We all know Trey Parker and Matt Stone from South Park, but what about all that came before it? Sure, some of us may have checked out Orgazmo to get an idea of what the boys were up to and maybe you even tracked down Cannibal! The Musical. But only the true die hard Parker and Stone fans have seen Your Studio and You. Styled after industrial movies of the 1950s – which would guide viewers through the process of any given corporation – Your Studio and You gives us a glimpse inside of Universal Studios…with exactly the sort of humor that fans would expect from Parker and Stone.
Released in 1995, Your Studio and You was a commissioned piece from David Zucker, who would go on to direct Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s BASEketball. Meant for internal studio use only, the 14-minute short begins by poking fun at “classic talking...

We all know that Danny Trejo has spent time in prison, with a criminal record going back to his youth and extending into the ‘60s, long before he got his acting going. And it was during one of his latter stints that Trejo came across a fella who had yet to get his music career off the ground: none other than Charles Manson, who himself was a career criminal when the two encountered each other. Fortunately, Trejo took a considerably different path than being responsible for maybe the most notorious murders of the century…but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have a unique experience with the cult leader.
Danny Trejo recalled meeting Charles Manson in the early ‘60s and even offering him protection. In turn, Manson introduced Trejo to the ways of hypnosis. “There were three people in my cell, and when we found out Charlie could hypnotize us,...

The chances that “Curb Your Enthusiasm” will add to its impressive total of 51 Emmy nominations during its current 12th and final season – which concludes with the series finale this Sunday April 7 over HBO and Max – are beginning to look pretty, pretty good. Let’s quickly go to the odds: Larry David himself currently ranks fourth for Best Comedy Actor at 5/1, while the series itself sits in fifth place for Best Comedy Series at 17/2.
In other words, there are a last few opportunities for the kind of delicious indignity that fuels David’s cranky and despairing life view – at least in the Larry David version we see on “Curb.”
See In honor of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’: A look back at its stellar awards history
The truth is that “Curb” has come up winless thus far in all 10 of its nominations for top comedy series. That’s a record for a comedy.

While underrated upon its release, as John Carpenter’s The Thing failed to make it big commercially following its competition with other sci-fi releases at the time, time has been kind to it. Not only has the sci-fi horror gone on to garner cult status, but many have also deemed it among one of the greatest films the genre has to offer, even deeming it more important than Carpenter’s Halloween.
And the film’s influence is significantly visible in InnerSloth LLC’s Among Us. Hence, it only makes sense for the upcoming adaptation of the game to take further inspiration from the horror, and following its synopsis, it seems like the case.

She’s back, back, back again! Oscar-winning actress Ariana DeBose will once again return to host the 77th Annual Tony Awards live from the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center on Sunday, June 16. This marks her third consecutive year emceeing Broadway’s biggest night.
In addition to working the crowd, DeBose will also serve as a producer and choreograph the show’s opening number. The actress has always opened the show with a bang. But this will mark the first time she has crafted a dance number herself for the telecast. DeBose was nominated for an Emmy for hosting the 75th Annual Tony Awards ceremony, in the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) category. She could compete in that race again, but it looks like the 2024 telecast may also find the triple-threat performer eligible for the Emmy’s choreography category.

The actors from the current revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s “Merrily We Roll Along” have skyrocketed in Gold Derby’s combined odds for the 2024 Tony Awards nominations. The prediction center displays commanding leads for Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe to win their respective categories. This is an understandable result considering this revival is the hottest ticket in town and this trio of performers has been ever-present in the media. But how often does a trio of actors from the same production pull off three separate acting victories at the Tony Awards?
It’s quite common for a musical to grab two acting trophies, but three awards is much rarer. To date, only 15 musical productions have earned three acting wins. The first time this feat occurred was at the 1956 ceremony, which was ironically the first time the Tony Awards ever announced a slate of nominees (previously...

The Oscar heavyweight, Grammy-winning great and all-around icon, Barbra Streisand was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.
“This is such a wonderful award to get because you know in advance you’re going to get it. You don’t have to sit there in squirm… And if you don’t have to put on such a happy face, ‘I’m so happy to lose!’ Anyway, you all know what I mean,” the legend joked.
Pivoting to more serious matters, Streisand revealed that she was proud to be a SAG-AFTRA member for over 60 years, “I can’t believe it. I remember dreaming of being an actress as a teenager, sitting in my bed in Brooklyn with a pint of coffee ice cream and a movie magazine.”
But in the end, Streisand dedicated her lifetime achievement speech to the actors among her in the auditorium.

What makes an actor? Since the very first Screen Actors Guild Awards in 1995, actors have shared what it means to work in Hollywood with the “I am an actor” speech.
The tradition began with Angela Lansbury, who detailed her accomplishments on screen at the inaugural SAG Awards: “I’ve been Elizabeth Taylor’s sister, Spencer Tracy’s mistress, Elvis’ mother, and a singing teapot,” she said. She reminded her peers that, “at one time or another, everyone loves the opportunity to act,” even a child with a creative imagination for playing pretend. And she embraced the spirit of the SAG Awards as a night dedicated to “the art and craft of acting by the people who should know about it.”

After closing out January with the very gay (and very terrible) The Covenant (listen) and the pseudo-remake of Single White Female: The Roommate (listen), we kicked off February with journey to the world of H.P. Lovecraft in Re-Animator. Now, we’re traveling back in time to discuss Albert Lewin‘s 1945 adaptation of The Portrait of Dorian Gray.
In The Picture of Dorian Gray, Lord Henry Wotton (George Sanders), tells his friend Dorian Gray (Hurd Hatfield) that men should pursue their sensual longings, but laments that only the young get to do so. Taken with the idea, Dorian inadvertently makes a Faustian bargain to stay young forever. His wish comes true, and his boyish looks aid him as he indulges his every whim. Unfortunately, his sins take physical form on a portrait of himself, and as the years go by he must decide what type of man he wants to be.

There’s a fascinating Instagram account that digs up paparazzi shots of stars attending premieres and film events in the 1990s. The main attraction is the outlandish fashion, but also the randomness of the guest list and the questions the images throw up: why were Angela Lansbury and John Oates invited to the Untouchables premiere in 1987? Did Sidney Poitier really enjoy Predator 2? Why did Richard Harris decide to bring his dog to the 1993 Independent Film awards?
One that caught my eye recently was the premiere of Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting in New York. Metallica are there, looking wild-eyed and inebriated, as is a smouldering Ray Liotta. An incredibly young-looking trio of Jonny Lee Miller, Boyle and Ewen Bremner attempt to fit in.

The late Friends actor Matthew Perry was honored at the 2023 Emmy Awards during its In Memoriam on Monday night.
Singer Charlie Puth and duo The War and Treaty performed a rendition of Puth and Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” as photos of late television stars were shown, including Lance Reddick, Angela Lansbury, Stephen “Twitch” Boss and Norman Lear.
As the song came to a close, the singers transitioned into the Friends theme song, “I’ll Be There for You” by The Rembrandts. More stars flashed across the screen before Perry was honored at the end.
Perry died in October from “acute effects of ketamine.” The Los Angeles Police Department closed its investigation into the 54-year-old actor’s death earlier this month.
The cast and crew of Friends have honored Perry individually and together, with his five other costars releasing a joint statement after his passing.

The TV Academy tonight paid poignant tribute to those who’ve passed away in the past 12 months. Among the big names highlighted by the In Memoriam segment were Norman Lear, Matthew Perry, Angela Lansbury and Andre Braugher.
Charlie Puth and husband-and-wife duo The War and Treaty accompanied this year’s “In Memoriam” video montage as it unspooled with a rendition of “See You Again.” The segment started off with Lear and ended with Perry.
Soon after it aired on Fox, fans took to social media to express their disapproval over omissions, the biggest being Ryan O’Neal. Known for his film work, O’Neal, who died December 8, also co-starred on the TV series Peyton Place from 1964-69.
O’Neal’s son Patrick said on Twitter that he was “sad and mad” over the decision to exclude his dad from the tribute.

The In Memoriam segment of the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday paid a moving tribute to several television stars, creators and producers who have died over the last year — but social media was quick to point out the omissions.
Users on X, formerly Twitter, were upset that missing from the video montage of the In Memoriam segment were Ryan O’Neal and Ray Stevenson. O’Neal, who died Dec. 8 at age 82, had television credits stretching back to the 1960s, and he had notable roles on the soap Peyton Place and the sitcom Good Sports and also had a run on Bones.
Stevenson, who died May 23 at age 58, was most recently seen in the Disney+ Star Wars series Ahsoka, and worked consistently in television since the 1990s. His notable television credits include Vikings, Dexter and Rome.

Viewers were left baffled on Monday, January 15, when the 2023 Emmy Awards left several stars out of the show’s emotional In Memoriam tribute. The segment, which pays tribute to stars who passed away since the previous year’s (September 2022) ceremony, honored the likes of Norman Lear, Angela Lansbury, and Andre Braugher. As such, Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers introduced the segment in light of the recent loss of Lear, the pioneering producer renowned for creating groundbreaking series like their All in the Family, as well as Sanford and Son, One Day at a Time, The Jeffersons, and Good Times. As the presentation started, several stars appeared to the tune of Charlie Puth‘s “See You Again,” which shifted to a special tribute to Matthew Perry accompanied by the theme song of Friends. Matthew Perry received an emotional tribute during the 2023 Emmys In Memoriam segment, which also included late stars such as Len Goodman, Andre Braugher, Lance Reddick, Paul Reubens, Barbara Walters, Angela Lansbury, Kirstie Alley and more. Pop singer Charlie Puth and singer-songwriter duo The War and Treaty performed during the segment, first starting with a rendition of Puth’s “See You Again” before delivering a stripped-down cover of the “Friends” theme song (“I’ll Be There for You” by The Rembrandts).

Few television characters felt more appropriate to revisit in the covid era than Tony Shalhoub’s Adrian Monk, the brilliant homicide detective who suffered from debilitating obsessive compulsive disorder. Though the original run of “Monk” ended in 2009 long before the pandemic began, the character returned — like TV detectives including Angela Lansbury’s Jessica Fletcher — in a movie titled “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie.” For his encore performance in one of his most beloved roles, Shalhoub could return to the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
According to our current combined odds, Shalhoub ranks just outside our top 10 in 11th place in the Limited/Movie Actor category. Glynis Johns, the upbeat leading lady with the British charm who starred as the spirited feminist mother Winifred Banks in Mary Poppins, has died. She was 100.
Johns lived in West Hollywood and died Thursday of natural causes at an assisted living facility in the area, her manager, Mitch Clem, told The Hollywood Reporter.
A multitalented actress, dancer, pianist and singer, Johns earned a best supporting actress Oscar nomination for playing the widowed saloon and hotel owner Mrs. Firth in Fred Zinnemann’s Australia-set The Sundowners (1960).

For 12 seasons, "Murder, She Wrote" was the definitive cozy murder mystery show. Set in the small and charming yet dead-body-filled fictional town of Cabot Cove, Maine, the show wormed its way into the hearts of procedural fans everywhere with its familiar structure and unlikely hero -- middle-aged mystery writer Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury). While the actor behind the beloved amateur sleuth passed away in 2022, "Murder, She Wrote" lives on, both in the form of much-watched reruns and in an upcoming movie adaptation.
Little is known about the new version of "Murder, She Wrote" at this point, but screenwriters Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo have said that the story will relate back to Cabot Cove and Jessica in some capacity. When it comes to potential cameos from old cast members, the pool is unfortunately limited, as several of the series' lead actors have passed away in the decades since the show ended.

It didn't matter where Andy Griffth showed up in TV or film, the shadow of amiable Sheriff Andrew Jackson "Andy" Taylor and, during the actor's twilight years, the irascible defense attorney Ben Matlock always hung heavily over his head. Likewise, for all of Angela Lansbury's many, many accomplishments performing on the stage and screen, certain people could only ever look at her and see their favorite cardigan-loving author-sleuth, Jessica Fletcher.
Lucille Désirée Ball was firmly cognizant of just how strongly the masses identified her with her incorrigible onscreen counterpart, Lucille Esmeralda "Lucy" McGillicuddy Ricardo, from "I Love Lucy," having played the iconic trouble-maker across the series' 180 episodes in the 1950s. This was also the main factor that led to her passing on another classic sitcom, "Cheers," decades later.

What would the cozy crime-solving world of Jessica Fletcher look like if "Murder, She Wrote" were made in 2023 rather than the '80s? Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, the writers of this year's GameStop stocks dramedy "Dumb Money," are prepared to answer that question. The pair have been tapped to write a movie adaptation of "Murder, She Wrote," and while a big-screen version of Cabot Cove may seem antithetical to the weekend binge-watch vibe of the original series, Schuker Blum and Angelo have plenty of ideas about how to bring Jessica into the 21st century.
"We were both kids who were suburban kids who just grew up watching 'Murder, She Wrote,' and anything else that broadcast TV fed to us," Angelo told /Film's Ben Pearson in a recent interview alongside her co-writer. She noted that the big-screen adaptation of the long-running series "has been the love of...

He’s a mean-spirited, cynical, and sarcastic creature who just does not get the appeal of Christmas. He doesn’t enjoy the racket that Christmas causes and prefers to be in a quiet, peaceful place instead. But when the folks of Whoville go too far with their festivities, he vows to destroy Christmas once and for all.

Though it’s difficult to imagine anyone but Angela Lansbury in the lead role as Jessica Fletcher, word is there’s a Murder, She Wrote movie in the works. During the original show’s run, Lansbury made the role her own, earning an Emmy nomination during each of the show’s 12 seasons. And though Lansbury had been an actress of some acclaim in earlier decades (she’d earned three Oscar nominations in the 1940s), it really wasn’t until Murder, She Wrote that she became a household name. Before she passed away in 2022, we spoke to her several times, and she was always grateful for the opportunities the show provided. November is here, and that means the holiday season isn’t far behind! Christmas is now fewer than eight weeks out, and many lovers of the yuletide time of year are already setting up their holiday watchlists. There have been three Grinch movies made thus far; 1966’s animated classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” the Jim Carrey-starring live-action movie of the same name which first came out in 2000, and 2018’s animated “The Grinch,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the holiday-loathing titular character.

Last year, legendary filmmaker John Carpenter teamed up with Shout! Factory to host a kaiju movie marathon called Masters of Monsters, which consisted of the original Godzilla film, Rodan; Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster, and The War of the Gargantuas. That marathon was re-run earlier this month. Now the folks at Far Out magazine have dug up a 1996 article from Film Comment magazine in which Carpenter named The War of the Gargantuas as “the ultimate Japanese monster movie” – and included it on a list of his seventeen favorite “guilty pleasure” movies. It’s a fun list, so we have it included below, with thanks to this site.
Carpenter started out the Film Comment guilty pleasures article by saying, “I wasn’t raised a Catholic, so guilt never played much of a role in my life. We Methodists don’t worry about guilt all that much. In terms of cinema, however, guilt has always been very important.

Actor Octavia Spencer was supposed to be the star of a contemporary version of Angela Lansbury’s Murder, She Wrote. When she told Julia Roberts the news, however, Roberts couldn’t contain her shock.

Murder, She Wrote was once due for a modern makeover. There weren’t too many details provided about Spencer’s newer version of the series. What was known at the time was that Spencer’s character would be slightly different than Lansbury’s. Aside from the differences in skin color, Spencer was going to portray a Hospital administrator and mystery writer. This would’ve been slightly different than Lansbury’s version, who was a successful mystery writer on top of being a skilled detective.

Stephen Sondheim has almost never been more popular than in the two years since his passing in November 2021. In that time, celebrated revivals of “Company,” “Into the Woods,” and “Sweeney Todd” have come to Broadway, and successful remounting of “Assassins” and “Merrily We Roll Along” have played Off-Broadway, which is a testament to the enduring appeal of his works.
This fall will once again spotlight Sondheim. The tremendously successful Off-Broadway run of “Merrily” starring Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and Daniel Radcliffe opens on Broadway on October 10, which will mark the first remounting since its original, unsuccessful run in 1981. In addition, his final musical “Here We Are,” which is based on two Luis Buñuel films—“The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” and “The Exterminating Angel”—will have its highly-anticipated world premiere Off-Broadway, opening on October 22.

To the list of TV series being turned into films we can now, finally add Murder, She Wrote. And we say, "finally" because this is one that you'd have enough cult appeal and a compelling hook to have headed to cinemas years ago. But according to Above The Line, the series, which starred Angela Lansbury as crime writer/ace sleuth Jessica Fletcher is the subject of a new potential film from Universal.
Power producer Amy Pascal has Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, who wrote upcoming GameStop share affair comedy drama Dumb Money, attached to craft the script (though any forward movement on it will have to wait until the writers and actors' strike is over).
Murder, She Wrote ran on TV between 1984 and 1996. Lansbury's Fletcher outwitted criminals (and the police) and solved murders both in her home town of Cabot Cove and around the States/abroad.

Blum and Angelo joined the project prior to the writers strike, and will not resume their work on the screenplay until the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have reached a deal. The “Murder, She Wrote” film is among the writers’ next projects, Blum and Angelo’s representatives shared with Variety.
The original “Murder, She Wrote” series starred Angela Lansbury as mystery writer and amateur detective Jessica Fletcher, who solves murders that occur in the fictional town of Cabot Cove, Maine.
