As the star of Family Ties for its 1982 to 1989 run, Michael Gross became a member of a rare club: one of TV’s favorite dads. And fans will be happy to know that he’s still close with his on-screen wife and one of TV’s favorite moms, Meredith Baxter. "We’re both 71 now and met when we were [around] 35, so we’ve known each other half our lives," Michael exclusively marveled to Closer Weekly in the magazine's latest issue, on newsstands now. "We’ve maintained a good relationship and never lost touch." Now audiences can witness their chemistry in person as they star in the A. R. Gurney play Love Letters, currently touring select cities around the country. Michael is also back on TV this holiday season playing a loving father in the Lifetime movie Christmas Pen Pals. The 1980s were a long time ago, and while Michael J. Fox is still so well known around the world, it may be difficult to remember just how big he really was. Think about it this way: his Classic TV sitcom Family Ties made its debut in 1982. Two years later, NBC introduced The Cosby Show, which became an absolute ratings sensation. Then the network placed Family Ties right behind that series, resulting in it becoming the second highest rated show on TV. Michael's comic brilliance caught the attention of producer Steven Spielberg and director Robert Zemeckis, and he was given permission from the show's creator, Gary David Goldberg, to shoot Family Ties during the day and the feature film Back to the Future at night. That film became the biggest moneymaker of 1985, turned the low budget Teen Wolf (shot earlier but released after Bttf) into a hit, and elevated the...

What’s old is new again. Or at least prime for a reboot of some sort. Playbill.com is reporting that Family Ties, the sitcom that turned Michael J. Fox into a household name, is being turned into a stage play. Araca Group, the production company behind such well known plays as Wicked and Book of Mormon, will lead the project. They’ve already signed on Kleban Award winner Daniel Goldstein to write the script. The Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning sitcom, which ran on NBC from 1982-89, centers on former hippies (Michael Gross, Meredith Baxter) and their experiences raising their family in suburbia. Fox played their son Alex, a young Republican. Justine Batemen and Tina Yothers were cast as the two daughters. Later in the show’s run, the family had another child, Andrew (Brian Bonsall). “Family Ties is a timeless comedy featuring a close-knit American family with vastly differing interests and politics,...

Family Ties was a huge hit for NBC during the 1980s, and the cast reunited today for an appearance on The Today Show. The popular family comedy ended after seven seasons on NBC in 1989.
The series helped launch the career of Michael J. Fox, but it also starred Michael Gross, Meredith Baxter, Justin Bateman, and Tina Yothers.
Fox, Gross, and Baxter have continued to work in Hollywood after the end of Family Ties, but Yothers and Bateman have left the limelight of the acting business behind. Bateman is a senior in college, and Yothers is raising a family.
The cast made it clear that the family act on television was not just an act. They formed a close bond behind the scenes as well.

"But at the same time I understand. This is a time when our nation is changing so much. And let's remember, same-sex adoption is still illegal in some states so I can see why people would be nervous about it. As CBS continues to rollout their extensive TV series of past and present on DVD, we get the seventh of final season of Family Ties. This beloved 80s sitcom was hugely popular in its day and its resonances can still be felt today. While much of the style of the series (and costuming) is inherently dated, the humor and content of the show remain in tact, making this a very enjoyable show to watch.
In this final season, the Keaton family faces some emotional turmoil early on as patriarch Steven (Michael Gross) suffers a heart attack. Matriarch Elyse (Meredith Baxter Birney) must rally and keep the family strong in the 3-part episode “Heartstrings” as Steven undergoes heart surgery. In the latter half of the season, the writers set up the futures for the Keaton children. Spunky Jennifer (Tina Yothers) becomes a hardcore environmentalist. Ditzy Mallory (Justine Bateman) breaks into the fashion world with her designs.

The 80s were a great time for television. Family sitcoms in particular dominated the many channels’ lineups. One such family was the Keatons and they had welcome home in the popular NBC show Family Ties. The program was your typical half hour romp with smart writing and strong performances. The show lasted a respectable seven seasons and for purposes of this review, emphasis shall be placed on the season six DVD.
Family Ties revolves around a pretty typical family in the 1980s. Elyse (Meredith Baxter) and Steven Keaton (Michael Gross) are former hippies who are now married. They have an eclectic group of kids in conservative Alex (Michael J. Fox), ditzy Mallory (Justine Bateman), sarcastic Jennifer (Tina Yothers) and cute as a button youngin Andrew (Brian Bonsall). Every episode focuses on a particular problem and by the end of the episode is usually solved unless it’s a cliffhanger.

Tina Yothers described herself as the everygirl that teens could relate to during her appearance on "What Not to Wear." She was the kid who was a little oveweight, or struggling with acne during her run on "Family Ties." And it was during those formative years on the show that she started to gravitate toward black for her wardrobe. Now, it seems to be all she wears.
Stacy London and Clinton Kelly noticed that she didn't really seem to have a style, unless covering up in large clothing is a style.
"I spent my life, my childhood on television with the stylist and the wardrobe department. I just never grabbed on to any particular look," Yothers admitted.

Throughout Season 10, Stacy and Clinton will makeover more celebrities like Nicole Eggert, Tina Yothers and Shannon Elizabeth.

Tina Yothers’ wigged-out appearance on last night’s Celebrity Wife Swap has set the Internet afire. Her impromptu responses (“there’s a circus under here!”) to Niecy Nash’s attempt to glam her up with spangle pants and fur vests were hilarious, but you may recall that Yothers comes by a wisecrack easily. Three decades ago this year, she played Family Ties’ precociously wry youngest sister Jennifer Keaton. Here are a few of Jennifer’s best comebacks.
Jennifer Keaton: What’s impetuous?
Steven Keaton : Well, uh. That’s when you do something without thinking it through.

The fun part of ABC's new series "Celebrity Wife Swap" is taking the fish out of water and seeing how they do. In Tuesday's (Jan. 17) episode, "Family Ties" star Tina Yothers swapped out with comic Niecy Nash. And the results were probably exactly what producers hoped for.
Yothers, the former teen star, has left entertainment and settled into a simple life on the fringes of suburbia. Nash, on the other hand, is a busy actress and prefers the glamor of Hollywood. But after the swap, they both struggle with their new lives.
While taking in a day at the spa, a clearly uncomfortable Yothers explains, "I'm happy in my flip flops...this whole Hollywood thing and the pampering, it's just not for me." This matter becomes plainly evident when, after her make over, she takes a tumble while wearing high heels.
The always-primped Nash fares about the same, that is to say awkwardly.

It was a case of city celebrity meets country celebrity on "Celebrity Wife Swap" (Tue., 9 p.m. Est on ABC) this week. Niecy Nash brought her self-proclaimed diva personality out to the country where Tina Yothers lived a more relaxed country lifestyle. She was completely out of sorts trying to go camping with the family. While she was willing to try her hand at fishing and eating outdoors, she drew the line at actually sleeping outside. So she called a cab and headed for a hotel.
Yothers was just as overwhelmed in Nash's more glamorous world. "I feel like I have a rat on my head," she said while getting styled with a wig. After a few failed makeover attempts in the wardrobe department, she was fitted with tight jeans and a look that wasn't as outrageous.

This week on "Celebrity Wife Swap" (Tue., 9 p.m. Est on ABC) Flava Flav and Dee Snider flipped their wives, or in Flava's case his fiancee Liz. Suzette Snider, though, clearly didn't get as much out of the experience as she'd been hoping. Her problem was that she felt Flava didn't take the process seriously.
Suzette was immediately concerned that Liz' mother was present in the house and acting more like a parent to the couples' two young children. She is more than disturbed to find that Flava spends so much time out of the house doing his own thing, rather than at home with his family. When he took her out to show her his night life, it did little to convince her of the value of him leaving so often.
The rules switch at Flava's house is a complete disaster as he does his own thing regardless of her intentions.

Question: how many degrees of separation do you need to connect Michael Bolton and Paula Abdul. Answer: only one (and a Skype connection).
It was revealed on last night's (Oct. 10) "Jimmy Kimmel Live" that a young Michael Bolton babysat a young Paula Abdul. Cue the 80s explosion. Apparently, Bolton was friends with Abdul's older sister which meant that someone had to occasionally watchdog the future reality judge. Bolton was mum on a mysterious incident involving a pencil stabbing and a hospital trip, but all is seemingly forgiven as Jimmy Kimmel sat by and facilitated a somewhat awkwardly long lovefest.
They were too young for "When a Man Loves a Woman" or "Opposites Attract," but we're sure it was "Straight Up" adorable. And it ranks number 3 on our fantasy list of 80s babysitter relationship. You want to see the list, you say?
5. Rick James babysits Tina Yothers

In case any of us '80s kids were not glued to 'The Joy Behar Show' (weeknights, 10Pm Et on Hln), here's a clip from her interview with our beloved 'Family Ties' stars (minus Mallory's Justine Bateman and Alex P. Keaton's Michael J. Fox). Michael Gross (father Steven) and Tina Yothers (Jennifer) joined her in the studio, Meredith Baxter (Elyse) and Brian Bonsall (Andy) by satellite.
Joy Behar chose the opportunity to ask a ridiculous hypothetical question to Baxter, who came out in 2009. "What do you think Alex P. Keaton would have thought about you being gay?"

Chicago – Steven and Elyse Keaton were the super-parents of a certain generation. “Family Ties” was the 1980s TV show featuring Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter as the Keatons. As TV parents, they raised Alex (Michael J. Fox), Mallory (Justine Bateman) and Jennifer (Tina Yothers).
The quintessential 1980s sitcom propelled Fox to stardom, and provided Red vs. Blue State discourse before it was cool, as Alex Keaton was a Reaganite conservative and his parents were liberal ex-hippies from the 1960s. Well-written, funny and warm without being sticky, the show was anchored by Gross and Baxter’s chemistry as Steven and Elyse.
Gross and Baxter had their reunion at the Hollywood Celebrities & Memorabilia Show in September of 2010. The show is a biannual event that brings celebrities to Chicago to meet, sign autographs and interact with their admirers. Joe Arce of HollywoodChicago.com was also there to capture the Family Ties reunion in photography.

We’ve seen Dinoshark. Mansquito. Mongolian Death Worm. Next up: Mongolian Mansdinosharkworm? Maybe. It’s up to you loyal SyFy fans. According to the Hollywood Reporter, SyFy will ask fans online to help create a Saturday night telefilm for the network via B Movie Mogul, a production site that will allow viewers to “vote and pitch ideas for the film, from title, creatures, wardrobe, dialogue, and character deaths to promotional taglines.”
Anyone who’s a SyFy movie fan doesn’t need me to tell them how awesome this is. In fact, this news makes me so giddy, I feel like juggling some Mega Piranha.

Like the cancer he is -- itchy rectal -- I think we may have finally found a cure for Seth MacFarlane. He's already pretty much dominated Sundays on Fox with three shows that are like nesting dolls of ass-suck, and now he's gonna go to the big screen. And I'm hoping this element of over-saturation will finally pop him like the festering acne on his fan base.

Many expectant parents already have a nickname in mind when naming their unborn child, but for a growing minority the nickname is the name! Linda Rosenkrantz, co-founder of nameberry.com, points out that celebrities like Tiger Woods, Helena Bonham Carter and Mira Sorvino bypassed the full, formal names of Charles, William and Jonathan when naming their sons Charlie, Billy and Johnny, respectively.
What’s more, Tiger and Denise Richards — both of whom have daughters named Sam — are also using the same nicknames for both boys and girls interchangeably. The using a unisex nickname-as-a-name club may include Ethan Suplee and John C. McGinley (with daughters named Billie), Rebecca Romijn & Jerry O’Connell (with daughter Charlie) and Melissa Etheridge (with daughter Johnnie), “but these are miles away from the unisex nickname names of the 60s and 70s like Corey and Jody,” Linda notes. “Today’s versions are mostly short forms of standard appellations,...

It was almost 20 years ago that Family Ties, one of the most popular sitcoms of the 1980s, said goodbye to NBC. Today, the cast returned to the peacock network for their first on-screen reunion.
Family Ties debuted on September 22, 1982 and centers around the Keaton Family of Columbus, Ohio. Liberal Steven (Michael Gross) and Elyse (Meredith Baxter) are the parents to conservative Alex (Michael J. Fox), underachieving Mallory (Justine Bateman), and tomboy Jennifer (Tina Yothers). During the sitcom's third season, Elyse gave birth to a fourth child, Andrew (played by Brian Bonsall beginning in season five).
The series ended on May 14, 1989 with an hour-long episode entitled "Alex Doesn't Live Here Anymore." It centers around Alex getting a great job on Wall Street and leaving the family home for the first time.
The network wanted the show back for an eighth season but the cast and creator Gary David Goldberg felt...

VH1 is beefing up its unscripted slate, greenlighting an eight-episode series featuring aspiring telenovela stars.
The network also has ordered new installments of "Celebrity Fit Club" and "ego trip's The (White) Rapper Show" -- both of which will feature a twist. "Fit Club"'s sixth season will star former cast members returning to compete with a new group of celebrities, while the follow-up to "Rapper", titled "ego trip's Miss Rap Supreme," will feature a search for the next great female MC.
In the new series "Viva Hollywood!" 12 bilingual Latino and Latina contestants will learn the "7 Deadly Sins of Telenovelas" -- passion, lust, charisma, drama, fire, seduction and scandal -- in order to impress the judges: actress-singer Maria Conchita Alonso and singer-songwriter Carlos Ponce. Astrologer Walter Mercado will give the contestants guidance.
The winner will land a role on a Telemundo telenovela, representation from management company Latin World Entertainment and a $100,000 prize. The hourlong series, from World of Wonder (VH1's "What Perez Sez"), premieres in the spring.
"Fit Club" also is in production for a spring premiere. Returning cast members Tina Yothers, Willie Aames, Toccara and Dustin Diamond comprise one team, while Sommore, Brian Dunkleman, Erin Moran and A.J. Benza comprise the other.
"Rapper"'s MC Serch will return to host "Miss Rap Supreme", which just wrapped production and also is set for spring. Female rapper Yo Yo is set to co-host.
Brian Graden, president of entertainment at MTV Networks Music Group, is hoping to continue building on the success VH1 has seen with such unscripted series as "Flavor of Love" and its spinoff "I Love New York", "Rock of Love With Bret Michaels," "The Surreal Life", "My Fair Brady", "The Salt-N-Pepa Show" and "Hogan Knows Best". He noted that VH1 is on track for 22 consecutive quarters of growth among total viewers.
