Westerns always have a welcome, distinctive flavor when they emerge from Australia, and The Legend of Ben Hall looks to be no exception, at least judging from our exclusive clip. Ben Hall has been on the run, and in the clip he arrives to reclaim his young son from the boy's mother. It's a situation that's filled with tension and anger, yet also one that's uncomfortably understandable for anyone who's suffered estrangement from a formerly beloved partner. Here is the official synopsis: After two years on the run, bushranger Ben Hall considers surrendering to the law when his old friend John Gilbert entices him back into the game. Taking on fresh recruit John Dunn, the gang rides again, and before long they become the most...

This year's Oscars ceremony went off alright, but not without a hitch (or two).
During the In Memoriam section, a photo of Australian producer Jan Chapman (Love Serenade, Lantana, The Babadook) was shown next to the name of late costume designer Janet Patterson, with whom Chapman worked on several Jane Campion films including The Piano, Bright Star and Holy Smoke..
Patterson died in October last year. Her final film was Thomas Vinterberg's adaptation of Far From the Madding Crowd, starring Carey Mulligan and Matthias Schoenaerts..
.I was devastated by the use of my image in place of my great friend and long-time collaborator Janet Patterson," the still-very-much-breathing Chapman told Variety..
"I had urged her agency to check any photograph which might be used and understand that they were told that the Academy had it covered.

In one of the biggest shocks in Academy Awards history, the final award of the night, Best Picture, was mistakenly announced.
Moonlight won best picture at the 89th Oscars after La La Land was erroneously reported announced as the winner.
Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway read La La Land right after Emma Stone won best actress for her role in the modern-day musical. After the cast took the stage, a producer for La La Land corrected things and said, “[Actually] ‘Moonlight’ is the winner … this is not a joke.”
The La Times exclusively spoke to best picture presenter Warren Beatty backstage after the history-making mistake that briefly awarded La La Land the honor instead of rightful winner Moonlight and the legendary director explained what happened onstage.
“I looked down at the card and thought, ‘This is very strange, because it says best actress.’ Maybe there was a misprint. I don’t know what happened.

In a shock finale to Sunday’s 89th Academy Awards, the drama was named best picture moments after La La Land had been declared the winner in error.Read: Oscars 2017: Full list of winners
Faye Dunaway had announced the musical as the winner at the Dolby Theatre after co-presenter Warren Beatty, who opened the envelope and appeared lost for words, handed it to his Bonnie And Clyde co-star.
As chaos reigned, Beatty walked up to the microphone and explained the envelope read, “Emma Stone, La La Land”.
The actress had already received her best actress Oscar in one of the key awards of the night alongside Casey Affleck’s triumph in the best actor category for Manchester By The Sea.
La La Land won six Oscars on the night led by Stone and Damien Chazelle, who became the youngest person to win the best directing Oscar. The film started the night on a joint-record 14 nominations.

Update:
Winners are now indicated. I correctly guessed 11 out of the 24 categories, which is slightly better than last year, when I guessed 10 out of 24.
Previous 02.26.17:
I’ve now seen as many of the nominated films as I will be able to before tonight’s ceremony, and here finally are my educated guesses about who will take home each award — projected winners are Xed at the lefthand side. Keep in mind: those Xes don’t represent whom I think should win Oscars but whom I think will win, based on what little I can grasp about how the Academy thinks. I’ve also noted which nominees I think should win. Kindly note that this is not necessarily my take on who did the best performance/writing/FX/whatever of the year, but whom I think is best among the nominees.

“La La Land,” as expected, dominated the Oscar crafts, with Damien Chazelle’s musical valentine taking four awards for cinematography, production design, score, and original song. Still, it was predicted to win at least three more.
And it was a great night for Disney and its trio of winners: the zeitgeist-grabbing “Zootopia” (animated feature), Disney Animation’s third Oscar in four years, which trumpeted tolerance ahead of the Presidential election; Alan Barillaro’s fine-feathered “Piper” (animated short), Pixar’s R&D sculpting project that ended its 15-year shorts drought; and Jon Favreau’s “The Jungle Book” (VFX), which innovated photographic-based realism. The award was shared by production VFX supervisor Rob Legato, Mpc’s VFX supervisor Adam Valdez, Weta Digital’s VFX supervisor Dan Lemmon, and Andrew R. Jones, the animation supervisor.

Mel Gibson’s career resurgence was solidified at the 2017 Academy Awards on Sunday night when his film “Hacksaw Ridge” surprised with multiple victories, including an upset win for film editing. Gibson received a few shots at the ceremony for his personal troubles, but “Hacksaw Ridge” editor John Gilbert had nothing but kind words for the director. “A public persona of someone, the picture is almost never true,” Gilbert told reporters backstage at the Dolby Theatre when asked whether working with Gibson was as he expected going in. “He’s just a warm, genuine kind of guy. Sunday’s 89th Academy Awards are underway at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney took to the stage at the Dolby Theatre in a popular adapted screenplay win for Moonlight as the drama earned its second win of the night.
Moments earlier Kenneth Lonergan accepted the original screenplay award for Manchester By The Sea in the film’s first prize. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon – winners of this award for Good Will Hunting 19 years ago – presented the honour to Lonergan. Damon was a producer on the film.
Meryl Streep used her Oscar show platform to pay subtle homage to the unifying power of film when she joined Javier Bardem on stage at the Dolby Theatre to present the cinematography award.
“Truth is hard to reveal,” Streep said, “but when it happens on the movie screen filmgoers no matter where they are from, feel their hearts soar.”

You’d think that the Oscar race for Best Editing would be very much in play. After all, “Arrival” and “La La Land” took the Ace Awards for drama and comedy, respectively, while “Hacksaw Ridge” won the BAFTA.
But given the audacity of Best Picture frontrunner “La La Land” and the fact that editor Tom Cross previously won the Oscar for Damien Chazelle’s “Whiplash,” the odds are with him again.
Still, with such a strong group of nominees, the craft awards could break unexpectedly. Each editor explores existential crises in different ways and creatively plays with time and space.
Here’s how the race is shaking out.
“La La Land”
With the bittersweet love story between Ryan Gosling’s Sebastian and Emma Stone’s Mia, Chazelle constructed a musical bridge between the past and the present — Hollywood as both dreamland and boulevard of broken dreams. It’s filled with flashbacks and fantasy sequences,...

The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are in and La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations! I knew La La Land was going to explode at this event, and it's probably going to end up taking home many of the awards is was nominated for. The 14 nominations ties the record with 1997's Titanic and 1950's All About Eve.
Arrival ended up with eight nominations as did Moonlight, while Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, and Manchester by the Sea all got six. Deadpool ended up with zero nominations. I was hoping to see it somewhere on the list, but it looks like all that hype didn't work.
Every film and actor who was nominated for their work deserves to be on this list, so congratulations to them all! There are so many great films and actors to root for, but there can be only one winner in each category.

When Thelma Schoonmaker won the first of her three Academy Awards for “Raging Bull,” she humbly told journalists that she believed she was being honored for work done by the director, Martin Scorsese.
“I won the Oscar for ‘Raging Bull’ for those fight sequences,” said Schoonmaker in a 1991 interview with Wide Angle/Closeup. “If you look at those fight sequences, those were so incredibly storyboarded and shot in an incredible way – that is the conception a good director has to bring.”

The editors are often credited with picking the eventual Oscar-winner. So let’s assume that this year’s top four rivals, “Arrival,” “La La Land,” “Manchester By the Sea” and “Moonlight,” will land nods, along with war movie “Hacksaw Ridge.”
On the other hand, perhaps tellingly, Oscar hopefuls “20th Century Women,” “Jackie,” “Fences,” “Lion,” “Loving,” and “Hidden Figures” did not land drama or comedy editing nods from the American Cinema Editors, which leaves them on the cusp for Best Picture.
Frontrunners
Tom Cross (“La La Land”)
John Gilbert (“Hacksaw Ridge”)
Joe Walker (“Arrival”)
Joi McMillon, Nat Sanders (“Moonlight”)
Jennifer Lame (“Manchester by the Sea”)
Contenders
Julian Clarke (“Deadpool”)
Roderick Jaynes (“Hail, Caesar!”)
Mark Livolsi (“The Jungle Book”)
Yorgos Mavropsaridis (“The Lobster”)

The months leading up to Star Wars: Rogue One's release were full not just of geeky anticipation, but a certain amount of nervousness. Nervousness on account of one, oft-shared word that can either mean everything or nothing: 'reshoots'.
You're perfectly aware, we're sure, that reshoots are standard part of making a movie: once principal photography's over, it isn't uncommon for certain gaps to appear in the edit, so a cast and crew will head back out and capture the bits they need to fill in the blanks. The 2016 Critics’ Choice Awards nominations are in and, somewhat unsurprisingly, Damien Chazelle’s old-timey musical La La Land has emerged as an early frontrunner.
It bagged 12 nominations in total, including nods in some of the more prestigious categories – Best Picture, Ryan Gosling for Best Actor, Emma Stone for Best Actress, Chazelle for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. It’s an impressive haul for the Oscar-tipped drama, and one that will surely strengthen its status as the one candidate to beat as the weeks wear on.
Elsewhere, other films to score big in the list of nominations include acclaimed sci-fi Arrival and Fences, Denzel Washington’s adaptation that sees him in the role of a former baseball star struggling to find meaning in 1950s Pittsburgh.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association (of which I'm a proud member) has revealed the nominations for the 22nd Critics' Choice Awards! And I'm loving that my favorite film of the year, "La La Land," led the pack with 12 nominations including Best Picture. "Moonlight" and "Arrival" followed with 10 noms each. The three films will compete with "Fences," "Hacksaw Ridge," "Hell or High Water," "Lion," "Loving," "Manchester by the Sea," and "Sully" for the Best Picture trophy. Winners will be announced live on A&E on Sunday, December 11th and I will be there!
Before I give you the nominations, how cool is it that August Wilson, who wrote the play "Fences" that Denzel Washington faithfully adapted, received a Best Adapted Screenplay nod? The best part? The great playwright has been gone for 11 years! Kudos to Washington for handling Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece with love!

Hacksaw Ridge cast and crew in Venice.
Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge, shot in Sydney last year, has debuted at the Venice Film Festival to (mostly) raves.
Gibson has "absolutely hit Hacksaw Ridge out of the park", said The Guardian in a four-star review. "As a machine-tooled vehicle for Mel Gibson's directorial comeback, Hacksaw Ridge couldn't be more perfect."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Gibson's forceful comeback is a violent drama about pacifism that succeeds in combining horror with grace", while The Telegraph called it "fantastically moving".
Variety described the film "an act of atonement that may succeed in bringing Gibson back" as well as "a testament to his filmmaking chops".
The pundits uniformly singled out the gruesomeness of the film's battle-heavy second half, as well as the skill with which Gibson presents it - "the battle scenes in Hacksaw Ridge make the opening scene in Saving Private Ryan...
