Believe it or not, even the most beloved movies can face initial skepticism from actors. Field of Dreams, a 1989 classic, became more than just a sports movie. It delved into deeper themes like redemption, family, and the importance of pursuing dreams. Despite its universal appeal, Ray Liotta, who played the memorable character “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, wasn’t immediately sold on the story.

At first, the idea of ghosts playing baseball in a cornfield seemed a bit too far-fetched for him. However, he changed his mind and decided to be part of it, thanks to the great friendships he formed with the cast, especially Kevin Costner.

Richard Gere and Edward Norton headline the 1996 thriller Primal Fear, which is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK.
Cast your mind back to 1996, assuming you were alive at that time, and not a toddler. This was a time when movie studios – Paramount in particular – were seeking mid-budget thrillers, which had a habit of delivering a very pleasant profit.
In the case of 1996’s Primal Fear, headlined by Richard Gere, the film also unearthed a brand new talent. That’d be Edward Norton, in his first high profile Hollywood role. For taking on the support in what could have been a disposable potboiler, he ended up scoring his first Oscar nomination for the role, and deservedly so.
There’s a lot else to like in the film, too. Gregory Hoblit was directing a bunch of mid-priced films at the time, and we’ve chatted about them and his work,...

Actors Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Guest’s romance spans over four decades, beginning with Curtis revealing that it was love at first sight.
“I met my husband by seeing his picture in a magazine and saying out loud to a friend of mine, ‘I’m going to marry that dude,’ and married him … months later,” Curtis shared on Today in 2021. “So the truth of the matter is life hinged for me on a couple seconds that I didn’t see coming.”
Curtis ended up meeting Guest through a chance meeting in 1984. Initially, a friend gave Curtis Guest’s agent’s phone number. She called him but he never returned her call. But it was Kismet when she bumped into him at a restaurant.
When Jamie Lee Curtis met Christopher Guest …
Curtis recalled that initial meeting with Guest. “He was sitting about 10 feet away and he looked at me and kind of nodded.

Kevin Costner has starred in several films about baseball, and they're all remarkably different. Both "Bull Durham" and "For Love of the Game" combine romance with America's National Pastime, yet the former is a funny, flirtatious romp that parallels the mechanics of the sport with the rituals of human courtship. The latter, on the other hand, is an elegiac melodrama about the things we prioritize in life and just how hard it is to bid farewell to the life you used to have upon reaching a crossroads.
Phil Alden Robinson's classic "Field of Dreams" exists somewhere at the nexus of those two films, merging a baseball fable with a poignant story about regret but with a fantasy twist. The film, which adapts W. P. Kinsella's 1982 book "Shoeless Joe," casts Costner as Ray Kinsella, an everyman who, like other Boomers, was once a child of '60s counter-culturalism. He's...

This article contains light spoilers for Better Call Saul season 6.
One of the most artistic scenes in either Better Call Saul or its parent show, Breaking Bad, is the cold open to the sixth season premiere episode. The audience is taken through Saul Goodman’s house in a first person point of view camera angle. A variety of items belonging to Saul throughout his adult life that have been previously seen in the two shows reappear here. From shoes Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) wore when walking at the mall with old ladies during a scheme, to his exotic tie collection, the scene indicates that Saul’s entire life is being escorted out of his house by movers.
The most important item that the camera focuses on is a bottle topper that falls out of a dresser drawer as it’s being lifted onto the moving van. This isn’t any ordinary cap,...

Al Pacino created an urban legend with Tony Montana, and Brian De Palma’s Scarface (1983) is an icon of the gangster film genre; one of an unholy trinity alongside The Godfather (1972) and Goodfellas (1990). But when it premiered in New York, Steven Bauer, who played Manny Ribera in the film, remembers Martin Scorsese turning around halfway through the movie to warn: “You guys are great, but be prepared, because they’re going to hate it in Hollywood. Because it’s about them.”
The same could be said about the original Scarface. Studio filmmakers saw producer Howard Hughes as a rich interloper, bullying his way onto the lot with too many guns blazing. Conversely, Brian De Palma’s Scarface is about excess, and how success depends on it. Oliver Stone’s screenplay for the ‘80s movie used a gangster as an allegory for the Reagan administration’s war on drugs and the capitalistic greed of the era.

Director Kevin Reynolds’ graphic, gritty desert combat movie is about a lost tank in the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan. Besides being 98 an unpleasant downer, it now reminds us that we got into the exact same fix just a decade after the Russkis threw in the towel. Cruel Russki soldiers commit atrocities against vengeful Moujahedin resistance, and there’s really nobody to root for. George Dzundza, Jason Patric, Steven Bauer and Stephen Baldwin endure a rough ordeal out in the dirt, hoping for the next war movie breakthrough hit.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched the eighth episode of “Better Call Saul” Season 6, titled “Point and Shoot.”
After shooting Howard (Patrick Fabian) in the head and holding Saul (Bob Odenkirk) and Kim (Rhea Seehorn) hostage in their own home, Tony Dalton’s terrifying-yet-suave villain Lalo Salamanca has finally died, and at the hands of Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito), no less. And in a twisted cherry on top of “Better Call Saul’s” suspenseful Season 6 Part 2 return, it’s revealed that Lalo is buried beneath Gus’ meth super-lab.
Lalo came so close to exposing Gus to the rest of the Salamanca cartel. Very calmly and thoroughly, he explained his plan for Saul to drive to Gus’ house, ring his doorbell and shoot him — all while Lalo is standing over Howard’s dead body. However, Saul convinced him to send Kim instead, saying that she’d be...

"I feel like everybody knew him except me." HBO has unveiled an official trailer for an indie film titled My Dead Dad, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Fabio Frey. It's co-written and produced by Pedro Correa, who also stars in it as the main character. It premiered at the 2021 Woodstock Film Festival last year, and screened at numerous other fests including Austin, Mill Valley, and Filmocracy Fest where it won the Audience Award. A burnout discovers his estranged father has died, leaving him the responsibility of managing an apartment complex. With hopes of cutting ties, he's forced to grow up, learning about the dad he never knew through the eclectic tenants. Starring Pedro Correa with Raymond Cruz, Courtney Dietz, Simon Rex, Booboo Stewart, Steven Bauer, Chris Pontius, Nicholas Duvernay, and Nate Jackson. This would probably be a bit better if it had more humor in it, as this trailer seems so depressing.

Raymond Cavaleri, a former child actor who became a talent agent and founded Cavaleri & Associates in 1981, died July 19 in West Hills, CA. He was 74.
His son Damian Cavaleri announced his death to Deadline, noting that he died peacefully surrounded by family.
Born in Syracuse, NY, Cavaleri was 6 months old when he and his parents moved to California. As a child actor, he got roles on such 1960s TV series as Boris Karloff’s Thriller, Dennis the Menace, Going My Way, Combat and a memorable 1962 episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents titled “The Children of Alda Nuova” in which actor Jack Carson played an American gangster hiding out in Rome who is menaced by a group of teenagers.
Cavaleri had several small roles in the 1970s, including in the TV series Bracken’s World and the 1975 Tony Curtis crime drama film Lepke, but by the early 1980s he’d become a talent agent.

“All I have in this world is my balls and my word, and I don’t break them for no one,” Tony Montana declares in the 1983 gangster classic, Scarface. Yet Al Pacino’s antihero breaks both in his quest for money, power, and women. And just as he is on the brink of winning the trifecta, he is blown away like so much dust up a nose.
Did he lose because the Cuban mobster didn’t heed the advice of his first crime boss? Or is it because he just couldn’t stand to see his sister and his best friend wearing his-and-her pajamas? In truth, Montana’s fall can probably be traced back to when he learned to speak English by “watching guys like Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney.”
Directed by Brian De Palma, and written by Oliver Stone, Scarface is a remake of Howard Hawks’ vastly influential 1932 mob movie,...

“Men always seem to end up on top,” goes “Women Is Losers,” the Janis Joplin song that lends writer-director Lissette Feliciano’s 1960s-set feature debut its title. It’s a fitting line to ponder in the context of her over-enthusiastic yet frustratingly clumsy feminist film, which declares “inspired by real women” in its first frame before going on to illustrate their struggles against the era’s routine sexism.
It’s obvious that those unnamed and undoubtedly courageous real women mean a great deal to Feliciano, who utilizes her picture’s protagonist — a young, hardworking San Franciscan battling against the period’s patriarchal indignities — as a mouthpiece to give them a retroactive voice, and perhaps even to interrogate how far women’s rights today still have to go in a world where men continue to end up on top. But while these are commendably well-intentioned ambitions, “Women Is Losers” sadly squanders...

Lissette Feliciano’s feature debut is just as scrappy as her leading lady. When “Women Is Losers” kicks off — so named for the Janis Joplin song of the same name — a righteously pissed off Celina (the wonderful Lorenza Izzo) is all but dragging her cheating husband Mateo (Bryan Craig) out of another woman’s apartment by his hair, but she’s still got the time to turn to the camera and apologize for any perceived lack of production value. This is, after all, “a story about making do with what you’ve got,” and both Feliciano and Celina make a lot out of their talents and passions.
Though not every one of the first-time filmmaker’s big leaps pan out — her ’60s- and ’70s-era production values really are quite high for an indie production, though some of her more out of the box musical selections would be odd anywhere — Set...

Brian De Palma’s 1983 saga of hoodlum Tony Montana is an exceptional remake that’s become a classic almost by default — it’s too strikingly original to ignore. De Palma did the Latin male stereotype no favors, while bringing attention to the outrageous drug trafficking aided by law enforcement and criminal banks in a shameful decade of excess. Al Pacino added a page to his catalog of great performances, and the careers of Michelle Pfeiffer and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio were duly launched. De Palma gives this one ‘classical’ direction: he skips his former film school cinema games and homages to Hitch the Master.

James “Whitey” Bulger, the notorious Boston crime boss who was serving a life sentence in prison and who also served as an informant with the FBI, died on Tuesday at the age of 89. His story though has inspired a handful of gangster characters across film and TV, including one direct adaptation of his life story.
“The Departed” (2006)
Jack Nicholson’s role as mob boss Frank Costello in Martin Scorsese’s Boston gangster drama “The Departed” is very loosely based on Whitey Bulger, though Scorsese’s film is actually a remake of the Hong Kong film “Infernal Affairs” from 2002.

At 61, Melanie Griffith has no qualms about being asked to audition for roles. "I’m totally open to it," she says, though she does find the process funny at times. "People go, 'Wow, you’re really good!' And I say, 'Well, yeah, I worked forever. I know what I’m doing, so… thank you?' People forget very easily in this business." Melanie, who earned an Oscar nod for her turn in 1988’s Working Girl, is more than ready to remind everyone of her talents. Melanie Griffith isn't interested in getting married again, but she also doesn't wish her three ex-husbands any ill will. The 61-year-old actress recently opened up about marriage - and divorce - in a candid interview for the September 2018 issue of InStyle. "All of my husbands, my three husbands - I love them all so much, and we're all very close," she said.
Melanie famously married Don Johnson for six months when she was 18, and the couple later remarried a decade later following her split from Steven Bauer. Despite the ups and downs of their relationship, Melanie said it was meant to be for one special reason: her daughter Dakota Johnson. "It was sort of a natural karmic thing for us to get back together and to have Dakota," Melanie said. "She was meant to come into the world, if you think about it."

Fifth time's a charm? Probably not in Melanie Griffith's case. The famed actress has been married four times to three different men, but after four divorces, the 61-year-old doesn't think another marriage is in the cards for her. "I really don't think it's relevant for anyone anymore. But especially if you're 60 and you have four kids and you're living the life you've always wanted. Then why get married?" the Working Girl star shared with InStyle in a new interview. "It's, like, I would love to fall in love and have a romance, a relationship, but I haven't. I keep looking. I've had a couple of lovers but not a relationship." (Photo Credit: Getty Images) Melanie wed Don Johnson in 1976 and they weren't married long before their divorce just months later. She then tied the knot with Steven Bauer in 1981 and they were married until 1989 — the same year she remarried Don.

"Scarface" star Steven Bauer fears a civil war in America triggered by intolerance, and he seems to be pointing a finger at a prominent member of Congress. We got Bauer Tuesday in Bev Hills at Ocean Prime, and he's grousing about politicians who are sewing the seeds of violence.
