrea Arnold’s Bird, and David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds,...
