After swiftly scrapping planned summer drama series Weird Desk last month, ABC has picked up another original drama for next summer, Canadian import Motive, from former Dexter and The Mentalist exec producer Daniel Cerone. The 13-episode CTV series focuses not on who did the crime, but why the crime was committed in the first place. The killer and victim are identified at the beginning of each episode, with the crime then explored via stylized flashbacks which piece together the connection between the two characters and what drove the killer to commit murder. In Canada, the series will premiere in the coveted post-Super Bowl slot this Sunday. Motive stars Kristin Lehman (The Killing), Louis Ferreira (Rookie Blue), Lauren Holly (NCIS), Roger Cross (Arrow), Brendan Penny and Cameron Bright. The series was created by Cerone who executive produces with Louise Clark, Rob Merilees, Erin Haskett, Rob Labelle, Lindsay Macadam and James Thorpe.

The Entitled is a film of tough times e.g. recession, medical expenses. Kevin Zegers plays Paul, a man driven to desperate measures when his mom needs expensive medication. Unable to find a job, Paul recruits two of his friends to kidnap three socialites, The Entitled. This title recently released on DVD and Blu-Ray and one of the first reviews is in. EDINBURGH, Scotland -- The "Stone of Destiny" in Charles Martin Smith's pedestrian new film is the macguffin that a group of Scottish nationalists plan to repatriate from the heart of England in order to encourage the movement for Scotland's independence.
Shrouded in myth and also known as the Coronation Stone, it's a slab of rock taken from Scotland by an English king 1000 years ago and kept for ages at Westminster Abbey. The film is based on a true incident in 1950 when some students from Glasgow broke into the Abbey and stole it.
Intended as a rousing feel-good tale of rebellion, the film suffers from slack direction and bland performances with very little tension and no surprises. Box office prospects are slim beyond what can be drummed up from the worldwide Scottish community but it's not going to cause many to spill their whisky.
Based on a book by central character Ian Hamilton (Charles Cox), "Stone of Destiny" relates in some awe what is obviously meant to be the daredevil escapade of an idealistic young man who relishes the opportunity of making a name for himself.
Although his best mate (Billy Boyd) decides not to put his education and future employment at risk, Ian recruits two other young men (Stephen McCole and Ciaron Kelly) and a pretty young woman named Kay (Kate Mara) with no arm-twisting at all.
With financial backing from a prominent educator and politician (Robert Carlyle), they set off to London to scout the layout of Westminster Abbey and plan their raid. Curiously, the presence of four young Scottish people in London arouses a great deal of suspicion as if everyone knows what they're up to. It stretches credibility and so do the foursome's contrived antics during the raid, which involve missed signals, dropped keys and lots of running about in the rain.
Veterans Carlyle, Mullan and Flicker have cameos but the film rests on the youngsters, especially Cox and Mara, who do their best but cannot enliven the dull script. By sticking reasonably close to the actual events, the film has to reach for its heroes' small victories but they're not enough to make the picture memorable.
Production: Infinity Features Entertainment and the Mob Film Company. Cast: Charlie Cox, Kate Mara, Stephen McCole, Ciaron Kelly, Billy Boyd, Robert Carlyle, Peter Mullan, Brenda Flicker. Director: Charles Martin Smith. Screenwriter: Charles Martin Smith. Producers: Andrew Boswell, Rob Merilees. Executive producers: Terrence Yason, Michael S.

Sundance Film Festival
PARK CITY -- Oscar-winner Charlize Theron performs double duty as both actress and producer on Sleepwalking, which had its premiere at Sundance before opening in March. Actually, her own role is just a supporting turn, but she brings force and integrity to her acting and also to her work behind the camera. Although the story is too grim to attract a large audience, all the performances deserve accolades.
Theron, who seems equally comfortable inhabiting glamorous roles in Hollywood ventures like The Italian Job and grungier types in her indie films, plays Joleen Reedy, an irresponsible single mother who has had a lot of bad luck with men. After her latest boyfriend is arrested, she takes her daughter, Tara (AnnaSophia Robb), and moves in with her brother, James (Nick Stahl). She soon meets another man and runs off with him, leaving James to look after Tara. James, a good-hearted but simple man, wants to give his niece a home, though he is ill-equipped for the task. Eventually they end up with his own abusive father (Dennis Hopper), the source of all the family's problems.
The script by Zac Stanford (The Chumscrubber) takes an unblinking look at the travails of working-class people and hopelessly damaged families. While there are moments of humor provided by supporting players like Woody Harrelson (as James' co-worker), most of the movie is pretty bleak. Yet the fine acting keeps us hypnotized. As she showed in Monster, Theron is perfectly willing to dispense with vanity and offer a hard-edged portrayal of a selfish, reckless woman.
Stahl has often been the best thing in very mediocre movies. In this case, he has one of his stronger roles, and he finds the pathos and decency in a deeply wounded man. Hopper is suitably monstrous as the brutish paterfamilias.
The movie's real find is young Robb, who has shown charm in such movies as "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and Bridge to Terabithia, and who reaches a whole new level of maturity in Sleepwalking. Growing up in a messy family situation, Tara has had to develop a wisdom way beyond her years. Robb makes her credibly tough while retaining tinges of heartbreaking vulnerability. This is a breakthrough performance that should do wonders for her career.
First-time director William Maher brings a strong sense of authenticity to the film. Working on a low budget with veteran cinematographer Juan Ruiz-Anchia, Maher makes the most of the desolate Western locations. (The film actually was shot in Saskatchewan, doubling for California and Utah.) The film winds predictably toward its melancholy conclusion, but there is a glimmer of hope for at least a couple of the characters. Even if the movie takes you to some dark places you would rather not visit, at least you will remember the actors who navigate the tortured journey.
