Intro: It’s a story we’ve all heard before. A group of friends stray off the beaten path and end up having to fight for their lives. This has served as the set-up for many classic horror films and thrillers. Back in the early ‘90s, director Stephen Hopkins used it as the set-up for an action movie that has an awesome cast. Emilio Estevez, Cuba Gooding Jr., Jeremy Piven, and Stephen Dorff play the friends fighting to survive. Denis Leary is the leader of the criminal gang out for their blood. Unfortunately, not a lot of people went to see the movie when it was released… but they did make the soundtrack a hit. The movie is called Judgment Night, and it’s time for it to be Revisited.
Set-up: Judgment Night started out as a spec script written by Kevin Jarre, whose other credits include Rambo: First Blood Part 2,...

You can tell they shot Blood for Dust outside. People’s cold breath hangs in the wintry air, and it’s not the kind of wispy CGI breath that never seems to move quite right. Half-melted snow clings to the streets and straw-yellow Montana hills. The film’s title and poster would blend right into a direct-to-video lineup, but director Rod Blackhurst brings surprising texture and craft to bear on the otherwise familiar proceedings of this ’90s-set noir.
In a rare lead role, dependable and charismatic character actor Scoot McNairy plays Cliff, a traveling salesman whose tired eyes give away his success on the job. Maybe he was persuasive once, but he’s now tough to imagine peddling anything to anyone, much less the defibrillators that he crams into the back of his station wagon alongside the dummy he uses to demonstrate them. He even botches an attempt to blackmail...

Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary
If bustin’ makes you feel good, Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary should be at the top of your queue. Imagine Sam Raimi remaking Ghostbusters from a Kevin Williamson script, and you have a pretty good idea of what this Brazilian horror-comedy is like: gory, self-aware, irreverent, and wildly entertaining.
When a local high school summons Bloody Mary, the Ghoulbusters — a team of local YouTubers with a cheesy ghost hunting show — are called in to take out the vengeful spirit. "The only thing that matters, is that you are a man that no one would expect." The Avenue has revealed an official trailer for an indie small town crime thriller titled Blood For Dust, set for release starting in April. The film premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival last year, and it played at a number of other festivals including Deauville, San Diego, and Raindance. Described as "Breaking Bad meets Fargo", it's yet another of these gritty films about a guy with a troubled past that catches up to him. The same story as so many other films. Cliff, a traveling salesman drowning under the weight of providing for his family and the myth of the American dream, finds himself on a dangerous path after a chance encounter with Ricky, a colleague from a dark past. His once straight-laced life turns into a high-stakes game of survival. Starring Scoot McNairy as Cliff,...

Kit Harington and Scoot McNairy play old friends who reunite under dangerous circumstances in the first trailer for crime thriller Blood for Dust.
The Avenue is set to release director Rod Blackhurst’s feature in select theaters and on digital platforms April 19 following its premiere at last year’s Tribeca Festival. Josh Lucas and Stephen Dorff also star in Blood for Dust, which tells the story of Cliff (McNairy), a traveling salesman with financial issues who becomes enveloped in the world of drug trafficking after reuniting with Ricky (Harington).
“I don’t sell products that sell themselves,” Harington says in the trailer. This leads McNairy to respond, “You’re an arms dealer who sells drugs, Ricky.”
Blackhurst (Here Alone) helmed the film from a script by David Ebeltoft. Ryan Winterstern, Bernard Kira, Petr Jákl, Ari Novak, Arun Kumar, Bobby Campbell, Nathan Klingher, Mark Fasano and Noah Lang serve as producers.

Pop music phenoms come and go, fall in and out of favor and sometimes fade into total obscurity. Very few remain relevant a decade removed from their initial success, and you can count on maybe two hands the number of artists who can knock out a new song or reissue and top the Billboard charts 50-plus years after their debut.
And then there's The Beatles.
From the moment they scored their first number one hit in the U.K. with 1963's "From Me to You," The Beatles drew on their multitude of musical influences — blues, country, rockabilly, and the sui generis soul sounds pulsating out of Motown — to create perfectly constructed, infectiously catchy singles that earwormed their way into the fabric of your being. Within three years of breaking big in the U.S., they released the pioneering folk-rock LP "Rubber Soul," flirted with psychedelia and raga on the expansive "Revolver,...

It’s no mystery what “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto thinks of the fourth season, “True Detective: Night Country.” Yet showrunner Issa López isn’t taking Pizzolatto’s public criticisms personally.
Ten years since Pizzolatto’s anthology HBO series starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson debuted, the screenwriter took to Instagram to comment on how “Night Country” connects to the first season of “True Detective,” calling it “so stupid.” Despite serving as an executive producer on “Night Country,” Pizzolatto wrote (via screenshots of the comments), “I certainly did not have any input on this story or anything else. Jodie Foster in ‘True Detective: Night Country episode 1 (Photograph by Michele K. Short/HBO)
Two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster takes on her first starring role in a television series in 50 years with HBO’s True Detective: Night Country. The fourth season of the award-winning anthology series marks the first season without creator Nic Pizzolatto guiding the action. Instead, Night Country has Issa López at the helm as writer, director, and showrunner of what is easily the best season since the series’ first, proving a fresh set of eyes was exactly what was needed in this case.
Season one starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and season two focused on characters played by Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, and Rachel McAdams. Season three, which debuted in January 2019, starred Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, and Stephen Dorff. Through its first three seasons, HBO crime anthology True Detective liked to flirt with the occult. From Rust Cohle’s (Matthew McConaughey) otherworldly hallucinations in season 1 to the mystic hills of the Ozarks in season 3, the series frequently left the door open for realities beyond our own. Time is a flat circle, after all.
It’s only fitting then that True Detective season 4, subtitled True Detective: Night Country, has similarly cosmic origins. The season, which stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as detectives investigating mysterious disappearances during the perpetual night of winter in Northwest Alaska, came together in a kismet fashion. In a pre-season conversation with journalists, Night Country writer, director, and producer Issa López discussed how she was already working on a very True Detective-esque script before she got an actual True Detective call from HBO.

Liz Danvers, chief of police in the remote Alaska town of Ennis, and heroine of True Detective: Night Country, is fond of telling other cops they’re asking the wrong questions, prodding them over and over until they ask the right one. With Night Country, there’s only one question: Was it worth resurrecting the long-dormant True Detective franchise — and without its original creator, Nic Pizzolatto?

Comic book fans in the late 1990s likely recall the ambitious plan by Artisan Entertainment, a then-rising indie film studio, to make a long series of mid-budget films based on Marvel superheroes. Avi Arad, then the CEO of Marvel Entertainment, had overseen a deal that would allow Artisan to make movies with Black Panther, Thor, Deadpool, Ant-Man, Iron Fist, and Morbius, as well as Power Pack, Longshot, and an irreverent dark comedy about Mort the Dead Teenager. The deal was finalized in 2000. In 2003, however, Artisan was acquired by Lionsgate, effectively ending what would have been the ambitiously planned early-2000s mid-budget version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Despite how successful Disney's MCU would become a decade later, Marvel was once considered a non-viable source of film revenue. Indeed, while comic book sales were up across the board in the 1990s, Marvel was struggling to make their characters more visible in the marketplace.

Exclusive: Steven Soderbergh has dedicated more than four decades to shaping his legacy in Hollywood as a director, cinematographer and producer. But instead of splurging on yachts or a home in the South of France, he is investing in the future of independent filmmaking by mentoring directors like Joe and Anthony Russo, Christopher Nolan and most recently Eddie Alcazar. He and Alcazar’s second collaboration (after 2018’s Perfect) is Divinity, which hits theaters nationwide Friday after debuting at the Sundance Film Festival.
The film, set in an otherworldly human existence on a barren planet, follows Sterling Pierce (Scott Bakula), a scientist who has dedicated his life to the quest for immortality, slowly creating the building blocks of a groundbreaking serum known as “Divinity.” Jaxxon Pierce (Stephen Dorff), his son, now controls and manufactures his father’s once-benevolent dream. Society has been entirely perverted by the supremacy of the drug, whose...

Eccentric Silicon Valley billionaires who pour their fortunes into sci-fi-tinged humanitarian causes are often preoccupied by one of two problems: curing death, or solving the planet’s looming underpopulation crisis. For every corporate titan who claims to have shaved years off his body’s natural aging process by adapting an all-fungi diet, there’s another one cooking up a scheme to quintuple humanity’s population by spreading us across multiple planets.
In the two-dimensional comic book logic that these dreamers often live by, the two goals seem perfectly complementary. Artificially-induced immortality and rapid population growth are both hedges against the demise of humanity. They’re both ambitious declarations that the miracle of human consciousness will continue to live on no matter what indifference the universe decides to throw at us.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for “Divinity,” which releases in New York on Friday, Los Angeles on Oct. 20 and goes wide on Nov. 3.
In his latest movie “Divinity,” Stephen Dorff’s character is introduced with an extended sex scene and ends the film transformed into a monstrous, muscular creature with a “mushroom cloud” head that looks suspiciously like a penis. It’s not your average sci-fi movie, to say the least.
“Divinity” is a black-and-white, out-of-this-world indie, written and directed by Eddie Alcazar, that premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and received a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement ahead of its wide release. Dorff plays Jaxxon Pierce, the son of a scientist who invented a magical drug attempting to grant immortality. Years later, Jaxxon has taken control of his father’s company and corrupted his father’s original dream. The drug, called Divinity, grants its users youth and beauty,...

Two experimental films executive produced by Steven Soderbergh — Eddie Alcazar’s Divinity and Godfrey Reggio’s Once Within a Time – join Neon’s anticipated Cannes Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall in theaters today, a bit of counterprogramming on a weekend dominated by Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.
Divinity, about a dark and creepy future populated by bodybuilders hooked on an elixir for eternal life, “was always made for the theater,” said Alcazar. “But it’s kind of a roll of the dice of what a distributor wants to do with it.” Utopia, which acquired the black-and-white romp — set mostly in a mansion on a desert that looks like the moon — after its Sundance premiere (see Deadline review), opens Divinity at Regal Union Square in NYC, expanding to Los Angeles next week, with a national rollout on 11/3.
There will be opening-weekend Q&As with Alcazar, Soderbergh, star Stephen Dorff and DJ Muggs.

Horror Film School is a feature in which talent in front of and behind the camera share the ins and outs of creating the biggest onscreen scares.
Eddie Alcazar’s feature film debut “Divinity” is a lot of things scene-to-scene: a love story; an examination of how a father’s legacy can impact his son; a creature feature; a black and white sci-fi throwback; a stop motion masterpiece. Utilizing his low budget as a way to spark creativity, writer and director Eddie Alcazar successfully develops his dystopian vision of the future in which society is obsessed with the titular drug, which promises everlasting youth. Yet the director pauses when asked if he’d consider his dynamic midnight movie to be “weird.”
“I never really think about that too much,” he says. “‘Is this a commercial film or not?’ That’s a big thing I sometimes think about. It depends on...
