The new Karate Kid movie, starring Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, was set to have a release date coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the original 1984 movie in June 2024. However, the strikes of 2023 moved this release date to December 13, 2024. Now, the latest upsetting update suggests that the movie will not be released during its 40th anniversary year at all. The new date of release for the movie is May 30, 2025.

The change in dates has triggered a backward domino effect as Sony pushed the date of release of Kraven the Hunter to Karate Kid‘s original date of December 13 this year. This makes the Aaron Taylor-Johnson film one of the only R-rated films during the Christmas holidays this year.

Renowned cult classics have undoubtedly provided us with several mentor-like figures, but among all, Pat Morita’s Mr. Miyagi from The Karate Kid remains the most beloved one. When Cobra Kai returns to Netflix for its sixth and final season, the Karate Kid spinoff plans to expand the Miyagiverse significantly. The teen-focused drama Crane kicked martial arts action fans in the face in 2018, building on the Karate Kid legacy started by Ralph Macchio (Daniel Larusso), William Zabka (Johnny Lawrence), and Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi). With every season, Cobra Kai has grown through fan-service casting, interpersonal drama, and hard-hitting action. No one could have predicted the Miyagiverse would expand the way it has because of Cobra Kai, and now the show’s co-creator, Jon Hurwitz, says fans can expect Season 6 to explore the franchise in exciting ways like never before!
In a thread on Twitter/X, Hurwitz assured fans the final season of the series delivers big surprises, in-depth character flashbacks, and plot elements that expand the Miyagiverse.
“Season 6 expands the ‘Karate Kid/Cobra Kai’ universe more than the first 5 seasons combined.

The number of actors the Netflix TV series Cobra Kai has brought back to reprise their characters from the Karate Kid films has been very impressive. Not only do you have Ralph Macchio and William Zabka back as Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence, but there’s also Martin Kove and Thomas Ian Griffith as villains John Kreese and Terry Silver, Yuji Okumoto and Sean Kanan as villains-turned-allies Chozen Toguchi and Mike Barnes; Ron Thomas, Rob Garrison, and Tony O’Dell as Johnny’s former Cobra Kai buddies; and appearances by Elisabeth Shue as Ali Mills, Tamlyn Tomita as Kumiko, and Robyn Lively as Jessica Andrews. They even brought Traci Toguchi back as Yuna, the “Girl Bell Ringer” she played in The Karate Kid Part II. But one actor who might not be returning from the films is Hilary Swank, who played Julie Pierce in the 1994 film The Next Karate Kid.

Nearly four decades ago, NBC brought Babes in Toyland back to life with an all-star cast.
The holiday project was based on the 1903 operetta, which features Victor Herbert’s score — including Christmas staple “Toyland” — and a libretto from Glen MacDonough that draws together numerous Mother Goose characters. It followed such previous adaptations as a 1934 Laurel and Hardy film, a 1960 Shirley Temple-led TV version and a 1961 Disney movie starring Annette Funicello.
Filmmaker Clive Donner — whose 1965 comedy What’s New Pussycat? marked Woody Allen’s first produced screenplay — directed Babes in Toyland from a script by Paul Zindel (Mame).
Shot in Munich, it starred 11-year-old Drew Barrymore as Lisa, who has no interest in toys until she gets magically transported to Toyland on Christmas Eve, where she teams up with the Toymaster (Pat Morita, fresh off The Karate Kid Part II) to stop the villainous Barnaby Barnicle (Richard Mulligan) from taking over the realm.

Out of all the successful shared universes to come about over the years, the "Karate Kid" franchise might be the most surprising. Also known as the Miyagi-Verse and named in honor of the martial arts maestro Mr. Miyagi, the property kicked off in 1984 with director John G. Avildsen's "The Karate Kid," a rousing sports drama cut from the same cloth as the filmmaker's Best Picture Oscar-winning "Rocky," albeit focused on martial arts rather than boxing. But besides establishing "Wax on, wax off" as a fixture of our pop cultural lexicon, the film also birthed two sequel films, a spinoff film, a reboot film, a live-action legacy sequel show, and even a short-lived, non-canonical '80s cartoon series.
For a long time, however, it was assumed the 2010 "Karate Kid" reboot and the 1984 original existed in different continuities. But no more! Just as the popular "Cobra Kai" series has seen Miyagai's...

A global casting search is underway for the lead role in the forthcoming Karate Kid film — but the cast list has two essential roles already covered. Set for release in December 2024, the Sony Pictures film will find Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio returning to the franchise.
Macchio appeared in the original Karate Kid film, released in 1984, in the role of 15-year-old Daniel Larusso. He subsequently starred in the 1986 and 1989 sequels before reprising his role in the action comedy-drama series Cobra Kai in 2018.
Chan made his debut in the Karate Kid universe in the 2010 remake.

Here's a crossover you never knew you needed until now. Decades after the original "The Karate Kid" put star Ralph Macchio on the map and introduced audiences to Pat Morita's beloved Mr. Miyagi, Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith took a crack at remaking the classic in 2010 -- though in a modernized setting and, notably, not portraying the exact same characters from the original. The franchise kept the nostalgia going with Netflix's popular "Cobra Kai" series, which reunited Macchio's Daniel Larusso with William Zabka's Johnny Lawrence. Now, not even the Cobra Kai dojo feels big enough to contain what's coming down the pipeline next.
Sony Pictures breathlessly announced that a new "Karate Kid" movie is officially in the works. But get this: the twist is that both Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio have been cast and will be "reprising their characters" from the respective franchise films they previously starred in.

According to sources, Lee will portray Master Kim Sun-Young, a character that has previously appeared only in flashback form by Jun Chong in The Karate Kid and later Don Lee in Cobra Kai. Master Kim is presumed dead and at this time it is unknown whether Lee will appear in flashback form only.

Pat E. Johnson, known for choreographing fights and training actors for “The Karate Kid” films, has died of natural causes at his Los Angeles home. He was 84.
Johnson’s niece Colleen Mary Johnson Summerville confirmed the news on Facebook, writing, “It is with a sad heart I’m sharing my Uncle Pat has passed this Sunday morning.”
Johnson held the title of ninth-degree black belt, putting his martial arts skills to use on the set of the beloved coming-of-age film “The Karate Kid” (1984), training actors including Pat Morita and Ralph Macchio. Morita’s Mr. Miyagi trains Macchio’s Daniel Larusso in the art of karate after bullies begin antagonizing him at his new school in Los Angeles.
Johnson taught Macchio the now-iconic crane kick which won Daniel the championship at the All Valley karate tournament in the first film. He also acted as referee in the film.

Forget the pleasantries, today sucks. Paul Reubens, best known for his incomparable work as Pee-wee Herman, has passed away. The weird, wacky, and wonderful comedy figure is one of the most influential creatives ever to do it, and left in his wake is an irreplaceable void of silly, absurdist joy. Reubens' created the character of Pee-wee Herman while performing with The Groundlings, the legendary improvisational comedy troupe boasting alumni like Laraine Newman, Pat Morita, Craig T. Nelson, Jon Lovitz, Adrienne Barbeau, Conan O'Brien, Phil Hartman, Phil Lamarr, Lisa Kudrow, Jennifer Coolidge, Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, Will Forte, Annie Mumolo, Kaitlin Olson, Edi Patterson, Tony Cavalero, and a ridiculous number of other eventual "Saturday Night Live" players.

The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
Pool Party Massacre
Summer is well underway, and if you’ve already exhausted all the seasonal classics, Pool Party Massacre can fill the void with a comedic send-up to ’80s slashers like Slumber Party Massacre and Sleepaway Camp (both also on Screambox). Written and directed by Drew Marvick, the 2017 low-budget indie embraces the era with 80 minutes of over-the-top characters, campy performances, and cheesy practical effects.
The titular party isn’t very festive; it’s more like a small gathering of vapid, Real Housewives rejects that barely tolerate one another while lounging by the pool. One by one, a character excuses themselves — including, in one instance,...

Up until now, the Karate Kid franchise has lived on solely through the "Cobra Kai" TV series, but in 2024, it's set to return to the big screen with a brand-new movie. The untitled project will mark the sixth installment in the franchise and will release exactly 40 years after the first Karate Kid film premiered in 1984. The original movie starred Ralph Macchio as a teenager named Daniel Larusso, who learns karate from martial arts master Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) in order to defend himself against a group of bullies, one of whom includes Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). Since their rivalry is also at the center of "Cobra Kai," we're left to wonder whether the new film will bring the iconic pair back once more.
In September 2022, Macchio told Entertainment Weekly that he wasn't attached to the project, however, since the movie was still in its early stages, anything could happen. "I...

Over 2003-11, Catalonia’s regional film hub was the envy of Europe. Now, it’s enjoying the full flush of a second renaissance and growing its international impact in film and now TV. In 2022, three Catalan directors had titles in the main competition in Berlin and Cannes, more than Italy (two), Germany (one) or the U.K. (none). Helmer Carla Simon’s “Alcarràs” won Berlin’s top prize, the Golden Bear.
In 2023, five Catalan features have made Berlin’s fest cut, led by Estibaliz Urresola’s competition contender “20,000 Species of Bees,” Alvaro Gago’s “Matria” in Panorama and Carla Subirana’s “Sica,” a Generation 14plus player.
The most spectacular advance, however, comes in Catalonia’s Berlinale TV lineup. “The Chauffeur’s Son,” backed by “Elite” producer Zeta Studios and created by Isaki Lacuesta and Isa Campos, competes in Co-Pro Series. “This Is Not Sweden,” backed by Spain’s Rtve and Swedish pubcaster Svt,...

Knowing that Cobra Kai Season 6 will be the final season is a little bit sad. Cobra Kai gave Karate Kid fans so much joy and introduced a whole new generation of karate kids. At least ending the show now means the inevitable legacy revival will happen even sooner. The final season of Cobra Kai is sure to end with a bang. Here are seven burning questions we hope the Cobra Kai final season answers.

Pat Morita made history with The Karate Kid film series. His image is still used in memes, on posters, and around the world, even decades after his death. He is a man who made an impact with one role, with the script handed to him, and it made him famous. He was, of course, already famous. Pat Morita was a regular on the hit show Happy Days long before he starred as Mr. Miyagi in The Karate Kid. He was the affable Matsuo Arnold Takahashi in Happy Days, and fans loved him. The Karate Kid has to be one of the most unexpectedly massive franchises of all time. In 1984, John G. Avildsen’s The Karate Kid was a modestly budgeted underdog story (in the Rocky mode) featuring two unknown leads, Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita. At the time, Macchio was mainly known for playing the doomed Johnny in The Outsiders, while Morita was known as the wacky Arnold from Happy Days. The 8 million movie would gross 100 million in 1984, and the sequel, The Karate Kid – Part II – would make even more, grossing 115 million and giving us the Peter Cetera classic (to some) “The Glory of Love.”
The franchise would die, for a while, when The Karate Kid – Part III flopped with a measly 38 million gross, while The Next Karate Kid would fare even worse. For the longest time, it looked like the franchise was dead, especially when Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan...

With the amazing success of Cobra Kai on Netflix, The Karate Kid is back in the cultural zeitgeist in a big way. People love John G. Avildsen’s classic underdog tale of a young man (Ralph Macchio’s Daniel Larusso) and his triumph over bullies with the help of a gentle Japanese handyman (Pat Morita’s Mr. Miyagi) who happens to be a secret karate master. The sensei/student relationship is one of the ages. With Cobra Kai fandom at an all-time high, he decided to look back at the original movie and its iconic locations in this episode of “Where It Was Made.”
In this episode, our host Ryan Cultrera takes us on a wild tour of The Karate Kid’s iconic Reseda locations. He starts on the red carpet of the Cobra Kai S5 premiere and then backtracks to where it all began, the humble apartment building where Daniel and Miyagi first met.

For some actors, one series of movies can go on to define their entire career. For Daniel Radcliffe, it's the "Harry Potter" franchise. For Michael J. Fox, it's the "Back to the Future" franchise. For Ralph Macchio, it also could have been the "Back to the Future" franchise, but he was deemed "too east coast" for the role. Luckily for Macchio, he already had a career-defining franchise in hand with the "Karate Kid" films. The story of a kid from Brooklyn being taught karate by his wise building maintenance man spawned two sequels, multiple spin-offs, and a hit Netflix series. For Macchio, that's practically a lifetime of work just from one franchise.
But Macchio didn't know immediately that the script he received about a kid doing karate would become his life's work. According to a recent interview on the "Happy, Sad, Confused" podcast, when Macchio first got a call about the film,...

As Mr. Miyagi once said, “No such thing as bad student, only bad teacher. Teacher say, student do.” Well, it seems both Pat Morita and Ralph Macchio were good teachers and students. Macchio is now paying respect to the late Morita, penning an essay in tribute to his late sensei.
As part of People’s “What I Wish I Could Tell You” series, Ralph Macchio authored a rather touching piece in tribute to Pat Morita, who passed away in 2005 at the age of 73. “The legacy of your work and contribution to the world in your portrayal of Mr. Miyagi shines brighter than ever.”
Ralph Macchio also noted how Daniel Larusso on Cobra Kai is directly tied to that of Mr. Miyagi in the Karate Kid movies. “I have this wonderful opportunity to walk in your sensei shoes as I impart the wisdom and experiences of our days together. The spirit...

Decades ago, a story was brought to light that wasn’t perfect, but it was satisfying in the same way that a home-cooked meal is satisfying, it leaves you ready to move on, and it remains a good memory that you want to keep. The Karate Kid served this purpose for decades before Cobra Kai came around for a number of reasons, but one of the best was that Mr. Miyagi was one of the best characters in the entire franchise. People have debated who was really at fault when it comes to Daniel and Johnny, and some have even labeled

If the revival of "The Karate Kid" franchise in the form of "Cobra Kai" wasn't enough for your martial arts cravings, then Hasbro has a next-level crossover that will both blow your mind and confound your senses. After a collection of action figure two-packs teamed up characters from "Cobra Kai" with the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," Daniel Larusso has been imbued with the might of the "Power Rangers."
Hasbro revealed a trio of action figures taking cues from both "Cobra Kai" and "Power Rangers" by turning a couple of the west coast's finest martial artists into Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. However, instead of suiting up Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and his daughter Samantha (Mary Mouser) in the full Power Rangers suits, they've given them the ninja wardrobes first glimpsed in "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie" back in the 90s. When an actor does such a good job at playing their role, it's hard to imagine anyone else taking their place — a testament to the casting director's final call. But it doesn't always mean that they were originally the first (or even third) choice for the role. Sometimes, the best option isn't so obvious.
Such was the case when Delphi II Productions began the process of casting Mr. Miyagi for "The Karate Kid." As the movie's star Ralph Macchio shared in his recent memoir, "Waxing On: The Karate Kid and Me" (which /Film's Jenna Busch spoke to the actor about), most of the team was doubtful about the late Pat Morita's ability to play Mr. Miyagi since the relatively serious character was a big change from his previous comical roles:
"The focus was on the dramatic side of the character. Finding an actor of range and depth who would be authentic.

Eric Stoltz being cast as Marty McFly and spending several weeks filming the role before Michael J. Fox replaced him is easily one of the most widely-known pieces of "Back to the Future" trivia there is and for obvious reasons. But as fascinating as it is to wonder what might've been had Stoltz gotten to drive Emmett "Doc" Brown's time-traveling DeLorean all the way to the finish line, he's far from the only "What if?" bit of casting when it comes to that McFly kid.
With Robert Zemeckis directing hot off his 1984 breakout film "Romancing the Stone" and Steven Spielberg producing, "Back to the Future" had its pick of up-and-coming actors to cast as Marty. That included Ralph Macchio, who had only just shown off his waxing skills and crane-kicking to the world in "The Karate Kid" a few months before he met Zemeckis and Spielberg in the fall of...

There are two things everyone who has seen "The Karate Kid" has tried to attempt. The first is the famous Crane Kick that Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) employs at the end of the film to knock out Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) for the All Valley Championship, and the second is catching a fly with chopsticks. Obviously, this is a near-impossible task, but with Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) as your sensei, nothing is impossible.
The scene in question involves Daniel watching as Mr. Miyagi tries and retries to nab a fly out of the air with a pair of chopsticks. With true Larusso sass, Daniel asks if perhaps using a fly swatter might make the whole thing go a little faster, but Miyagi uses this opportunity to dispense some of that all-knowing wisdom of his and replies, "Man who catch fly with chopstick, accomplish anything." Imagining the climax of "The Karate Kid" without Daniel Larusso's iconic crane kick is like trying to listen to John Williams' "Duel of the Fates" without a lightsaber battle. All seems lost after our underdog hero played by Ralph Macchio has had his leg swept by the villainous Johnny Lawrence (Billy Zabka), but thanks to the balancing act of a crane kick, Larusso wins the tournament and scores his winning point with the move.
Ironically, the crane kick almost didn't happen, because it's not only a completely made-up move for the film, but it's ridiculously hard to execute. In Macchio's new memoir, "Waxing On: The Karate Kid and Me," there's an entire passage about the crane kick that almost never was. According to Macchio's book (which /Film's own Jenna Busch recently spoke with Macchio about), the crane kick was invented by screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen, a move that sounded cool...
