Considering we share the same rare first name, I’ve always had a strong affinity with Redmond Barry. His epic travails across Europe – lovingly, beautifully, cynically portrayed in Stanley Kubrick’s once-underrated, now-reappraised classic Barry Lyndon – carry the sweep of history while never losing its romantic core. Like most Stanley Kubrick projects, the behind-the-scenes antics, including a potential threat from the Ira, are legendary – they also prove fertile ground for a metafictional exploration of the life of a below-the-line film crew falling in and out of love across the Irish countryside. With Kubrick By Candelight, location-manager-turned-director (and Stanley Kubrick superfan) David O’Reilly weaves a delicate romantic metafictional comedy that functions both as a tribute to the legendary filmmaker’s unique cinematic vision and as a delightful short in its own right. We had the chance to talk to O’Reilly about recreating Kubrick’s cinematic techniques, being inspired by countless days...

VFX house behind Kick-Ass 2 working on upcoming sci fi project Robot Overlords.
London visual effects firm Nvizible is to expand with the launch of Nvizible Belfast. As part of this expansion, former head of production Kris Wright has been promoted to managing director with Nic Hatch taking on the role of chairman.
Hatch has been credited as the driving force behind the Belfast move and “recognised it as an area of growth in the film industry with a shortage of VFX”.
Wright said: “In tandem with this growth of VFX in Belfast we are going to nurture a talent pool of local artists to work on these shows. This is something young, aspiring VFX artists in Northern Ireland have never had the chance to do before.”
Victoria Farley will head up the studio in Belfast, which is already working on Robot Overlords, an Embankment Films production that is also being handled by the London office. The facilities...

Interview Sarah Dobbs Jan 15, 2013
With the Irish sci-fi comedy Grabbers out on DVD and Blu-ray now, Sarah caught up with writer Kevin Lehane to chat about its making...
Seen Grabbers yet? The Irish monster movie captured our hearts last year, and we’ve been singing its praises ever since. Now that it’s out on DVD (and Blu-ray), we decided it was time we stopped tweeting at writer Kevin Lehane and actually picked up the phone to talk to him about the film.
If you haven’t seen the film yet, there might be some mild spoilers contained in this interview, so if you’re intending to see it, you may want to bookmark this and come back later. If you have seen it, or if you're just cavalier about spoilers, though, read on. It’s pretty fascinating to hear about how things changed between Kevin’s original script and the finished movie,...

Interview Sarah Dobbs Dec 20, 2012
With Irish alien invasion movie Grabbers out next week, Sarah spoke to director Jon Wright about its making, and what he's up to next...
Grabbers is the kind of film you want to tell people about. It’s an alien invasion movie with a twist: the aliens are deathly allergic to alcohol, so when they attempt to invade a small Irish island, the locals realise the only way to survive is to get wasted. It’s a fun movie with a surprisingly large heart, by turns scary, funny, gory, and adorable, and as soon as you’ve seen it you’ll want to make sure all your friends have, too.
We caught up with director Jon Wright ahead of the film’s UK release. And given the film’s subject matter, we decided the best place to conduct our interview was in a pub, over a couple of beers…...
