Mike Hodges, director of films like "Get Carter," "Croupier," and "Flash Gordon," has died in Dorset, England, at the age of 90, according to Variety. The site reports that Hodges' passing was announced by his friend Mike Kaplan, who worked on his film "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" as a producer. Hodges was known for crime dramas, with his last feature film released in 2003. He worked with Michael Caine in both "Get Carter," a British gangster drama, and 1972's "Pulp," about a pulp fiction author tasked with ghost-writing a celebrity's memoir, then solving that celebrity's murder.
Crime was a draw for Hodges, who said in an interview with Mulholland Books for his 2010 debut novel "Watching the Wheels Come Off," "Crime is the litmus that shows what's really going on below the surface. That's why I'm attracted to it. Besides, as one myself, sinners interest me more than saints." Writers also figured into another film from Hodges,...

If you are a movie geek, just knowing that a movie is produced by Dino De Laurentiis is a sign that the movie is usually worth your attention. Flash Gordon though is also a film that doesn’t just need that association, it instead stands on its own; and while it may not be Star Wars, it definitely has a place in the hearts of science fiction fans.

Flash Gordon still stands alone in the pantheon of comic book movies 40 years on. Colorful, vibrant, kinky, and often absurd, Mike Hodges’ gaudy tale of an all-American boy defeating a powerful villain from space and saving the Earth in the process had until recently felt far removed from the predominantly safe and CG-heavy comic book fare of the last few decades, despite its familiar themes and due in large part to its distinct refusal to take itself seriously. But the film we know and love is a world away from how it began.
Back in the 1970s, wealthy businessman and film producer Dino De Laurentiis held on to the Flash Gordon rights after George Lucas’ attempts to extricate them. A much-less-minted Lucas was forced to make his own space adventure movie instead, a little project called Star Wars. Its success indisputable, De Laurentiis was more determined than ever to make...

With echoes of The Wizard of Oz and Carry On movies, Mike Hodges’ vintage intergalactic fable delivers mayhem, madness and eye-frazzling colour
‘This place is a lunatic asylum!” says the square-jawed, peroxide-blond hero of Mike Hodges’ bizarre LSD pantomime Flash Gordon, adapted by Lorenzo Semple Jr and Michael Allin from the 1930s comic-strip serial – now rereleased on streaming platforms for its 40th anniversary. It now looks even madder and more expressionist than ever, with an operatic theme from Queen, bizarre 2D studio sets for alien planets and the kind of eyeball-frazzling colour scheme that generally only existed on old TVs of the era before you had to thump them.
Sam J Jones plays the Earthling American football star Flash Gordon who finds himself caught up in an intergalactic war when the evil Ming the Merciless launches an attack on Planet Earth. Swept along for this titanic battle is comely Dale Arden...

The Flash had a quite literal “Yass Queen!’ moment in its Season 6 premiere, when Cisco cued up the theme from 1980’s Flash Gordon to score Barry’s fleeting trip into the cosmos.
Flash Gordon, of course, starred Sam J. Jones (in the title role), Melody Anderson, Topol and Max von Sydow (as Emperor Ming the Merciless) in a gloriously cheesy space opera — or, as Flash showrunner Eric Wallace regards it, “The masterpiece from my childhood.”

The man who can do no wrong. Taika Waititi, has been commissioned to figure out a way to bring together an animated ‘Flash Gordon’ for Disney’s newly acquired 20th Century Fox.
The long in development property seems to have taken a new route as an animation under Disney’s ownership but at the moment, in what capacity Waititi could be taking this project forward is yet to be determined.

[To get you into the spooky spirit, the Daily Dead team is spotlighting double features that we think would be fun to watch this Halloween season. Keep an eye on Daily Dead for more double feature recommendations, and check here for our previous Halloween 2017 coverage.]
It’s always been my dream to own a movie theater and program just my favorite genre fare. Of course, showing nothing but the oeuvre of William Girdler would leave me destitute within a month (okay, a week), so naturally I’d have to expand my programming. I’ve always found that double features are a great tool (and if anyone knows what it’s like to be a great tool, it’s me) for finding the connective tissue between films that may appear to be dissimilar upon a quick pass, or to highlight and illuminate similarities that create an entirely new experience.
First up in my double feature entitled "Why Am I Always The Last To Know?" is Herk Harvey’s Carnival of Souls (1962), a Twilight Zone-ish tale of a young woman who finds herself in a state of disconnect following a car accident, constantly followed by ghoulish visions at every turn.

Looking back now – three decades later – it’s hard to believe that the idea of an archaeologist as The go-to film hero was, oftentimes, a guarantee to bring in the punters and create a big-money blockbuster movie! Indiana Jones, Romancing the Stone, King Solomon’s Mines, etc. all graced the big screen to varying degrees of success during the mid-80s; and yes, it was Spielberg’s film that reignited the genre but it took Cannon Films – the purveyors of low-budget, high-concept big screen bonanzas – to really put the fun into this now-buried treasure of a genre.
After hitting it big with King Solomon’s Mines, they milked the classic character for another big-budget (at least for Cannon) movie before the flash-in-the-pan adventurer genre faded.

Flash Gordon screens midnights this weekend (September 18th and 19th) at The Tivoli Theater as part of their Reel Late at The Tivoli midnight series.
Flash Gordon (1980) is a sci-fi family blockbuster directed by the fellow who gave us the gritty ’70s gangster movie Get Carter. Its two leads (Sam Jones, Melody Anderson) can’t act at all and are barely engaging. The performances are completely uneven to the extent that actors seem to think they’re in different films. After Star Wars and Alien had set a benchmark for sci-fi being a bit dark and grimy it’s like they threw all that out and decided that sci-fi should look polished, shiny and colorful. Ted 2 hits theaters on Friday, but that doesn.t mean they.re done having fun in the pre-release media campaign yet. There.s a new poster for the upcoming comedy which will strike a chord with anybody who was a sci-fi fan in the 1980.s, especially if you.ve seen the first film. The poster via the Ted Facebook page, is a reproduction of the original 1980 Flash Gordon movie poster. Ted looks just as evil as Max von Sydow.s Ming the Merciless. Mark Wahlberg takes on the role of a slightly confused looking Flash Gordon, as played by Sam J. Jones, and Amanda Seyfried is in place as Melody Anderson.s character, Dale Arden. Sam J. Jones had a cameo as himself in the first Ted film as the talking bear and his best friend are big fans of the movie and jump at the chance to meet...

1981 was an amazing year for horror. An American Werewolf in London. The Beyond. The Evil Dead. The Funhouse. The Howling. The list goes on and on. However, one that always seems to fall through the cracks of time and memory is Dead & Buried.
Released in May 1981, Dead & Buried did not set any box office records. This is due to the fact that it is very hard to categorize. Is it a slasher ala Friday the 13th Part 2? No, but there are some gruesome and realistic deaths courtesy of late effects whiz Stan Winston. Is it a monster movie like The Howling? Not exactly, but the movie involves transformations (of a sort). Is there a mystery to solve? Definitely, and this is what drives the story forward and through the disparate elements at play.
60’s and 70’s TV survivor James Farentino stars as Dan Gillis, Sheriff of the seaside town of Potter’s Bluff.

Chuck Norris and Lou Gossett Jr buddy up as bounty hunters in search of Aztec treasure in a rowdy comedy adventure. Okay, so it's got "Indiana Jones knock-off" running through it like a stick of rock and the flawlessly-coiffed Melody Anderson (her out of Flash Gordon) is just a pretty face, but the leads give it all they've got in the action stakes, as you'd expect from the true pros they are.

"Science Fiction Double Feature" from The Rocky Horror Picture Show references lots of movies. We unpack it all...
I have watched, well, not exactly watched, but experienced The Rocky Horror Picture Show over 100 times. I’ve only watched it about 30 times. I saw it in the movies and on HBO about five times before I couldn’t take it anymore and troweled makeup on, ripped up some fishnet stockings and took to a stage myself. Figured I was a natch, had the same hair as Tim Curry and did his voice in a passable mimic, not that I'd need it.
I performed in a Friday night cast 72 times from when I was 15 to when I was 17. I started as Dr. Frank N. Furter and when I was replaced by a woman in lingerie, as opposed to a guy in drag, I played Janet for a while. The...

Arguably the best part of the movie Ted was all the Flash Gordon stuff. In case you haven't seen Flash, here's a refresher course. Sony Pictures Animation has scored the movie rights to NBC's short-lived early 80's TV series "Manimal" with plans to turn it into a combination live-action/CG animated feature says Heat Vision.
Simon MacCorkindale ("Death on the Nile") starred in the campy original as Dr. Jonathan Chase, a wealthy doctor with a mysterious past, who can shape shift into any animal he chooses in order to help the police fight crime.
Melody Anderson ("Flash Gordon") and Michael D. Roberts ("Baretta") co-starred. Only eight episodes aired before the critically slammed show was cancelled, though it has since developed a cult following.
Glen A. Larson ("Magnum P.I.," "Knight Rider," "Battlestar Galactica") created the original show and will serve as producer on the film for which writers are currently being sought. The move follows Sony's announcement last month of a similar live-action/CG feature based on 80's sitcom "Alf".

Remember the NBC early 80s show called "Manimal?" No? Well, don't worry, the premise is pretty simple. It's about Dr. Jonathan Chase, a rich doctor who morphs into animals in order to fight crime! Yup it was a campy show, and NBC cancelled it after just eight episodes. The series, starring Simon McCorkindale and Melody Anderson was created by Glen A. Larson, the TV producer who gave us "Magnum P.I., " "Knight Rider," and "Battlestar Galactica" among others.
Now, according to THR, Sony Pictures Animation has picked up the movie rights to "Manimal" and is developing a live action/CG Hybrid film. Sony is fast becoming the studio who gives you the live action/CG Hybrid films that you really don't care about but you'll watch anyway. Movies like "The Smurfs" last summer which grossed a head-scratching $500-million box-office take, the unavoidable sequel, and the upcoming "Alf."

Pop culture can be a funny thing. I don’t mean “Ha ha” funny, although that is also sometimes true. I mean funny as in a head-shaking “Ain’t that a bitch,” kind of way.
For example, yesterday I went to see Ted. I didn’t want to, but it was the Number One box office hit this weekend and my son, the genius, is doing a blog on the subject, and he was in town for the Del Close Marathon. It’s not a very good movie, in my opinion, but I’m not a huge fan of Seth McFarlane. He’s okay, and I will always support him because his work points out the blistering hypocrisy of our shared alma mater . And I like fart jokes more than the average little old Jewish lady.
Still, I found myself tearing up. Did the film have unexpected emotional depth? No.

Potters Bluff is a quaint seaside town in Rhode Island that’s “the size of a postage stamp” according to its Sheriff, Dan Gillis (James Farentino). He has a beautiful wife, Janet (Melody Anderson), and the respect of the townspeople. It’s the kind of place where everyone is happy to see you, and they hope you’ll stick around for a long, long, time.
However, Sheriff Gillis has a problem no civil servant wants to have: His small town has been the site of several mysterious tourist murders. With the help of the local coroner, Mr. Dobbs (Jack Albertson), the poor Sheriff is in a no-win situation as bodies keep showing up.
Written by Dan O’ Bannon (Alien) and Ronald Shusett, Dead & Buried is the kind of really weird, and chokingly atmospheric horror movie they just don’t make anymore. Everything is shrouded in fog, day and night. And everyone acts a little strangely,...

Dead and Buried (Original Release Date: 29 May 1981)
Either I've seen all of Dead and Buried and only remembered the ending, or I somehow only caught the ending and never saw the rest of the movie. I think it's the former. It felt familiar to me from the beginning, but I told myself as it went along that it must have borrowed this or that element from another movie. By the time I got to the end, I knew I had seen it. It's a doozy of an ending, with a last shot right out of the Twilight Zone playbook.
This isn't to say elements aren't borrowed. I'm sure it owes a debt to Stepford Wives, Invaders from Mars, and Wicker Man, and it probably owes something to White Zombie and Lovecraft's "Herbert West--Reanimator." Dan O'Bannon, who worked on the script, adapted two of Lovecraft's works--"The Lurking Fear" and The Case of Charles Dexter Ward...

On December 5, 1980, a motion picture arrived in theaters that redefined nothing.
Its makers had been hoping that the movie would be a titanic success, in the same leagues as Star Wars. It was not.
Its cast, having signed on to star in two more sequels, were hoping that this picture would place their names on the A-list of Hollywood actors. It did not.
But in the years that followed, there is one thing that Flash Gordon became: a cult movie, one that I deeply enjoy even though I shouldn't. I can't help myself: Flash Gordon is great. It's a movie that shouldn't have been made the way that it was, and probably the kind of film that couldn't get made today even if it were planned out.
To realize how a goofy but perfect Flash Gordon got made, you have to appreciate the era in a show business context. It was the late 1970s.

Avatar star Sam Worthington is not going to play Flash Gordon. In late 2009, a super mysterious insider said that Worthington was being considered for the role of Flash in a Hollywood reboot, a long-rumored project that is mostly regarded as pure bullplop.
Worthington agrees: The Aussie actor set the record straight. “There is no validity to the rumors,” he said via email to AICN. “Sometimes studios tend to just scat ideas and they leak out – but its the first I have heard about it.”
In 1980’s Flash Gordon, heroic All-American Flash saves the world from the nefarious Ming the Merciless in this lavish, intentionally campy adaptation of the famous sci-fi comic strip. The story is as basic as space operas get: Ming (Max von Sydow) has developed a plan to destroy the Earth, and Flash (Sam J. Jones) and his attractive companion, Dale Arden (Melody Anderson), are called upon to stop him.

Avatar star Sam Worthington is not going to play Flash Gordon, nor Flesh Gordon for that matter. In late 2009, a super mysterious insider said that Worthington was being considered for the role of Flash in a Hollywood reboot, a long-rumored project that has about as much stock in reality as Dr. Dre’s Detox album.

Ha. “Scat.”
A new Flash Gordon wasn’t the only bullplop for Worthington, who also starred in Terminator Salvation. He was rumored to play the lead in Mad Max 4: Fury Road. The role was eventually won by Tom Hardy.

I am sorry, but if Columbia Pictures makes a new version of Flash Gordon and it is anything like the original I just can't get excited about it. I know that is saying something blasphemous in a lot of circles, but I just did not enjoy that film. I thought it was cheesy and stupid. It seemed like more of an outlet to sell music by Queen than to actually make a cool movie. So, when I hear Sony is pecking away at bringing a new version to the screen I really don't get a jolt in anyway as much as I get a cringe. Considering Flash Gordon isn't exactly the hip hero he was back in the '80s they obviously can't go the same route, but you never know. One thing I will say is that I would be able to respect a new version that at least...
