Call it the J.J. Effect. Animatronics — along with similar techniques like puppetry, makeup effects and miniatures — is making a comeback.
The work was long responsible for some of the most iconic characters and scenes in cinema history, then shunted aside in the 1990s as CGI became cheaper and delivered ever more realistic results. But J.J. Abrams, a director who’d grown up in the effects heyday of the ’70s and ’80s, followed his love of those arts and the cinematic language of “Star Wars” when he included a wide range of animatronics in 2015’s “The Force Awakens.” Now, Hollywood is rediscovering its love of puppets controlled by motors, gears and cables, whether via the expansion of the “Star Wars” universe or in movies like Netflix’s “Dark Crystal” reboot, “Age of Resistance.”
Film fans of a certain age (which include many of today’s directors) never fell out of love with so-called practical effects.

Some fans have taken umbrage with the level of ‘spoilery’ announcements made about this season of Doctor Who. While others reacted with excitement when, say, it was revealed that the original Cybermen would be returning to the show, a lot of people would have preferred to find this out during the episode itself. The same goes for John Simm’s long-awaited comeback as the Master. As if to make up for spoiling his return, however, there was another layer to his re-appearance that was still able to shock some fans.
In last week’s outing, “World Enough and Time,” Bill befriends strange, quirky hospital orderly Mr. Razor, who seems to be the episode’s comic relief character. As things progress, though, he actually leads her into being – shock horror! – converted into a Cyberman and it turns out that he’s really John Simm’s Master in disguise.

It may be new, but Tribeca Film’s The Demon’s Rook looks like a lost flick from the midnight horror heyday of the 1980’s, when you could watch practical effects ooze from the tube late into the night. With The Demon’s Rook now available on VOD platforms, we’ve been provided with exclusive artwork, along with behind-the-scenes photos from the old school-styled, practical effects-laden creature feature.

Steven Moffat chats to us about the upcoming 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who, The Day Of The Doctor...
Earlier this year, before we knew Matt Smith was leaving and that John Hurt was popping into the world of Doctor Who, we were lucky enough to visit the set of The Day Of The Doctor. While we were there, we took part in a round table interview, with the likes of SFX, Gay Times and The Guardian, and got to spend the best part of half an hour with Steven Moffat.
Here's how the chat went...
Have you had this story in your head for a while...
... for 50 years, I started early! No, I knew it was coming, knew it was going to happen. And when it was the next thing to come over the hill, I started thinking 'what are we going to do now'?...

In adapting Neil Gordon's novel about members of the Weather Underground still on the lam decades later for their violent actions, director Robert Redford and screenwriter Lem Dobbs ("The Limey") could have tackled big ideas about dissent and protest, honed a character study about aging radicals and the young journalist chasing after them, or even dug into Redford's past as the star of "All the President's Men" and "Three Days of the Condor" and crafted a gripping thriller. Option four was apparently to make a dull and uninvolving drama that flirts...

Another day, another batch of ooey, gooey shorts to bring you guys from the New York City Horror Film Festival! Have no worries, because the quality was still on kick-ass display, showcasing some bright up and coming horror talent. There’s really no point in wasting time writing an introduction though, let’s just jump to the films!
Rotting Hill
Director: James Cunningham
Ah, love in the time of zombies. Always a romantic and, er, gory tale of spellbound hearts and spending an eternity together with “the one.” Rotting Hill is a cute little love story, and yes I just said cute, about two undead lovers munching their way through the apocalypse. There’s some really cool effects on display and a few good kills, even though I’m not sure why zombies are killing other zombies (hate crime?), but hell, it’s a fun little romp none the less.

For their seventh annual edition, the Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival is really blowing things up!
Well, not literally. But the world’s premiere horror movie fest is expanding to over double its regular size, screening over 50 films on nine terrifying nights Oct. 10-18 at its new home, the prestigious AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland.
The scares kick off on the 10th with the return of local fave filmmaker Richard Bates, Jr. with the feature-length version of Excision about a teenage girl obsessed with becoming a surgeon. The film co-stars John Waters, Malcolm McDowell and Traci Lords. Bates’ original short Excision on which the feature is based screened at Spooky Movie back in 2008.
A few other Spooky Movie alumni who are back with highly anticipated new films include Mike Davis‘ “green” horror movie President Wolfman, which is composed entirely of public domain footage mixed with a rip-roarin...

Those crazy Brits behind the Bloody Cuts horror anthology are at it again! They've given us fair warning this time as we've just received an announcement that March 18 will see the release of their newest short film, Mother Died. Mother Died? Really? Is nothing sacred around here?
Around here ... I guess not. Bazinga!
Bloody Cuts is an anthology film series that will eventually be conglomerated into one movie, once filming of the 13 shorts is completed. For now, the Bloody Cuts team treats us by releasing the shorts one at a time.
These projects are always very impressive. Do yourself a favor and check out some of their past works if you've missed any of them. All the films are on the official Bloody Cuts website, you can "like" Bloody Cuts on Facebook, and follow Bloody Cuts on Twitter (@bloodycutsfilms).
About Mother Died
Normally, Mother’s Day involves cards, chocolates and flowers.

Undoubtedly, Nancy Thompson has been one of the horror genre’s most beloved heroines ever since she made her big screen debut back in the original A Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984. Played by Heather Langenkamp, Nancy was remarkable in many ways- she was one of the rare horror heroines that not only came back for several sequels, but fans also saw her character evolve from a teenager into a mother.
As someone who grew up admiring several women characters in the horror genre, Nancy has always been by far my favorite. Not only was she strong and intelligent, but she was always the perfect yin to Freddy Krueger’s (Robert Englund) yang and wasn’t just another faceless teenage victim.
Since Langenkamp is about unveil a brand new documentary called I Am Nancy that explores the relevance of heroes and heroines in the modern horror age, I thought it...

It’s a bit late but to finally end my Halloween champion Slasher report on who is the king out of Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger, I have watched the entire back catalogue of their films and given a run down on each characters franchise story and best kills.
Part 1 was on Jason, Part 2 was Michael Myers and finally Part 3 is on the killing Dream Demon Freddy Krueger.
Set on Elm Street, Freddy is the reason I struggled to sleep through the late 80’s due to being terrified of him visiting me in my dreams.
Beware pictures of blood, a lot of gushing blood and other violent deaths.
And so a little rhyme to begin this story:
One, two, Freddy’s coming for you.
Three, Four, Better Lock your door.
Five, Six, grab your Crucifix.
Seven, Eight, Gonna stay up late.
Nine, Ten, Never sleep again.
The brilliant...

Freddy’s at it again. There’s no surprise there as the real world doesn’t understand that he basically exists in both worlds, yet if you try to throw a punch at his face, you’re not likely going to hit him. And if you do, you might break his jaw or peel some burnt flesh off his cheek, but a minute later after unleashing a humorous quip, he’ll laugh it off and slice you for the trouble. That’s our beloved Freddy Krueger though. No matter how bad you think you are... he’s badder.

British producer Jonathan Sothcott get in touch to let us know that a cast has been nailed down for Dead Cert, the vampire film he previously discussed with us here. Set to roll for five weeks this fall in London and Essex, the movie will be directed by Steven Lawson from a script he wrote with Ben Shillito and Nick Onsloe.
The ensemble is headed by UK horror regular Craig Fairbrass, Doghouse’s Billy Murray, Steven Berkoff, Dog Soldiers and Mutant Chronicles’ Sean Pertwee, Philip Davis, Andy Tiernan, Lisa McAllister, Roland Manookian and Janet Montgomery, the latter of whom will be seen this fall in both The Hills Run Red and Wrong Turn 3: Left For Dead. “Janet is a bona fide scream queen,” Sothcott tells Fango. “Craig Fairbrass and I went with her to the Hills Run Red premiere last week, and she is bloody amazing. She totally steals the film,...
