You may know Dungeons & Dragons, the venerable role playing game, turned 40 recently. Our own Chris Ullrich even did a post about it over at his personal site. Turns out, D&D is still pretty much as popular as it ever was and people from all walks of life enjoy it. But that wasn’t always […]

A wiser man would have not waited to start his laundry at 9 Pm on the night before he had to drive the accursed I-5, but Lord knows I've never been that bright. So at 5 Am, I hopped in my Jetta and cruised down to San Diego. I left at this goddamned hour because usually the two hour journey is fraught with the traffic of the morning commuters plus the onslaught of nerdlingers coming to Comic-Con. Somehow, I managed to make it to San Diego by 7 Am. But my first stop wasn't the hotel or the convention center. It was a mall movie theater, to see an advanced screening of Captain America.
Like kudzu, San Diego Comic-Con has spread voraciously over the face of San Diego. Not just content to remain in the Convention Center, events have now spread to the surrounding hotel ballrooms and meeting rooms. But beyond that, the...

We’ve been bringing you brand new clips from the upcoming Solomon Kane as of late, including a thrilling scene from the Hall of Mirrors. Recently, a new clip has been posted in which Solomon’s faithful friend, William Crowthorn, and his family are captured by the riders in the forest.
The film follows the travels of Solomon Kane, a priest-turned-renegade priest who swears his duties to fighting all things spooky and evil. The interesting part of that plot is that Solomon doesn’t always use his sword to do his talking. Being a priest, he tries to go the way of the peaceful man before turning to violence. An interesting twist on the Medieval Action Adventure film.
While there’s still no word on when the wide Us release will be, France and Russia get to see the film in two weeks, and our very own Chris Ullrich saw...

One of our own Chris Ullrich’s favorite films this year, Solomon Kane, has apparently been acquired for U.S. distribution by Lionsgate, a studio known for supporting genre and independent movies. According to Fangoria, who broke the news, there are rumblings that the film may even get a theatrical run prior to a DVD release.
Horror aficionados might be familiar with director Michael J. Bassett, who previously directed Deathwatch (2002) and Wilderness (2006). Soloman Kane is a character originally created by pulp fiction author Robert E. Howard, of Conan the Barbarian fame. Stories about the character appeared in Weird Tales magazine in the 1920’s.
James Purefoy stars as the title character, who roams the earth trying to wipe out evil after the devil acquires his soul and he has a change of heart about his evil ways. The movie also stars prolific actor Max Von Sydow (Flash Gordon, Dune, The Tudors...

Last night at a special event sponsored by Activision and Infinity Ward, our own Chris Ullrich got a chance to take a look at the new multi-player features of the upcoming game Modern Warfare 2. Check back later for all the scoop on that and on the game itself. In the meantime, another cool piece of news was made public last night that is sure to please hard-core fans of the Call of Duty franchise and those of you who need a cool new console to play your games on.
Microsoft’s own Major Nelson made the announcement last night that there would be an exclusive global XBox 360 console based on Activision and Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2 game. Not only that, this console would have unique styling elements and feature a 250 Gb hard drive, which is more storage than any other XBox 360. Interested? Of course you are. Here’s all...

Writer and producer Jane Espenson has written, or co-written, episodes of some of the most popular and successful TV shows in recent memory. Getting her start on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Espenson also worked on hugely popular shows such as Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, Angel, and one of the most celebrated series ever on TV, Battlestar Galactica.
More recently, Espenson has written for Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse, wrote the BSG TV movie The Plan and she is now Executive Producer on the upcoming BSG prequel series Caprica. Recently, I had an opportunity to talk with Espenson about, among other things, The Plan, Caprica, Dollhouse budget cuts and the move to the internet from traditional media.
Chris Ullrich: What can you tell us about The Plan? It supposedly shows Battlestar Galactica entirely from the Cylon perspective, correct?
Jane Espenson: Technically, that’s correct, but perhaps misleading. It...

The funny thing about being the editor of Splash Page is that it’s not the sort of job you leave at the office — and usually, that’s okay by me. When I’m not writing about comic books and comic book movies or otherwise managing the stories you come here for every day, I’m talking to people about comics over lunch, on the subway, over drinks or as happened to be the case this week, as the special guest on The Flickcast audio podcast.
The Flickcast crew invited me to join them this week in their regular discussion of comics, gaming, movies and related geekery, and while I was happy to share some thoughts (okay, a lot of thoughts — I tend to ramble), I’m starting to think that voicing my love for the 2005 “Man-Thing” movie might not have been the best career move.

Last week on The Flickcast, our own Chris Ullrich chose Rob Zombie’s Halloween reboot as his pick of the week. He was impressed with the film and found it to be much better than he expected. Obviously, he’s a fan.
Well, he’s in luck then, as are the rest of you who are fans of Rob Zombie and Halloween, because Zombie is hard at work on a sequel, currently entitled Halloween 2. And now, courtesy of the folks over at Club Scout and a rather shaky person with a camcorder aimed at their tv screen, we’ve got two new video clips of Halloween 2 tv spots to share with you.
These two video clips show Zombie’s vision at work bringing new dimensions to the horror that is Michael Myers. Expect more of the same: Michael Myers chasing people, killing people, people trying to kill him...

Man, we are so behind... busy busy busy here. Some items from the past few days to tide you over:
The "comics on handhelds" panel at SXSW, covered by ComicMix contributor Chris Ullrich for one of the thirteen other blogs he writes for.
And speaking of ComicMix contributors past and present, Rick Marshall made it up to the Webcomics Weekend and covered it heavily.
Quote of the day, from John Rogers:
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.
Take the above with a grain of salt-- Rogers drinks. Heavily. And who can blame him?
Of course, if you want your own quote,...
