When it comes to chronicling the bravery of the Greatest Generation during World War II, few if any can claim to have done it better than Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.
The Oscar-winning duo – whose first project about the Second World War, “Saving Private Ryan,” won Spielberg his second Best Director Oscar and landed Hanks a nomination for Best Actor. They have spent decades cataloging the sacrifice of American soldiers during WWII across multiple acclaimed television projects, including “Band of Brothers” (focused on Army paratroopers) and “The Pacific” (focused on Marines).
This year, Spielberg and Hanks are back again with “Masters of the Air,” the Apple TV+ limited series about the 100th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force (also known as the Bloody Hundredth) who flew deadly and dangerous missions over Germany during World War II. With its pedigree – both “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific” won Emmy Awards for best miniseries,...

On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig stationed off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico caught on fire, leading to one of the worst ecological disasters and oil spills in U.S. waters. 11 men died during the fire, but a lot more survived as they tried to stop the spill before being evacuated.
Following their collaboration on 2013’s Lone Survivor, Mark Wahlberg and director Pete Berg have re-teamed for Deepwater Horizon, a recreation of the hours leading up to the fire and how engineer Mike Williams (played by Wahlberg) made sure that as much of his crew got off the rig safely as he could. Besides being an amazing recreation of the actual fire, the film also deals with some of the reasons why things might have gone wrong as Williams and the rig’s offshore installation manager “Mr. Jimmy” Harrell (Kurt Russell) butt heads with visiting Bp execs.

"Basically, there are a few early concepts of the “Bdc” (Brightwood Data Center) - the lab set up by Johnny Depp’s character “Will Caster”, who is at the forefront in the development of sentient computers. It’s a lab set in the near future that utilizes some very forward thinking technology (not to give any spoilers away). There is also the “Pinn Computer Core” - which was a quantum computer core developed by Caster in order to create the foundation for a sentient computer system that could become self-aware. As well, I’ve included some early concepts for the small town of “Brightwood”, where “Evelyn Caster” (Rebecca Hall) has set up shop in order to carry out her husband’s work. I had a great time working with Production Designer Chris Seagers and Director Wally Pfister, who's vision for the film was a blur between the seductive, bright, shiny...

Check out the new IMAX trailer for Transcendence starring Johnny Depp, Paul Bettany, Rebecca Hall, Kate Mara, Cillian Murphy, Clifton Collins, Jr., and Morgan Freeman.
Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions.
His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him.
However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should.
Their worst fears are realized as Will’s...

When X-Men Origins: Wolverine hit our screens back in 2009, we all felt the beloved X-Men franchise had taken a horrible turn for the worse. It’s true perhaps the downfall began with X-Men 3: The Last Stand but particularly by The Wolverine the saga was beginning to show it’s age and was no longer feeling very imaginative or as smart as Bryan Singer envisioned when he first translated these cerebral comics for the big screen.
Origins had strayed too far away from what was established before in previous films and the comic book source material. It’s cinematic crimes are too numerous to mention but thankfully with X-Men: First Class’s new setting and prequel approach, the franchise has been give an entire new lease of life and the latest installment may be one of the best in the series.

Sometimes I really hate reviewing movies. Of course that’s not saying I’m trying to bite the hand that feeds me, just that there are times when you have the privilege to watch something before anyone else and you just want to sit back and enjoy – to forget the note-taking, the analysis, trying to keep yourself one step removed from complete fan-boy abandonment. Admittedly when it comes to genre movie-making, and in particular our current love affair with comic book movies it’s usually more difficult. What can I say, I’m a fan. Which of course makes poorly made comic book movies all the more disappointing, all the more crushing after all the expectation.
With X-Men: First Class, Marvel’s 60’s set re-invigoration of the X-universe after the less than stellar X-Men 3: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, I hardly even bothered...

The release of the Matthew Vaughn directed, X-Men: First Class starring James McAvoy, Kevin Bacon, Caleb Landry Jones, Lucas Till, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Jason Flemyng, January Jones, Zoë Kravitz, Michael Fassbender, Oliver Platt and Ray Wise is now just weeks away.
If you’re wondering how well they have done, recreating that 1960′s vibe for the movie, look no further than the photos below from Architectural Digest (of all places). Apparently production designer Chris Seagers‘ designs were so good they ended up in the prestigious magazine

Part three arrives and it comes with 20 more films to keep an eye on this year as potential Oscar candidates. If you missed parts one and two, the links for both of those can be found on the bottom of page two of this post.
With today's list of films it brings the total previewed thus far to 60 early Oscar contending films and already one reader has sent in a potential new candidate I am looking into further to see if the list again will grow from it's current total of 73 films to 74 and what may amount to a fifth film for Helen Mirren. With no films this year for Meryl Streep, it looks like Mirren is stacking the deck.
I will again remind you, this is merely a guide to potential nominees, not a guarantee, not a lock, but simply films that could potentially go on to be remembered at the year-end Oscar race.
