Netflix has hired Jordan Moblo to be Director of Literary Scouting. He will be based in Los Angeles and will oversee book and IP scouting for Netflix, reporting to Brian Pearson, VP of Creative Services. While Netflix has been a dominant force in acquiring finished films and ready to shoot packages for films and series, the move signals an effort to bolster the effort to grow projects from the ground up.
Moblo has been the Director of Creative Acquisitions Walt Disney Television and co-head of
the Creative Acquisitions Department. That group had just been created to be more competitive in the intellectual property marketplace. Moblo previously was Director of Creative Acquisitions for 20th Television, a position created for him after he identified the opportunity in books and other IP. He chased everything from books to podcasts, articles, formats, life rights and theatre rights. That led to the acquisition of over 100 properties.

Tahar Rahim will play French serial killer Charles Sobhraj in the BBC drama “The Serpent,” which Netflix is boarding as a co-producer. The streaming giant will play it in the U.S. and around the world.
Rahim (“The Looming Tower”) will star as conman and mass murderer Sobhraj, who was discovered and trailed by a young diplomat in mid-1970s Southeast Asia and who escaped prison more than once.
The eight-part series is written by Richard Warlow (“Ripper Street”) and based on the true story of how the elusive Sobhraj was caught and brought to trial. The drama follows a junior diplomat from the Dutch Embassy in Bangkok as he unwittingly walks into the web of crime that leads him to chase down the murderer in the twilight years of the Asian Hippie Trail.

I am a fan of the Insidious series. The more horror movies I see, the more the the first two stand out in my head for being completely their own thing. They are movies willing to take chances and go 100% full on bonkers, and the fact that they are written by Leigh Whannell and directed by James Wan means they are expertly made on a technical level while still threatening to go completely off the rails in the best way. While Wan's The Conjuring is a very classical and well-made haunted house movie and probably going to become an all-timer, it's the Insidious movies I keep coming back to again and again. As studio horror goes, they're the best game in town.
Now here's Insidious Chapter 3, a prequel to the first two movies and the first in the series to be written and directed by Whannell -- his first time behind the camera.

What do you get when you combine sharks and a tornado, and then remove the sharks? You get Into the Storm, an upcoming disaster movie that is curiously free of man-eating fish, fish-eating octopi, octopi-eating megalodons, or any recognizable actors. The result is a pretty generic-looking movie that seems aimed primarily at the kind of people who watch The Weather Channel hoping to see someone swept out to sea.
Here’s the official line on the film from its press release:

Jen and Sylvia Soska (aka the Twisted Twins) broke out onto the scene a few years back with their Grindhouse/Exploitation homage, Dead Hooker In A Trunk. With that film, the Canadian duo proved that they could make an entertaining movie on a small budget, and that violence, gore, and sick humor are not only something that the boys can play with. That being said, the Soskas’ follow up feature, American Mary, manages to reinforce that notion, while also showing that the pair are more than just one trick ponies.
American Mary tells the story of Mary Mason (played by Katharine Isabelle), a medical student who is aspiring to someday become a surgeon. Her professors say that she has the talent, but that she also lacks focus in her studies; probably due to her financial troubles. In order to try and get herself out of debt, Mary begins searching the classifieds,...

It’s no secret that college kids have to struggle to get by. Between buying textbooks, meals, rent, and balancing their studies with a part-time job, it’s astonishing that more students don’t completely lose their minds out of pure exhaustion or frustration. As we have seen and heard before: desperate times call for desperate measures. However, what are you willing to do to reach financial success?
American Mary, the new film from the Canadian indie darlings the Soska Sisters (Dead Hooker in a Trunk), introduces us to our title character who is approaching the edge herself. Mary (Katharine Isabelle) struggles to make ends meet as she is balancing the demands of medical school while being stretched thin financially due to a sick family member and the high cost of education these days; a theme that seems far too common in today’s economy. To earn a little cash under the table,...

A few years ago, some friends and I were sitting around (surprise no. 1) complaining about the cowardice shown in mainstream cinema. It’s something that lots of Monday morning film quarterbacks like to do, and like lots of genre fans, we always steer the conversation to make our beloved little corner of film look good. This day in particular we were bitching about how Hollywood wusses out when they title their movies. Can anyone tell me what a film called “Sweet Home Alabama” is really about? Or what subtle nuances will something called “Head Over Heals” bring to an audience?
The talk swung back to horror where we started listed off how great our titles are. Let’s face it, nothing beats the power of titles like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre or I Spit On Your Grave. These titles, simply put, say something. We began...

Far be it for me to begrudge My Blood Valentine 3D its participatory sense of fun. Even though the movie feels like one long in-joke for genre enthusiasts, a sleepy ’80s slasher movie by way of William Castle, it gleefully calls out to an audience willing to burn $15 for a premium ticket to revel in the flying eyeballs, extravagant nudity and pickaxed brains that supposedly elevate this routine small-town splatter machine into a unique experience.
