Stephen King is inarguably one of the most adapted authors in the world. The reigning overlord of the horror genre has seen his work translated to film and TV almost continually since his first novel, Carrie, was adapted in 1976. While he’s had his ups and downs in terms of success in those venues, it’s almost a certainty that the King adaptations will continue as the author himself keeps working well into his sixth decade as a published writer.
Naturally, most of the adaptations of King’s work focus on his horror or horror-adjacent output: just about everything from 1,000-page behemoths like the post-apocalyptic The Stand to 10-page short stories like the single-setting monster tale “The Boogeyman” have found their way to the screen. But while filmmakers and creators gravitate toward the King material that they think will scare audiences – after all, that’s his brand – some of the...

Edgar Wright is back in the limelight after producing “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off,” the critically adored anime expansion of “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” which reunites the entire cast of his beloved 2010 film. But the success of the Netflix series has many fans wondering when Wright will get back in the director’s chair for another movie.
In a new appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Wright offered some hints about what his first film since “Last Night in Soho” might be. The director gave an update on his planned reboot of “The Running Man,” Stephen King’s dystopian novel that inspired the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie of the same name. Richard Bachman's 1982 novel "The Running Man" is set in the far-off future of 2025 when corporate America is ruling the country, people are having trouble finding work, and appearing on salacious government-run game shows seems like a viable way to make money.
Contestants in "The Running Man" are deemed to be enemies of the state and are sentenced to execution. They are then set loose and hunted by government assassins, each one outfitted with a colorful gimmick. The contestants earn $100 for every hour they stay alive, with a $100 bonus for each cop they kill. If they live for 30 days, they win a billion dollars. The public takes bets on how long the contestants will survive before their inevitable slaughter.

“Every article mentions the ‘original’ actors by name. So why not just reboot Paul and me—as a couple of old farts solving piddly-ass crimes at the assisted living facility where we would now live? Who can do Starsky and Hutch better than him and me?”
The tweet received a whopping 34k likes, with some big names showing allegiance. One of those names was “Wonder Woman” actress Lynda Carter, who responded, “I’d watch this.”

Natasha Lyonne’s savvy, road-weary Charlie Cale is a fond homage to classic TV detectives like Jim Rockford and Lt. Frank Columbo: Like Rockford, she lives in a battered mobile home when we first meet her and she’s as dogged in solving crimes as the cigar-smoking Columbo. She also drives a bitchin’ 70s car and rocks a sweater that might have belonged to Paul Michael Glaser’s Starsky.

Exclusive: Transformers duo Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are producing a movie about iconic escape artist and illusionist Harry Houdini for Paramount.
Plot details are being kept under wraps on the untitled development project but we understand it will be set of its time in the early 20th Century and have a Sherlock Holmes tone, dealing as it does with a human superhero type.
Script is being written by Neil Weidener and Gavin James who are also working with the studio on Jerry Bruckheimer’s Beyblade project we revealed last week.
Houdini (born Erik Weisz) was the Hungarian-American stunt performer and mysteriarch, noted for his escape acts and his rags-to-riches immigrant story. He first attracted notice in vaudeville in the US and then as “Harry ‘Handcuff’ Houdini” on a tour of Europe, where he challenged police forces to keep him locked up. Hollywood has never been opposed to mining old territory for new projects, and today we have news about another one. Apparently, a new version of The Running Man is in development. Now, adapting the Stephen King novel and Arnold Schwarzenegger movie may seem like a pointless idea, but there’s an interesting twist here. What might that be? Well, none other than Edgar Wright is on board to direct this new take. That alone makes this worth paying attention to. Maybe it’ll turn out to be unnecessary, but with Wright involved, I’m at least curious to see how it turns out. There’s at least potential now for something fun… Here is a bit from the Variety story: Edgar Wright has been tapped to direct “The Running Man” for Paramount Pictures, an adaptation of Stephen King’s dystopian horror novel. “The Running Man,” published in 1982, was originally written...

Director Edgar Wright is lining up his next project, an adaptation of Stephen King’s dystopian sci-fi novel “The Running Man” for Paramount Pictures. Deadline first reported the news that Wright will be teaming with “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” screenwriter Michael Bacall on an adaptation that promises to be faithful to the source material, a 1982 book by King originally published under his pseudonym Richard Bachman. Wright and Bacall will write the story together, with Bacall penning the script.
The novel, set in the United States in the year 2025, previously inspired a 1987 sci-fi film, also called “The Running Man,” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and directed by Paul Michael Glaser. King’s novel is set in a totalitarian, violent, economically depressed world where protagonists participate in a game show called “The Running Man.” Contestants are allowed to go anywhere in the world, but are chased by Hunters assigned to kill them. Edgar Wright has been tapped to direct “The Running Man” for Paramount Pictures, an adaptation of Stephen King’s dystopian horror novel.
“The Running Man,” published in 1982, was originally written under King’s pseudonym Richard Bachman. The story takes place in the United States in the year 2025, which sees the economy in ruins and violence dramatically escalating. The book was loosely adapted into a 1987 film that was directed by Paul Michael Glaser and featured Arnold Schwarzenegger. The upcoming version is expected to stay more faithful to the source material. The cast has not been set yet.
Michael Bacall penned the script from a story he co-wrote with Wright. Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon will produce the film for Genre Films, as will Nira Park for Wright’s company Complete Fiction.
King’s novels, in genres ranging from horror and sci-fi to crime and fantasy, have been rich material for films and television shows.

Should filmmakers stick religiously to the source material? In the case of Stephen King adaptations, it can work very well both ways...
I watched The Shining recently, a film I haven’t seen for at least 15 years, maybe more. The first time I watched The Shining I was far too young for what was an X certificate movie at the time – VHS had opened the door to a whole host of viewing options for young teens – and I remember being disappointed at the lack of 'horror' on show. But when I revisited The Shining with more mature eyes, I realised that horror wasn’t just about violence and gore, and the truly disturbing nature of the film and its underlying story became clear.
Watching it again, now, I’m surprised at how powerful it still is. Yes, Shelly Duvall’s performance is still as comically insipid as it has always been,...

When I hear the words remake or reboot, I think “not as good as the original”. In 99% of the cases, this is true. There are anomalies like The Departed that are far superior to the original, but like I said, it is a rare case. Now, in the case of James Gunn, the thought of a reboot is rather interesting.
Recently it was announced that Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) would be taking on the rebooting of the 1970’s buddy cop TV show Starsky and Hutch. The series will be on Amazon and Gunn himself will be directing the pilot.
James Gunn went to Facebook to announce not only his involvement in the project but to get us as pumped as he is as well. This is what he had to say:
